Abstract

Stable room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been used as novel reaction solvents. They can solubilize complex polar molecules such as cyclodextrins and glycopeprides. Their wetting ability and viscosity allow them to be coated onto fused silica capillaries. Thus, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and the analogous chloride salt can be used as stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC). Using inverse GC, one can examine the nature of these ionic liquids via their interactions with a variety of compounds. The Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants were determined for both ionic liquids and a popular commercial polysiloxane stationary phase. Ionic liquid stationary phases seem to have a dual nature. They appear to act as a low-polarity stationary phase to nonpolar compounds. However, molecules with strong proton donor groups, in particular, are tenaciously retained. The nature of the anion can have a significant effect on both the solubilizing ability and the selectivity of ionic liquid stationary phases. It appears that the unusual properties of ionic liquids could make them beneficial in many areas of separation science.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the formation of fluorinated heterocycles from aromatic silyl enol ethers. The reaction of 2-hydroxyacetophenone or 2'-hydroxypropiophenone with ethyl 2,2-dihydrononafluorohexanoate in the presence of triethylamine generated aryloxy esters. Results demonstrate a rich mechanistic diversity despite the low yields that were observed. It is also interesting to note that similar compounds could exhibit such reactions via different pathways.

Abstract

The actions of 1,1-difluorallyl and 1,1,2-trifluoroallyl carbocations in the Friedel-Crafts reaction were investigated. Findings showed that the substitution of a fluorine on the central carbon of the allylic cation has a very critical function. When fluorine is found only on the terminal carbon, further electrophilic substitutions are possible to provide cyclic compounds. Since, allylic compounds with fluorine on the central carbon do not cyclize while those with no fluorine on the central carbon of the allyl carbocation undergo cyclization, the beta-fluorine destabilizes carbocations.

Abstract

We report the crystallization and photoluminescence (PL) properties of amorphous Si:H/SiNx:H multilayer (ML) films treated by step-by-step laser annealing. The results of Raman measurements show that the nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si) grains are formed in the a-Si:H layers under the constrained growth mechanism. The blue shift of PL peak with grain size is observed and can be attributed to the quantum confinement effect. For comparison, we also report the crystallization and PL of a-Si:H/SiNx:H ML samples by normal one-step treatment. This method of step-by-step laser treatment will be a candidate to make nc-Si quantum dots in amorphous Si:H/SiNx:H ML as an active layer in microcavities.

Abstract

International audience; This study investigated the effect of Angelica sinensis polysaccharides (APS-3c) on rat osteoarthritis (OA) model in vivo and rat interleukin-1-beta-(IL-1 beta-) stimulated chondrocytes in vitro. APS-3c was administrated into rat OA knee joints and had protective effects on rat OA cartilage in vivo. Primary rat articular chondrocytes were cotreated with APS-3c and IL-1 beta in vitro. 2 similar to 50 mu g/mL APS-3c had no effect on chondrocytes viability, whereas it increased the proteoglycans (PGs) synthesis inhibited by IL-1 beta. Microarray analysis showed that the significant changes were concentrated in the genes which were involved in PGs synthesis. RT-PCR confirmed that treatment with APS-3c increased the mRNA expression of aggrecan and glycosyltransferases (GTs) inhibited by IL-1 beta but did not affect the mRNA expression of matrix-degrading enzymes. These results indicate that APS-3c can improve PGs synthesis of chondrocytes on rat OA model in vivo and IL-1 beta-stimulated chondrocytes in vitro, which is due to the promotion of the expression of aggrecan and GTs involved in PGs synthesis but not the inhibition of the expression of matrix-degrading enzymes. Our findings suggest the clinical relevance of APS-3c in the prospective of future alternative medical treatment for OA.

Abstract

A convenient new route to 2-(F-alkyl)-4-hydroxyquinolines has been developed. In the presence of triethylamine, treatment of ethyl 2,2-dihydropolyfluoroalkanoates with aromatic amines in acetonitrile at 70 °C led to a mixture of the corresponding enamines and imines, which was cyclized in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) at 170 °C to give 2-(F-alkyl)-4-hydroxyquinolines in good yield.

Abstract

The ability of nanoscaled ZnO films to enhance fluorescence was studied. We found that the fluorescence intensities of Cy5, rhodamine 6G, and fluorescein can be enhanced about 10-fold on nanoscaled ZnO films as compared to that on glass substrates. The lifetimes of all samples were measured, and no obvious change in lifetime was observed for dyes on different substrates. The mechanism for the nanoscaled ZnO film enhanced fluorescence appears to be different from that for the metal–fluorophore systems.

Abstract

ZnO micro/nano complex structure films, including reticulate papillary nodes, petal-like and flake-hole, have been self-assembled by a hydrothermal technique at different temperatures without metal catalysts. The wettability of the above film surfaces was modified with a simple coating of heptadecafluorodecyltrimethoxy-silane in toluene. After modifying, the surface of ZnO film grown at 50 °C was converted from superhydrophilic with a water contact angle lower than 5° to superhydrophobic with a water contact angle of 165°. Additionally, the surface of reticulate papillary nodes ZnO film grown at 100 °C had excellent superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 173° and a sliding angle lower than 2°. Furthermore, the water contact angle on the surface of petal-like and flake-hole ZnO films grown at 150 °C and 200 °C were found to be 140° and 120°, respectively. The wettability for the samples was found to depend strongly on the surface morphology which results from the growth temperature.

Abstract

According to the processes of nucleation and growth of nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) with shape changing from sphere-like to disc-like in the a-SiNx/a-Si:H/a-SiNx sandwich structure or a-Si :H/a-SiNx multilayer structure, we have proposed the theoretical model of constrained crystallinzation based on the classical thermodynamics, in which the increase of the interfacial energy between nc-Si and a-SiNx causes the growth of nc-Si to halt, and concludes the critical thickness of a-Si sublayer (34 nm) for constrained crystallization, The model of constrained growth has been validated in a-SiNx/nc-Si/a-SiNx sandwich and nc-Si/a-SiNx multilayer structures formed by laser annealing and thermal annealing.

Abstract

Osteomyelitis is the inflammation of bone which is treated by a high dose of antibiotics given intravenously for 4-6 weeks. However, at present locally administered antibiotic such as gentamicin poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bead is nonbiodegradable and a secondary surgery is often inevitable. This study described the biodegradable material poly- D, L-lactide (PLA) with 80 kDa molecular weight that could be used as a potential antibiotic carrier for local drug release. PLA was first dissolved in tetrahydrofuran followed by blending with levofloxacin (LFX) in a physical way. The blend was then molded into beads. The optimized weight ratio between PLA and LFX was designated as 45 : 15. Glass transition temperature and surface ultramicrostructure of the beads were measured. In vitro tests of drug release and bacteriostasis demonstrated that the PLA-LFX beads released high concentrations of antibiotic for the period of time (i.e., 6 weeks), which is needed to treat bone infection. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
