Abstract

The present work concerns the investigation of the perceptions of kindergarten and first grade primary school teachers of their cooperation in terms of enhancing the literacy of their students. The data were collected by administering an electronic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to teachers of Greek public schools in the prefectures of Achaia and Ilia. The main findings of this study indicate that in contrast to the existing reality, first grade primary school teachers as well as kindergarten teachers recognize the need to develop cooperation between them, recognizing that this will contribute to the smoother transition of students from kindergarten to primary school. They also seemed to want to create a balanced language curriculum that would ensure continuity in implemented teaching literacy practices between the two specific types of schools. Furthermore, the first grade primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers who participated in the research want to implement a common training framework on issues of modern teaching in order to facilitate the cooperation between them, which according to the teachers is hindered by the factors of co-location of school units and lack of time due to pressure experienced by teachers to cover the "course material" according to the modern curriculum of the language course., Mediterranean Journal of Education, Vol. 1, N. 1 (2021)

57. Family cultural activities and educational expectations of Day High School students

Abstract

This paper, which uses the concepts of ‘cultural capital’ and ‘practice’ from Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, presents the family cultural activities that Day High School students in Greece adopt in their everyday life and which contribute to shaping their cultural capital. Moreover, an attempt is also made to investigate the role played by the family cultural activities that students adopt, in shaping their expectations concerning their educational future. The research sample consists of 1430 2nd grade Day High School students, who attended High School during the school year 2017-2018, and the research data were collected using a questionnaire. The research results showed that the students in the sample tend to accumulate and integrate into the system of their predispositions a smaller or larger volume of cultural capital, which is a function of the range of family cultural activities they adopt in their everyday lives. In addition, the students’ everyday family cultural activities tend to ‘organize’ the system of their expectations, defining their future educational careers, and orienting them to different educational outlets, Este documento, que utiliza los conceptos de "capital cultural" y "práctica" de la teoría de Pierre Bourdieu, presenta las actividades culturales familiares que los estudiantes de Day High School en Grecia adoptan en su vida cotidiana y que contribuyen a dar forma a su capital cultural. Además, también se intenta investigar el papel desempeñado por las actividades culturales familiares que los estudiantes adoptan, para dar forma a sus expectativas con respecto a su futuro educativo. En esta investigación transversal, la muestra consta de 1430 estudiantes de secundaria de segundo grado, que asistieron a la escuela secundaria durante el año escolar 2017-2018, y los datos de la investigación se recopilaron mediante un cuestionario. Los resultados mostraron que los estudiantes en la muestra tienden a acumular e integrar en el sistema de sus predisposiciones un volumen menor o mayor de capital cultural, que es una función del rango de actividades culturales familiares que adoptan en sus vidas. Además, las actividades culturales familiares cotidianas de los estudiantes tienden a "organizar" el sistema de sus expectativas, definiendo sus futuras carreras educativas y orientándolos a diferentes medios educativos.

64. Student Teachers’ Game Preferences, Game Habits, and Attitudes Towards Games as Learning Tools.

Abstract

Our aim in this study is to examine the gaming habits and game preferences of university students / pre-service teachers. Teachers’ confidence to use and attitudes towards technology, and their experience with digital games seem to be some of the most critical factors determining the use of digital games in the classroom. Furthermore, personal game preferences are important factors for motivation and engagement in game play and the educational effectiveness of games. By examining the gaming experience and preferences of future teachers, we can better design relevant courses and curricula for supporting student teachers and prepare them to use game-based learning and teaching in their future classrooms. Data were collected through an online survey. Our sample (N=274) includes students from different universities, different university departments, and different academic years of study. This allows us to gain a more holistic view of the topic, based on the perceptions of student teachers from different disciplines and backgrounds. Trying to address the complexity of game classification for identifying preferences, a typology of games based on two main axes is proposed: a) the format of the game, the mechanics, and gameplay (e.g. simulation, action, strategy, puzzle, role-playing) and b) the content of the game and the narrative context (e.g. story oriented, fantasy world, sports, science fiction). We mapped the participants’ preferences based on this typology. We further collected and analysed data on their game-playing frequency and preferred gaming device. Their intention to use games in their classrooms, and their perceptions on the educational value of digital games were further examined. Findings suggest that perceptions on the learning potential of games are linked to their intention to use them in the classroom; also, players who prefer games such as role-playing, open world and exploration, set in a fantasy or science fiction world, assessed the learning potential of games and their intention to use them in the classroom higher. The findings allows us to gain a better insight on current trends in attitudes, experiences, and preferences of student teachers in various disciplines, as well as to identify possible ways to support them in their studies. Abstract

Learning through the use of mobile or portable devices (Mobile Learning or mlearning), is the type of learning that takes place at any time and geographical location and is supported by a device that simulates computer-like functions. Researches about the use of smartphones and tablets in higher education have studied the effectiveness of mobile devices in learning. Other researches have focused on the percentage of students owning and using smartphones and tablets for academic purposes, as well as on problems or barriers recognized by them in the use of mobile devices, during their studies. Although mobile devices play an active role in both daily life and learning process, research data on higher education in Greece, so far, is limited. Through this research we look forward to enhancing the debate on the use of mobile devices as learning tool and during the educational process in higher education. The present study investigates views of students from the University of Patras on the educational utilization of mobile devices. For this purpose, a questionnaire was created through the GoogleForms online application and was administrated from April to May 2018. This study involved 98 students from various schools, Humanities and Social Sciences (49%), Engineering (19.4%), Economics & Business (15.6%), Natural Sciences (9.2%) and Health Sciences (6.8%). Regarding the use and availability of mobile devices (smartphones/ tablets), we deduced that almost all students possess a smartphone. It is a fact that we have passed from the era of tablets and laptops to the era of smartphones, bearing in mind that the capabilities of the latter are at least similar to those of tablets and many computers. Regarding the applications most frequently used on their smartphone or tablet to support their studies, students stated that they mainly use PDF reader, email, Facebook, learning management systems such as eclass and google. The above applications are used for communication purposes, to exchange academic notes and for course information (syllabus, exam topics, notes). Concerning the problems faced by students in the educational utilization of their mobile devices, the majority of them stated that the most important problem is that in many classes there is no wi-fi coverage and even if wi-fi is provided, the speed is very slow, followed by the lack of suitable applications to support learning and teaching. Most students recognize that mobile devices enhance their flexibility about learning, providing more degrees of freedom to them. They mentioned that mobile devices contribute to the way they learn as well as provide liberty about the place and the time they choose to spend on learning. However, almost half of them admit that using mobile devices could cause problems in the educational process, both for tutors as well as for themselves. The main problem in the use of mobile devices for educational purposes for students are their distraction by aimlessly surfing the internet, and for the university tutors, the fact that some of them are unfamiliar with technology, so that they cannot take advantage of it. Given students' views on how mobile devices contribute to the way they learn, we believe that mobile devices can support distance learning as well. We also consider that mobile applications designers could create environments that mediate the learning process, permitting the mobile usage in class for learning purposes. These environments could restrict the use of various applications (access to specific websites, social media, games, etc.) that seem to distract the student and generally create problems in the educational process. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the motor development level in preschool children through the administration of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 battery. The field research was conducted to schools and one hundred and fifty-six 3 to 6-year-old children participated in the study. The children's performances were assessed by gender, age group and type of motor skill. The statistical analyses computed showed that the state of the total motor quotient of the children was judged to be satisfactory, with slight differentiations per age group, with the older age-groups performing better than the younger in the fine motor quotient. Furthermore, the girls excelled in locomotion, stationary and visual-motor integration skills and the boys in object manipulation skill. The findings highlight the need for assessment batteries in the planning of suitable programmes for the improvement of children's motor skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
