60. Relative age effect across the talent identification process of youth female soccer players in the United States: Influence of birth year, position, biological maturation, and skill level.

Abstract

The aims of the study were to examine the relative age effect (RAE) in youth female soccer players in the United States (US) and the influence of birth year, playing position, estimated maturation and skill ratings. The sample consisted of 3,364 youth female soccer players who were active in the 2021--2022 US soccer season across three main stages of the talent identification (TID) process for Youth National Team (YNT) players (i.e., Club, TID Center, and YNT). A prevalent RAE for players born in Q1 was present in the full sample. A significant prevalence for Q1 players were identified for both Club and TID Center, but not YNT. A significant RAE prevalence for Q1 players was identified for most of the age groups from U13--U18 at Club (except U18) and TID Center (except U17). Significant RAEs prevalence for players born in Q1 were found in Goalkeepers, Center Backs, Midfielders, and Center Forwards at Club and TID Center (except Wide Forwards). The data identified a consistent RAE prevalence for Q1 players in early and on-time-maturers across all levels. An even birthdate spread was evident in YNT with a prevalence for Q4 players and a higher percentage of late-maturers than elsewhere in the TID process. Results reinforce evidence indicating RAEs still exist in soccer, yet show for the first time within a youth female soccer TID process, the influence of contextual factors on the prevalence of RAE. Abstract

The proceedings of the 3rd Annual Deep Brain Stimulation Think Tank summarize the most contemporary clinical, electrophysiological, imaging, and computational work on DBS for the treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease. Significant innovations of the past year are emphasized. The Think Tank's contributors represent a unique multidisciplinary ensemble of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, engineers, and members of industry. Presentations and discussions covered a broad range of topics, including policy and advocacy considerations for the future of DBS, connectomic approaches to DBS targeting, developments in electrophysiology and related strides toward responsive DBS systems, and recent developments in sensor and device technologies.

78. Blood flow restriction as a post-exercise recovery strategy: A systematic review of the current status of the literature.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to systematically review the current literature on blood flow restriction (BFR) as a post-exercise recovery strategy. Experimental studies investigating the effect of BFR on recovery after exercise were included. Only studies meeting the following inclusion criteria were selected: (a) studies investigating about BFR as a post-exercise recovery strategy in athletes and healthy individuals; (b) the full text being available in English; (c) experimental research study design. Studies that exclusively analyzed BFR as a recovery strategy during the exercise (e.g., recovery strategy between bouts of exercise) were excluded. A literature review was conducted on the PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science electronic databases up until May 7th, 2023. The main findings were that (i) 9 studies investigated passive BFR as a post-exercise recovery strategy, which shows a significant lack of research in both team and individual sports (especially in female populations), and only 2 studies used active BFR protocols; (ii) although a high quality range of studies was observed, there were methodological limitations such as BFR interventions that were usually conducted after fatiguing protocols or fitness tests, which may not represent the real exercise (e.g., a sprint session of 6 sets of 50 m may induce muscle damage but it does not represent the demands of a team sport like rugby or soccer); (iii) there is a lack of consistency in BFR protocols (e.g., number of cycles or duration of the occlusion-reperfusion periods) for recovery; (iv) some studies showed beneficial effects while others found no positive or detrimental effects of BFR as a post-exercise recovery strategy in comparison with the control/SHAM group. In conclusion, only 11 studies investigated BFR as a post-exercise recovery strategy and there is not any significant amount of evidence in team or individual sports (especially in female populations). BFR could be a potential post-exercise recovery strategy, but practitioners should use caution when applying this method of recovery for their athletes and clients. In addition, it would be of interest for high performance-related practitioners to have a better understanding of the benefits of BFR interventions combined with either active or passive forms of exercise as a post-exercise recovery strategy. 79. Student Trustees in the United States: Exploring the Foundations and Issues of Student Involvement in Public Higher Education Governance

Abstract

Student members of governing boards, commonly called student trustees, hold important roles in their institution's community. They have the same authority as other board members, having direct input on the myriad issues today's governing boards must consider. Scant literature addresses these students, studies are published sometimes decades apart and often focus on varying topics rather than building a unified research narrative. The present study draws together the different strands of research, providing a comprehensive examination of this under studied population. Using data collected from student trustees, student government presidents, and governing board members at public colleges and universities in the United States, this study answers three lingering questions. First, what are the demographics of student trustees? This basic question has not been addressed by researchers in nearly three decades, leaving a fundamental question unanswered. Second, to what degree do student trustees engage in representative behavior? Prior publications suggest widespread concern that student trustees may place their own wellbeing as students before their fiduciary duty towards their institution. The data used here allows for a unique exploration of this concern from multiple perspectives. Finally, does the presence of student trustees have an effect on the relationship between students and governing boards? Student trustees came about in the 1960s as a means to bridge the divide between these two groups, but no study to date has explored whether this goal has been accomplished. Demographic findings show that student trustees have become more diverse in terms of race and gender over time. Near equal numbers of men and women serve in these roles today. Although most student trustees identify as White or Caucasian, there is greater racial diversity than in prior studies. Findings demonstrate that student trustees engage in some degree of representative behavior, student outreach being most common. Other forms are reported at lower levels. Appointment method can matter, with some evidence suggesting that elected student trustees are more likely to engage in representative behavior. Finally, these data suggest that the presence of student trustees is generally not associated with increased satisfaction with the mechanisms governing boards use to engage students. 94. The Rise of Student Trusteeship in the United States: A Case Study at Indiana University

Abstract

Colleges and universities across the United States have, over the centuries of their existence, gradually developed the systems of governance that we see today. Typically, this has taken the form of a governing board comprised of individuals with some connection to the institution. Although major restructuring of institutional governance may seem like a far off thing in the past, some significant changes to governing boards are quite recent. Among these important and recent changes is the further broadening of the constituencies included on college and university governing boards to include students. Indiana University, one of the largest public institutions in the American Midwest, is one such institution to see a student added to their board. After a brief exploration of the origins of student membership on governing boards, this article examines early student interactions with the Board at Indiana, how the student position on the Board was developed at Indiana University, the individuals who have served in the role, and how they have shaped it as time has progressed.

Abstract

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been widely used to manage debilitating neurological symptoms in movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite its well-established symptomatic benefits, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying DBS and its possible effect on the accumulation of pathological proteins in neurodegeneration remains limited. Accumulation and oligomerization of the protein alpha-synuclein ( α -Syn) are implicated in the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in PD, making α -Syn a potential therapeutic target for disease modification. We examined the effects of high frequency electrical stimulation on α -Syn levels and oligomerization in cell and rodent models. High frequency stimulation, mimicking DBS parameters used for PD, was combined with viral-mediated overexpression of α -Syn in cultured rat primary cortical neurons or in substantia nigra of rats. Bimolecular protein complementation with split fluorescent protein reporters was used to detect and quantify α -Syn oligomers. High frequency electrical stimulation reduced the expression of PD-associated mutant α -Syn and mitigated α -Syn oligomerization in cultured neurons. Furthermore, DBS in the substantia nigra, but not the subthalamic nucleus, decreased overall levels of α -Syn, including oligomer levels, in the substantia nigra. Taken together, our results demonstrate that direct high frequency stimulation can reduce accumulation and pathological forms of α -Syn in cultured neurons in vitro and in substantia nigra in vivo. Thus, DBS therapy could have a role beyond symptomatic treatment, with potential disease-modifying properties that can be exploited to target pathological proteins in neurodegenerative diseases. • High frequency stimulation reduces α -synuclein accumulation in cultured neurons. • Deep brain stimulation of the substantia nigra reduces α -synuclein accumulation in rats. • Deep brain stimulation could have a role beyond symptomatic treatment, with potential disease-modifying properties.
