60. The abundance and hydrogen isotopic composition of water in SNC meteorites : implications for water on Mars

The water in the current martian atmosphere contains [...] 5 times more deuterium (D) than water on Earth (corresponding to a [...] value of [...] +4000) resulting from preferential loss of hydrogen relative to deuterium from the martian atmosphere. This thesis places constraints on the D/H of other martian water reservoirs by measuring the D/H of water in hydrous phases within the SNC meteorites, thought to be samples of martian igneous rocks. Results from vacuum extractions of volatiles from bulk SNC samples by stepwise heating show the water yields to decrease and [...] values to increase to well above terrestrial values with increasing temperature, indicative of mixing between terrestrial water (contamination) released at low temperatures and martian water released at high temperatures. The high temperature [...] values reach [...] +2000 for Shergotty, the most Denriched sample. However, even the highest [...] values measured may represent lower limits on the true values due to partial exchange with lighter terrestrial water. D/H and water contents of individual amphibole, biotite and apatite grains in several SNC meteorites were measured using an ion microprobe. The amphiboles contain an order of magnitude less water than previously assumed, suggesting that SNC parent magmas may have been less hydrous than previously proposed. The [...] values of the phases range from [...]. The variability and D-enriched nature of these values imply that the primary igneous phases have not retained a martian magmatic water signature. Rather, the high and variable D/H of the water in these phases, like that released at high temperatures from bulk SNC samples, is concluded to result from the interaction of the samples with D-enriched martian crustal fluids after crystallization, probably in an environment similar to terrestrial magmatic hydrothermal systems. The data presented in this thesis represent the first direct evidence for ubiquitous crustal water-igneous rock interaction on another planet. Moreover, the results imply that a large amount of water must have been lost from the martian system since water in the martian crust, in addition to the atmosphere, appears to reflect D-enrichment processes.

61. A geologic evaluation of thermal properties for the Elysium and Aeolis quadrangles of Mars

Abstract

The results of an analysis of high-resolution thermal inertia data (obtained with the IR Thermal Mapper) for the Elysium and Aeolis quadrangles of Mars are presented. The results indicate that aeolian features, both with dark and light albedos relative to their surroundings, have thermal inertias higher than that of the surrounding terrains. On the other hand, terrains with distinctive surface relief do not have distinguishable thermal properties, even when these terrains can be spatially resolved from surrounding units. Thermal inertias for individual geologic units within the two quadrangles appear to be more strongly controlled by the location of the terrain in either the northern plains or the southern highlands than by properties intrinsic to the unit. The similarity of regional thermal properties observed at both high and low spatial resolutions indicates a regional homogeneity of much of the Martian surface at scales larger than 5 km.

Abstract

Excesses of sulfur-36 in sodalite, a chlorine-rich mineral, in a calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusion from the Ningqiang carbonaceous chondrite linearly correlate with chorine/sulfur ratios, providing direct evidence for the presence of short-lived chlorine-36 (with a half-life of 0.3 million years) in the early solar system. The best inferred (36C1/35Cl)0 ratios of the sodalite are ≈5 × 10-6. Different from other short-lived radionuclides, chlorine-36 was introduced into the inclusion by solid-gas reaction during secondary alteration. The alteration reaction probably took place at least 1.5 million years after the first formation of the inclusion, based on the correlated study of the 26A1-26Mg systems of the relict primary minerals and the alteration assemblages, from which we inferred an initial ratio of (36Cl/35C1)o ⩾ 1.6 × 10-4 at the time when calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions formed. This discovery supports a supernova origin of short-lived nuclides [Cameron, A. G. W., Hoeflich, P., Myers, P. C. & Clayton, D. D. (1995) Astrophys. J. 447, L53; Wasserburg, G. 75. 36Cl, 26Al, and O isotopes in an Allende type B2 CAI: Implications for multiple secondary alteration events in the early solar system

Abstract

Abstract—We measured 36Cl‐36S and 26Al‐26Mg systematics and O isotopes of secondary phases in a moderately altered type B2 CAI (CAI#2) from the Allende CV3 chondrite. CAI#2 has two distinct alteration domains: the anorthite‐grossular (An‐Grs) domain that mostly consists of anorthite and grossular, and the Na‐rich domain that mostly consists of sodalite, anorthite, and Fe‐bearing phases. Large 36S excesses (up to ∼400‰) corresponding to an initial 36Cl/35Cl ratio of (1.4 ± 0.3) × 10−6were observed in sodalite of the Na‐rich domain, but no resolvable 26Mg excesses were observed in anorthite and sodalite of the Na‐rich domain (the initial 26Al/27Al ratio < 4.4 × 10−7). If we assume that the 36Cl‐36S and the 26Al‐26Mg systematics were closed simultaneously, the 36Cl/35Cl ratio would have to be on the order of ∼10−2when CAIs were formed. In contrast to sodalite in Na‐rich domain, significant 26Mg excesses (up to ∼35‰) corresponding to an initial 26Al/27Al ratio of (1.2 ± 0.2) × 10−5were identified in anorthite of the An‐Grs domain. The 26Al‐26Mg systematics of secondary phases in CAI#2 suggest that CAIs experienced multiple alteration events. Some of the alteration processes occurred while 36Cl (half‐life is 0.3 Myr) and 26Al (half‐life is 0.72 Myr) were still alive, whereas others took place much later. Assuming that 26Al was homogeneously distributed in the solar nebula, our study implies that alteration of CAIs occurred as early as within 1.5 Myr of CAI formation and as late as 5.7 Myr after.

Among eleven aluminum‐rich chondrules and two plagioclase fragments measured for 26Al‐26Mg systematics, only one aluminum‐rich chondrule contains excess 26Mg from the in situ decay of 26Al; the inferred initial ratio (26Al/27Al)o= (6.8 ± 2.4) × 10−6is consistent with ratios observed in chondrules from carbonaceous chondrites and unequilibrated ordinary chondrites.

Abstract

The Stardust spacecraft collected thousands of particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 and returned them to Earth for laboratory study. The preliminary examination of these samples shows that the nonvolatile portion of the comet is an unequilibrated assortment of materials that have both presolar and solar system origin. The comet contains an abundance of silicate grains that are much larger than predictions of interstellar grain models, and many of these are high-temperature minerals that appear to have formed in the inner regions of the solar nebula. Their presence in a comet proves that the formation of the solar system included mixing on the grandest scales.

Abstract

Carbonaceous chondrite condensate olivine grains from two distinct petrographic settings, calcium-aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) accretionary rims and amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs), are oxygen-16 ([sup 16]O) enriched at the level previously observed inside CAIs. This requires that the gas in the nebular region where these grains condensed was [sup 16]O-rich. This contrasts with an [sup 16]O-poor gas present during the formation of chondrules, suggesting that CAIs and AOAs formed in a spatially restricted region of the solar nebula containing [sup 16]O-rich gas. The [sup 16]O-rich gas composition may have resulted either from mass-independent isotopic chemistry or from evaporation of regions with enhanced dust/gas ratios, possibly in an X-wind environment near the young Sun. Abstract

Stable isotope ratios of H, C, and 0 are powerful indicators of a wide variety of planetary geophysical processes, and for Mars they reveal the record of loss of its atmosphere and subsequent interactions with its surface such as carbonate formation. We report in situ measurements of the isotopic ratios of D/H and 180/160 in water and 13C/12C, 180/160,170/160, and 13C180/12C160 in carbon dioxide, made in the martian atmosphere at Gale Crater from the Curiosity rover using the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)'s tunable laser spectrometer (TLS). Comparison between our measurements in the modern atmosphere and those of martian meteorites such as ALH 84001 implies that the martian reservoirs of C02 and H20 were largely established ~4 billion years ago, but that atmospheric loss or surface interaction may be still ongoing.
