Abstract

A study investigated the determinants of business failures or bankruptcy for a sample of 949 listed UK firms between 1987-1994. In particular, it evaluated the impact of company size, industry sector and economic cycle on the likelihood of bankruptcy. The analysis incorporated tests for omitted variable bias and heteroskedasticity. Profitability, leverage and cash flow have significant effects on the likelihood of bankruptcy. Probit and logit models used in the study were found to perform better than the discriminant analysis method.

Abstract

A nested logit model of new vehicle demands was developed and estimated to compare the demands for fuel efficient vehicles and fuel inefficient vehicles. This study employed detailed microdata on consumer make/model purchases of new vehicles gathered through the 1989 New Car Buyer Competitive Dynamics Survey. Results demonstrated a nested structure of vehicle choice, which is characterized by a correlation among the error terms for purchases within a single fuel efficiency category. Findings confirmed that a vehicle has a greater chance of being purchased if it boasts of improved size, safety and quality. Fuel efficient vehicles were found to be popular among females, lower income households, younger consumers, nonwhite buyers and buyers residing in highly populated areas. Vehicle demands were characterized by an approximate unitary elasticity in terms of capital cost. Demands were also elastic in terms of operation costs.
