56. A PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite film doped with black phosphorus modified with silver nanoparticles for wearable photothermoelectric generators.

Abstract

Photothermoelectric (PTE) materials have gained significant attention as a promising avenue for converting light into electricity. Herein, the PTE properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) are enhanced by introducing black phosphorus nanosheets (BP NSs) modified with silver nanoparticles (Ag@BP). Under 100 mW cm−2 illumination, the resulting PEDOT:PSS/Ag@BP nanocomposite film (P_Ag@BP) exhibits an output voltage of 528.4 μV compared to 300.9 μV for the PEDOT:PSS film. This is attributed to (i) the enhanced photothermal performance of P_Ag@BP, which generates a temperature difference of 18 °C under 100 mW cm−2 illumination compared to 10 °C for the PEDOT:PSS film and (ii) the enhanced thermoelectric performance of P_Ag@BP, with an increased power factor of 107.2 μW m−1 K−2 compared to 32.9 μW m−1 K−2 for the PEDOT:PSS film. Moreover, a photothermoelectric generator (PTEG) consisting of 36 legs of P_Ag@BP exhibits an open circuit voltage of 16.1 mV, a short circuit current of 47.9 μA, and an output power of 192.6 nW under 120 mW cm−2 illumination. Furthermore, when the PTEG is worn on the forearm and exposed to sunlight, it generates an output voltage of 9.2 mV, thus showcasing its potential application in wearable energy harvesting devices. Abstract

A decade of significant research has led to the emergence of photovoltaic solar cells based on perovskites that have achieved an exceptionally high‐power conversion efficiency of 26.08%. A key breakthrough in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) occurred when solid hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) replaced liquid electrolytes in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), because HTMs play a crucial role in improving photovoltaic performance as well as cell stability. This review is mainly focused on the HTMs that are responsible for hole transport and extraction in PSCs, which is one of the crucial components for efficient devices. Here, we have reviewed small molecular as well as polymeric HTMs that have been reported in the last two years and discussed their performance based on the analysis of their molecular architectures. Finally, we include a perspective on the molecular engineering of new functional HTMs for highly efficient stable PSCs. The properties of ideal hole transporting materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cell should include facile synthesis and purification, good solubility, photochemical and thermal stability, tunable energy levels, and excellent hole mobility.

Abstract

A new series of triphenylamine (TPA)‐functionalized isomeric polythiophenes are developed as hole transporting materials (HTM) for inverted tin‐based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs). Bithiophene (BT) is first functionalized with two TPA (electron donor; D) at 3 and 5 positions to give two structural isomeric compounds (3BT2D and 5BT2D). The functionalized BT2Ds are then coupled with 3,3′‐bis(tetradecylthio)‐2,2′‐bithiophene (SBT‐14)/3,3′‐ditetradecyl‐2,2′‐bithiophene (BT‐14) to produce structural isomeric polythiophenes (1‐4), which are compared to conventional poly[N,N″‐bis(4‐butylphenyl)‐N,N″‐bis(phenyl)‐benzidine] (poly‐TPD) as HTMs for TPSCs. With the appropriate alignment of energy levels with regard to the perovskite layer, the TPA‐functionalized polymers‐based TPSCs exhibit enhanced operational stability and efficiency. Moreover, the long thiotetradecyl chain in SBT‐14 with intramolecular S(alkyl)∙∙∙S(thio) interactions restricts the molecular rotation and has a strong impact on the molecular solubility and wettability of the film during device fabrication. Among all the polymers studied, TPSCs fabricated with 3‐SBT‐BT2D polymer exhibit the highest hole mobility as well as the slowest charge recombination and achieve the highest power conversion efficiency of 8.6%, with great long‐term stability for the performance retaining ≈90% of its initial values for shelf storage over 4000 h, which is the best efficiency for non‐PEDOT:PSS‐based TPSCs ever reported. 67. Synthesis and Brønsted acid doping of solution processable poly(thienylene vinylene) for thermoelectric application.

Abstract

Doped polythiophene (PT)-based semiconductors are of significant interest in the field of organic electronics, and are designed for novel thermoelectric applications based on their remarkable electrical properties, ease of processing, and tunable molecular structures. In the present study, the effects of the vinyl linkers in the PTs are systematically investigated in order to understand the interdependence of the structural properties, thin film morphologies, and thermoelectric performance. In particular, the soluble poly(thienylene vinylene) (PTV)-based conjugated polymer, poly[3,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)thienylene vinylene] (P3,4EHTV), is synthesized via halogen-free and transition metal-free polymerization, and compared with the often-studied poly[3-(ethylhexyl)thiophene] (P3EHT) analogue. In addition, the thermoelectric properties of these two PT films doped with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (B(C6F5)3, BCF) are characterized. Furthermore, the bipolaron states of the doped P3,4EHTV are retrieved via detailed ultra violet-visible-near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectral analyses. Systematic microstructural characterizations reveal that the introduction of vinyl groups into the conjugated polymer backbone results in good miscibility with the BCF dopant, along with enhanced doping efficiency, thereby providing the appropriate sites for accommodating the dopant without disrupting the original chain packing and charge transport channels. The maximum power factor (PF) is measured as 1.47 μW m−1 K−2 for the BCF-doped P3,4EHTV with a molar ratio of 20%, due to the high electrical conductivity (σ) of 0.34 S cm−1, which is ten-fold higher than that of the P3EHT (0.17 μW m−1 K−2). The present study therefore provides a suitable methodology for the realization of doped polymers with good host-dopant miscibility, compatible morphologies, and undisrupted microstructural packing in order to favor an increased power factor by introducing vinylene linkers into the main chains of PTs.
