Abstract

We search for correlations between positions of extragalactic objects and arrival directions of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) with primary energy $E \ge 40$ EeV as observed by the surface detector array of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment during the first 40 months of operation. We examined several public astronomical object catalogs, including the Veron-Cetty and Veron catalog of active galactic nuclei. We counted the number of TA events correlated with objects in each catalog as a function of three parameters: the maximum angular separation between a TA event and an object, the minimum energy of the events, and the maximum redshift of the objects. We determine combinations of these parameters which maximize the correlations, and calculate the chance probabilities of having the same levels of correlations from an isotropic distribution of UHECR arrival directions. No statistically significant correlations are found when penalties for scanning over the above parameters and for searching in several catalogs are taken into account.

Abstract

We measure the spectrum of cosmic rays with energies greater than $10^{18.2}$ eV with the Fluorescence Detectors (FDs) and the Surface Detectors (SDs) of the Telescope Array Experiment using the data taken in our first 2.3-year observation from May 27 2008 to September 7 2010. A hybrid air shower reconstruction technique is employed to improve accuracies in determination of arrival directions and primary energies of cosmic rays using both FD and SD data. The energy spectrum presented here is in agreement with our previously published spectra and the HiRes results., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We present a measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays performed by the Telescope Array experiment using monocular observations from its two new FADC-based fluorescence detectors. After a short description of the experiment, we describe the data analysis and event reconstruction procedures. Since the aperture of the experiment must be calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, we describe this calculation and the comparisons of simulated and real data used to verify the validity of the aperture calculation. Finally, we present the energy spectrum calculated from the merged monocular data sets of the two FADC-based detectors, and also the combination of this merged spectrum with an independent, previously published monocular spectrum measurement performed by Telescope Array's third fluorescence detector (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astropart. Phys.} 39 (2012), 109). This combined spectrum corroborates the recently published Telescope Array surface detector spectrum (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astrophys. Journ.} 768 (2013), L1) with independent systematic uncertainties., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

We search for ultra-high energy photons by analyzing geometrical properties of shower fronts of events registered by the Telescope Array surface detector. Abstract

The Telescope Array (TA) collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with primary energies above 1.6 x 10^(18) eV. This measurement is based upon four years of observation by the surface detector component of TA. The spectrum shows a dip at an energy of 4.6 x 10^(18) eV and a steepening at 5.4 x 10^(19) eV which is consistent with the expectation from the GZK cutoff. We present the results of a technique, new to the analysis of ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface detector data, that involves generating a complete simulation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays striking the TA surface detector. The procedure starts with shower simulations using the CORSIKA Monte Carlo program where we have solved the problems caused by use of the "thinning" approximation. This simulation method allows us to make an accurate calculation of the acceptance of the detector for the energies concerned., Comment: Accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of soy isoflavone daidzein on ruminal fermentation, microbial protein synthesis and rumen bacterial community in beef cattle. Six rumen-cannulated adult beef cattle were assigned to three blocks according to similar body weight in a randomised block design, with two cattle each block. Each block randomly received one of the two dietary treatments: control (basal concentrate) and daidzein (supplementation with 500 mg daidzein/kg basal concentrate). High-throughput sequencing data showed that supplemental daidzein increased the relative abundance of bacteria belonging to phylum Bacteroidetes (p = .050), but reduced and tended to reduce the relative abundance of phylum Spirochaetae (p = .030) and Firmicutes (p = .080). At the genus level, the relative abundance of Prevotella (p = .036), RC9_gut_group (p = .019), Succinivibrio (p = .093) and Ruminobacter (p = .085) were increased or tended to be increased by daidzein supplementation. However, supplemental daidzein reduced or tended to reduce some uncultured and unclassified bacteria genus belonging to Ruminococcaceae (p = .028), Prevotellaceae (p = .088) and Lachnospiraceae (p = .068). The ruminal pH (p = .023) and ammonia-N (p = .031) concentration were lower in the daidzein group than in the control group, but the daidzein group tended to have greater ruminal total VFA (p = .063) concentration. Supplemental daidzein increased urinary excretion of allantoin (p = .005) and total purine derivatives (p = .007). Current results suggest that supplemental daidzein can affect ruminal fermentation by changing ruminal microbial community, increase the production of VFA and enhance microbial protein synthesis in the rumen, showing the potential of daidzein for improving ruminal fermentation in beef cattle.

Abstract

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract

Three EMS mutant wheat lines with varied mobility of Wx-A1 and Wx-B1 were identified. In the mutant lines M2-97-8 and M2-104-2, Wx-B1 showed slightly faster mobility compared to those of wild line, and Wx-A1 in the mutant line M2-101-1 has a greatly faster mobility, which co-migrates with Wx-D1. The results of gene sequencing indicated that SNP mutations appeared within exon of Wx-1and further resulted in the mutation of amino acid residues in the mutant lines. The prediction analysis showed that the isoelectric point of the mutants M2-97-8 and M2-104-2 was more basic than that of the wild type while the isoelectric point of M2-101-1 was not changed; and the Waxy protein of the three mutations were all around 66 kDa. The SDS-PAGE results revealed that the mobility variation of Wx-B1 of M2-97-8 and M2-104-2 is due to the change of isoelectric point, while M2-101-1 may be caused by variation or modification of protein structure but not by the change of isoelectric point. The prokaryotic expression results further indicated that these mutated Wx-A1 and Wx-B1 genes migrated faster than those of wild Wx-A1 and Wx-B1 and were consistent with the results of molecular weight prediction. Although, the increased or decreased contents of total starch and amylose were observed in Wx-A1 or Wx-B1mutant, the correlation between the contents of total starch and amylose and the mutant Wx-A1 and Wx-B1 subunits cannot be determined. These mutants can not only increase the polymorphism of Waxy gene to investigate the function of these alleles, but also be valuable for wheat quality breeding.

79. Iteratively enhanced semidefinite relaxations for efficient neural network Verification

Abstract

We propose an enhanced semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation to enable the tight and efficient verification of neural networks (NNs). The tightness improvement is achieved by introducing a nonlinear constraint to existing SDP relaxations previously proposed for NN verification. The efficiency of the proposal stems from the iterative nature of the proposed algorithm in that it solves the resulting non-convex SDP by recursively solving auxiliary convex layer-based SDP problems. We show formally that the the solution generated by our algorithm is tighter than state-of-the-art SDP-based solutions for the problem. We also show that the solution sequence converges to the optimal solution of the non-convex enhanced SDP relaxation. The experimental results on standard benchmarks in the area show that our algorithm achieves the state-of-the-art performance whilst maintaining an acceptable computational cost.

80. A semidefinite relaxation based branch-and-bound method for tight neural network verification

Abstract

We introduce a novel method based on semidefinite program (SDP) for the tight and efficient verification of neural networks. The proposed SDP relaxation advances the present SoA in SDP-based neural network verification by adding a set of linear constraints based on eigenvectors. We extend this novel SDP relaxation by combining it with a branch-and-bound method that can provably close the relaxation gap up to zero. We show formally that the proposed approach leads to a provably tighter solution than the present SoA. We report experimental results showing that the proposed method outperforms baselines in terms of verified accuracy while retaining an acceptable computational overhead.

In this study, we determined the relationship between ODC1 and pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2, a key lactate metabolism enzyme), and determined the combined effects of difluoromethylornithine (DFMO; an ODC1 inhibitor) and compound 3k (a PKM2 inhibitor) on HCC cells.Methods: First, the relationship between PKM2 and ODC1 was analyzed using Western blotting, Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8 assays, transwell assays, bioinformatics, quantitative real-time fluorescent PCR (qRT-PCR), and immunohistochemical staining. Thereafter, the ODC1 inhibitor DFMO and the PKM2 inhibitor compound 3k were employed. Their combined effects on HCC cell proliferation and mobility were evaluated via CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, a subcutaneous xenograft tumor model in mice, wound healing assays, and transwell assays. Additionally, the effects of DFMO and compound 3k on the epithelial–mesenchymal transition phenotype and the AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway were explored using Western blotting and immunofluorescence.Results: PKM2 knockdown significantly decreased the ODC1 expression, and the proliferation and invasion of HCC cells, while ODC1 overexpression reversed the inhibitory effects of PKM2 knockdown. Similarly, inhibition of ODC1 also decreased the expression of PKM2 via reducing the c-myc-induced transcription. PKM2 was co-expressed with ODC1 in HCC samples, while simultaneously upregulated PKM2 and ODC1 led to the poorest survival outcome. DFMO and compound 3k synergistically inhibited HCC cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed cell mobility, as well as the EMT phenotype and the AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway. The AKT activator SC79 reversed the inhibitory effects.Conclusion: PKM2/ODC1 are involved in a positive feedback loop. The simultaneous inhibition of ODC1 and PKM2 using DFMO and compound 3k exerts synergistic effects against HCC cells via the AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway.
