The vertical distribution of tropospheric O3 from ozonesondes is compared with that from In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS) measurements collected at 23 pairs of sites between about 30° S and 55° N from 1995 to 2021. Profiles of tropospheric O3 from IAGOS are generally in good agreement with ozonesonde observations from electrochemical concentration cells (ECCs), Brewer–Mast sondes, and carbon–iodine sensors, with average biases of 2.58, -0.28 , and 0.67 ppb and correlation coefficients (R) of 0.72, 0.82, and 0.66, respectively. Agreement between aircraft and Indian-sonde observations is poor, with an average bias of 15.32 ppb and an R value of 0.44. The O3 concentration observed by ECC sondes is, on average, 5 %–10 % higher than that observed by IAGOS, and the relative bias increases modestly with altitude. For other sonde types, there are some seasonal and altitudinal variations in the relative bias with respect to the IAGOS measurements, but these appear to be caused by local differences. The distance between the station and airport, when within 4° (latitude and longitude), has little effect on the comparison results. For the ECC ozonesondes, the overall bias with respect to the IAGOS measurements varies from 5.7 to 9.8 ppb when the station pairs are grouped by station–airport distances of <1° (latitude and longitude), 1–2°, and 2–4°. Correlations for these groups correspond to R=0.8 , 0.9, and 0.7. These comparison results provide important information for merging ozonesonde and IAGOS measurement datasets. Colonization of the infant gut by microorganisms over the first year of life is crucial for development of a balanced immune response. Early alterations in the gastrointestinal microbiota of neonates has been linked with subsequent development of asthma and atopy in older children. Here we describe high-resolution culture-independent analysis of stool samples from 6-month old infants fed daily supplements of Lactobacillus casei subsp. Rhamnosus (LGG) or placebo in a double-blind, randomized Trial of Infant Probiotic Supplementation (TIPS). Bacterial community composition was examined using a high-density microarray, the 16S rRNA PhyloChip, and the microbial assemblages of infants with either high or low LGG abundance were compared. Communities with high abundance of LGG exhibited promotion of phylogenetically clustered taxa including a number of other known probiotic species, and were significantly more even in their distribution of community members. Ecologically, these aspects are characteristic of communities that are more resistant to perturbation and outgrowth of pathogens. PhyloChip analysis also permitted identification of taxa negatively correlated with LGG abundance that have previously been associated with atopy, as well as those positively correlated that may prove useful alternative targets for investigation as alternative probiotic species. From these findings we hypothesize that a key mechanism for the protective effect of LGG supplementation on subsequent development of allergic disease is through promotion of a stable, even, and functionally redundant infant gastrointestinal community.

The ozone (O3) variations in southeast China are largely different between mountainous forest areas located inland, and lowland urban areas located near the coast. Here, we selected these two kinds of areas to compare their similarities and differences in surface O3 variability from diurnal to seasonal scales. Our results show that in comparison with the lowland urban areas (coastal areas), the mountainous forest areas (inland areas) are characterized with less human activates, lower precursor emissions, wetter and colder meteorological conditions, and denser vegetation covers. This can lead to lower chemical O3 production and higher O3 deposition rates in the inland areas. The annual mean of 8-h O3 maximum concentrations (MDA8 O3) in the inland areas are ~15 μg·m−3 (i.e. ~15%) lower than that in the coastal areas. The day-to-day variation in surface O3 in the two types of the areas is rather similar, with a correlation coefficient of 0.75 between them, suggesting similar influences on large scales, such as weather patterns, regional O3 transport, and background O3. Over 2016–2020, O3 concentrations in all the areas shows a trend of "rising and then falling", with a peak in 2017 and 2018. Daily MDA8 O3 correlates with solar radiation most in the coastal areas, while in the inland areas, it is correlated with relative humidity most. Diurnally, during the morning, O3 concentrations in the inland areas increase faster than in the coastal areas in most seasons, mainly due to a faster increase in temperature and decrease in humidity. While in the evening, O3 concentrations decrease faster in the inland areas than in the coastal areas, mostly attributable to a higher titration effect in the inland areas. Seasonally, both areas share a double-peak variation in O3 concentrations, with two peaks in spring and autumn and two valleys in summer and winter. We found that the valley in summer is related to the summer Asian monsoon that induces large-scale convections bringing local O3 upward but blocking inflow of O3 downward, while the one in winter is due to low O3 production. The coastal areas experienced more exceedance days (~30 days per year) than inland areas (~5-10 days per year), with O3 sources largely from the northeast. Overall, the similarities and differences in O3 concentrations between inland and coastal areas in southeastern China are rather unique, reflecting the collective impact of geographic-related meteorology, O3 precursor emissions, and vegetation on surface O3 concentrations. A global-scale horizontally- and vertically-resolved ozone climatology can provide a detailed assessment of ozone variability. Here, the Trajectory-mapped Ozonesonde dataset for the Stratosphere and Troposphere (TOST) ozone climatology is improved and updated to the recent decade (1970s–2010s) on a grid of 5° × 5° × 1 km (latitude, longitude, and altitude) from the surface to 26 km altitude, with the most recent ozonesonde data re-evaluated following the ASOPOS-2 guidelines (GAW Report No. 268, 2021). Comparison between independent ozonesonde and trajectory-derived ozone shows good agreement in each decade, altitude, and station, with relative differences (RD) of 2–4 % in the troposphere and 0.5 % in the stratosphere. Comparisons of TOST with aircraft and two satellite datasets, the Satellite Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), show comparable overall agreement. The updated TOST outperforms the previous version with higher data coverage in all latitude bands and altitudes and 14–17 % lower RD compared to independent ozonesondes, employing twice as many ozonesonde profiles and an updated trajectory simulation model. Higher uncertainties in TOST are where data are sparse, i.e., over the southern high latitudes and the tropics, and before the 1980s, and where variability is high, i.e., at the surface and upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). Caution should therefore be taken when using TOST in these spaces and times. TOST captures global ozone distributions and temporal variations, showing an overall insignificant change of stratospheric ozone after 1998. Surface ozone (O3) is influenced not only by anthropogenic emissions but also by meteorological factors, with wind direction being one of the most overlooked factors. Here, we combine the observational data of both O3 and wind flow to compare the variation in surface O3 with wind direction between coastal and inland regions of Fujian, a province in the southeast coast of China with complicated topography. We further conduct a numerical simulation using a global chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem, to interpret the observational results, explore the linkages between these O3 variations and wind flows, and identify the dominant processes for the occurrence of high O3 that varies with wind flows. The results from the observations over 2015–2021 suggest that, over coastal regions, surface O3 concentrations show a strong dependence on wind flow changes. On average, during the daytime, when southeasterly winds prevail, the mean of O3 concentrations reaches 83.5 μg/m3, which is 5.0 μg/m3 higher than its baseline values (the mean O3 concentrations), while the northwesterly winds tend to reduce surface O3 by 6.4 μg/m3. The positive O3 anomalies with southeasterly wind are higher in the autumn and summer than in the spring and winter. During the nighttime, the onshore northeasterly winds are associated with enhanced O3 levels, likely due to the airmass containing less NO2, alleviating the titration effects. Over inland regions, however, surface O3 variations are less sensitive to wind flow changes. The GEOS-Chem simulations show that the prevailing southeasterly and southwesterly winds lead to the positive anomaly of chemical reactions of O3 over coastal regions, suggesting enhanced photochemical production rates. Furthermore, southeasterly winds also aid in transporting more O3 from the outer regions into the coastal regions of Fujian, which jointly results in elevated surface O3 when southeasterly winds dominates. When affected by wind flows in different directions, the chemical reaction and transport in the inland regions do not exhibit significant differences regarding their impact on O3. This could be one of the reasons for the difference in O3 distribution between coastal and inland regions. This laboratory experiment provides undergraduate students enrolled in organic chemistry the opportunity to design and synthesize their own peptide, which is then tested for antimicrobial activity. After reading a primary scientific paper on antimicrobial peptides, students design and synthesize their own hexapeptide that they hypothesize will have antimicrobial activity. The students characterize their products by analyzing liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and antimicrobial bioassay data for their synthesized peptide. The students are able to complete the synthesis and prepare their samples for analysis in three 3-4 h lab periods; instructors perform LC-MS and a bioassay with the peptides and provide data to students for analysis. This exercise is flexible and can be altered to include students performing the bioassay, or to meet different time constraints or target student populations. This experiment allows students to increase their knowledge of solid phase peptide chemistry and gain experience with developing and testing hypotheses through experimental design.
