Abstract

Spatial dynamics have long been recognized as an important driver of biodiversity. However, our understanding of species’ coexistence under realistic landscape configurations has been limited by lack of adequate analytical tools. To fill this gap, we develop a spatially explicit metacommunity model of multiple competing species and derive analytical criteria for their coexistence in fragmented heterogeneous landscapes. Specifically, we propose measures of niche and fitness differences for metacommunities, which clarify how spatial dynamics and habitat configuration interact with local competition to determine coexistence of species. We parameterize our model with a Bayesian approach using a 36-y time-series dataset of three Daphnia species in a rockpool metacommunity covering >500 patches. Our results illustrate the emergence of interspecific variation in extinction and recolonization processes, including their dependencies on habitat size and environmental temperature. We find that such interspecific variation contributes to the coexistence of Daphnia species by reducing fitness differences and increasing niche differences. Additionally, our parameterized model allows separating the effects of habitat destruction and temperature change on species extinction. By integrating coexistence theory and metacommunity theory, our study provides platforms to increase our understanding of species’ coexistence in fragmented heterogeneous landscapes and the response of biodiversity to environmental changes.

Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Therefore, accurate early diagnosis is critical in cancer management. Biopsies are generally the gold standard for definitive diagnoses, but are invasive and painful. With the advances in molecular biology and genomics techniques, liquid biopsy has been developed to provide the opportunity for a new generation of diagnostic approaches. In contrast with biopsy-based diagnosis, liquid biopsy is non-invasive on those cancer-derived materials circulating in body fluids. Since the advancement of non-invasive biomarkers, there is an urgent need for non-invasive biomarkers suitable for the early diagnosis of cancer. To date, most of the known biomarkers are specific to a single cancer type or subtype. However, those circulating materials may contain DNA contents from different tissues or organs. Thus, it is more straightforward to identify biomarkers that can be applied to multiple cancer types. This study aimed to integrate large-scale cancer genomics data at a pan-cancer level to identify cancer-related genes for non-invasive biomarkers in extracellular vesicles and cell-free DNA.

Abstract

Occupying 7% of the World's forest area, plantation forests have been increasing globally for the past 30 years and serve as a natural climate solution. However, whether plantation forests share the same fate as natural forests under the changing climate remains an open question. By establishing a framework in which climate directly and indirectly triggers or exacerbates fire and pests to affect forest vitality, we compared the vitality and resilience of 705 large plantation patches and 187 large natural forest patches over the past 20 years in China. Overall, large patches of plantation forests showed consistent sustainability with natural forests across China and were mainly distributed in humid areas with the fewest and weakest droughts. Forty percent of the vitality decline of natural forests was explained by droughts, pests, and fires driven by climate, while 70% of the vitality decline of plantation forests was affected by a combination of these disturbances through different pathways. As the site environments became drier, an increasing number of plantation forests showed lower vitality relative to natural forests. Frequent and serious droughts not only magnified the direct impact of drought on plantation forests, possibly due to homogeneous forest structure regarding ages and species, but also exacerbated forest fires and caused lower vitality of 85% of plantation forests relative to natural forests in southwest China. Abstract

Understanding the formation of feeding links provides insights into processes underlying food webs. Generally, predators feed on prey within a certain body‐size range, but a systematic quantification of such feeding niches is lacking. We developed a size‐constrained feeding‐niche (SCFN) model and parameterized it with information on both realized and non‐realized feeding links in 72 aquatic and 65 terrestrial food webs. Our analyses revealed profound differences in feeding niches between aquatic and terrestrial predators and variation along a temperature gradient. Specifically, the predator–prey body‐size ratio and the range in prey sizes increase with the size of aquatic predators, whereas they are nearly constant across gradients in terrestrial predator size. Overall, our SCFN model well reproduces the feeding relationships and predation architecture across 137 natural food webs (including 3878 species and 136,839 realized links). Our results illuminate the organisation of natural food webs and enables novel trait‐based and environment‐explicit modelling approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The advanced coupled conversion technique based on the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of alcohols and the reduction of CO2 is a potential strategy to solve the current energy and environmental crisis, and is of great significance for the upgrading conversion of CO2 to fuels. This work discloses that the Al3+ species-doped decatungstates (Al-DTs) can efficiently catalyze the coupled conversion of various aliphatic and aromatic primary/secondary alcohols with CO2 in MeCN under visible light illumination and very mild conditions, and the reductive efficiency of CO2 depends on the doping levels of Al3+ species in Al-DTs and the ODH reactivity of alcohols. After continuously illuminating for 12 h, the best, 4% Al-DT can provide 437 μmol acetophenone as the ODH product and 218 μmol CO2 reduction products (formic acid and methanol) with 1.82 h−1 turnover frequency in the photocatalytic coupled conversion of α-phenylethanol with CO2. Also, a trace amount of CO is detected from the photocatalytic coupled reactions. UV-vis spectra and isotope tracing tests using heavy oxygen water (H218O) support that the doubly-reduced blue H2DT species generated from the photocatalytic ODH of alcohols turns into its oxygen-deficient form ([DT2−]v) via an intra-molecular dehydration or lattice oxygen transfer and the latter, with the help of doped Al3+ species, may efficiently reduce CO2 to fuels via the multi-step proton-coupled electron transfer (PET) pathway. Abstract

With the current global energy crisis, the renewable energy shows a great development potential, in which the wind power generation is one of the most sophisticated means of power generation in technology. How-ever, for the doublyfed-induction-generator-based (DFIG-based) wind generation system, the grid voltage harmonics will result in the severe power oscillation, electromagnetic torque ripple and the grid current distortion since the stator is connected to the grid directly. In this paper, a novel control algorithm, which mainly includes two parts: one is the advanced phase-locked loop (APLL) and the other is the harmonics voltage compensation algorithm (HVCA), is proposed to eliminate the harmful effect caused by the grid voltage harmonic. The APLL part is applied to extract the amplitude and phase of each harmonic in the power grid, then the extracted amplitude and phase are fed to the HVCA part to control the LCL-type inverter to generate the harmonic compensation voltage, which shows the same amplitude but the opposite phase with the grid voltage harmonics. Finally, the harmonic compensation voltage is fed into the grid voltage through the series transformer which is cascaded between stator and grid. The simulation results are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Abstract

The moving average filter (MAF) is widely utilized to improve the disturbance rejection capability of the phase-locked loops (PLLs), which is of vital significance for the grid-integration and stable operation of power electronic converters to the electric power systems. However, the open-loop bandwidth is drastically reduced after incorporating MAF into the PLL structure, which makes the dynamic response sluggish. To overcome this shortcoming, some new techniques were proposed recently to improve the transient response of MAF-based PLLs. In this paper, a comprehensive performance comparison among the advanced MAF-based PLL algorithms is presented, which includes HPLL, MPLC-PLL, QT1-PLL, and DMAF-PLL. Various grid voltage disturbance scenarios, such as grid voltage sag, voltage flicker, and harmonics distortion, phase-angle and frequency jumps, DC offsets and noise, are considered to experimentally test the dynamic performances of these PLL algorithms. Finally, an improved positive sequence extraction method for HPLL under frequency jumps scenario is presented to compensate the steady-state error caused by the non-frequency adaptive DSC, and a satisfactory performance has been achieved.

Abstract

The orthogonal signal generator based phase-locked loops (OSG-PLLs) are among the most popular single-phase PLLs within the areas of power electronics and power systems, mainly because they are often easy to be implement and offer a robust performance against the grid disturbances. The main aim of this paper is to present a survey of the comparative performance evaluation among the state-of-the-art OSG-PLLs (include Delay-PLL, Deri-PLL, Park-PLL, SOGI-PLL, DOEC-PLL, VTD-PLL, CCF-PLL, and TPFA-PLL) under different grid disturbances such as voltage sags, phase and frequency jumps, and in the presence of dc offset, harmonic components, and white noise in their input. This analysis provides a useful insight about the advantages and disadvantages of these PLLs. The performance enhancement of Delay-PLL, Deri-PLL, and CCF-PLL by including a moving average (MAF) filter into their structure is another goal of this paper.

Abstract

Several advanced phase-lock-loop (PLL) algorithms have been proposed for single-phase power electronic systems. Among these algorithms, the orthogonal signal generators (OSGs) are widely utilized to generate a set of in-quadrature signals, owing to its benefit of simple digital implementation and low computational burden. Meanwhile, some other techniques have been proposed to enhance system robustness and stability characteristics. In this paper, a comprehensive comparison among the OSG-based PLLs and the advanced single-phase PLLs is presented when the grid voltage undergoes disturbances, and the performance comparison of transient response and disturbance rejection capabilities are presented. Finally, the moving average filter (MAF) is applied to enhance steady state and dynamic response of the delayed-type PLL, derivator-based PLL and the complex-coefficient filter (CCF-PLL) under grid frequency variations, harmonics and white noise contamination scenarios.
