This study is aimed at implementing the new methods for assessing changes in soil properties in the Tambov and Lipetsk Regions occurring in time and space under the influence of the low-growing apple orchard and fallow. The paper presents data on the physicochemical and physical parameters of various types of soils in the apple orchards in the north-eastern part of the Central Black Earth area. The apple orchard impact on soils as compared to the natural lands is estimated. The approaches to assessing soil transformations in the apple orchards are suggested. Each method application is exemplified in the form of tabulated data. Contours of the decreased content of moisture, nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium as well as the area of increased hydrolytic acidity in the apple tree rhizosphere were determined. When implementing all the recommended approaches, the most objective and complete assessment of the soil properties transformation in orchards is provided. The soil type profile demonstrates the comparative value of the removal of soil nutrients and elements of the soil compaction, acidulation, drying, and degradation, decrease in its biological activity, and, consequently, decrease in fertility. The changes in soil properties in the apple orchards occurring in space are documented through the graphical assessment, changes in time – through the individual assessment, properties deviation from the reference values – through the absolute and comparative assessment, and changes in fertility – through the bioindication. The value of the agricultural engineering impact on soil in horticulture is significantly higher than in field crop cultivation.

A new approach in advanced multiphase metering methodology designed for use in sour fields, quantifying H2S content in flow and properly accounting for it in the different phase rate measurements is presented. Flow metering in sour fields is challenging due to the need for containment of produced fluids and the effect of fluid properties in the interpretation of the measurements. The addition of H2S measurement provides additional information for production and reservoir monitoring and also yields improvements in flow metering, accounting for variations in fluid properties used for multi-phase calculation. Multiphase Flow Meters (MPFM) utilizing multi-energy gamma-ray fraction measurements are based on the ability of oil, gas, and water to absorb gamma rays of two different wavelengths. Adding an extra measurement at a third level of energy and leveraging the large contrast between the attenuation of sulfur and that of hydrocarbon and water components makes it possible to determine the mass fraction of H2S as an additional output. This technique was applied in Tengiz field, Kazakhstan, characterized by a high H2S content. In order to maintain reservoir pressure, improve recovery and utilize produced associated gas, a sour gas miscible flood pilot was started in 2007. The monitoring of compositional variation in producers is critical in the understanding of solvent (sour gas) distribution and thus in managing production-injection patterns to optimize plant throughput. Early field trials of the method were made comparing metered H2S content with surface PVT samples, confirming the accuracy of the methodology. The technology was then implemented systematically but strategically across the field. The in-line H2S measurement with automatic updates for variation in fluid properties was applied in two distinct areas: within the sour gas injection pilot area, where solvent levels vary, and outside the area where hydrocarbon composition is known to be homogeneous and constant. Long and short term tests with multi-rate well tests were conducted. Full datasets were collected from the MPFM to evaluate measurement stability and representativity under different flowing conditions and compared to results obtained without accounting for compositional changes. The results show a stable, accurate and continuous measurement of H2S content in produced fluid and an enhanced measurements of water, oil and gas rates comparable with PVT results. The in-line H2S measurement based on multi-energy gamma ray measurements is the only continuous H2S measurement technology available in multiphase flow conditions. It can be retrofitted to existing MPFMs, allowing to get additional parameter and enhanced stability of flow rate measurements where properties of produced fluid vary continuously. This paper will begin with a presentation of the theory, formulation and validation of the in-line H2S measurement and then go on to present a case history of the application in the Tengiz field, Kazakhstan for Tengizchevroil (TCO).

In high temperature tokamak regimes, the m=1 reconnecting mode is governed by two fluid effects associated with the electron skin‐depth de=c/ωpe and the ion sound radius ρs=cs/Ωci. To clarify the early nonlinear dynamics of this mode, numerical simulations of a two fluid model are presented. To simulate physically reasonable parameters in a tokamak geometry, an efficient approach is used in which only a narrow layer surrounding the q=1 surface and m=1 magnetic island must be simulated. In the usual tokamak case ρs≳de, as well as the limit ρs=0, the early nonlinear growth of the mode is faster than exponential due a broadening of the flow layer. This broadening appears to result from tension in the magnetic field lines, which acts to pull the layer open as the island grows.

Earlier studies of sawtooth oscillations in Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) supershots [Levinton et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2895 (1994); Zakharov et al., ‘‘Onset and stabilization of sawtooth oscillations in tokamaks,’’ in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Proceedings of the 15th International Conference, Seville, 1994 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, in press)] have found an apparent contradiction between conventional linear theory and experiment: even in sawtooth‐free discharges, the theory typically predicts instability due to a nearly ideal m=1 mode. Here, the nonlinear evolution of such mode is analyzed using numerical simulations of a two‐fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. We find the mode saturates nonlinearly at a small amplitude provided the ion and electron drift‐frequencies ω*i,e are somewhat above the linear stability threshold of the collisionless m=1 reconnecting mode. The comparison of the simulation results to m=1 mode activity in TFTR suggests add...

The theory of the early nonlinear stage of reconnection, when the plasma central core displacement ξ0 is still small with respect to the q=1 radius r1 but exceeds the characteristic width of the singular layer, is considered. The two‐dimensional magnetic geometry of m=1 reconnection is determined by solving Waelbroeck’s equations [Phys. Fluids B 1, 2372 (1989)]. Fast nonlinear exponential growth of the mode in contemporary high‐temperature experiments is explained on the basis of the nonlinear two‐fluid magnetohydrodynamic theory. It is shown that the stabilization of the reconnecting m=1 mode by ω*‐effects is in qualitative agreement with experimental observations. A nonlinear cancellation of the ω*‐stabilization is proposed as explanation of the triggering of the sawtooth crash.

The two‐fluid linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory of the internal kink mode is studied in finite β regimes relevant to recent high‐temperature tokamak experiments. It is found that the scale length of the plasma motion decouples due to the Hall term from the scale length of the current layer and becomes the ‘‘ion‐sound Larmor radius’’ ρs=cs/Ωci, where cs=√(Te+γiTi)/mi is the ion‐sound speed (γi=5/3 for adiabatic ions), and Ωci is the ion‐cyclotron frequency. The predictions of two‐fluid MHD for the m=1 reconnection mode are shown to be in good quantitative agreement with analogous results of kinetic studies. An important nonlinear consequence of this relatively large scale length for the plasma motion is that the reconnection time in Kadomtsev’s model becomes τ = τ*Aa1/1/ρs∝ a1/1R√n/[(1 − q0)√Te+(5/3)Ti], which seems able to account for the fast sawtooth crash.

Third harmonic hydrogen cyclotron fast wave heating studies are planned in the near term on CDX-U to investigate the potential for bulk ion heating. In preparation for these studies, the available radio-frequency power in CDX-U has been increased to 0.5 MW. The operating frequency of the CDX-U radio-frequency transmitter was lowered to operate in the range of 8-10 MHz, providing access to the ion harmonic range 2* {approx} 4* in hydrogen. A similar regime is accessible for the 30 MHz radio-frequency system on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), at 0.6 Tesla in hydrogen. Preliminary computational studies over the plasma regimes of interest for NSTX and CDX-U indicate the possibility of strong localized absorption on bulk ion species.

The experimental program for a proposed plasma facility, the ITER Divertor Experiment and Laboratory (IDEAL) is described. This device is to test ITER divertor concepts and prototype divertor modules in a rapid and accurate fashion. Goals of the program are to corroborate models of heat and helium exhaust and predictions of component lifetime. The program consists of a physics divertor concept development and testing phase (including an initial shakedown period), and a technology phase. By this program, candidate divertor modules would be exposed, in 3 years on IDEAL, to a plasma fluence in excess of that expected in ITER after 10 years of full-power operation.

It is shown that the addition of dipyridamole (2,6-bis(diethanolamino)-4,8-dipiperidinopyrimido[5,4d]py rim idine) (up to 10(-4) M) leads to a drastic acceleration of the dark recombination reaction between photooxidized bacteriochlorophyll and photoreduced primary quinone in reaction centers of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The value of the acceleration is similar to that registered under cryogenic temperatures. The extent of the effect of dipyridamole derivatives depended on their structure. In wild-type bacteriorhodopsin and D96N mutant, dipyridamole slowed down the Schiff base reprotonation (the kinetics of M412 form decay was registered). It is suggested that dipyridamole can influence the structural and dynamic state of membrane proteins by affecting the system of their hydrogen-bonds and thus modify electron and proton transport processes.

Measurements from the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) of the q-profile using motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimetry and the pressure profiles have allowed detailed comparison of both supershots and L-mode discharges to theoretical models describing the stability of sawteeth. In TFTR supershots sawteeth are usually absent, whereas in L-mode discharges they are generally present, and in both cases q(O) is less than one. It has been found that the {omega}*-stabilization criterion of the two-fluid collisionless m=l reconnection mode agrees very well with the presence or absence of sawteeth in TFTR and no beta limits to the sawtooth stabilization have been observed.

A theoretical concept of onset and stabilization of sawtooth oscillations in tokamaks is formulated based on the analysis of supershots in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR). While the linear theory, which includes the ideal m = 1 mode, contradicts the experimental data, the criterion of {omega}*-stabilization of the collisionless m = 1 reconnection mode determines an operational space for the sawtooth-free phase in TFTR.

Gastroschisis is considered by the authors to be an embryopathy. The main principles of management of newborns with gastroschisis are: warming of the newborn, rehydration, measures against pseudoobstruction of the intestine. An effective method which could be recommended for all kinds of operations for defects of the anterior abdominal wall is a "manual enlargement of the abdominal cavity" during operation.

The paper deals with the results of treatment of 32 children aged from 2 to 12 years with injuries to the arteries (n = 7), tendons of the hand and fingers (n = 9), nerves of the fingers (n = 3), cryptorchidism (n = 6), tumour of a finger (n = 1), and traumatic amputation of a finger (n = 1). Drainage of a lymph vessel in the foot for lymph infusion in +suppurative conditions was carried out in 8 patients. Optic magnification, inert suture material, and microsurgical instruments were used in the operations. The anatomical and functional results were excellent and good in 30 patients. In an 8-year-old girl, the results of a restorative operation on the flexor tendons of the ring finger of the left hand were satisfactory. In a boy two and a half years of age, replantation of the index finger of the left hand proved a failure. Microsurgical methods make it possible to attain utmost precision in forming vascular anastomoses, applying sutures to the nerves of the fingers and tendons, and in other operations. Microsurgery holds much promise in pediatric surgery.

With a view to creating the Si LED, the mechanisms of electroluminescence (EL) in SiO
x Ny (Si) nanocomposite films with Si nanocrystals embedded in the SiOx Ny matrix are studied experimentally and theoretically. The most important results are obtained from a Au/SiOx Ny Si)/p-Si structure having a semitransparent electrode, the oxynitride film containing Si nanocrystals with a mean size of 3–5 nm and a concentration of ∼1018 cm−3 ; the measurements are made on a reverse-biased structure (substrate potential negative). Room-temperature EL is observed in the visible and IR ranges; the respective peaks are located at wavelengths of 600–700 and about 1200 nm. The study examines current-voltage characteristics of the structure and the dependence of integrated EL intensity on current, voltage, film thickness, the type of substrate conductivity, etc. The following conclusions are drawn from the experimental and theoretical results: The IR branch is mainly associated with carrier heating, avalanche ionization, and formation of light-emitting microplasmas near the substrate-film interface. The visible branch is linked to (i) hot-electron injection from the substrate into the film and (ii) impact excitation of luminescent centers at nanocrystal-matrix interfaces. Abstract With a view to creating Si LEDs, the structural and luminescent properties of SiOxNy films containing Si nanocrystals in the SiOxNy matrix are studied experimentally. It is found that the film structure (nanocrystal size and concentration, the presence of an amorphous phase, etc.) and the spectrum and intensity of photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) are strongly dependent on the Si stoichiometric excess δ and annealing conditions. At δ≈ 10%, unannealed films are amorphous and contain Si clusters of size < 2 nm, as deduced from the TEM and microdiffraction data obtained. Annealing at 800–1000°C for 10–60 min produces Si crystals 3–5 nm in size with a concentration of ≈1018 cm−3. The annealed films exhibit room-temperature PL and EL over the wavelength range 400–850 nm with intensity peaks located at 50–60 and 60–70 nm, respectively. The PL and EL spectra are found to be qualitatively similar. This suggests that both the PL and the EL should be associated with the formation of luminescent centers at nanocrystal–matrix interfaces and in boundary regions. However, the two phenomena should differ in the mechanism by which the centers are excited. With the EL, excitation should occur by impact processes due to carrier heating in high electric fields. It is found that as δ increases, so does the proportion of large amorphous Si clusters with a high density of dangling bonds. This enhances nonradiative recombination and suppresses luminescence. It should be noted that the sections of the fibers with d B = 1 and 1.23 mm were close to cylindrical shape and therefore their mean diameters were determined as the arithmetic mean value of several measurements. Investigations of the smaller diameter fibers by means of an optical microscope showed that their cross sections appear to be deformed ellipses. The results of management of 7 newborns with gastroschisis in 1980-1987 are discussed. Four of them were treated by the earlier described method of "manual distention" of the abdominal cavity by stretching the abdominal wall with the finger, 3 patients recovered. The method was not applied to the other 3 patients and all of them died. It is emphasized that the baby must be kept warm in the preoperative period and hypovolemia must be controlled. In view of the prolonged paralytic ileus complete parenteral feeding must be prescribed in the postoperative period until the function of the gastrointestinal tract becomes normal. All the modern principles of management of these patients must be scrupulously followed in order to accomplish successful treatment and improve the results.

Nuclear and High Energy Physics ,Condensed Matter Physics - Abstract
In the last two experimental campaigns, the low aspect ratio NSTX has explored physics issues critical to both toroidal confinement physics and ITER. Experiments have made extensive use of lithium coatings for wall conditioning, correction of non-axisymmetric field errors and control of n = 1 resistive wall modes (RWMs) to produce high-performance neutral-beam heated discharges extending to 1.7 s in duration with non-inductive current fractions up to 0.7. The RWM control coils have been used to trigger repetitive ELMs with high reliability, and they have also contributed to an improved understanding of both neoclassical tearing mode and RWM stabilization physics, including the interplay between rotation and kinetic effects on stability. High harmonic fast wave (HHFW) heating has produced plasmas with central electron temperatures exceeding 6 keV. The HHFW heating was used to show that there was a 20–40% higher power threshold for the L–H transition for helium than for deuterium plasmas. A new diagnostic showed a depletion of the fast-ion density profile over a broad spatial region as a result of toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) and energetic-particle modes (EPMs) bursts. In addition, it was observed that other modes (e.g. global Alfvén eigenmodes) can trigger TAE and EPM bursts, suggesting that fast ions are redistributed by high-frequency AEs. The momentum pinch velocity determined by a perturbative technique decreased as the collisionality was reduced, although the pinch to diffusion ratio, V pinch/χϕ, remained approximately constant. The mechanisms of deuterium retention by graphite and lithium-coated graphite plasma-facing components have been investigated. To reduce divertor heat flux, a novel divertor configuration, the ‘snowflake’ divertor, was tested in NSTX and many beneficial aspects were found. A reduction in the required central solenoid flux has been realized in NSTX when discharges initiated by coaxial helicity injection were ramped in current using induction. The resulting plasmas have characteristics needed to meet the objectives of the non-inductive start-up and ramp-up program of NSTX.

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014–2018 and 2019–2020 under Grant Agreement No. 633053. Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. In particular, the amplitude and frequency of type I ELMs have been actively controlled over a wide parameter range (q(95) = 3-4.8, beta(N)

We studied combined suspension compositions prepared by liquid-phase mechanical treatment based on the fungicides difenoconazole, tebuconazole, imazalil, fludioxanil, thiabendazole, prochloraz, sedoxan and the insecticides thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, plant growth regulators Enershanse, which showed a wide range of biological activity in field conditions. It was established that the main indicators of the quality of the final product - the nature of the grain, the amount of protein and gluten, glassiness, and the quality of gluten - depended on the fungicidal and insecticidal effects on the phytosanitary condition of winter wheat crops. All studied drugs had a protective effect. They contributed to the disinfection of winter wheat seeds from seed and soil pathology and harmful insects of the early period of plant development. It was found that for effective treatment of winter wheat seeds, it is best to use insectofungicidal preparations containing several components of different chemical classes. It was found that pre-sowing treatment of winter wheat seeds with a suspension composition of thiamethoxam + sedaxan + fludioxonil + tebuconazole in the form of Vibranse Integral, suspension concentrate provided the greatest increase in grain yield by 0.49 t/ha (7.3%) with a control yield of 6.74 t/ha. The use of this drug ensures a particularly high protein content in the grain (16.07%) and gluten (36.8%) of the first quality group. We have established diverse positive effects of the drug Vibranse Integral, manifested in enhancing the growth processes of the root system due to the presence of the sedaxane molecule, the purpose of which is aimed at the formation of a healthy and well-developed root system, increasing the stress resistance of plants to abiotic factors, and the manifestation of a good protective effect in relation to soil and seed infections. We determined the lowest, relative to other studied drugs, yield (6.17 t/ha) from the use of a suspension composition of thiamethoxam (262.5 g/l) + difenoconazole (25 g/l) + fludioxonil (25 g/l (Celest Top), but the grain was of high quality. All other seed protectants occupied an intermediate position between the above-mentioned drugs.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found applications in many image processing tasks, such as feature extraction, image classification, and object recognition. It has also been shown that the inverse of CNNs, so- called deconvolutional neural networks, can be used for inverse problems such as plasma tomography. In essence, plasma tomography consists in reconstructing the 2D plasma profile on a poloidal cross-section of a fusion device, based on line-integrated measurements from multiple radiation detectors. Since the reconstruction process is computationally intensive, a deconvolutional neural network trained to produce the same results will yield a significant computational speedup, at the expense of a small error which can be assessed using different metrics. In this work, we discuss the design principles behind such networks, including the use of multiple layers, how they can be stacked, and how their dimensions can be tuned according to the number of detectors and the desired tomographic resolution for a given fusion device. We describe the application of such networks at JET and COMPASS, where at JET we use the bolometer system, and at COMPASS we use the soft X-ray diagnostic based on photodiode arrays.

- Abstract
Group VII Tc and Re have long been studied to develop both radiopharmaceuticals and technologies for nuclear materials management. Fundamental research has targeted understanding this periodic table crossroads where polyoxometalates meets metal-metal bonded complexes. Here we have isolated green hygroscopic and metastable crystals of (Re
VI,oct )2 (ReVII,tet )2 (OH)2 (O)12 ⋅H2 O (ReVI,VII -green, tet=tetrahedral, oct=octahedral), determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. In addition to color, Re-L1 X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy confirms the reduced oxidation state. ReVI,VII -green provides the first demonstration of Re autoreduction, long-observed for Mn and Tc. We also isolated and structurally characterized [Tc4 O4 (H2 O)2 (ReO4 )14 ]2- (Tc4 Re14 ) polyanion crystals that contain Tc(V) and Re(VII), consistent with greater stability of reduced Tc compared to reduced Re. Small angle X-ray scattering of both compounds and prior-reported polyanion [Tc4 O4 (H2 O)2 (TcO4 )14 ]4- (Tc20 ) dissolved in acetonitrile indicated a qualitative lability order of oxo-linkages of Re-O-Re > Re-O-Tc >Tc-O-Tc, and lability of Tc20 was also probed by99 Tc nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Computation provided insight into99 Tc chemical shifts as well as lability. Based on both reducibility and solution phase dynamics of polynuclear compounds investigated here, Re is an imperfect surrogate for Tc, and further expansion of group VII polyoxometalate chemistry seems promising., (© 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)- Published

- Abstract
Recent studies have highlighted how reactive sulfur species (RSS) can be regulated and transported by metal-sulfur coordination compounds. We report herein the reactivity of
Ph B(t BuIm)3 NiCl ( 1 ) with RSS, including the hydrosulfide anion ([Bu4 N][SH]) and a reduced tetrasulfide ([K18-C-6]2 [S4 ]). The strongly donating tris (carbene) ligand in 1 is geometrically constrained to a tetrahedral geometry, and the energetically preferable square planar geometry is not achievable with the [Ph B(t BuIm)3 ]- ligand. Upon reaction of 1 with [Bu4 N][SH] and [K18-C-6]2 [S4 ], the square planar complexesPh B(t BuIm)2 (t BuImH)Ni(SH)2 ( 2 ) andPh B(t BuIm)2 (t BuImH)Ni(η2 -S2 ) ( 3 ) are formed, respectively, via the protonation of one carbene ligand donor atom. Mechanistic investigation suggest that protonation occurs either from decomposition of 1 during the reaction progress, reactions with advantageous [Bu4 N]+ /[K18-C-6]+ countercations or from the generation of transient unidentified RSS that facilitate proton transfer reactions.- Published

- Abstract
A new class of macrocyclic angle-strained alkynes whose size and reactivity can be precisely tuned by modular organic synthesis is disclosed. Detailed analysis of the size-dependent structural and electronic properties provides evidence for considerable distortion of the alkyne units incorporated into the cycloparaphenylene (CPP)-derived macrocycles. The remarkable increase of the alkyne reactivity with decreasing macrocycle size in [2+2]cycloaddition-retrocyclization was investigated by joint experimental and theoretical studies and the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters that govern this reaction were unraveled. Additionally, even the largest, least strained macrocycle in this series was found to undergo strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) efficiently under mild conditions, thereby paving the way to the application of alkyne-containing CPPs as fluorescent "clickable" macrocyclic architectures., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. - Abstract
H-bonding interaction of acidic moieties (CH
2 OH, COOH) at the 5- and 5'-positions of bis(1,3-phenylene)-32-crown-10 (1) with di- or tritopic anions leads to enhanced formation of inclusion complexes with N,N'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium salts ("paraquats", 2); the enforced folding of the crown ethers into pseudocryptands thus leads to pseudo-pseudorotaxanes. Strikingly, in the presence of the most effective anion (trifluoroacetate, TFA), the apparent bimolecular association constants for crown-paraquat complexation increase by more than an order of magnitude and approach those for covalent cryptands derived from the crown ether. Even though they may form pseudocryptands, the picolinate, nicotinate, and isonicotinate diesters 6 of cis-(4,4')-bis(hydroxymethyl)dibenzo-30-crown-10 do not exhibit enhanced binding of either diquat or paraquat relative to the starting diol in contrast to the picolinate ester of isomeric 5,5'-bis(hydroxymethyl)bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10, which displayed a higher binding constant than the starting diol. The results for the analogous reverse esters 7 derived from cis-(4,4')-dicarboxydibenzo-30-crown-10 and pyridylmethanols reveal weaker complexes with diquat than the normal esters 6; however, surprisingly, two reverse esters 7 complex paraquat more strongly than isomers 6.- Published

- Abstract
Crystals of [NaU(Mo6P4O31H7)2]·5Na·(H2O)n (NaUMo6) have been synthesized by slow evaporation of an aqueous mixture containing uranyl nitrate, sodium molybdate, phosphoric acid, and sodium dithionate. Single crystal diffraction of NaUMo6 reveals the assembly of {Mo6P4} clusters linked into one-dimensional chains with alternating Na(+) and U(4+) cations. To our knowledge, NaUMo6 is a unique example of Mo(5+) based polyoxometalate associated with actinides. With the use of similar synthesis conditions but without uranium in the aqueous solution, [Na(Mo6P4O31H10)2]·5Na·(H2PO4)·(H2O)n (NaMo6) is obtained. NaMo6 is a sandwich type cluster which is built on the assemblage of two {Mo6P4} units linked by one sodium cation. Using small-angle X-ray scattering techniques and aqueous electrolyte based dissolution strategies, we can accurately observe chains of [UNa(Mo6P4O31H7)2]n(5n), where n = 7 is the dominant soluble specie. Likewise, the dimeric form of [Na(Mo6P4O31H10)2](5-) dominates the aqueous solution, revealing the structural units observed in the crystal structure are also stable in solution, under appropriate dissolution conditions.

- Abstract
[Sc(2)(μ-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6)(NO(3))(2)](NO(3))(2) has been synthesized from an aqueous scandium nitrate solution by using zinc powder as a reducing agent for nitric acid, which drives an increase in pH and forces the condensation of aqua scandium cations. This preparative route readily produces gram-scale samples with yields near 65%. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals a structure characterized by a hydroxo-bridged Sc dimer. The FTIR spectrum of the compound has been modeled via ab initio computations, allowing the identification of signature IR peaks. Some initial observations on the thermal transformation of the compound to Sc(2)O(3) are also reported.

- Abstract
The lithium tokamak experiment (LTX) is a modest-sized spherical tokamak (R(0)=0.4 m and a=0.26 m) designed to investigate the low-recycling lithium wall operating regime for magnetically confined plasmas. LTX will reach this regime through a lithium-coated shell internal to the vacuum vessel, conformal to the plasma last-closed-flux surface, and heated to 300-400 °C. This structure is highly conductive and not axisymmetric. The three-dimensional nature of the shell causes the eddy currents and magnetic fields to be three-dimensional as well. In order to analyze the plasma equilibrium in the presence of three-dimensional eddy currents, an extensive array of unique magnetic diagnostics has been implemented. Sensors are designed to survive high temperatures and incidental contact with lithium and provide data on toroidal asymmetries as well as full coverage of the poloidal cross-section. The magnetic array has been utilized to determine the effects of nonaxisymmetric eddy currents and to model the start-up phase of LTX. Measurements from the magnetic array, coupled with two-dimensional field component modeling, have allowed a suitable field null and initial plasma current to be produced. For full magnetic reconstructions, a three-dimensional electromagnetic model of the vacuum vessel and shell is under development.

- Abstract
Dehydroacetic acid reacts with acetic anhydride in the presence of perchloric acid to give a salt which upon careful neutralization affords a fused bis-gamma-pyrone. The bis-gamma-pyrone forms stable metal complexes with Li, Mg, Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn, Fe(II), Co(II) and Ba perchlorates whose crystal structures reveal that the ligand possesses significant bispyrylium character while the metal is coordinated at the negatively charged edge of the structure.
