This survey deals with the Rosellinia taxa collected in the French West Indies in the course of an ongoing inventorial work on the mycobiota of these islands initiated in 2003. Based on the evaluation and comparison of their morphological characters, sixteen species are described, illustrated and discussed, including seven new taxa viz.: R. aciculispora, R. asperata var. minor, R. discreta, R. granulosa, R. heliconiae, R. nigropileata and R. truncatispora, and two taxonomically unsettled species provisionally referred to R. acutispora and R. perusensis. Other known recorded taxa include R. bunodes, R. lechatii, R. leopoldensis, R. longispora, R. parva, R. pepo and R. winckleriana. A seventeenth species, R. arcuata, known from Guadeloupe, was not collected during this survey and therefore is cited but not illustrated. A dichotomous identification key and a synoptical table of stromata are provided. Living cultures and ITS sequences of R. cf. acutispora, R. asperata var. minor and R. truncatispora were deposited at Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (formerly CBS) and GenBank respectively. The phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences supports the placement of these species in Rosellinia and their affinities with morphologically similar species

A new species of Ijuhya is described and illustrated based on material collected in the Canary Island of Tenerife (Spain). The new species described herein was sequenced. Based on ascomata not changing colour in 3% KOH or lactic acid and phylogenetic analysis, this species is placed in the Bionectriaceae as defined by Rossman et al. (1999). Its placement in Ijuhya is based on morphological and phylogenetic comparison with the most similar genera including Lasionectria (Sacc.) Cooke and Lasionectriella Lechat & J. Fourn. Ijuhya aurantiaca differs from other Ijuhya species by bright orange ascomata and 3–5-septate, conspicuously striate ascospores. An updated dichotomous key to Ijuhya is presented

A detailed description of Striatibotrys asturiensis sp. nov. is presented, based on a collection on dead stems of Veratrum album (Melanthiaceae) in Asturias (Spain). The fungus was cultured and sequenced; no asexual morph was obtained in culture but molecular data place this species in Striatibotrys Lombard & Crous (Lombard et al., 2016). This species resembles S. oleronensis (Lechat, Hairaud & Lesage-Meessen) Lombard & Crous but differs from it in having glabrous ascomata and larger ascospores surrounded by a wide gelatinous sheath

This survey deals with the Biscogniauxia taxa collected in the French West Indies in the course of an ongoing inventorial work on the mycobiota of these islands initiated in 2003. Based on the evaluation and comparison of their morphological characters, fourteen taxa are described, illustrated and discussed, including four new taxa, viz.: B. breviappendiculata, B. martinicensis, B. nigropapillata and B. sinuosa var. macrospora and a collection of uncertain taxonomic position tentatively regarded as related to B. uniapiculata. The nine known taxa that we recorded include B. capnodes, B. capnodes var. limoniispora, B. capnodes var. theissenii, B. citriformis, B. citriformis var. macrospora, B. grenadensis, B. philippinensis, B. uniapiculata and B. viscosicentra. Only three of the taxa that we report here were already known from the Caribbean, viz.: B. grenadensis, B. uniapiculata and B. cf. uniapiculata, and all are new to the French West Indies, except the latter which was collected in Guadeloupe. A dichotomous identification key and a synoptical table of ascospores are presented as well

A detailed description of Hydropisphaera heliconiae sp. nov. is presented based on two collections on dead leaves of Heliconia caribea (Heliconiaceae) in Martinique (FWI). The fungus was cultured and sequenced and its placement in the genus Hydropisphaera confirmed by analysis of LSU sequences. This species primarily differs from all known species in having ascomata nearly black when mature and deeply cupulate when dry. The new combination Ijuhya boothii is proposed for a taxon examined during this study that was formerly placed in Hydropisphaera

Hypomyces peltigericola sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on material collected in France on thalli of the lichen Peltigera canina. In culture the ascospores yielded a cladobotryum-like asexual morph that was sequenced. The placement of this new species in the aurofusarin-group of the genus Hypomyces is based on the combination of morphological characters of sexual and asexual morphs as well as the comparison of its ITS rDNA sequence with those of this group available in GenBank

Four new species of Ijuhya are described and illustrated based on material collected in Belgium, metropolitan France and French Guiana. The four new species described herein were sequenced and one of them was successfully cultured. They are placed in the Bionectriaceae based on ascomata not changing colour in 3% KOH or lactic acid, acremonium-like asexual morph and phylogenetic affinities of LSU sequences with five morphologically related genera of the Bionectriaceae. Their placement in Ijuhya is based on morphological and phylogenetic comparison with the most similar genera including Lasionectria and Lasionectriella. A detailed description of Hydropisphaera foliicola sp. nov. is presented, based on a collection on dead leaf of Pouteria pallida (C.F. Gaertn.) Baehni (Sapotaceae) in Martinique (French West Indies). The fungus was cultured and sequenced; no asexual morph was obtained in culture but fertile ascomata occurred after five weeks. This species resembles H. erubescens (Roberge ex Desm.) Rossman & Samuels but differs from it in having significantly smaller ascospores

A new genus, Xanthonectria, is proposed for the enigmatic taxon Nectria pseudopeziza. Xanthonectria is characterized by nonstromatic, soft-textured, superficial, glabrous, pale yellow to bright orange nectria-like ascomata, not changing color in 3% KOH or lactic acid, long fusiform, multiseptate ascospores and an acremonium-like asexual morph. Its placement in the Bionectriaceae and its relationship to other members of this family are based on morphological, cultural and molecular data

Varicosporellopsis aquatilis gen. and sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on two collections on submerged wood in southern France. An acremonium-like asexual morph was obtained in culture and sequenced. The genus is placed in the Nectriaceae based on its asexual morph and phylogenetic comparison of ITS and LSU sequences with 21 genera of Hypocreales including 14 genera in the Nectriaceae and 7 genera in the Bionectriaceae. Varicosporellopsis is primarily characterized by obpyriform, pale orange, non-stromatic ascomata not changing colour in 3% KOH, becoming very pale yellow to nearly hyaline in lactic acid, short-ribbed ascospores, freshwater habitat and an acremonium-like asexual morph

A distinctive aquatic fungus belonging to the Sordariomycetes was recently collected twice on submerged wood in a peat bog and in a small brook in Morvan region (France). Based on its more or less immersed perithecial and ostiolate ascomata, cylindrical unitunicate asci with a massive inamyloid apical apparatus and brown, two-celled fusiform ascospores with small bipolar cap-like appendages, this fungus was identified as Submersisphaeria aquatica K.D. Hyde. This species, so far known only from Australia and USA, is reported from France and Europe for the first time. Herein, we provide a detailed morphological description of this fungus and compare it with material from the USA. The presence of minute germ pores beneath the bipolar appendages of the ascospores is assessed for the first time, in American and European material as well. Repeated attempts to grow the ascospores in culture on artificial media were unsuccessful

A detailed description of Hydropisphaera znieffensis sp. nov. is presented, based on a collection on dead leaf of Cyathea arborea (L.) Sm. in Martinique (French West Indies). The asexual morph has been obtained in culture and sequenced. This species has coarsely verrucose ascospores, an unusual feature in the genus Hydropisphaera

Lasionectriella rubioi gen. and sp. nov. and L. herbicola sp. nov. are described and illustrated based on collections from France and Spain. The asexual morph of L. rubioi was obtained in culture and cultures of both species were sequenced. The genus is placed in the Bionectriaceae based on ascomata not changing colour in 3% KOH or lactic acid, acremonium-like asexual morph and phylogenetic comparison of LSU sequences with species in 13 genera of the Bionectriaceae. Lasionectriella is primarily characterized by subglobose, pale yellow, pale orange to dark brownish orange, non-stromatic ascomata with a conical apex and ascomatal surface covered by thick-walled hyphae proliferating from base and agglutinating to form a fringe around the upper margin of ascomata. It is morphologically and phylogenetically compared with the most similar genera Ijuhya, Lasionectria and Ochronectria

This survey deals with Annulohypoxylon spp. collected in two French Guiana locations during two weeks in June 2012. Two species, A. leptascum var. macrosporum and A. stygium, previously reported, were collected. In addition, we collected A. moriforme s.l., A. purpureopigmentum (first collected in Brazil), and three new species, A. fulvum, A. nouraguense and A. subnitens. All species are described and illustrated; a dichotomous key is provided. In conclusion, some problems in description of morphological features of Annulohypoxylon, especially the ostiolar discs, are discussed

During a field trip to French Guiana in June 2012, a distinctive species of Phylacia was collected. It appeared to differ from all known species by significantly larger and pear-shaped ascospores and thus it is described as the new taxon P. korfii J. Fourn. & Lechat. We also noticed the presence of a germ slit on ascospores and we observed that fragments of the stromatal crust yielded pigments in 10% KOH, two characters so far rarely or not documented in this genus. Similar investigations carried out on three other Phylacia spp. showed that recording these characters is taxonomically relevant and should facilitate a better appraisal of the known species and the segregation of new taxa

Protocreopsis korfii sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on a collection on Heliconia bihai in Martinique. The placement of P. korfii in Protocreopsis is supported by morphological characters and analysis of LSU sequences. This species has smooth ascospores 35–46 × 7–8.5(–9) µm, shorter than the most closely related species, P. fusigera

Stylonectria norvegica sp. nov. is described from three collections on pyrenomycetous hosts on Quercus, Betula and Alnus in Norway. The fusarium-like asexual state was obtained in culture and the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 loci were sequenced. This new species is described and illustrated and its affinities and differences with other species in the genus are discussed

This survey of the genus Hypoxylon in the French West Indies is based on the material collected during an ongoing mycological inventorial project initiated in 2003, including field trips usually carried out annually, between June and November. Previous records of Hypoxylon from these islands found in literature are analyzed and discussed, and only two species are retained as reliably identified in 1996, viz.: H. musceum and H. ochraceum. The thirty-seven additional taxa collected during these field trips bring up to thirty-nine the number of Hypoxylon taxa known from Guadeloupe and Martinique. These thirty-nine taxa are described, illustrated in colour and their taxonomic status is commented. They include seven taxa recently described as new in 2010, 2012 and 2015, viz.: H. cypraeisporum, H. griseobrunneum, H. isabellinum, H. laminosum, H. lateripigmentum, H. pulicicidum and H. sclerophaeum var. parvisporum and six new species described in this article, viz.: H. arawakianum, H. dussii, H. ochraceoglobosum, H. sepiaceum, H. sofaiense and H. subtrugodes. Seventeen known species are recorded for the first time from Guadeloupe or Martinique, viz.: H. aeruginosum, H. brevisporum, H. erythrostroma, H. fendleri, H. haematostroma, H. hypomiltum, H. investiens, H. lenormandii, H. monticulosum, H. munkii, H. pelliculosum, H. rickii, H. rubellum, H. rugulosporum, H. samuelsii, H. subgilvum and H. tortisporum. Finally seven collections that could not be unequivocally equated to known species are given the following provisional names referring to the most resembling known species viz.: H. cf. cinnabarinum sp1, H. cf. cinnabarinum sp2, H. cf. duranii, H. cf. dieckmannii, H. cf. hypomiltum, H. cf. pilgerianum sp1 and H. cf. pilgerianum sp2. A detailed description of Ijuhya fournieri sp. nov. is presented based on two collections on dead palm leaves in French Guiana. The asexual state has been obtained in culture and sequenced. Molecular data indicate that it is an undescribed species of Ijuhya. A key to the species of Ijuhya with fasciculate hairs is provided

In June 2012, a field trip carried out over two weeks in two different localities in French Guiana resulted in a collection of 256 specimens of pyrenomycetes, mostly Xylariaceae. Out of them 42 specimens of Hypoxylon were recorded, several of them could not be equated to known species. Specimens of Hypoxylon collected by C. Lechat during previous collecting trips in French Guiana in 2008 and 2010 are likewise included in this survey. As a result of the thorough morphological study of these specimens 13 taxa are presented herein, including six new species, H. aureolimbatum, H. leprieurianum, H. nudum, H. paracouense, H. rhombisporum and H. verruciperisporium that are described, illustrated and commented upon. H. aureolimbatum strikingly resembles the temperate species H. subticinense but besides its different geographical distribution it deviates in the combination of morphological differences of stromata, asci, ascospores and asexual morph associated on natural substrate; H. leprieurianum is segregated from Hypoxylon spp. with similar external morphology based on small equilateral ascospores with broadly rounded ends, a perispore indehiscent in KOH and a faint short germ slit; H. nudum is unique in having a stroma reduced to a black basal tissue and lacking stromatal pigments; Hypoxylon paracouense resembles H. duranii but deviates by different KOH-extractable pigments and smaller ascospores with a sigmoid germ slit; H. rhombisporum is diagnosed based on frequently rhomboid ascospores with laterally ridged epispore and several further morphological differences from the closely related H. rectangulosporum; H. verruciperisporium is unique in having a verrucose perispore. Four rarely recorded species are likewise described and illustrated: H. aeruginosum, H. musceum and H. trugodes that are recorded from French Guiana for the first time, and H. fusoideosporum that was only known from two collections in French Guiana and Guyana. Finally, two collection deviating respectively from H. cinnabarinum and H. hypomiltum and possibly different are described, for which no formal taxonomic decision can be made until the natural range of variations encountered in these taxa is clearly understood; furthermore, three specimens are tentatively referred to H. dieckmannii, a pantropical taxon that appears to be a complex of closely related species. The holotypes of H. duranii, H. musceum and H. rectangulosporum that were studied for comparison are likewise illustrated. A dichotomous key the Hypoxylon spp. known from French Guiana is provided. In conclusion, the use of new morphological characters to segregate Hypoxylon spp. is suggested and commented

Varicosporella aquatica gen. and sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on six collections on submerged wood in South of France. A fusarium-like asexual morph was obtained in culture and sequenced. The genus is placed in the Nectriaceae based on its asexual morph and phylogenetic comparison of ITS and LSU sequences with species in 22 genera of Hypocreales including 16 genera in the Nectriaceae. It is primarily characterized by obpyriform, greyish yellow to pale orange nonstromatic ascomata, short-ribbed ascospores and freshwater habitat

Three species of Hypoxylon collected in the French West Indies that release violaceous to purple KOH-extractable pigments are described and compared with their known relatives. Two of them exhibit a combination of morphological characters that supports their status of new taxa as H. cypraeisporum and H. sclerophaeum var. parvisporum. The former is diagnosed by black rosellinioid stromata and ascospores with conspicuously pitted epispore and the latter by its ascospores significantly smaller than in the typical variety. Two ancient herbarium specimens of H. sclerophaeum have been studied for comparison and are illustrated. The third species dealt with, occurring on bamboo, appeared conspecific with H. rugulosporum, a species known from Papua New Guinea, based on examination of the isotype and reinterpretation of some of its morphological characters. Hypoxylon rugulosporum is recorded here for the first time from the Neotropics. An updated dichotomous key to the Hypoxylon spp. with purple KOH-extractable pigments is provided

Stylonectria norvegica sp. nov. is described from three collections on pyrenomycetous hosts on Quercus, Betula and Alnus in Norway. During a survey of mycobiota in the island of Mayotte situated in the Comores archipelago, a remarkable Hypoxylon with unusual off-white to pale yellowish stromata was collected by one of us (MP). Besides its striking colour it is characterized by small orbicular effused-pulvinate stromata (< 6 mm diam), with conspicuous perithecial contours, papillate ostioles and subsurface with yellow waxy granules yielding orange brown pigments in 10% KOH. Upon microscopical observation, its asci appear devoid of an apical apparatus, thus not reacting with iodine, and its ascospores have a transversely striated perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH. This combination of characters is compared with the Hypoxylon spp. appearing morphologically the most closely related and this comparative study is summarized in a table. As this Hypoxylon features a set of characters deviating from known species, it is described as new, as H. flavocremeum. A culture derived from single spore isolation was obtained and described. The ex-type culture was deposited at the CBS Fungal Biodiversity Center (CBS, Utrecht, the Netherlands). All attempts to obtain the asexual state on various media remained unsuccessful. The few other species of Hypoxylon collected during this survey are listed and briefly commented upon. The rarely recorded H. lividipigmentum is illustrated in colour

After the first French mycological session dedicated to aquatic Ascomycota, the authors wanted to present, in addition of their inventory, some descriptions of interesting or typical taxa of the aquatic environment or its surroundings

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. Clonostachys saulensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on a collection on bark of dead liana in French Guiana. this species is placed in Clonostachys (= Bionectria) based on its clonostachys-like asexual morph, ascomata not changing colour in 3% Koh or lactic acid and phylogenetic comparison of itS sequences with known species of Clonostachys. Clonostachys saulensis is primarily characterized by nonstromatic,smooth, pale brown, globose ascomata coated with a whitish powdery scurf from base up to half height and turning blackish upon drying. Based on comparison of morphological characteristics of sexualasexual morphs and molecular data with known species, C. saulensis is proposed as a new species. ., Clonostachys saulensis sp. nov. est décrite et illustrée d’après une récolte effectuée sur écorce de liane morte en Guyane française. cette espèce est placée dans le genre Clonostachys (= Bionectria) d’après sa forme asexuée de type clonostachys, les ascomes ne changeant pas de couleur dans Koh à 3% ou dans l’acide lactique et la comparaison phylogénétique des séquences itS avec les espèces connues de Clonostachys. Clonostachys saulensis est principalement caractérisée par des ascomes globuleux, sans stroma, brun pâle, couverts d’une pellicule poudreuse blanchâtre de la base jusqu’à la moitié de la hauteur, devenant noirâtres en séchant. en se fondant sur la comparaison des caractères morphologiques et des données moléculaires avec les espèces connues, C. saulensis est proposée comme une nouvelle espèce.
