54. Effect of laser acupuncture on adhesive small bowel obstruction

Abstract

Background: Adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) is one of the most common complications and is a major cause of re-admission after intra-abdominal surgery. The initial management of patients with ASBO is nonoperative treatment such as nil per os and decompression using a nasogastric tube. However, the ideal management of ASBO remains controversial. Methods: This study will be a prospective, single-center, double-blind randomized controlled trial. Ninety two participants diagnosed with ASBO will be randomly assigned to either the verum or the sham laser acupuncture (SLA) group in a 1:1 ratio. All participants will undergo laser acupuncture (LA) or SLA once a day on 6 acupoints (LI4, PC6, ST25, ST36, CV4 and CV12) for 6 consecutive days after enrollment. The primary outcome measure will be the success rate of conservative treatment for ASBO. Secondary outcomes will be time to oral intake and length of hospital stay. The serum levels of lipase, amylase, cortisol, motilin, ghrelin, and intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) will also be measured before intervention, on day 4, and on the day of discharge, respectively. Data will be analyzed by Chi-Squared test or t test between 2 groups. Objectives: The aim of this protocol is to investigate the clinical efficacy of LA on ASBO. Abstract

This paper presents an amplitude-shift-keying (ASK) demodulator for RF identification tags, which can be embedded on panel displays. The ASK demodulator was implemented in 3-[micro]m low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. Since the threshold voltages of LTPS TFTs are higher than CMOS transistors, the conventional demodulator implementation will degrade the demodulator sensitivity significantly. The novel full-wave demodulator circuit was proposed to resolve the issue of high threshold voltage and reduce the ripples of the demodulated envelope. Operated at 8 V, the demodulator consumes 1.6 mW of power. The input carrier frequency was tested up to 13.56 MHz, and the highest ASK modulated data rate is 100 kb/s. The circuit size of the LTPS TFT demodulator is 500 [micro]m x 450 [micro]m. Abstract

A phase-locked loop (PLL) with self-calibrated charge pumps (CPs) has been fabricated in a 3-[micro]m low-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistor (LTPS-TFT) technology. A voltage scaler and self-calibrated CPs are used to reduce the static phase error, reference spur, and jitter of an LTPS-TFT PLL. This PLL operates from 5.6 to 10.5 MHz at a supply of 8.4 V. Its area is 18.9 [mm.sup.2], and it consumes 7.81 mW at 10.5 MHz. The measured static phase error without and with calibration is 80 and 6.56 ns, respectively, at 10.5 MHz. The measured peak-to-peak jitter without and with calibration is 3.573 and 2.834 ns, respectively. The measured reference spur is -26.04 and -30.2 dBc without and with calibration, respectively. Abstract

Inverted thin-film transistors (TFT) with a self-aligned, lightly doped drain (LDD) structure are studied. The LDD structure, which was fabricated via a spacer process minus thesubsequent lithography, enables regulation of the channel electric field at thedrain junction for enhanced device operation. Experiments to quantify the device's current-voltage properties show a saturation current of around 11.25 micro-A at five V and a leakage current of around 0.03 pico-A per micrometer ofchannel width.

77. A Narrative Review of Complementary Nutritional Supplements for Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy.

Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common troublesome side effect and affects long-term activities of daily living. This neuropathic disorder is still difficult to treat with current clinical treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate and offer an updated perspective of complementary therapies for CIPN.Methods: This review included current databases, including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Database, Google Scholar, and Ovid Medline, published up to May 2019 in the English language, to summarize the role of nutrient supplements in CIPN, based on evidence from both animal and clinical studies.Results: A total of 58 studies were included in this review. There were 19 preclinical studies that reported mechanisms of effects and 31 clinical studies corroborated preclinical findings, including 22 randomized controlled trials and 3085 patients with CIPN. Interventions included vitamin E, vitamin B complex, glutamine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium/magnesium (Ca2+/Mg2+). The administration of various nutrients remains inconsistent, and limited evidence of effective ones for treating CIPN is available. However, glutamine and omega-3 fatty acids present potential as treatment options for CIPN. The evidence on vitamin E and vitamin B complex is inconclusive, and some forms of vitamin B, such as B6 or B12, await confirmation of their potential to offer protection from CIPN. Less robust evidence was found for nutrients such as acetyl-L-carnitine, α-Lipoic acid, glutathione, and Ca2+/Mg2+ for CIPN.Conclusion: Nutritional therapists seem to recommend nutrient supplements as potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective agents for both the prevention and management of CIPN. An understanding of this evolving literature is useful in exploring these therapies with patients who are considering using them. However, their effects against CIPN are still controversial due to the undetermined neuropathic mechanisms of different antineoplastic agents and complex drug interactions. 90. Complementary Therapy with Traditional Chinese Medicine for Treating Atherosclerosis-Related Diseases

Abstract

Atherosclerosis-related diseases are the leading cause of morbidity or mortality in the world. They result in serious outcomes such as sudden cardiac death, unstable angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, or intermittent claudication due to vessel obliteration or plaque rupture with subsequent thrombosis. There are some limitations with standard treatments such as antiplatelet drugs, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-blockers, coronary artery bypass surgery, and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Therefore, complementary and alternative medicine is necessary for medication. Traditional Chinese medicine is the main complementary therapy used in the Chinese community. This article aims to explore complementary therapy with traditional Chinese medication for atherosclerosis-related diseases. There is some scientific evidence to support that traditional Chinese medicine could treat atherosclerosis and its associated conditions. Acupuncture through needling on ST36, ST40, PC6, or BL15 could alleviate atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular diseases. Tai chi and meditation have beneficial effects for mental and physical health. In addition, extracts or compounds of single Chinese herbs such as Salvia miltiorrhiza, Panax notoginseng, Ginkgo biloba, Curcuma longa, Crataegus pinnatifida, Paeonia lactiflora, Prunella vulgaris, Polygonum multiflorum, Coptis chinensis, and red yeast rice also could treat atherosclerosis-related diseases through their endothelial protective, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, inhibiting of smooth muscle cells proliferation, and lipid-lowering effects. In accordance with evidence-based medicine, well-designed and conducted clinical studies such as randomized control clinical trials will be necessary in the future.
