The understanding of the Earth through global land monitoring from satellite images paves the way towards many applications including flight simulations, urban management and telecommunications. The twin satellites from the Sentinel-2 mission developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) provide 13 spectral bands with a high observation frequency worldwide. In this paper, we present a novel multi-temporal approach for land-cover classification of Sentinel-2 images whereby a time-series of images is classified using fully convolutional network U-Net models and then coupled by a developed probabilistic algorithm. The proposed pipeline further includes an automatic quality control and correction step whereby an external source can be introduced in order to validate and correct the deep learning classification. The final step consists of adjusting the combined predictions to the cloud-free mosaic built from Sentinel-2 L2A images in order for the classification to more closely match the reference mosaic image.

Global Earth observation from satellite images is an active research topic, driven by numerous applications, such as telecommunications, defence, natural hazard monitoring and urban management. The recently launched twin Sentinel-2 satellites acquire 13-band optical data with a 2–5 day revisit time, freely available for any use, and thus very valuable for global Earth observation. In this paper, we present a completely automatic operational chain for a global cloud-free mosaic and classification of Sentinel-2 images. The proposed pipeline enables producing the world 10-m cloud-free mosaic, and a 6-class landcover classification map.

Automatic city modeling from satellite imagery is a popular yet challenging topic in remote sensing, driven by numerous applications such as telecommunications, defence and urban mamagement. In this paper, we present an automated chain for large-scale 3D reconstruction of urban scenes with a Level of Detail 1 from satellite images. The proposed framework relies on two key ingredient. First, from a stereo pair of images, we estimate a digital terrain model and a digital height model, by using a novel set of feature descriptors based on multiscale morphological analysis. Second, inspired by recent works in machine learning, we extract in an automatic way contour polygons of buildings, by adopting a fully convolutional network U-Net followed by a polygonization of the predicted mask of buildings. We demonstrate the potential of our chain by reconstructing in an automated way different areas of the world.

Effects of radio frequency heating on particle confinement have been observed in various tokamaks, where it was found that impurities can be effectively pumped out of the plasma core when sufficient central ion cyclotron (ICH) and/or electron cyclotron heating (ECH) power is applied. It has been proposed that radio frequency heating prevents impurity accumulation by modifying the gradients of temperature and current and hence the turbulence regime responsible for particle anomalous flow. In this paper we present a study of the behavior of molybdenum injected in full lower-hybrid current drive plasmas in the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade with strong ECH. Three similar discharges with increasing level of ECH power are discussed in terms of plasma and power deposition profiles. Strong accumulation of the impurity is observed during off axis heating, while for central ECH deposition the concentration of molybdenum in the core of the discharges decreases at the highest level of ECH power (PECH = 1.2 MW). Microturbulence stability analysis has been carried out for the three plasmas and the relative importance of the off diagonal terms in the transport matrix for the pinch velocity of molybdenum has been studied with reference to FTU results on electron transport and in the framework of recent theoretical results. The behaviour of tungsten in the core of hybrid scenario plasmas in JET with the ITER-like wall is analysed and modelled with a combination of neoclassical and gyrokinetic codes. In these discharges, good confinement conditions can be maintained only for the first 2–3 s of the high power phase. Later W accumulation is regularly observed, often accompanied by the onset of magneto-hydrodynamical activity, in particular neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs), both of which have detrimental effects on the global energy confinement. The dynamics of the accumulation process is examined, taking into consideration the concurrent evolution of the background plasma profiles, and the possible onset of NTMs. Two time slices of a representative discharge, before and during the accumulation process, are analysed with two independent methods, in order to reconstruct the W density distribution over the poloidal cross-section. The same time slices are modelled, computing both neoclassical and turbulent transport components and consistently including the impact of centrifugal effects, which can be significant in these plasmas, and strongly enhance W neoclassical transport. The modelling closely reproduces the observations and identifies inward neoclassical convection due to the density peaking of the bulk plasma in the central region as the main cause of the accumulation. The change in W neoclassical convection is directly produced by the transient behaviour of the main plasma density profile, which is hollow in the central region in the initial part of the high power phase of the discharge, but which develops a significant density peaking very close to the magnetic axis in the later phase. The analysis of a large set of discharges provides clear indications that this effect is generic in this scenario. The unfavourable impact of the onset of NTMs on the W behaviour, observed in several discharges, is suggested to be a consequence of a detrimental combination of the effects of neoclassical transport and of the appearance of an island. Numerous studies have suggested a significant role that protein dynamics play in optimizing enzyme catalysis, and changes in conformational sampling offer a window to explore this role. Thermolysin from Bacillus thermoproteolyticus rokko, which is a heat-stable zinc metalloproteinase, serves here as a model system to study changes of protein function and conformational sampling across a temperature range of 16–36 °C. The temperature dependence of kinetics of thermolysin showed a biphasic transition at 26 °C that points to potential conformational and dynamic differences across this temperature. The non-Arrhenius behavior observed resembled results from previous studies of a thermophilic alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme, which also indicated a biphasic transition at ambient temperatures. To explore the non-Arrhenius behavior of thermolysin, room temperature crystallography was applied to characterize structural changes in a temperature range across the biphasic transition temperature. The alternate conformation of side chain fitting to electron density of a group of residues showed a higher variability in the temperature range from 26 to 29 °C, which indicated a change in conformational sampling that correlated with the non-Arrhenius break point.

Aim: To evaluate the role of dynamic lymphoscintigraphy with a same-day protocol for sentinel node biopsy in oral cavity cancer., Methods: Twenty-two consecutive patients affected by cT1-2N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity were enrolled between September 2001 and November 2005. After a local anaesthetic (10% lidocaine spray), a dose of 30-50 MBq of Tc human serum albumin nanocolloid, in ml saline, was injected superficially (1-2 mm subendothelial injection) into four points around the lesion. Dynamic lymphoscintigraphy was acquired immediately (256x256 matrix, 5 min pre-set time, LEGP collimator) in lateral and anterior projections. The imaging was prolonged until the lymph nodes of at least two neck levels were visualized (time required min). About 3 h later (same-day protocol) the patients had a radioguided sentinel node biopsy. Elective neck dissection was performed in the first 13 patients; whereas the last nine patients had elective neck dissection only if the sentinel node was positive. Sentinel nodes were dissected into 1 mm thick block sections and studied by haematoxylin & eosin staining and immunohistochemistry (anticytokeratin antibody)., Results: The sentinel nodes were found on the 1st neck level in 13 cases, on the 2nd neck level in eight cases, and on the 3rd neck level in one case (100% sensitivity). The average number of sentinel nodes was 2.2 for each patient. The sentinel node was positive in eight patients (36%); with six of them having the sentinel node as the exclusive site of metastasis. No skip metastases were found in the 14 patients with negative sentinel node (100% specificity)., Conclusion: Our preliminary data indicate that superficial injections of radiocolloid and dynamic lymphoscintigraphy provide a high success rate in sentinel node identification in oral cavity cancers. Dynamic lymphoscintigraphy helps in distinguishing sentinel node from second-tier lymph nodes. The same-day protocol is advisable in order to correctly identify the first sentinel node, avoiding multiple and unnecessary node biopsies, without reducing sensitivity.

Infectious diseases represent a limiting factor for the further development of Italian aquaculture. The recent introduction and spreading of new pathogens, along with the global climatic change, has contributed to a considerable decrease in trout production. Emerging pathologies in rainbow trout culture include viral diseases, e.g. infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN), bacterial diseases, such as lactococcosis and visceral flavobacteriosis, and parasitical diseases, e.g. proliferative kidney disease (PKD). Higher mortality rates in trout fry and fingerlings are generally induced by visceral flavobacteriosis and IHN, while the main losses in large trout during the warm season are due to lactococcosis and PKD. Mariculture has at present a better sanitary status compared to trout culture, but a rapid dissemination of pathogens, including zoonosis agents, is envisaged also for seabass and seabream. Emerging pathologies in sea bass include VNN, pseudotuberculosis, streptococcosis and tuberculosis. Seabream is much more resistant and is mainly affected by novel Vibrio infections and enteromyxidiosis. A good sanitary management of fish farms is essential for avoiding or limiting losses caused by emerging pathologies. Transmission of zoonosis agents to man, through the consumption of cultured fish, is very remote in Italy. On the contrary, transmission of Streptococcus iniae, Vibrio vulnificus and Mycobacterium marinum by means of improper manipulation of infected fish, could represent a potential hazard for fish farmers and fish processors, as well as for people preparing fish meals.

Control cases from the broad group of non-neurotic but potentially analyzable patients appear with increasing frequency. The intense, complex transferences they develop place great stress on the psychoanalytic relationship and evoke marked countertransference reactions in psychoanalytic candidates, which reverberate within the supervisory relationship. Through application of a case study method, common themes emerge in the candidate-supervisor dyad: idealization of the supervisor and of classical technique, identification with the patient, parallel process enactments, difficulty maintaining the analytic frame, and the importance of concurrent training analysis. Classical supervisory techniques must be adapted to the "difficult" (non-neurotic) control case. Complex countertransference issues must be carefully addressed while maintaining the teach/treat boundary.

The purpose of this review article is to summarize the epidemiology, pertinent anatomy, mechanisms of injury, and classification systems of occipital condylar fractures (OCFs), as well as their clinical presentation and screening, the importance of computed tomography (CT) for detection, and current treatment options. The authors emphasize the rate of occurrence of OCFs, which may be detected in as many as 16% of patients with craniocervical injury. Clinical presentation is not specific, and OCF is not readily diagnosed at physical examination. Failure to diagnose may result in substantial morbidity, and thus accurate diagnosis is mandatory for both therapeutic and medicolegal implications. The diagnosis is most likely to be made with CT. Thin-section CT technique is the method of choice to evaluate the traumatized craniocervical junction. OCFs should be suspected in all patients sustaining high-energy blunt trauma to the head and/or upper cervical spine, resulting from axial loading, lateral bending and/or rotation, and/or direct blow. Besides a CT study assessing potential intracranial injuries, these patients require CT of the craniocervical junction. Radiologists should be aware of the types of OCFs and associated injuries.

The differentiation between normal sequelae and complications of any surgical treatment of the lumbar spine is of the utmost importance. Clinical and radiological diagnosis is often difficult. Certainly the introduction of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has improved and refined the diagnostic possibilities, however not all problems have been resolved. For example, the frequent resort in vertebral surgery to metal implants which may limit or even prevent the interpretation of CT or MR images, should be kept in mind. The main types of surgical procedures involving the lumbar spine are briefly reviewed, focusing on CT and MRI appearance of normal sequelae of early or late complications and the recurrence of the lesion that necessitated the first procedure.

Recent advances achieved in Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment and procedures allow a thorough study of the heart, yielding anatomic, functional and angiographic information. Spin-echo sequences are specific for heart morphology while gradient-echo sequences are fundamental to the functional study. Fast sequences reduce the examination times with the possibility of single breath-hold images. Coronary arteries can be directly visualized and cardiac perfusion can be assessed. Velocity encoded images allow flow quantification and with myocardial tagging, cardiac mechanics is accurately defined.

In the last decade an increase in the incidence of tuberculosis has been observed, due in part to the growing number of AIDS-patients. Musculoskeletal involvement is observed in 1-3% of tuberculosis cases. Aim of this article is to describe the diagnostic imaging of musculoskeletal tuberculosis and in particular the diagnostic potentialities of conventional radiology, CT and MRI. The role of MRI in the early identification of vertebral infectious process, in the determination of its locoregional extension and sometimes in its characterization, is underlined. In peripheral osteoarticular tuberculosis both CT and MRI do not supply additional diagnostic information as compared to conventional radiology; the tuberculous process is of difficult differentiation from other degenerative, inflammatory or neoplastic processes; in any case very careful attention is mandatory to establish an early diagnosis.

We have studied the effect of Mg deficiency on both tissue mineral content and liver oxidative status. Male Wistar rats kept for eight weeks on a Mg-deficient diet (Mg 152ppm) quickly developed a severe plasma Mg deficiency (73% decrease). The content of Cu and Fe significantly increased in different tissues following the treatment. Liver glutathione, CuZn-superoxide dismutase, and vitamin E were significantly reduced (by about 16%, 18% and 30% respectively). Lipid peroxidation, induced in vitro by NADPH/ADP-Fe3+ and measured as MDA formation, increased by about 100% after 20 min incubation in liver microsomes isolated from Mg-deprived rats. The alterations found in the content of transition metals and in the level of both cytosolic and membrane antioxidants, as well as the higher sensitivity of liver microsomes to lipid peroxidation in vitro, are consistent with an oxidative stress occurring in vivo in the tissues of Mg-deficient animals.

NAD pyrophosphorylase (ATP:NMN adenylyltransferase) activity has been measured in the skeletal muscle of dystrophic mice. The amount of this enzyme in the dystrophic mice, as determined by three different methods, was about one half of that in the controls. In addition, the concentration of ATP was too low to be detected in crude extracts of dystrophic mouse skeletal muscle, which were prepared using Tris buffer alone or Tris buffer containing either 3 M KCl, or 1 mM PMSF.

The folk medical tradition ascribes to Inula viscosa (a suffrutescent plant of Compositae widely spread along the Mediterranean basin) balsamic, antipyretic, antiphlogistic and antiseptic properties. Pharmacological test on rabbits, made hyperpyretic in laboratory, gave satisfactory antipyretic results. Gas chromatographical separation from a high-boiling fraction of seven azulenes, two of them identified as 1,4-dimethyl-azulene (about 50% and chamazulene (32%), confirmed the antiphlogistic action ascribed to the plant. By the present research (solvent extraction, thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography are described in detail) eucalyptol was identified in a fraction of essential oil obtained from fresh leaves of the plant. This datum supports the balsamic and antiseptic properties of Inula viscosa Ait.
