51. Backcalculation of Finite-Element Modeling Based on Field Measurements Results of Excavation in Steel Sheet Pile Walls

Abstract

The study presents a development of a nonlinear finite element calculation technique for the prediction of the stability of the multistaged deep excavation in submerged multilayered soft soil retained by steel sheet pile walls structures performed from Cast3M FE code. Optimization numerical backcalculation results are given for the design and construction of retaining walls with adjustment parameters, horizontal displacements, and earth and hydraulic pressure measurements. The difficulties of modeling 2D sheet pile walls in 2D with irregular shapes were overcome by transforming the geometry and stiffness of these sheet steel sheet pile walls into retaining walls of equivalent bending stiffness on the one hand and regular geometric shapes on the other hand. The results of this approach are satisfactory in view of the horizontal displacement curves obtained on the steel sheet pile walls compared by the measures.

Abstract

For the determination of global stability after long term advanced monitoring, artificial intelligence have been used for the data analysis of water level and displacements of Songloulou earth dam at Cameroon. Measurements of safety and reliability indicators follow changes set by piezometric and pendulums measurements. The results obtained from the artificial intelligence on the base of many years recording data have confirmed the relevance and robustness of this model. The ANFIS model combining the concept of neural network and fuzzy logic was used to simulate the behaviour of piezometers and pendulums in the dam. This model has provided satisfactory results, given in the large amount of data to be processed. The water level evolution is modelled using the ANFIS function integrated in the MATLAB software and the result is compared to that obtained by the HST method. Afterwards, the state of stress on the structure and stability of the slope at shear have been assessed based on the hydro mechanical behaviour using the GEOSTUDIO Finite Element computation software. The input parameters are: the head of water recorded in the piezometers and geotechnical parameters of the dam. The modelling results in terms of displacement are accurately consistent with the displacement measurements. The horizontal displacement of pendulums obtained by GEOSTUDIO is 80 mm and those measured directly of the pendulums have 70 mm of average value. The safety factor for slope stability according to 530 m water level is 1.5.

Abstract

International audience; Introduction: Many studies based on cognitive framework focus on expertise-related differences in sport performance, none on criteria that would be common to the practice of some novices and experts. The defensive mobilization, a key aspect in volleyball (Selinger & Ackermann-Blount, 1987), seems to be one. Our enactive based study, conceiving cognition as a ‘teleological constraint’ (Weber & Varela, 2002; Laurent & Ripoll, 2009), aims to understand what underlies it.Method: We investigate 12 players regularly and strongly committed, with different levels of expertise (from beginner to highly skilled). Games were filmed and self-confrontation interview were realized. We bring primacy to various types of regularities identifiable about the action as it unfolds in situ. Analysis connects three kinds of regularities, related to: typical behaviors; discriminating circumstances of the game in which they are manifested; feelings and meanings expressed about these behaviors and circumstances.Results: Regularities pointed that there is a common convergence among these various players mobilized, between all of their discriminatory behavior (instantly oriented facing the ball, frequently manifest ready position, instantaneous spurts before giving up sometimes, extended attempts to contact the ball sometimes until fall or impact, frustration manifested when defensive failure occurs); and between these and feelings signified (defensive requirement been generalized, time and space always ever reported to the defending possibility, not reflected and impulsive rushes, prevalence of the defensive need on the bodily discomfort, pleasure felt in defensive success, dissatisfaction about inactive defending partners).Discussion: Despite their different expertise levels, players strongly committed in defense have in common an intrinsic teleology directed by their sensibility to the rally break. While this is at stake for them along the game, their domain of relevant interaction (Weber & Varela, 2002) is large: extremely attentive, they try to anticipate events, to be well positioned to save the ball and to avoid the rally’s breaking. This phenomenological assumption about proper world is consistent with Lazarus proposals on appraisal and commitment (2001). We claim the necessity to investigate such dimension to better understand sport performance.

Abstract

The target in this survey is to investigate deformations of laminates shells (DLS), due to asymmetric and axisymmetric loads, including several other loadings using N-T shell equations. We point out here, the contribution of the metric change in thickness for the analysis of static and linear behavior of laminated composite shells. To achieve this objective, we’ve applied N-T’s shells equations on the same monolayer laminate composite shell and derive the law of MBLS. The macrostructure is analyzed under static loads and implemented using low order curved shell finite elements with shifted Lagrange (CSFE-sh). We tested this element on benchmarks found within the literature. The analysis of cylindrical and spherical shells subjected to uniform sinusoidal pressures and asymmetric pressures reveals excellent accuracy compared to others. The results found without any correction factor were compared with those obtained by the analytical method and other finite element models.

Significant seismic activity has been observed during mining in the 100/900 orebodies at the Copper Cliff mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and in September 2008 a 3.8 Nuttli magnitude (Mn) seismic event occurred in the middle of the orebodies resulting in considerable damage to various excavations on multiple levels. An analysis showed that the previously installed support system was inadequate to withstand the impact of the dynamic load resulting from the seismic event. A rating system was developed to identify areas prone to bursting so that a burst- resistant support system could be employed in these areas. The system was designed to provide three support functions, reinforce the rock mass, retain the broken rock and securely hold the retaining elements, and included split sets, wire mesh, shotcrete, cone bolts, and resin rebars and twin cable bolts. Mining was resumed after installation of the system, and significant seismic activity was experienced with events of 1.2-2.9 Mn. 71. Identification of a sleep bruxism subgroup with a higher risk of pain.

Abstract

Sleep bruxism research diagnostic criteria (SB-RDC) have been applied since 1996. This study was performed to validate these criteria and to challenge the hypothesis that pain is associated with lower frequencies of orofacial activities. Polygraphic recordings were made of 100 individuals presenting with a clinical diagnosis of sleep bruxism and 43 control individuals. TwoStep Cluster analyses (SPSS) were performed with sleep bruxism variables to reveal groupings among sleep bruxers and control individuals. Participants completed questionnaires during screening, diagnosis, and recording sessions. Cluster analysis identified three subgroups of sleep bruxers. Interestingly, 45 of the 46 sleep bruxers with values below SB-RDC were classified in the low-frequency cluster. These individuals were more likely to complain of pain and fatigue of masticatory muscles than were the higher-frequency sleep bruxers (odds ratios > 3.9, p < 0.01). Sleep bruxers were distributed among three heterogeneous groups. Sleep bruxers with low frequencies of orofacial activities were more at risk of reporting pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Withdrawal periods required when doses of 24,000 IU and 66,000 IU of procaine penicillin G/kg body weight were administered to yearling beef steers by intramuscular injection daily for five consecutive days were investigated. These dosages are in excess of product label recommendations, but are in the range of procaine penicillin G dosages that have been administered for the treatment of some feedlot bacterial diseases. The approved dose in Canada is 7,500 IU/kg body weight intramuscularly, once daily, with a withdrawal period of five days. Based on the tissue residue data from this study, the appropriate withdrawal period is ten days for the 24,000 IU/kg body weight dose and 21 days for the 66,000 IU/kg body weight dose when administered intramuscularly to yearling beef steers. In a related study, 18 yearling beef steers received 66,000 IU of procaine penicillin G/kg body weight administered by subcutaneous injection, an extra-label treatment in terms of both dose and route of administration, typical of current practice in some circumstances. Deposits of the drug were visible at subcutaneous injection sites up to ten days after injection, with more inflammation and hemorrhage observed than for intramuscular injections of the same dose. These results suggest that procaine penicillin G should not be administered subcutaneously at high doses; and therefore a withdrawal period was not established for subcutaneous injection.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the highest dose of procaine penicillin G (PPG) which could be administered to allow a withdrawal period of 96 hours in the milk in milking dairy cows. Using two 4x4 latin square designs, two groups of lactating dairy cows (n=4 per group) received 4 different doses (7,000, 14,000, 21,000 and 28,000 IU/kg 20 mL/site of a 300 000 IU/mL of PPG . Each dose was administered once daily for 5 consecutive days to each cow by either the intramuscular (square 1) or subcutaneous route (square 2). Each cow received a new dose every 3 weeks. Milk samples were collected before administration and at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120 and 132 hours following the last day of administration. Concentration of penicillin in milk was measured using a quantitative Bacillus stearothermophilus disc method. For all 4 doses administered via the intramuscular route all the animals (n=4) had milk penicillin concentration less than 0.016 IU/mL by 84 hours. However, the cows that received the PPG via the subcutaneous route had penicillin concentration less than 0.016 IU/mL by 84 hours for the dosage of 7,000, 14,000 and 21,000 IU/kg while the penicillin concentrations remained higher than 0.016 IU/mL for 108 hours after the administration of the 28,000 IU/kg dose. Residual milk concentrations of penicillin were more variable and less predictable than those from the intramuscularly-injected cows. Abstract

The aim of the clinician when using antimicrobials is to provide effective treatment while minimizing residues in milk and meat. Among all antibiotics used in food animals, procaine penicillin G (PPG) is one of the oldest and is still one of the most widely used. Over the years, the recommended dosage has increased from 7, 500 IU /kg I. M. (the label dosage) to the recommended, but not approved dosage of 11,000 to 22,000 IU/kg administered I.M. or s.c. (1). The subcutaneous route is easier to use when large volumes need to be administered. Because of the discrepancy between the approved dosage of PPG and the dosages currently used in clinical practice, the purposes of the present study were twofold: firstly to determine whether increasing doses of PPG would provide corresponding increases in efficacy, as measured by the peak serum concentration (Cmax) value and the length of time during which the serum concentration of PPG would exceed the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC); secondly to determine whether the two routes of administration are comparable as true alternatives.
