53. Exploring the Nature of the 2016 ��-ray Emission in the Blazar 1749+096

Abstract

Recent Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) light curves indicate an active $��$-ray state spanning about five months from 2016 June to 2016 October in the BL Lac object 1749+096 (OT 081). During this period, we find two notable $��$-ray events: an exceptionally strong outburst followed by a significant enhancement (local peak). In this study, we analyze multi-waveband light curves (radio, optical, X-ray, and $��$-ray) plus very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data to investigate the nature of the $��$-ray events. The $��$-ray outburst coincides with flux maxima at longer wavelengths. We find a spectral hardening of the $��$-ray photon index during the $��$-ray outburst. The photon index shows a transition from a softer-when-brighter to a harder-when-brighter trend at around 1.8 $\times$ $10^{-7}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We see indication that both the $��$-ray outburst and the subsequent enhancement precede the propagation of a polarized knot in a region near the VLBI core. The highest polarized intensity, 230\,mJy, and an electric vector position angle rotation, by $\sim$32$^{\circ}$, are detected about 12 days after the $��$-ray outburst. We conclude that both $��$-ray events are caused by the propagation of a disturbance in the mm-wave core., 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Cytosolic phospholipase A2α (cPLA2α) catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at the sn-2 position to liberate fatty acids. Although cPLA2α has been implicated in various cellular processes, the detailed mechanism of its expression remains to be elucidated. Here we report that phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) up-regulates cPLA2α in A549 airway epithelium cells, and that this effect is sensitive to rottlerin, a potent inhibitor of protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ). Consistent with this observation, a dominant negative mutant of PKCδ reduced cPLA2α induction in response to PMA. Up-regulation of cPLA2α by PMA was also inhibited by PDTC, an inhibitor of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), and degradation of IκB and subsequent activation of NF-κB occurred in response to PMA treatment. These findings indicate that PMA induces expression of cPLA2α at the transcriptional level via an NF-κB-dependent mechanism. In addition, activation of the NF-κB promoter by PMA was diminished by pretreatment with DPI, a flavoenzyme inhibitor as well as by rottlerin, suggesting a role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as PKCδ. Consistent with this, PMA stimulated the production of ROS and this was blocked by inhibiting PKCδ. Our results suggest that PKCδ and ROS lie upstream of NF-κB, and we conclude that a PKCδ-ROS-NF-κB cascade plays a pivotal role in cPLA2α induction by PMA. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

While repetition was once thought to be “just a marker of a ‘disfluent’ or ‘sloppy’ speaker,” it has been increasingly recognized as a “human social activity, clearly part of our everyday conduct or behavior” (Schegloff 1987). The present study, using video recorded natural conversation data, aims to describe ways in which native speakers of Mandarin Chinese employ repetition of the first person pronoun wo for interactional moves. Repetition of wo is analyzed in conjunction with other interactive strategies, such as syntactic features, phonological features, pragmatic features, gesture, self-grooming, and gaze, as a way to organize and negotiate stances toward the proposition expressed and the co-participants and at the same time to enable intersubjectivity. By showing that within the speech of a single speaker pronominal repetition acts as a stance marker, this paper provides a new perspective on Chinese pronominal use and enriches our understanding of the functions of “disfluent” language in general.
