On behalf of the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC), we present results from the cross-calibration campaigns in 2012 on 3C 273 and in 2013 on PKS 2155-304 between the then active X-ray observatories Chandra, NuSTAR, Suzaku, Swift and XMM-Newton. We compare measured fluxes between instrument pairs in two energy bands, 1-5 keV and 3-7 keV and calculate an average cross-normalization constant for each energy range. We review known cross-calibration features and provide a series of tables and figures to be used for evaluating cross-normalization constants obtained from other observations with the above mentioned observatories., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

The spatial distribution of the metals residing in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters records all the information on a cluster's nucleosynthesis and chemical enrichment history. We present measurements from a total of 1.2 Ms Suzaku XIS and 72 ks Chandra observations of the cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 3112 out its virial radius (~ 1470 kpc). We find that the ratio of the observed supernova type Ia explosions to the total supernova explosions has a uniform distribution at a level of 12-16% out to the cluster's virial radius. The observed fraction of type Ia supernova explosions is in agreement with the corresponding fraction found in our Galaxy and the chemical enrichment of our Galaxy. The non-varying supernova enrichment suggests that the ICM in cluster outskirts was enriched by metals at an early stage before the cluster itself was formed during the period of intense star formation activity. Additionally, we find that the 2D delayed detonation model CDDT produces significantly worse fits to the X-ray spectra compared to simple 1D W7 models. This is due to the relative overestimate of Si, and underestimate of Mg, in these models with respect to the measured abundances., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 10 pages, 4 figures, 8 tables

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. We desire a simple comparison of the absolute effective areas of the current generation of CCD instruments onboard the following observatories: Chandra ACIS-S3, XMM-Newton (EPIC-MOS and EPIC-pn), Suzaku XIS, and Swift XRT and a straightforward comparison of the time-dependent response of these instruments across their respective mission lifetimes. We have been using 1E 0102.2-7219, the brightest supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud, to evaluate and modify the response models of these instruments. 1E 0102.2-7219 has strong lines of O, Ne, and Mg below 1.5 keV and little or no Fe emission to complicate the spectrum. As part of the activities of the International Astronomical Consortium for High Energy Calibration (IACHEC), we have developed a standard spectral model for 1E 0102.2-7219. The model is empirical in that it includes Gaussians for the identified lines, an absorption component in the Galaxy, another absorption component in the SMC, and two thermal continuum components. In our fits, the model is highly constrained in that only the normalizations of the four brightest lines/line complexes (the O vii He$\alpha$ triplet, O viii Ly$\alpha$ line, the Ne ix He$\alpha$ triplet, and the Ne x Ly$\alpha$ line) and an overall normalization are allowed to vary. We have examined these measured line fluxes as a function of time for each instrument after applying the most recent calibrations that account for the time-dependent response of each instrument. We perform our effective area comparison with representative, early mission data when the radiation damage and contamination layers were at a minimum. We find that the measured fluxes of these lines generally agree to within +/-10% for all instruments, with 38 of our 48 fitted normalizations within +/-10% of the IACHEC model value., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

"Fossil" galaxy groups, each dominated by a relatively isolated giant elliptical galaxy, have many properties intermediate between groups and clusters of galaxies. We used the {\sl Suzaku} X-ray observatory to observe the X-ray brightest fossil group, ESO 3060170, out to $R_{200}$, in order to better elucidate the relation between fossil groups, normal groups, and clusters. We determined the intragroup gas temperature, density, and metal abundance distributions and derived the entropy, pressure and mass profiles for this group. The entropy and pressure profiles in the outer regions are flatter than in simulated clusters, similar to what is seen in observations of massive clusters. This may indicate that the gas is clumpy and/or the gas has been redistributed. Assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, the total mass is estimated to be $\sim1.7\times10^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$ within a radius $R_{200}$ of $\sim1.15$ Mpc, with an enclosed baryon mass fraction of 0.14. The integrated iron mass-to-light ratio of this fossil group is larger than in most groups and comparable to those of clusters, indicating that this fossil group has retained the bulk of its metals. A galaxy luminosity density map on a scale of 25 Mpc shows that this fossil group resides in a relatively isolated environment, unlike the filamentary structures in which typical groups and clusters are embedded., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

We present a study of the central engine in the broad-line radio galaxy 3C120 using a multi-epoch analysis of a deep XMM-Newton observation and two deep Suzaku pointings (in 2012). In order to place our spectral data into the context of the disk-disruption/jet-ejection cycles displayed by this object, we monitor the source in the UV/X-ray bands, and in the radio band. We find three statistically acceptable spectral models, a disk-reflection model, a jet-model and a jet+disk model. Despite being good descriptions of the data, the disk-reflection model violates the radio constraints on the inclination, and the jet-model has a fine-tuning problem, requiring a jet contribution exceeding that expected. Thus, we argue for a composite jet+disk model. Within the context of this model, we verify the basic predictions of the jet-cycle paradigm, finding a truncated/refilling disk during the Suzaku observations and a complete disk extending down to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) during the XMM-Newton observation. The idea of a refilling disk is further supported by the detection of the ejection of a new jet knot approximately one month after the Suzaku pointings. We also discover a step-like event in one of the Suzaku pointings in which the soft band lags the hard band. We suggest that we are witnessing the propagation of a disturbance from the disk into the jet on a timescale set by the magnetic field., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Gas accreting onto a galaxy will be of low metallicity while halo gas due to a galactic fountain will be of near-solar metallicity. We test these predictions by measuring the metal absorption line properties of halo gas 5 kpc above the plane of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, using observations taken with HST/STIS toward a bright background quasar. Metal absorption lines of Fe II, Mg II, and Mg I in the halo of NGC 891 are clearly seen, and when combined with recent deep H I observations, we are able to place constraints on the metallicity of the halo gas for the first time. The H I line width defines the line broadening, from which we model opacity effects in these metal lines, assuming the absorbing gas is continuously distributed in the halo. The gas-phase metallicities are [Fe/H] = -1.18 +/- 0.07 and [Mg/H] = -0.23 +0.36/-0.27 (statistical errors) and this difference is probably due to differential depletion onto grains. When corrected for such depletion using Galactic gas as a guide, both elements have approximately solar or even supersolar abundances. This suggests that the gas is from the galaxy disk, probably expelled into the halo by a galactic fountain, rather than from accretion of intergalactic gas, which would have a low metallicity. The abundances would be raised by significant amounts if the absorbing gas lies in a few clouds with thermal widths smaller than the rotational velocity of the halo. If this is the case, both the abundances and [Mg/Fe] would be supersolar., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

During a routine calibration observation of 1E0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) carried out in October 2012 for the Suzaku satellite, we detected a transient X-ray source at (RA, Dec) = (01h02m47s, -72d04m54s) in the equinox J2000.0 with a positional uncertainty of ~1"4. We conducted a temporal and spectral analysis of the source and found a coherent pulse signal with a period of 522.3 +/- 0.1 s, and a featureless spectrum described by a single power-law model with a photon index of 1.0 +/- 0.1 and a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 8.8 x 10^35 erg s^-1 at an assumed distance of 60 kpc. The Suzaku source is likely to be the counterpart of 2XMMJ010247.4-720449, which has been observed several times, including during outburst by Swift. Based on the X-ray characteristics in our data, as well as the transient record and optical and near-infrared features in the literature, we conclude that this source is a high-mass X-ray binary pulsar with a Be star companion in the SMC, which is known to harbor an exceptionally large (80) number of such sources in comparison to our Galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, 2013 PASJ accepted

The fraction of cluster galaxies that host luminous AGN is an important probe of AGN fueling processes, the cold ISM at the centers of galaxies, and how tightly black holes and galaxies co-evolve. We present a new measurement of the AGN fraction in a sample of 13 clusters of galaxies (M >= 10^{14} Msun) at 1= 10^{44} erg/s. This fraction is measured relative to all cluster galaxies more luminous than M*_{3.6}(z)+1, where M*_{3.6}(z) is the absolute magnitude of the break in the galaxy luminosity function at the cluster redshift in the IRAC 3.6um bandpass. The cluster AGN fraction is 30 times greater than the 3sigma upper limit on the value for AGN of similar luminosity at z~0.25, as well as more than an order of magnitude greater than the AGN fraction at z~0.75. AGN with L_{X,H} >= 10^{43} erg/s exhibit similarly pronounced evolution with redshift. In contrast with the local universe, where the luminous AGN fraction is higher in the field than in clusters, the X-ray and MIR-selected AGN fractions in the field and clusters are consistent at 1

The outskirts of galaxy clusters, near the virial radius, remain relatively unexplored territory and yet are vital to our understanding of cluster growth, structure, and mass. In this presentation, we show the first results from a program to constrain the state of the outer intracluster medium (ICM) in a large sample of galaxy clusters, exploiting the strengths of three complementary X-ray observatories: Suzaku (low, stable background), XMM-Newton (high sensitivity), and Chandra (good spatial resolution). By carefully combining observations from the cluster core to beyond r_200, we are able to identify and reduce systematic uncertainties that would impede our spatial and spectral analysis using a single telescope. Our sample comprises nine clusters at z ~ 0.1-0.2 fully covered in azimuth to beyond r_200, and our analysis indicates that the ICM is not in hydrostatic equilibrium in the cluster outskirts, where we see clear azimuthal variations in temperature and surface brightness. In one of the clusters, we are able to measure the diffuse X-ray emission well beyond r_200, and we find that the entropy profile and the gas fraction are consistent with expectations from theory and numerical simulations. These results stand in contrast to recent studies which point to gas clumping in the outskirts; the extent to which differences of cluster environment or instrumental effects factor in this difference remains unclear. From a broader perspective, this project will produce a sizeable fiducial data set for detailed comparison with high-resolution numerical simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We report the discovery of 12 new fossil groups of galaxies, systems dominated by a single giant elliptical galaxy and cluster-scale gravitational potential, but lacking the population of bright galaxies typically seen in galaxy clusters. These fossil groups (FGs), selected from the maxBCG optical cluster catalog, were detected in snapshot observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We detail the highly successful selection method, with an 80% success rate in identifying 12 FGs from our target sample of 15 candidates. For 11 of the systems, we determine the X-ray luminosity, temperature, and hydrostatic mass, which do not deviate significantly from expectations for normal systems, spanning a range typical of rich groups and poor clusters of galaxies. A small number of detected FGs are morphologically irregular, possibly due to past mergers, interaction of the intra-group medium (IGM) with a central AGN, or superposition of multiple massive halos. Two-thirds of the X-ray-detected FGs exhibit X-ray emission associated with the central BCG, although we are unable to distinguish between AGN and extended thermal galaxy emission using the current data. This sample, a large increase in the number of known FGs, will be invaluable for future planned observations to determine FG temperature, gas density, metal abundance, and mass distributions, and to compare to normal (non-fossil) systems. Finally, the presence of a population of galaxy-poor systems may bias mass function determinations that measure richness from galaxy counts. Defined as X-ray bright galaxy groups with large differences between the luminosities of their brightest and second brightest galaxies, "fossil groups" are believed to be some of the oldest galaxy systems in the universe. They have therefore been the subject of much recent research. In this work we present a study of 10 fossil group candidates with an average of 33 spectroscopically confirmed members per group, making this the deepest study of its type to-date. We also use this data to perform an analysis of the luminosity function of our sample of fossil groups. We confirm the high masses previously reported for many of fossil systems, finding values more similar to those of clusters than of groups. We also confirm the high dynamical mass-to-light ratios reported in many previous studies. While our results are consistent with previous studies in many ways, our interpretation is not. This is because we show that, while the luminosities of the BCGs in these systems are consistent with their high dynamical masses, their richnesses (total number of galaxies above some canonical value) are extremely low. This leads us to suggest a new interpretation of fossil systems in which the large differences between the luminosities of their brightest and second brightest galaxies are simply the result the high BCG luminosities and low richnesses, while the high masses and low richnesses also explain the high mass-to-light ratios. Our results therefore suggest that fossil systems can be characterised as cluster-like in their masses and BCG luminosities, but possessing the richnesses and optical luminosities of relatively poor groups. These findings are not predicted by any of the current models for the formation of fossil groups. Therefore, if this picture is confirmed, current ideas about the formation and evolution of fossil systems will need to be reformulated., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. We present Chandra snapshot observations of the first large X-ray sample of optically identified fossil groups. For 9 of 14 candidate groups, we are able to determine the X-ray luminosity and temperature, which span a range typical of large ellipticals to rich groups of galaxies. We discuss these initial results in the context of group IGM and central galaxy ISM evolution, and we also describe plans for a deep X-ray follow-up program., Comment: 1 page, 2 figures. Galaxy groups are key tracers of galaxy evolution, cluster evolution, and structure formation, yet they are difficult to study at even moderate redshift. We have undertaken a project to observe a flux-limited sample of intermediate-redshift (0.1 < z < 0.5) group candidates identified by the XBootes Chandra survey. When complete, this project will nearly triple the current number of groups with measured temperatures in this redshift range. Here we present deep Suzaku/XIS and Chandra/ACIS follow-up observations of the first 10 targets in this project; all are confirmed sources of diffuse, thermal emission with derived temperatures and luminosities indicative of rich groups/poor clusters. By exploiting the multi-wavelength coverage of the XBootes/NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey (NDWFS) field, we aim to (1) constrain non-gravitational effects that alter the energetics of the intragroup medium, and (2) understand the physical connection between the X-ray and optical properties of groups. We report Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795 that extend to r_200 ~ 2 Mpc, the radius within which the mean cluster mass density is 200 times the cosmic critical density. These observations are the first to probe the state of the intracluster medium in this object at r > 1.3 Mpc. We sample two disjoint sectors in the cluster outskirts (1.3 < r < 1.9 Mpc) and detect X-ray emission in only one of them to a limiting (3-sigma) soft X-ray surface brightness of B(0.5-2 keV) = 1.8 x 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 deg^-2, a level less than 20% of the cosmic X-ray background brightness. We trace the run of temperature with radius at r > 0.4 Mpc and find that it falls relatively rapidly (T ~ r^-0.9), reaching a value about one third of its peak at the largest radius we can measure it. Assuming the intracluster medium is in hydrostatic equilibrium and is polytropic, we find a polytropic index of 1.3 +0.3-0.2 and we estimate a mass of 4.1 +0.5-0.3 x 10^14 M_solar within 1.3 Mpc, somewhat (2.7-sigma) lower than that reported by previous observers. However, our observations provide evidence for departure from hydrostatic equilibrium at radii as small as r ~ 1.3 Mpc ~ r_500 in this apparently regular and symmetrical cluster., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present deep HI 21-cm and optical observations of the face-on spiral galaxy M 83 obtained as part of a project to search for high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in nearby galaxies. Anomalous-velocity neutral gas is detected toward M 83, with 5.6x10^7 Msolar of HI contained in a disk rotating 40-50 km/s more slowly in projection than the bulk of the gas. We interpret this as a vertically extended thick disk of neutral material, containing 5.5% of the total HI within the central 8 kpc. Using an automated source detection algorithm to search for small-scale HI emission features, we find eight distinct, anomalous-velocity HI clouds with masses ranging from 7x10^5 to 1.5x10^7 Msolar and velocities differing by up to 200 km/s compared to the HI disk. Large on-disk structures are coincident with the optical spiral arms, while unresolved off-disk clouds contain no diffuse optical emission down to a limit of 27 r' mag per square arcsec. The diversity of the thick HI disk and larger clouds suggests the influence of multiple formation mechanisms, with a galactic fountain responsible for the slowly-rotating disk and on-disk discrete clouds, and tidal effects responsible for off-disk cloud production. The mass and kinetic energy of the HI clouds are consistent with the mass exchange rate predicted by the galactic fountain model. If the HVC population in M 83 is similar to that in our own Galaxy, then the Galactic HVCs must be distributed within a radius of less than 25 kpc., Comment: 30 pages, 23 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ. The flight calibration of the spectral response of CCD instruments below 1.5 keV is difficult in general because of the lack of strong lines in the on-board calibration sources typically available. We have been using 1E 0102.2-7219, the brightest supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud, to evaluate the response models of the ACIS CCDs on the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), the EPIC CCDs on the XMM-Newton Observatory, the XIS CCDs on the Suzaku Observatory, and the XRT CCD on the Swift Observatory. E0102 has strong lines of O, Ne, and Mg below 1.5 keV and little or no Fe emission to complicate the spectrum. The spectrum of E0102 has been well characterized using high-resolution grating instruments, namely the XMM-Newton RGS and the CXO HETG, through which a consistent spectral model has been developed that can then be used to fit the lower-resolution CCD spectra. We have also used the measured intensities of the lines to investigate the consistency of the effective area models for the various instruments around the bright O (~570 eV and 654 eV) and Ne (~910 eV and 1022 eV) lines. We find that the measured fluxes of the O VII triplet, the O VIII Ly-alpha line, the Ne IX triplet, and the Ne X Ly-alpha line generally agree to within +/-10 % for all instruments, with 28 of our 32 fitted normalizations within +/-10% of the RGS-determined value. The maximum discrepancies, computed as the percentage difference between the lowest and highest normalization for any instrument pair, are 23% for the O VII triplet, 24% for the O VIII Ly-alpha line, 13% for the Ne IX triplet, and 19% for the Ne X Ly-alpha line. If only the CXO and XMM are compared, the maximum discrepancies are 22% for the O VII triplet, 16% for the O VIII Ly-alpha line, 4% for the Ne IX triplet, and 12% for the Ne X Ly-alpha line., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, to be published in Proceedings of the SPIE 7011: Space Telescopes and Instrumentation II: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray 2008

About half of the baryons in the local Universe are thought to reside in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 0.1-10 million K. Thermal soft excess emission in the spectrum of some cluster outskirts that contains OVII and/or OVIII emission lines is regarded as evidence of the WHIM, although the origin of the lines is controversial due to strong Galactic and solar system foreground emission. We observed the Coma-11 field, where the most prominent thermal soft excess has ever been reported, with Suzaku XIS in order to make clear the origin of the excess. We did not confirm OVII or OVIII excess emission. The OVII and OVIII intensity in Coma-11 is more than 5 sigma below that reported before and we obtained 2 sigma upper limits of 2.8 and 2.9 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for OVII and OVIII, respectively. The intensities are consistent with those in another field (Coma-7) that we measured, and with other measurements in the Coma outskirts (Coma-7 and X Com fields with XMM-Newton). We did not confirm the spatial variation within Coma outskirts. The strong oxygen emission lines previously reported are likely due to solar wind charge exchange., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. The Cygnus Loop was observed from the northeast to the southwest with XMM-Newton. We divided the observed region into two parts, the north path and the south path, and studied the X-ray spectra along two paths. The spectra can be well fitted either by a one-component non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model or by a two-component NEI model. The rim regions can be well fitted by a one-component model with relatively low \kTe whose metal abundances are sub-solar (0.1--0.2). The major part of the paths requires a two-component model. Due to projection effects, we concluded that the low kTe (about 0.2 keV) component surrounds the high kTe (about 0.6 keV) component, with the latter having relatively high metal abundances (about 5 times solar). Since the Cygnus Loop is thought to originate in a cavity explosion, the low-kTe component originates from the cavity wall while the high-kTe component originates from the ejecta. The flux of the cavity wall component shows a large variation along our path. We found it to be very thin in the south-west region, suggesting a blowout along our line of sight. The metal distribution inside the ejecta shows non-uniformity, depending on the element. O, Ne and Mg are relatively more abundant in the outer region while Si, S and Fe are concentrated in the inner region, with all metals showing strong asymmetry. This observational evidence implies an asymmetric explosion of the progenitor star. We present observations of the North Polar Spur (NPS) using the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) aboard the Suzaku X-ray satellite. The NPS is a large region of enhanced soft X-ray and radio emission projected above the plane of the Galaxy, likely produced by a series of supernovae and stellar winds from the nearby Sco-Cen OB association. The exceptional sensitivity and spectral resolution of the XIS below 1 keV allow unprecedented probing of low-energy spectral lines, including CVI (0.37 keV) and NVII (0.50 keV), and we have detected highly-ionized nitrogen toward the NPS for the first time. For this single pointing toward the brightest 3/4 keV emission (l = 26.8 deg, b = +22.0 deg), the best-fit NPS emission model implies a hot (kT ~ 0.3 keV), collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) plasma with depleted C, O, Ne, Mg, and Fe abundances of less than 0.5 solar, but an enhanced N abundance, with N/O = 4.0 +0.4,-0.5 times solar. The temperature and total thermal energy of the gas suggest heating by one or more supernovae, while the enhanced nitrogen abundance is best explained by enrichment from stellar material that has been processed by the CNO cycle. Due to the time required to develop AGB stars, we conclude that this N/O enhancement cannot be caused by the Sco-Cen OB association, but may result from a previous enrichment episode in the solar neighborhood., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (2nd Suzaku Special Issue)

Some early-type galaxies show OVI emission, a tracer of gas at 10^5.5 K, and a predicted product of gas cooling from the X-ray emitting temperatures. We studied the spatial extent and velocity structure of this cooling gas by obtaining spectra of the OVI doublet in NGC 4636 and NGC 5846 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. For NGC 4636, the central LWRS pointing shows that the OVI lines are double-peaked and symmetrical about the systemic velocity of the galaxy, with a separation of 210 km/s. A LWRS observation 30" from the center failed to show additional OVI emission. For NGC 5846, three spectra were obtained with 4" x 20" apertures (MDRS) at the center and 4" to the east and west of the center. The OVI line flux seen in the previous LWRS is contained in the sum of the smaller apertures, with most of the flux in a single non-central MDRS aperture, suggesting a size for the emission < 0.5 kpc; the emission consists of a blue and red peak. For both galaxies, the OVI velocity structure is similar to that of the optical [NII] emission and is consistent with rotation. The compactness and velocity structure of the OVI emission rules out cooling flow models with broadly distributed mass drop-out but is consistent with cooling flow models where the cooling occurs primarily in the central region. A prediction of the galaxy cluster cooling flow model is that as gas cools from the ambient cluster temperature, emission lines are produced in gas at subsequently decreasing temperatures. Gas passing through 10^5.5 K emits in the lines of OVI 1032,1035, and here we report a FUSE study of these lines in three cooling flow clusters, Abell 426, Abell 1795, and AWM 7. No emission was detected from AWM 7, but OVI is detected from the centers of Abell 426 and Abell 1795, and possibly to the south of the center in Abell 1795, where X-ray and optical emission line filaments lie. In Abell 426, these line luminosities imply a cooling rate of 32+/-6 Msolar/yr within the central r = 6.2 kpc region, while for Abell 1795, the central cooling rate is 26+/-7 Msolar/yr (within r = 22 kpc), and about 42+/-9 Msolar/yr including the southern pointing. Including other studies, three of six clusters have OVI emission, and they also have star formation as well as emission lines from 1E4 K gas. Early-type galaxies often contain a hot X-ray emitting interstellar medium (3-8E6 K) with an apparent radiative cooling time much less than a Hubble time. If unopposed by a heating mechanism, the gas will radiatively cool to temperatures <= 10E4 K at a rate proportional to L_X/T_X, typically 0.03-1 M_solar yr^-1. We can test if gas is cooling through the 3E5 K range by observing the OVI doublet, whose luminosity is proportional to the cooling rate. Here we report on a study of an unbiased sample of 24 galaxies, obtaining Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra to complement the X-ray data of ROSAT} and Chandra. The OVI line emission was detected in about 40% of the galaxies and at a luminosity level similar to the prediction from the cooling flow model. There is a correlation between Mdot_OVI and Mdot_X, although there is significant dispersion about the relationship, where the OVI is brighter or dimmer than expected by a factor of three or more. If the cooling flow picture is to be retained, this dispersion requires that cooling flows be time-dependent, as might occur by the activity of an AGN. However, of detected objects, those with the highest or lowest values of Mdot_OVI/Mdot_X are not systematically hot or cool, as one might predict from AGN heating., Comment: 49 pages, 26 figures, ApJ, in press
