Prior research reports that a manager's equity risk‐taking incentive (vega) is positively associated with financial misreporting. FAS 123R led to a significant decrease in vega while SOX increased the cost of financial misreporting. Consistent with the original intent of the legislation, we find that SOX contributed to significant decreases in both fraud restatements and AAERs. Importantly, our results suggest that the SOX‐induced decreases in fraud restatements and AAERs have endured to more recent years. On the other hand, while we find evidence that equity‐incentive‐motivated financial misreporting ceased to exist in the immediate years after FAS 123R, we also find that this was only temporary. The purpose of this study is to compare financial performance of the Islamic banks in the COVID-19 Era. The performance evaluation was conducted on seven Islamic countries between 2017 and 2021. Entropy Method was utilized to choose the best performance evaluation criteria affecting the Islamic banks’ performance and Waspas Method was used to determine the best performing Islamic country. The results indicate that ‘liquid assets to short-term liabilities’ is the best performance criteria for Islamic banks during the ‘whole period’, ‘no pandemic period’ and ‘pandemic period’. Additionally, while the Islamic country with the best performance was Bangladesh during ‘no pandemic period’, Turkey was the leading Islamic country for both ‘whole period’ and ‘pandemic period’.

Risk management is a complex process that requires company managers to have very good knowledge of its organizational structure on the one hand and on the other hand, in order to achieve a good management, it is necessary for the respective manager to have sufficient long-term experience during which the manager has monitored the processes of company management and its susceptibility and change under the influence of various factors. The overall risk management process goes through three main stages: identification of risks, analysis and assessment of risks and risk monitoring. Each stage is a compilation of complex procedures through which the problems and risks for the respective enterprise are determined and overcome. For this reason, the strictness, importance and significance of each stage cannot be accurately determined. Due to the limited scope of the article, the research is focused only on one of the main problems in risk management, namely the study of the standard deviation of the risk in the process of assessing and analyzing the risks in tourism sector enterprises. The article has the following structure: Introduction, References review, Methodology, Results and Discussion. Two hypotheses are presented for testing and research. Proving these two hypotheses through the application of the mathematical toolkit for risk assessment gives the innovativeness of the article and its authorial identity, which distinguishes it from other publications in the field of tourism sector. The obtained results of this article can serve the managers of tourism companies to improve their work in the management of hotels. The process of identifying, testing, evaluating and analyzing risks is complex, requiring managers to have sound knowledge of finance, accounting, economics and management. This article can provide them with guidance for solving specific problems and making managerial decisions about risk management.

International financial reporting standards (IFRS) have become a worldwide common accounting language which most countries have adopted. However, there are no studies obtained based on transition economies in a particular geographic zone. Thus, this study is carried out to observe the influence of IFRS adoptation on the economic growth of 11 CIS countries from 2005 to 2018. To examine the actual effect of the variables, the regression model was divided into two sub-models based on the category of variables. There is a difference between the economic growth in adopted and non-adopted states. The adoption of IFRS showed negative and insignificant relation to GDP per capita. The number of observations after fully adopting IFRS was low, the data on IFRS adoption was challenging, and an advanced econometric model should be selected. The study compared CIS results with Eastern European countries to see a clear pattern and generate an efficient suggestion for policy implementation. The policy implementations related to Uzbeki-stan were also provided.

The main purpose of the article was to identify the level of concentration on the market of audit services provided to public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The additional aim of the article was to identify the level of rotation among companies providing audit services to public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Using monthly data from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's ‘Hudongyi’ platform and comment letters from December 2014 to December 2018, this study investigates the influence of interactive information disclosure on non-penalty regulatory review risk. The findings reveal that the richness and activeness of interactive information disclosure are positively associated with regulatory review risk. Moreover, the non-penalty regulatory review is effective as it significantly reduces the probability of receiving a comment letter in the subsequent three periods. The timeliness of interactive information disclosure is negatively associated with regulatory review risks. Additionally, we find that newspaper media coverage partially mediates the relationship between interactive information disclosure and regulatory review risk. For companies with low levels of internal governance, in low-competitive industries, and state-owned companies, the positive relationship between the number of investor questions and regulatory review risk is strengthened. These findings enrich the literature on the determinants of regulatory review risk and the economic consequences of interactive information disclosure in emerging markets.

This article explores the relationship between economic freedom and the fiscal conditions of cities in Tennessee. The study finds a positive correlation between municipal fiscal health and aspects of an economic freedom index. The study focuses solely on cities within Tennessee to minimize multistate government influences on economic freedom. The research utilizes audited financial statements and the change in net position as a fiscal health metric. The study concludes that policies favoring free enterprise and a lower cost of government are associated with more favorable fiscal conditions in Tennessee cities. [Extracted from the article]

We use the year-end adjustments to the provisions for student loan losses of state and provincial governments in the United States and Canada to study government accounting conservatism and how it varies between these adjacent and highly integrated countries. Building on Canada's more conservative cultural attributes, we hypothesize and find that Canadian provincial governments report more conservative provisions for student loan losses than U.S. state governments. Moreover, the year-end adjustments to the provisions in Canada are excessively conservative; they are larger than the audit materiality threshold. We further find that the political ideology of the government, government reporting incentives, government debt, and political competition are important determinants of government accounting conservatism. Finally, we find a negative association between the year-end adjustment to the provision and future student lending. This result suggests that government accounting conservatism leads to credit rationing and significant societal consequences for students. Overall, our study highlights important aspects of the determinants and consequences of government accounting conservatism. Prior research on SEC comment letters has almost exclusively focused on reviews of periodic filings, such as 10-Ks. Transactional filing reviews, such as those related to mergers and acquisitions (M&A), are a priority of the SEC to which it dedicates significant resources. We help fill the void in the literature by examining the influence of SEC comment letters on one type of transactional filing, Form S-4, on the accounting quality of a newly merged entity. We find that S-4s that receive an SEC comment letter are less likely to have a restatement or a goodwill impairment after a merger or acquisition is completed. Our inferences remain the same using either an entropy-balanced sample or a propensity-score-matched sample based on firm and deal characteristics. These results are stronger for S-4 comment letters with higher intensity and M&A-specific comments. Finally, to explore plausible mechanisms and provide context, we examine specific disclosure changes in S-4 amendments filed during the filing review process and find evidence that the improved M&A accounting quality is related to revisions to the pro forma financial statements, the total purchase price, and goodwill allocations. This paper examines how analysts incorporate other comprehensive income (OCI) and its components into their earnings forecasts. We first document that analysts' 1-year-ahead earnings forecasts are associated with OCI and OCI components having predictive ability; this suggests analysts (at least partially) incorporate this information into their forecasting. We then show that analysts are neither complete nor timely in incorporating OCI information into their forecasts, as several OCI components remain associated with analysts' forecast errors. Further, we document that higher uncertainty in firm performance exacerbates analysts' underreaction, evidencing a friction to full incorporation of OCI-related information. Finally, as evidence of where and when analysts derive OCI-related information, we document that analysts' forecast revisions correlate with the release of firms' 10-Ks and early 10-Qs (i.e., quarters one and two but not three). We examine real outcomes for biotech startups going public around the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act. Reduced compliance costs associate with greater innovation capital formation as biotech IPO volume and proceeds increase after the JOBS Act. Biotechs, which conduct over 30% of IPOs since 2012, go public with products earlier in the FDA approval process and more frequently target rare diseases and cancer. Consistent with our survey evidence that managers use compliance savings to invest in R&D, we link the JOBS Act to post-IPO increases in project-level development, such as new patents, clinical trials, and staffing of laboratories. Post-JOBS Act product candidates are more likely to reach key milestones in the FDA approval process and these startups fail at lower rates. Benefits accrue to shareholders without sacrificing financial reporting quality. Our results demonstrate how tailoring regulations for startups can provide economic and societal benefits. The paper aims to assess the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) 16 “Leases” impact on the lessees’ financial situation. The study was conducted on the financial data for 2018–2019 of 494 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange using the difference-in-differences (DID) method. The hand-collected data on lease usage retrieved from the financial statements and the data for financial ratios obtained from the Orbis database were used. The research sample includes 308 preparers under IFRS and 186 entities applying accounting policies under the Polish Accounting Act. It is shown that the IFRS 16 implementation resulted in a significant increase in the debt-to-equity and debt-to-total assets ratios of lessees and a decrease in the profitability. We identified significant leverage increase in the trade and services sectors. The results confirm the conclusions of previous studies based on estimates, whose authors expected a significant differential effect of IFRS 16 implementation between industries.
