Oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) from oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important contributors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Recent field studies showed that anthropogenic precursors significantly contributed to OOMs and subsequent SOA formation in urban areas. We conducted collocated OOM measurements with nitrate-ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry and SOA molecular tracer measurements with thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in Shanghai. Using the newly developed OOM-based method, we found that OOMs derived from aromatic VOCs (aromatic OOMs) dominated the local SOA production with a contribution of 52%. The traditional SOA tracer-based method estimated a consistent fraction of 49% from monoaromatics and polyaromatics (e.g., naphthalene and methylnaphthalene). We further categorized the aromatic OOMs into heavy (carbon number: nC > 9) and light (nC = 6-9) ones primarily based on the ring number. Surprisingly, the contribution of heavy aromatic OOMs to SOA formation (25%) was more than twice of the naphthalene-derived SOA from the tracer-based method (10%). The gap could be explained by the fact that the OOM-based method also counted the contributions from other polyaromatic VOCs that are beyond methyl-/naphthalene. The high degrees of oxygenation caused by multistep oxidation and the higher carbon number (nC > 9) in heavy aromatic OOMs lead to their lower volatility and higher contributions to SOA. Our study provides previously unavailable linkage between the aromatic SOA with its precursors via simultaneous measurements of OOMs and molecular tracers, revealing the overlooked contribution from heavy aromatic VOCs to SOA formation.

Oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) forms oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs), which contribute to secondary pollution. Herein, we present measurement results of OOMs using chemical ionization mass spectrometry with nitrate as the reagent ion in Shanghai. Compared to those in forests and laboratory studies, OOMs detected at this urban site were of relatively lower degree of oxygenation. This was attributed to the high NOx concentrations (similar to 44 ppb), which overall showed a suppression on the propagation reactions. As another result, a large fraction of nitrogenous OOMs (75%) was observed, and this fraction further increased to 84% under a high NO/VOC ratio. By applying a novel framework on OOM categorization and supported by VOC measure-ments, 50 and 32% OOMs were attributed to aromatic and aliphatic precursors, respectively. Furthermore, aromatic OOMs are more oxygenated (effective oxygen number, nOeff = 4-6) than aliphatic ones (nOeff = 3-4), which can be partly explained by the difference in initiation mechanisms and points to possible discrimination in termination reactions. This study highlights the roles of NOx in OOM formation in urban areas, as well as the formation of nitrogenous products that might show discrimination between aromatic and aliphatic VOCs.

Brown carbon (BrC) absorbs radiation in the near-UV and visible ranges, affecting atmospheric photochemistry and radiative forcing. Our understanding on the photochemical transformation of BrC is still limited, especially when mixed with the abundant and photochemically labile inorganic salt, nitrate. Herein, we investigate the photochemical reactions of four BrC chromophores, including two methoxyphenols and two nitrophenols. Experiments were conducted in the absence and presence of different concentrations of H2O2and nitrate with lights of 254 and 313 nm. The results show that the pseudo-first-order decay rate constants (k) of these four BrC compounds at 313 nm illumination were approximately 10 times lower than those at 254 nm, demonstrating longer lifetimes of these BrC chromophores under tropospherically relevant irradiation. Photo-enhancement in the visible range was observed in most experiments, with those under 313 nm illumination lasting longer, indicating the prolonged effects of nascent and transformed BrC chromophores on radiative forcing. Methoxyphenols had higher averaged k values than nitrophenols during direct photolysis with 254 or 313 nm lights, but the k values for nitrophenols under high-nitrate (or high-H2O2) conditions approached those of methoxyphenols. The photo-enhancement in the visible range for methoxyphenols in the presence of nitrate was substantially contributed by nitro products, while that for nitrophenols was mainly contributed by hydroxylated and/or dimerized products. Our results reveal the similarity and difference between the photolysis of methoxyphenols and nitrophenols, which may help better understand the aging of different types of BrC for better model representation of their effects on radiative forcing. © 2022 American Chemical Society. High particulate matter (PM) pollution episodes still occur occasionally in urban China, despite of improvements in recent years. Investigating the influencing factors of high-PM episodes is beneficial in the formulation of effective control measures. We herein present the effects of weather condition, emission source, and chemical conversion on the occurrence of high-PM episodes in urban Shanghai using multiple online measurements. Three high-PM episodes, i.e., locally-accumulated, regionally-transported, and dust-affected ones, as well as a clean period were selected. Stagnant air with temperature inversion was found in both locally-accumulated and regionally-transported high-PM episodes, but differences in PM evolution were observed. In the more complicated dust-affected episode, the weather condition interacted with the emission/transport sources and chemical conversion, resulting in consecutive stages with different PM characteristics. Specifically, there were (1) stronger local accumulation in the pre-dust period, (2) dust-laden air with aged organic aerosol (OA) upon dust arrival, (3) pollutants being swept into the ocean, and (4) back to the city with aged OA. Our results suggest that (a) local emissions could be rapidly oxidized in some episodes but not all, (b) aged OA from long-range transport (aged in space) had a similar degree of oxygenation compared to the prolonged local oxidation (aged in time), and (c) OA aged over land and over the ocean were similar in chemical characteristics. The findings help better understand the causes and evolution of high-PM episodes, which are manifested by the interplays among meteorology, source, and chemistry, providing a scientific basis for control measures. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.
