Salmonella spp. is an important zoonotic agent. Wild boars might host this pathogen in the intestinal tract and might represent a risk for Salmonella spp. transmission to humans. Wild boars are widely spread in Liguria, due to the environmental characteristics of the region. The aim of the study was the isolation, typing, and investigation of antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolated strains of Salmonella spp. During the 2013-2017 hunting seasons, 4335 livers of wild boars were collected and analyzed for the presence of Salmonella spp. A total of 260 strains of Salmonella spp. were isolated and characterized, with a prevalence of 6%. The isolated strains belonged to all six Salmonella enterica subspecies. Most of them were identified as Salmonella enterica subs. enterica of which 31 different serotypes were identified. The dominating serotype identified was S. Enteritidis. The antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolated strains were analyzed against sixteen molecules. Of the isolated strains, 94.6% were resistant to at least one of the tested antimicrobials. This study showed the circulation of resistant Salmonella spp. strains in the wild boar population living in this area of Italy, underling the potential risk for these animals to disseminate this pathogen and its antimicrobial resistances.

Background: Peanuts and tree nut allergies pose an increasing food safety problem. The aim of our study was to test the accuracy of different commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits in the detection of the presence of walnuts in untreated and heat exposed food samples. The effects of thermal treatment of samples were evaluated by exposing walnuts to different heat treatments. All samples were first analysed by two different commercial ELISA assays. Then, we performed a skin prick test (SPT) on nine patients with proven nut allergy using small walnut pieces from raw and treated samples., Results: The presence of nuts proteins in thermally processed foods was not accurately detected by ELISA kits. All patients had a positive SPT reaction with raw walnut, while thermal treatments affected walnut allergenicity. The ELISA test gives a negative result in the case of strong thermal treatment, but at the same time allergic subjects react positively to stimulation with the same sample., Conclusion: This study suggests that commercial ELISA kits may not be able to accurately determine the amount of proteins present in thermally processed foods due to changes in the solubility and immunoreactivity of the target proteins. Aims and Background: In Italy, euthanasia and assisted suicide remain illegal but have been the subject of constant debate. Such discussions, however, seem to take relatively little account of physicians' views and attitudes., Methods and Study Design: We used an anonymous questionnaire to survey the attitudes and practices concerning euthanasia and the care of terminally ill patients of 5000 Italian physicians from among the approximately 20,000 members of seven of the most important Italian scientific societies. They were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire consisting of 15 items, which also collected demographic and professional information., Results: The response rate was 23.5%, and 855 questionnaires were returned. The respondents (75% males) had a median age of 51 years and 47% practiced medicine in a hospital or university setting. The survey showed that the attitude of Italian physicians towards caring for terminal patients is generally against the practice of euthanasia insofar as 84% and 87%, respectively, would, on a theoretical basis, be unwilling to prescribe or administer lethal drugs. Only 1.2-2% of the physicians declared that they had resorted at least once to active euthanasia practices consisting of the prescription and/or direct administration of lethal drugs during their professional lives, and 0.5-0.9% during the previous year. The main factor significantly influencing the opinions and behaviors of the physicians was religion., Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first Italian survey investigating the opinions and practices on euthanasia of a large sample of physicians from all over the country, belonging to various medical specialties. Our findings confirm the considerable influence of religion on physician's opinions and practice concerning end-of-life care.

In 20 patients with nephrotic syndrome (10 minimal change glomerulonephritis, MCN; 10 focal glomerulosclerosis, FGS) the peripheral blood lymphocytes showed a statistically significant increase in IgG-bearing cells (SIgG-C) in comparison with 30 patients with other histological types of primary glomerulonephritis with and without nephrotic syndrome (14 and 16, respectively). In the same MCN and FGS patients the serum IgG levels were slightly decreased. Furthermore, 5 cases of MCN in sustained remission for 1 year after steroid therapy showed normalization of the SIgG-C and the serum IgG levels. The possible significance of these phenomena in the pathogenesis of the hypo-IgG-globulinemia in MCN and FGS is discussed.

One hundred and one patients were treated for up to two years for three hours every other day (10.5 hr/week), or four hours thrice-weekly with conventional disposable 1m2 dialysers have been investigated. Rigorous control of water balance and the maintenance of predialysis serum K and PO4 within normal limits were the main criteria for judging the adequacy of the treatment. The results regarding blood pressure, phosphate problems, haematocrit, peripheral nerve status, pericarditis and range of rehabilitation are discussed.

Unlabelled: The clinical and bioptic aspects of 211 cases of primary mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis with urinary abnormalities lasting mre than 1 year were reviewed. We observed the following clinical syndromes: 1) Persistent proteinuria, isolated or with microhematuria: - a) with latent onset: 39% with hypertension (H); 10% with renal failure (RF); - b) with acute nephritic syndrome at onset: 31% with H; 6% with RF; 2) Recurrent macroscopic hematuria: 26% with H; 10% with RF; 3) Nephrotic syndrome: 70% with H; 29% with RF. The histological lesions, diffuse in all cases, appeared unrelated to the clinical syndromes and/or immunofluorescent patterns. In 65 cases with prevalent mesangial deposits of IgA, 46% showed persistent proteinuria with latent onset, 23% persistent proteinuria with acute nephritic syndrome at onset, 28% recurrent hematuria and 3% nephrotic syndrome. 37% of such patients developed H, 14% RF and 6% remission (R). On the other hand in 65 patients with other deposits the clinical aspects were as follows: persistent proteinuria with latent onset: 46%; persistent proteinuria with acute nephritic syndrome at onset: 31%; recurrent hematuria: 17%; nephrotic syndrome: 6%. 35% of these cases displayed H; 9% RF and 8% R., Conclusion: primary mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis appears to represent a heterogeneous group with only the morphological aspects in common and associated with one of the three above-mentioned clinical syndromes. Immunohistology shows different Ig and/or complement which bear no specific relationship with clinical courses. In particular IgA deposits are present in 50% of the cases and are only related to higher incidence of recurrent hematuria and abnormal IgA serum levels.

Two cases of Fabry's disease (FD) with lymphedema of the lower limbs are reported. On the basis of lymphographic investigations showing lymphatic aplasia, the hypothesis of an inborn error in the development of the lymphatic system of the lower limbs--Familial Lymphedema--controlled by a gene associated with FD gene on the same chromosome, is suggested.
