A regional climate model simulation of the period of 1979–88 over the contiguous United States, driven by lateral boundary conditions from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis, was analyzed to assess the ability of the model to simulate heavy precipitation events and seasonal precipitation anomalies. Heavy events were defined by precipitation totals that exceed the threshold value for a specified return period and duration. The model magnitudes of the thresholds for 1-day heavy precipitation events were in good agreement with observed thresholds for much of the central United States. Model thresholds were greater than observed for the eastern and intermountain western portions of the region and were smaller than observed for the lower Mississippi River basin. For 7-day events, model thresholds were in good agreement with observed thresholds for the eastern United States and Great Plains, were less than observed for the most of the Mississippi River valley, and were greater than observed for the intermountain western region. The interannual variability in frequency of heavy events in the model simulation exhibited similar behavior to that of the observed variability in the South, Southwest, West, and North-Central study regions. The agreement was poorer for the Midwest and Northeast, although the magnitude of variability was similar for both model and observations. There was good agreement between the model and observational data in the seasonal distribution of extreme events for the West and North-Central study regions; in the Southwest, Midwest, and Northeast, there were general similarities but some differences in the details of the distributions. This study investigates the role of convection representation across the gray zone in the multigrid nesting Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model based on two extreme precipitation events in Shanghai during the warm season. The precipitation forecast sensitivity and physical processes are examined using three convective treatments: (1) the traditional Kain-Fritsch (KF), (2) scale-aware Grell-Freitas (GF) cumulus parameterization, and (3) explicit convection (EC) solution and different nesting configurations consisting of grid spacings of 27, 15, 9, 5, 3, and 1 km using single, double, and triple nestings. At coarser grids (> 10 km), GF produces wet biases with delayed rainfall peaks, while KF produces dry biases with largely underestimated rainfall peaks. At a 9-km grid spacing, these biases were largely reduced, and using cumulus parameterizations (CUPs) shows specific advantages over the EC in the diurnal variation in extreme precipitation. GF performs better in simulating primary rainfall peak intensity, but KF performs better in simulating diurnal timing, albeit with underestimated intensity. The utilization of CUPs is beneficial at the 5-km grid in simulating both extreme intensity and diurnal variations, but it shows mixed effects at 3 km. When the 1-km grid with explicit convection was nested directly into their outermost 15-km or 9-km grids using KF CUP, avoiding treatment in the gray zone (5 km or 3 km), the primary rainfall peak at noon was best reproduced, but a secondary peak with a weak forcing was not detected. Sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) prediction, especially the prediction of extreme hydroclimate events such as droughts and floods, is not only scientifically challenging but has substantial societal impacts. Motivated by preliminary studies, the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX)/Global Atmospheric System Study (GASS) has launched a new initiative called Impact of initialized Land Surface temperature and Snowpack on Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction (LS4P), as the first international grass-root effort to introduce spring land surface temperature (LST)/subsurface temperature (SUBT) anomalies over high mountain areas as a crucial factor that can lead to significant improvement in precipitation prediction through the remote effects of land/atmosphere interactions. LS4P focuses on process understanding and predictability, hence it is different from, and complements, other international projects that focus on the operational S2S prediction. More than forty groups worldwide have participated in this effort, including 21 Earth System Models, 9 regional climate models, and 7 data groups. This paper overviews the history and objectives of LS4P, provides the first phase experimental protocol (LS4P-I) which focuses on the remote effect of the Tibetan Plateau, discusses the LST/SUBT initialization, and presents the preliminary results. Multi-model ensemble experiments and analyses of observational data have revealed that the hydroclimatic effect of the spring LST in the Tibetan Plateau is not limited to the Yangtze River basin but may have a significant large-scale impact on summer precipitation and its S2S prediction. LS4P models are unable to preserve the initialized LST anomalies in producing the observed anomalies largely for two main reasons: i) inadequacies in the land models arising from total soil depths which are too shallow and the use of simplified parameterizations which both tend to limit the soil memory; and ii) reanalysis data, that are used for initial conditions, have large discrepancies from the observed mean state and anomalies of LST over the Tibetan Plateau. A regional Climate‐Weather Research and Forecasting (CWRF) model with a 30‐km horizontal resolution was applied to simulate the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and climate in China from 1980 to 2016. As compared with observations and reanalysis data, the model can reasonably reproduce the spatial distributions of the climatological mean atmospheric circulation and water vapour transport in East Asia, as well as the seasonal advance and retreat of EASM and rain bands. The correlation coefficient between the EASM circulation index in the simulation and reanalysis is.97. The model can well represent the geographic distributions of summer mean temperature and precipitation over most of China. However, model biases still exist, in particular the skill in the Yangtze–Huaihe River basin is relatively low. The simulated climatological mean temperature and precipitation deviations from observations may be related to the model's systematic circulation biases, with a thicker lower troposphere (i.e., higher temperature between 500 and 1,000 hPa) over most of China (except for the south and southwest) and a thinner one over the coastal oceans in summertime. Compared with the reanalysis, the model overestimates the land‐ocean thermal contrast, which causes the South Asian High shifted to the north and east, as well as the subtropical high and tropical convective activity located further north and persisted longer. Consequently, more water vapour transports northward, leading to more precipitation over North China–Northeast China and less precipitation over the Yangtze and Huaihe River basin. Therefore, the enhanced land‐ocean thermal contrast may be a major factor for the stronger EASM in the model, and corresponding precipitation and temperature biases in China. High‐resolution modeling became popular in recent years due to the availability of multisource observations, advances in understanding fine‐scale processes, and improvements in computing facilities. However, modeling of hydrological changes over mountainous regions is still a great challenge due to the sensitivity of highland water cycle to global warming, tightly coupled hydrothermal processes, and limited observations. Here we show a successful high‐resolution (3 km) land surface modeling over the Sanjiangyuan region located in the eastern Tibetan plateau, which is the headwater of three major Asian rivers. By developing a new version of a Conjunctive Surface‐Subsurface Process model named as CSSPv2, we increased Nash‐Sutcliffe efficiency by 62–130% for streamflow simulations due to the introduction of a storage‐based runoff generation scheme, reduced errors by up to 31% for soil moisture modeling after considering the effect of soil organic matter on porosity and hydraulic conductivity. Compared with ERA‐Interim and Global Land Data Assimilation System version 1.0 reanalysis products, CSSPv2 reduced errors by up to 30%, 69%, 92%, and 40% for soil moisture, soil temperature, evapotranspiration, and terrestrial water storage change, respectively, as evaluated against in situ and satellite observations. Moreover, CSSPv2 well captured the elevation‐dependent ground temperature warming trends and the decreased frozen dates during 1979–2014, and significant increasing trends (p < 0.05) in evapotranspiration and terrestrial water storage during 1982–2011 and 2003–2014 respectively, while ERA‐Interim and Global Land Data Assimilation System version 1.0 showed no trends or even negative trends. This study implies the necessity of developing high‐resolution land surface models in realistically representing hydrological changes over highland areas that are sentinels to climate change. The ability of climate models to capture extreme precipitation events is crucially important, but most of the existing models contain significant biases for the simulation of extreme precipitation. To understand the causes of these biases, we used five different cumulus parameterization schemes in the regional Climate–Weather Research and Forecasting (CWRF) model to investigate its performance and biases in the simulation of extreme precipitation events in China. In general, the ensemble cumulus parameterization (ECP) scheme was the most skillful in reproducing the spatial distribution of the 95th percentile daily precipitation (P95) and the other four schemes either overestimated (the Kain-Fritsch Eta and Tiedtke schemes) or underestimated (the Betts-Miller-Janjic and New Simplified Arakawa-Schubert schemes) P95. Compared with the observational data, ECP scheme significantly improved the simulation of extreme precipitation in China and had the highest correlation and the smallest root-mean-square error in most areas and seasons. To clarify the underlying physical processes of P95 simulation biases, we established a regression model of extreme precipitation based on ECP scheme. This showed that P95 in North China is mainly affected by moisture convergence, planetary boundary layer height and lifting condensation level (relative importance 18–32%). In Central China, the vertical upward motion of water vapor, sensible heat flux and planetary boundary layer height (relative importance 18–30%) are main factors associated with P95. In South China, the vertical upward motion and horizontal transport of water vapor are predominant (relative importance 26–37%). In addition, the net surface energy, surface and atmospheric radiation flux, total precipitable water, convective available potential energy and cloud water path also have a high correlation with P95 (the second most important factor; relative importance 14–31%). The influence of each factor on the simulation of P95 is different when using different cumulus parameterization schemes and the interaction among the different factors determines the ability of CWRF model to simulate extreme precipitation. • A unified agricultural modeling framework is implemented in DLEM v4.0. • Simulated results agree well with site-scale LAI, biomass and yield measurements. • Regional simulations can well reproduce spatial-temporal patterns of crop production. • DLEM v4.0 can be used to support agricultural climate adaptation and mitigation. Agricultural decision-making by different interest groups (e.g., farmers, development agents and policy makers) usually takes place on different scales (e.g., plot, landscape and country). Currently, tools to assist decision-making are either dedicated to small-scale management guidance or large-scale assessment, which ignore the cross-scale linkages and interactions and thus may not provide robust and consistent guidance and assessment. Here, we developed an advanced agricultural modeling framework by integrating the strengths of conventional crop models in representing crop growth processes and management practices into a terrestrial biosphere model (TBM), the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model (DLEM), to meet the cross-scale application needs (e.g., adaptation and mitigation). Specifically, dynamic crop growth processes, including crop-specific phenological development, carbon allocation, yield formation, biological nitrogen fixation processes, and management practices such as tillage, cover cropping and genetic improvements, were explicitly represented in DLEM. The new model was evaluated against site-scale observations and the results showed that the model performed generally well, with an average normalized root mean square error of 19.91% for leaf area index and 17.46% for aboveground biomass at the seasonal scale and 14.42% for annual yield. Then the model was applied to simulate corn, soybean, and winter wheat productions in the conterminous United States from 1960 to 2018. The spatial patterns of simulated crop productions were consistent with ground survey data. Our model also captured both the long-term trends and interannual variations of the total national productions of the three crops. This study demonstrates the significance of fusing conventional crop modeling techniques into TBMs to establish a unified modeling framework, which holds the potential to address climate impacts, adaptation and mitigation across varied spatiotemporal scales. The weak and sustained tropical cyclone (TC) Rumbia (2018) and its associated heavy precipitation after landfall are simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting model using three microphysics parameterizations (MP) and two planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. Key factors regulating the heavy rainfall distribution of landed TC at three stages (landfall, inland slow-moving and recurving stage) and their sensitivities to multi-physics parameterizations are examined. Results show that heavy rainfall distribution is largely regulated by the intensity of TC itself at landfall, but more affected by environmental factors at the two inland stages, including the environmental vertical wind shear, the associated upper-level wind divergence and low-level moisture convergence. Different MP and PBL schemes mainly affect the simulation of TC thermodynamic structure and key environmental factors, leading to their different forecast skills at three stages. Specifically, the Yonsei University (YSU) PBL scheme systematically outperforms the Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino (MYNN) scheme in simulating stronger TC and heavy rainfall intensity. With the advantageous YSU PBL scheme, the Ferrier MP scheme only shows a slight advantage in simulating the intensity of TC and heavy rainfall at landfall. However, the WRF single-moment 6-class (WSM6) and Thompson scheme produce more graupel or snow, and better simulate the key environmental factors, showing their respective advantages in simulating the heavy rainfall structure and location at the two inland stages. This implies that the use of nonlocal YSU PBL scheme and the MP schemes with sophisticated ice processes shows superiority in simulating the postlandfall heavy rainfall induced by weak TCs. • Postlandfall rainfall of weak TC is highly affected by environmental factors. • Ice species and radial distribution of diabatic heating affect TC structures and rainfall. • The MYNN PBL scheme underestimates TC intensity and heavy rainfall compared to YSU. Background: Future climate change may cause air quality degradation via climate-induced changes in meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and emissions into the air. Few studies have explicitly modeled the potential relationships between climate change, air quality, and human health, and fewer still have investigated the sensitivity of estimates to the underlying modeling choices. Objectives: Our goal was to assess the sensitivity of estimated ozone-related human health impacts of climate change to key modeling choices. Methods: Our analysis included seven modeling systems in which a climate change model is linked to an air quality model, five population projections, and multiple concentration-response functions. Using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP), we estimated future ozone (O3)-related health effects in the United States attributable to simulated climate change between the years 2000 and approximately 2050, given each combination of modeling choices. Health effects and concentration-response functions were chosen to match those used in the U.S. EPA's 2008 Regulatory Impact Analysis of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for O3. Results: Different combinations of methodological choices produced a range of estimates of national O3-related mortality from roughly 600 deaths avoided as a result of climate change to 2,500 deaths attributable to climate change (although the large majority produced increases in mortality). The choice of the climate change and the air quality model reflected the greatest source of uncertainty, with the other modeling choices having lesser but still substantial effects. Conclusions: Our results highlight the need to use an ensemble approach, instead of relying on any one set of modeling choices, to assess the potential risks associated with O3-related human health effects resulting from climate change. Future projections of near-surface ozone concentrations depend on the climate/emissions scenario used to drive future simulations, the direct effects of the changing climate on the atmosphere, and the indirect effects of changing temperatures and CO2 levels on biogenic ozone precursor emissions. The authors investigate the influence of these factors on potential future changes in summertime daily 8-h maximum ozone over the United States and China by comparing Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, version 2.4, (MOZART-2.4) simulations for the period 1996–2000 with 2095–99, using climate projections from NCAR–Department of Energy Parallel Climate Model simulations driven by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios A1fi (higher) and B1 (lower) emission scenarios, with corresponding changes in biogenic emissions. The effect of projected climate changes alone on surface ozone is generally less than 3 ppb over most regions. Regional ozone increases and decreases are driven mainly by local warming and marine air dilution enhancement, respectively. Changes are approximately the same magnitude under both scenarios, although spatial patterns of responses differ. Projected increases in isoprene emissions (32%–94% over both countries), however, result in significantly greater changes in surface ozone. Increases of 1–15 ppb are found under A1fi and of 0–7 ppb are found under B1. These increases not only raise the frequency of “high ozone days,” but are also projected to occur nearly uniformly across the distribution of daily ozone maxima. Thus, projected future ozone changes appear to be more sensitive to changes in biogenic emissions than to direct climate changes, and the spatial patterns and magnitude of future ozone changes depend strongly on the future emissions scenarios used. A regional modeling system that integrates the state-of-the-art emissions processing (SMOKE), climate (CWRF), and air quality (CMAQ) models has been combined with satellite measurements of fire activities to assess the impact of fire emissions on the contiguous United States (CONUS) air quality during 1997–2016. The system realistically reproduced the spatiotemporal distributions of the observed meteorology and surface air quality, with a slight overestimate of surface ozone (O3) by ~4% and underestimate of surface PM2.5 by ~10%. The system simulation showed that the fire impacts on primary pollutants such as CO were generally confined to the fire source areas but its effects on secondary pollutants like O3 spread more broadly. The fire contribution to air quality varied greatly during 1997-2016 and occasionally accounted for more than 100 ppbv of monthly mean surface CO and over 20 µg m−3 of monthly mean PM2.5 in the Northwest U.S. and Northern California, two regions susceptible to frequent fires. Fire emissions also had implications on air quality compliance.
