Abstract Climate assessments have largely overlooked the radiative effect of anthropogenic coarse particulate matter (PMcoarse, with an aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 µm) in China. Despite its similar mass concentration to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), anthropogenic sources of PMcoarse in China have been much less studied and typically underrepresented in models. Here, we present a new model simulation for PMcoarse in China that incorporates various anthropogenic sources. The model successfully captures the magnitude and distribution of observed PMcoarse and recently available aerosol optical depth measurements at near-infrared wavelengths, which are substantially underestimated if anthropogenic PMcoarse is not included. We find that anthropogenic PMcoarse exerts a cooling effect of -0.11 Wm−2 (-0.03 to -0.42 Wm−2) in China by aerosol–radiation interaction, capable of completely offsetting the warming effect from black carbon by 2060 under Dynamic Projection model for Emissions in China (DPEC) 1.1 scenario. We conclude that the radiative effect due to anthropogenic PMcoarse will likely dampen the warming penalty caused by the emission reduction of other aerosols in China and should be incorporated into climate models.

Study region: The China-Vietnam Beilun River Study focus: Reconstruction of the historical river course of the Beilun River along the China–Vietnam border using multi-source data and application of the DSAS model to describe the changes and characteristics of different river segments; Quantification of land cover changes and characteristics along the Beilun River coastline using land dynamics and land transfer matrices; Analysis of the impact of river shoreline changes on land cover changes on both banks by overlaying shoreline change maps with land cover change maps. New hydrological insights for the region: Both banks of the boundary river tend to shift towards the opposite side, but the overall trend is a shift towards the Chinese side. The Chinese bank is characterized by erosion, while the Vietnamese bank is dominated by accretion. The Beilun River floodplain comprises more than 70 % cultivated land and forest land. Analysis of dynamic degree and transfer matrices shows a contraction of cultivated land, forest land, and water bodies, with a significant increase in construction land and other types of land, reflecting a conversion between cultivated and forest land and the encroachment of construction land on cultivated land. The migration of the boundary river shoreline has significantly impacted land cover. To address transboundary resource management issues, it is recommended that China and Vietnam sign a treaty with international legal validity.

Abstract Here, a combination of dopamine self‐polymerization and epoxy modified SiO2 (M‐SiO2) grafting was proposed, with the purpose of increasing interfacial adhesion of UHMWPE fiber. Inspired by mussel adhesion, polydopamine (PDA) was deposited onto the surface of UHMWPE fiber to form a thin layer with amino and hydroxyl groups. M‐SiO2 nanoparticles were then adhered to fiber surface via chemical reactions by a “two‐step” or “one‐step” technology. In the “two‐step” technique, the M‐SiO2 nanoparticles were adhered to the surface of PDA modified UHMWPE fiber via reactions between epoxy and amino groups. In the “one‐step” method, M‐SiO2 and dopamine were added into the UHMWPE/Tris solution at the same time. Surface morphology and thermal properties of various UHMWPE fibers were tested by SEM and TGA, respectively. Surface wettability of different UHMWPE fibers were evaluated by dynamic contact angle. The results proved that PDA and M‐SiO2 were successfully adhered to the surface of UHMWPE fibers. The mechanical property of modified UHMWPE/Epoxy composites was investigated, and 43.7 % improvement was obtained, compared with unmodified UHMWPE/Epoxy composite. Additionally, micro‐bond test revealed that the interfacial property (IFSS value) of modified UHMWPE fiber via the “one‐step” method was 6.08 MPa, significantly higher than that of unmodified UHMWPE fiber (2.47 MPa).

A Kovar alloy composite wire inlaid with copper core was developed through hot isostatic pressing sintering and subsequent multi-pass drawing. The interface between the Kovar alloy and copper was revealed, and the physical properties of the composite wire were investigated. The results show that the Kovar alloy and copper diffuse mutually during the forming process, producing a stable metallurgical bond. When the diameter of the wire is 2.8 mm, a diffusion layer of about 16.5 μm was found at the interface. The concentration of the diffused element had a gradient distribution from the interface to both sides. Combining the excellent properties of Kovar alloy and copper, the composite wire has comprehensive physical properties. The electrical and thermal conductivities are 9.38 × 106 S·m−1 and 72.2 W·m−1·K−1, respectively. The composite wire has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and the average coefficient of thermal expansion is lower than 6.36 × 10−6 ℃−1 in the temperature range of 25–450°C.

ABSTRACTThe role of microbiota-gut-brain axis in modulating longevity remains undetermined. Here, we performed a multiomics analysis of gut metagenomics, gut metabolomics, and brain functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in a cohort of 164 participants, including 83 nonagenarians (NAs) and 81 non-nonagenarians (NNAs) matched with their spouses and offspring. We found that 438 metabolites were significantly different between the two groups; among them, neuroactive compounds and anti-inflammatory substances were enriched in NAs. In addition, increased levels of neuroactive metabolites in NAs were significantly associated with NA-enriched species that had three corresponding biosynthetic potentials: Enterocloster asparagiformis, Hungatella hathewayi and Oxalobacter formigenes. Further analysis showed that the altered gut microbes and metabolites were linked to the enhanced brain connectivity in NAs, including the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)-left premotor cortex (PMC), left DLPFC-right primary motor area (M1), and right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG)-right M1. Finally, we found that neuroactive metabolites, altered microbe and enhanced brain connectivity contributed to the cognitive preservation in NAs. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in a long-lived population and insights into the establishment of a microbiome and metabolite homeostasis that can benefit human longevity and cognition by enhancing functional brain connectivity.

Helicobacter pylori causes globally prevalent infections that are highly related to chronic gastritis and even development of gastric carcinomas. With the increase of antibiotic resistance, scientists have begun to search for better vaccine design strategies to eradicate H. pylori colonization. However, while current strategies prefer to formulate vaccines with a single H. pylori antigen, their potential has not yet been fully realized. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are a potential platform since they could deliver multiple antigens. In this study, we engineered three crucial H. pylori antigen proteins (UreB, CagA, and VacA) onto the surface of OMVs derived from Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) mutant strains using the hemoglobin protease (Hbp) autotransporter system. In various knockout strategies, we found that OMVs isolated from the ΔrfbP ΔfliC ΔfljB ΔompA mutants could cause distinct increases in immunoglobulin G (IgG) and A (IgA) levels and effectively trigger T helper 1- and 17-biased cellular immune responses, which perform a vital role in protecting against H. pylori. Next, OMVs derived from ΔrfbP ΔfliC ΔfljB ΔompA mutants were used as a vector to deliver different combinations of H. pylori antigens. The antibody and cytokine levels and challenge experiments in mice model indicated that co-delivering UreB and CagA could protect against H. pylori and antigen-specific T cell responses. In summary, OMVs derived from the S. Typhimurium ΔrfbP ΔfliC ΔfljB ΔompA mutant strain as the vector while importing H. pylori UreB and CagA as antigenic proteins using the Hbp autotransporter system would greatly benefit controlling H. pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacterium that colonizes the human stomach, leading to various gastric diseases. The efficacy of traditional treatments, such as bismuth-based triple and quadruple therapies, has been reduced due to increasing antibiotic resistance and drug toxicity. As a result, the development of effective vaccines was proposed to control H. pylori-induced infections; however, one of the primary challenges is the lack of potent adjuvants. Although various adjuvants, both toxic (e.g. cholera toxin and Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin) and non-toxic (e.g. aluminum and propolis), have been tested for vaccine development, no clinically favorable adjuvants have been identified due to high toxicity, weak immunostimulatory effects, inability to elicit specific immune responses, or latent side effects. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), mainly secreted by gram-negative bacteria, have emerged as promising candidates for H. pylori vaccine adjuvants due to their potential applications. OMVs enhance mucosal immunity and Th1 and Th17 cell responses, which have been recognized to have protective effects and guarantee safety and efficacy. The development of an effective vaccine against H. pylori infection is ongoing, with clinical trials expected in the future.

Abstract Purpose Liver was one of the most common distant metastatic sites in breast cancer. Patients with distant metastasis were identified as American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage IV indicating poor prognosis. However, few studies have predicted the survival in females with T1-2N0-1 breast cancer who developed liver metastasis. This study aimed to explore the clinical features of these patients and establish a nomogram to predict their overall survival. Results 1923 patients were randomly divided into training (n = 1154) and validation (n = 769) cohorts. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that age, marital status, race, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), chemotherapy, surgery and bone metastasis, brain metastasis were considered the independent prognostic indicators. We developed a nomogram according to these ten parameters. The consistency index (c-index) was 0.72 (95% confidence interval CI 0.70–0.74) in the training cohort, 0.72 (95% CI 0.69–0.74) in the validation cohort. Calibration plots indicated that the nomogram-predicted survival was consistent with the recorded 1-, 3- and 5-year prognoses. Decision curve analysis curves in both the training and validation cohorts demonstrated that the nomogram showed better prediction than the AJCC TNM (8th) staging system. Abstract Objective Existing evidence suggests telomerase activation is a crucial step in tumorigenesis. The telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), encoded by the human TERT gene, is critical for telomerase expression. The TERT rs10069690 (C > T) variant was identified to be associated with the risk of cancer, however, there have been inconsistent results. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive meta-analysis aiming to clarify the association between this variant and cancer susceptibility. Methods We conducted literature search in PubMed, EMbase, MEDLINE and Cochrane Library up to April 30, 2024. Overall, there are 55 studies involving 334,196 patients with cancer and 741,187 controls included in the present study. All statistical analyses were performed by STATA software (version 11.0). Abstract Severe PM2.5 pollution threatens public health in India. Atmospheric stagnation traps emitted pollutants, worsening their health impacts. Global warming is anticipated to alter future stagnation patterns, impacting the effectiveness of air quality policies. Here, we develop a region-specific index that characterizes meteorological conditions driving stagnation and associated PM2.5 increases. Applying this index to an ensemble of climate models and global warming scenarios, we find that future stagnation changes result from both global CO2-driven circulation changes and local aerosol-driven meteorological responses. By 2100, we project an increase in winter stagnation in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) of 7 ± 3 days that leads to an increase in PM2.5 of ~7 ug/m3 in a high-warming and high-aerosol scenario. However, annual stagnation occurrences decrease across most of India. Thus, stringent air quality regulations in the IGP during winters will be critical to reduce surface PM2.5 concentrations as climate warms. Such regulations will directly improve air quality while reducing future stagnation occurrences, providing additional air quality benefits.

In recent years, the service life of building materials has become the focus of attention. Among them, the service life of concrete and steel bars is particularly affected by the corrosion of external ions (such as Cl−) in the environment. To solve this problem, a new type of composite nanocolloid was prepared through a controllable preparation method. The composite nanocolloid is prepared from aluminum chloride sol and silica sol as raw materials. The prepared colloidal particles have a particle size distribution between 10.5 and 17.5 nm, exhibiting excellent stability and dispersibility. In order to verify the improvement effect of the composite nanocolloid on the properties of building materials, the influence of it on the porosity of concrete and the anti-corrosion performance of steel bars was experimentally studied. The results indicate that the moisture absorption and dehumidification speed of concrete treated with composite nano colloids is slower, and the pore size distribution is mainly concentrated in 100–1,000 nm, indicating that the colloids can effectively optimize the pore structure of concrete. In addition, the processed steel plate samples showed high AC impedance values and low corrosion current logarithmic values in electrochemical testing, indicating that composite nanocolloids have a significant protective effect on the corrosion of steel bars, which can effectively improve the performance of building materials and extend their service life.

Abstract Background Objective and quantifiable markers are crucial for developing novel therapeutics for mental disorders by 1) stratifying clinically similar patients with different underlying neurobiological deficits and 2) objectively tracking disease trajectory and treatment response. Schizophrenia is often confounded with other psychiatric disorders, especially bipolar disorder, if based on cross-sectional symptoms. Awake and sleep EEG have shown promise in identifying neurophysiological differences as biomarkers for schizophrenia. However, most previous studies, while useful, were conducted in European and American populations, had small sample sizes, and utilized varying analytic methods, limiting comprehensive analyses or generalizability to diverse human populations. Furthermore, the extent to which wake and sleep neurophysiology metrics correlate with each other and with symptom severity or cognitive impairment remains unresolved. Moreover, how these neurophysiological markers compare across psychiatric conditions is not well characterized. The utility of biomarkers in clinical trials and practice would be significantly advanced by well-powered transdiagnostic studies. The Global Research Initiative on the Neurophysiology of Schizophrenia (GRINS) project aims to address these questions through a large, multi-center cohort study involving East Asian populations. To promote transparency and reproducibility, we describe the protocol for the GRINS project. Methods The research procedure consists of an initial screening interview followed by three subsequent sessions: an introductory interview, an evaluation visit, and an overnight neurophysiological recording session. Data from multiple domains, including demographic and clinical characteristics, behavioral performance (cognitive tasks, motor sequence tasks), and neurophysiological metrics (both awake and sleep electroencephalography), are collected by research groups specialized in each domain. Conclusion Pilot results from the GRINS project demonstrate the feasibility of this study protocol and highlight the importance of such research, as well as its potential to study a broader range of patients with psychiatric conditions. Through GRINS, we are generating a valuable dataset across multiple domains to identify neurophysiological markers of schizophrenia individually and in combination. By applying this protocol to related mental disorders often confounded with each other, we can gather information that offers insight into the neurophysiological characteristics and underlying mechanisms of these severe conditions, informing objective diagnosis, stratification for clinical research, and ultimately, the development of better-targeted treatment matching in the clinic.

Background: Aberrant functional connectivity is a hallmark of schizophrenia. The precise nature and mechanism of dysconnectivity in schizophrenia remains unclear, but evidence suggests that dysconnectivity is different in wake versus sleep. Microstate analysis uses electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate large-scale patterns of coordinated brain activity by clustering EEG data into a small set of recurring spatial patterns, or microstates. We hypothesized that this technique would allow us to probe connectivity between brain networks at a fine temporal resolution and uncover previously unknown sleep-specific dysconnectivity. Methods: We studied microstates during sleep in patients with schizophrenia by analyzing high-density EEG sleep data from 114 patients with schizophrenia and 79 control participants. We used a polarity-insensitive k-means analysis to extract a set of 6 microstate topographies. Results: These 6 states included 4 widely reported canonical microstates. In patients and control participants, falling asleep was characterized by a shift from microstates A, B, and C to microstates D, E, and F. Microstate F was decreased in patients during wake, and microstate E was decreased in patients during sleep. The complexity of microstate transitions was greater in patients than control participants during wake, but this reversed during sleep. Conclusions: Our findings reveal behavioral state–dependent patterns of cortical dysconnectivity in schizophrenia. Furthermore, these findings are largely unrelated to previous sleep-related EEG markers of schizophrenia such as decreased sleep spindles. Therefore, these findings are driven by previously undescribed sleep-related pathology in schizophrenia.

BackgroundThis study evaluates the symptomatic management of prolonged pleural air leaks following pulmonary resection, assesses the efficacy and safety of chest tube placement, and introduces experiences with high-positioned chest tube insertion.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 84 patients with prolonged pleural air leaks after lung surgery at Ningbo No.2 Hospital from January 2022 to December 2023. These patients were divided into a conservative treatment group (Group A, n = 64) and a chest tube placement group (Group B, n = 20). The propensity score matching method was applied to balance confounders between the two groups, resulting in 12 matched pairs. The study compared the time to chest tube removal, average hospital stays time, postoperative drainage volume, and facial visual analog pain score between the two groups.ResultsThe average hospital stays and chest tube removal time of patients in group B were significantly lower than those of patients in group A (8.00 ± 1.12 vs. 9.75 ± 1.60 days, P = 0.003, 6.92 ± 1.08 vs. 8.58 ± 1.67 days, P = 0.005, respectively). However, the mean facial visual analog pain score in group B was higher than that in group A (1.58 ± 0.58 vs. 1.00 ± 0.01, P = 0.020). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of postoperative drainage volume.ConclusionsFor patients with prolonged air leaks, additional chest tube placement postoperatively significantly reduces both hospitals stay duration and chest tube indwelling time compared to conservative treatment. This method may be a potential treatment measure for prolonged air leak in selected patients.

Time-dependent consolidation behavior of unsaturated soils is a vital problem in the geotechnical engineering. With the aid of the Fredlund consolidation theory, this work further assumes the total stress of soils skeleton freely change, and extends the Fredlund consolidation theory to a Biot-type theory, establishing the fully-coupled equation model of multilayered unsaturated poroelastic media with transversely isotropic permeability. To convert the partial differential governing equation into ordinary differential equations, the integration transform technology is applied. Subsequently, the precise integration method is used to acquire the time-dependent consolidation solution of multilayered unsaturated media with transversely isotropic permeability in the transformed domain, which is further solved in the actual domain by the inverse Hankel transform. A verification examples is provided to compare the present results with the existing work in the literature, showing a great coincidence and proving the feasibility of the present solution. Finally, numerous numerical examples are presented to investigate the evolution of excess pore pressure and settlement under quasi-static loads, revealing the consolidation behavior of unsaturated soils. The results demonstrates that the ramping time, stratification, permeability, depth and m1w have a significant effect on the consolidation behavior.

BackgroundThe relationship between peripheral sensitivity to thyroid hormones, as indicated by the ratio of free triiodothyronine (fT3) to free thyroxine (fT4) (fT3/fT4), and the prognosis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear.MethodsThis study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2012. MetS was defined based on the criteria established by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). Kaplan–Meier survival curves, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and Cox proportional hazards models were employed to investigate the association between peripheral thyroid sensitivity and mortality outcomes among adults with MetS.ResultsA total of 3,101 adult participants (1,594 males and 1,507 females; median age: 52.00 years) with MetS were included in the analysis. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that elevated levels of fT4 were positively associated with increased risks of both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the MetS population [adjustedhazard ratio (aHR): 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.94–3.87, p < 0.001 for all-cause mortality; aHR: 3.93, 95% CI: 2.07–7.45, p < 0.001 for cardiovascular mortality]. Conversely, higher levels of fT3 and the fT3/fT4 ratio were found to be protective factors, reducing the mortality risk in the MetS population (fT3: aHR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.57–0.99, p = 0.046 for all-cause mortality; fT3/fT4 ratio: aHR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.67–0.85, p < 0.001 for all-cause mortality; aHR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.52–0.83, p < 0.001 for cardiovascular mortality). The fT3/fT4 ratio exhibited a nonlinear association with all-cause mortality, but a linear and inverse association with cardiovascular mortality.ConclusionThe findings of this study suggest that higher peripheral thyroid sensitivity, as indicated by the fT3/fT4 ratio, may be associated with reduced mortality risks among adults with MetS. Further research is warranted to validate these associations.

BackgroundCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent adverse effect experienced by cancer patients while receiving and after treatment, impacting as many as 90% of individuals. Although CRF is common, the genetic processes responsible for it and their influence on individual vulnerability are not well understood and are still being investigated.ObjectiveThe primary objective of this scoping review is to identify and assess genes linked to the vulnerability and severity of CRF. This will help us better understand the genetic factors involved and assist in developing targeted nursing treatments in clinical settings.MethodsThis review followed the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed in databases, such as PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, CNKI, and VIP, encompassing genetic association studies on CRF published up to February 25, 2024. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tools were used to assess the quality of observational studies.ResultsThis evaluation encompassed a comprehensive analysis of 14 studies that involved 3,254 patients. The results indicate strong connections between CRF and various inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), and circadian rhythm genes (CLOCK, PER).ConclusionThis scoping review emphasizes the significant genetic factor in CRF, with multiple genes showing distinct effects on cancer fatigue symptoms. Identifying these genes enhances our comprehension of CRF and unveils novel avenues for cancer treatment approaches. Future research should prioritize conducting cohort studies to monitor alterations in gene expression pre- and post-treatment, hence improving individualized medicinal strategies in oncology.

In this study, the mechanical behavior and microstructure of a hot-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet under free-end torsion with torsional axis along rolling direction (RD), normal direction (ND) and 45° in ND-RD plane, have been investigated both experimentally and numerically. The mechanical behavior under torsion, including stress-strain response, Swift effect and strain hardening rate, present obvious anisotropy. The Swift effect is sensitive to the direction of torsion axis and exhibits remarkable anisotropy with axial elongation in ND sample and axial shortening in RD and 45° samples. The axial elongation or shortening is determined by both slips and extension twin, with extension twin exerting a greater influence on the extent of the axial deformation. During shear straining, the dominant deformation mode transforms basal slip to prismatic slip with the axial direction deviating from ND to RD, while the second-order pyramidal ⟨c+a⟩ slip is nearly not activated during whole deformation attributed to its high critical resolved shear stress. Based on the effective Schmid factor (ESF) of deformation modes, the grains with favored orientation would get activation of {101‾2} extension twin due to the high ESF, resulting in the different twin volume fractions. Additionally, the activation of twin relative to basal slip has a connection with the increasing trend of normalized strain hardening rate.

Abstract Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis epitomize a class of insidious and relentless neurological conditions that are difficult to cure. Conventional therapeutic regimens often fail due to the late onset of symptoms, which occurs well after irreversible neurodegeneration has begun. The integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) further impedes efficacious drug delivery to the central nervous system, presenting a formidable challenge in the pharmacological treatment of NDDs. Recent scientific inquiries have shifted focus toward the peripheral biological systems, investigating their influence on central neuropathology through the lens of extracellular vesicles (EVs). These vesicles, distinguished by their ability to breach the BBB, are emerging as dual operatives in the context of NDDs, both as conveyors of pathogenic entities and as prospective vectors for therapeutic agents. This review critically summarizes the burgeoning evidence on the role of extracerebral EVs, particularly those originating from bone, adipose tissue, and gut microbiota, in modulating brain pathophysiology. It underscores the duplicity potential of peripheral EVs as modulators of disease progression and suggests their potential as novel vehicles for targeted therapeutic delivery, positing a transformative impact on the future landscape of NDD treatment strategies. Search strategy A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from January 2000 to December 2023. The search combined the following terms using Boolean operators: “neurodegenerative disease” OR “Alzheimer’s disease” OR “Parkinson’s disease” OR “Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis” AND “extracellular vesicles” OR “exosomes” OR “outer membrane vesicles” AND “drug delivery systems” AND “blood-brain barrier”. MeSH terms were employed when searching PubMed to refine the results. Studies were included if they were published in English, involved human subjects, and focused on the peripheral origins of EVs, specifically from bone, adipose tissue, and gut microbiota, and their association with related diseases such as osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, and gut dysbiosis. Articles were excluded if they did not address the role of EVs in the context of NDDs or did not discuss therapeutic applications. The reference lists of selected articles were also examined to identify additional relevant studies.

Quasar feedback may play a key role in the evolution of massive galaxies. The dust-reddened quasar F2M110648.35+480712 at z = 0.4352 is one of the few cases at its redshift that exhibits powerful quasar feedback through bipolar outflows. Our new observation with the integral field unit mode of the Near-infrared Spectrograph on board JWST opens a new window to examine this spectacular outflow through the Pa α emission line with ~3× better spatial resolution than previous work. The morphology and kinematics of the Pa α nebula confirm the existence of a bipolar outflow extending on a scale of ∼17 × 14 kpc and with a velocity reaching ∼1100 km s ^−1 . The higher spatial resolution of our new observation leads to more reliable measurements of outflow kinematics. Considering only the spatially resolved outflow and assuming an electron density of 100 cm ^−2 , the mass, momentum, and kinetic energy outflow rates are ∼50–210 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , ∼(0.3–1.7) × 10 ^36 dynes (∼14%–78% of the quasar photon momentum flux), and ∼​​​​​​(0.16–1.27) × 10 ^44 erg s ^−1 (∼0.02%–0.20% of the quasar bolometric luminosity), respectively. The local instantaneous outflow rates generally decrease radially. We infer that the quasar is powerful enough to drive the outflow, while stellar processes cannot be overlooked as a contributing energy source. The mass outflow rate is ∼0.4–1.5 times the star formation rate, and the ratio of kinetic energy outflow rate to the quasar bolometric luminosity is comparable to the minimum value required for negative quasar feedback in simulations. This outflow may help regulate the star formation activity within the system to some extent.

Summary: Previous research indicates that individuals with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) show impaired inhibitory control and abnormal EEG/ERP patterns. However, it is unclear how those individuals with excessive Internet game use (EUG) but without addiction differ. This study examined inhibitory control, resting EEG, and ERP in EUG gamers compared to non-gamers. Fifteen participants in each group underwent 4-min eyes-closed EEG recordings and a color-word Stroop task. Results showed no significant differences in reaction time, accuracy, or P3 amplitude between EUG gamers and non-gamers. However, EUG gamers exhibited shortened P3 latency, which may suggest enhanced inhibitory control. Additionally, EUG gamers showed reduced theta and alpha band power during the resting state compared to non-gamers. These findings suggest that excessive gaming without addiction may enhance inhibitory control and influence brain activity differently from IGD.

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), as an eco-friendly and promising technology that can transform free metal ions into stable precipitation, has been extensively used in remediation of heavy metal contamination. However, its depressed efficiency of heavy metal elimination remains in question due to the inhibition effect of heavy metal toxicity on bacterial activity. In this work, an efficient, low-cost manganese (Mn) elimination strategy by coupling MICP with chitosan biopolymer as an additive with reduced treatment time was suggested, optimized, and implemented. The influences of chitosan at different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.30 %, w/v) on bacterial growth, enzyme activity, Mn removal efficiency and microstructure properties of the resulting precipitation were investigated. Results showed that Mn content was reduced by 94.5 % within 12 h with 0.15 % chitosan addition through adsorption and biomineralization as MnCO3 (at an initial Mn concentration of 3 mM), demonstrating a two-thirds decrease in remediation time compared to the chitosan-absent system, whereas maximum urease activity increased by ∼50 %. Microstructure analyses indicated that the mineralized precipitates were spherical-shaped MnCO3, and a smaller size and more uniform distribution of MnCO3 is obtained by the regulation of abundant amino and hydroxyl groups in chitosan. These results demonstrate that chitosan accelerates nucleation and tunes the growth of MnCO3 by providing nucleation sites for mineral formation and alleviating the toxicity of metal ions, which has the potential to upgrade MICP process in a sustainable and effective manner. This work provides a reference for further understanding of the biomineralization regulation mechanism, and gives a new perspective into the application of biopolymer-intensified strategies of MICP technology in heavy metal contamination.

Abstract Introduction Recently, chloride channel CLIC‐like 1 (CLCC1) was reported to be a novel ALS‐related gene. We aimed to screen CLCC1 variants in our ALS cohort and further explore the genotype–phenotype correlation of CLCC1‐related ALS. Methods We screened rare damaging variants in CLCC1 from our cohorts of 1005 ALS patients and 1224 healthy controls with whole‐exome sequencing in Central South China. Fisher's exact test was conducted for association analysis at the entire gene level and single variant level. Results In total, four heterozygous missense variants in CLCC1 were identified from four unrelated sporadic ALS patients and predicted to be putative pathogenic by in silico tools and protein model prediction, accounting for 0.40% of all patients (4/1005). The four variants were c.A275C (p.Q92P), c.G1139A (p.R380K), c.C1244T (p.T415M), and c.G1328A (p.R443Q), respectively, which had not been reported in ALS patients previously. Three of four variants were located in exon 10. Patients harboring CLCC1 variants seemed to share a group of similar clinical features, including earlier age at onset, rapid progression, spinal onset, and vulnerable cognitive status. Statistically, we did not find CLCC1 to be associated with the risk of ALS at the entire gene level or single variant level. Conclusion Our findings further expanded the genetic and clinical spectrum of CLCC1‐related ALS and provided more genetic evidence for anion channel involvement in the pathogenesis of ALS, but further investigations are needed to verify our findings.

Abstract Background Omental metastasis is the major cause of ovarian cancer recurrence and shortens patient survival, which can be largely attributed to the dynamic evolution of the fertile metastatic microenvironment driven by cancer cells. Previously, we found that adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) undergoing a phenotype shift toward cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) participated in the orchestrated omental premetastatic niche for ovarian cancer. Here, we aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods Small extracellular vesicles were isolated from ovarian cancer cell lines (ES-2 and its highly metastatic subline, ES-2-HM) and patient ascites using ultracentrifugation. Functional experiments, including Transwell and EdU assays, and molecular detection, including Western blot, immunofluorescence, and RT–qPCR, were performed to investigate the activation of ADSCs in vitro. High-throughput transcriptional sequencing and functional assays were employed to identify the crucial functional molecules inducing CAF-like activation of ADSCs and the downstream effector of miR-320a. The impact of extracellular vesicles and miR-320a-activated ADSCs on tumor growth and metastasis was assessed in subcutaneous and orthotopic ovarian cancer xenograft mouse models. The expression of miR-320a in human samples was evaluated using in situ hybridization staining. Results Primary human ADSCs cocultured with small extracellular vesicles, especially those derived from ES-2-HM, exhibited boosted migration, invasion, and proliferation capacities and elevated α-SMA and FAP levels. Tumor-derived small extracellular vesicles increased α-SMA-positive stromal cells, fostered omental metastasis, and shortened the survival of mice harboring orthotopic ovarian cancer xenografts. miR-320a was abundant in highly metastatic cell-derived extracellular vesicles, evoked dramatic CAF-like transition of ADSCs, targeted the 3′-untranslated region of integrin subunit alpha 7 and attenuated its expression. miR-320a overexpression in ovarian cancer was associated with omental metastasis and shorter survival. miR-320a-activated ADSCs facilitated tumor cell growth and omental metastasis. Depletion of integrin alpha 7 triggered CAF-like activation of ADSCs in vitro. The steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) has become one of the most prominent BCI paradigms with high information transfer rate, and has been widely applied in rehabilitation and assistive applications. This paper proposes a least-square (LS) unified framework to summarize the correlation analysis (CA)-based SSVEP spatial filtering methods from a machine learning perspective. Within this framework, the commonalities and differences between various spatial filtering methods appear apparent, the interpretation of computational factors becomes intuitive, and spatial filters can be determined by solving a generalized optimization problem with non-linear and regularization items. Moreover, the proposed LS framework provides the foundation of utilizing the knowledge behind these spatial filtering methods in further classification/regression model designs. Through a comparative analysis of existing representative spatial filtering methods, recommendations are made for the superior and robust design strategies. These recommended strategies are further integrated to fill the research gaps and demonstrate the ability of the proposed LS framework to promote algorithmic improvements, resulting in five new spatial filtering methods. This study could offer significant insights in understanding the relationships between various design strategies in the spatial filtering methods from the machine learning perspective, and would also contribute to the development of the SSVEP recognition methods with high performance.
