Recent theoretical and practical research has focused on multi-component High Entropy Alloys (HEAs), which have superior mechanical and functional properties than standard alloys based on a single major element, thereby establishing a new field. A multi-component HEA contains five or more primary elements at concentrations ranging from 5 to 35 atomic percent. We examined the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiVCoNiMn2 HEA. The mixing enthalpy and other thermodynamic parameters were determined using Meidma's model. TiVCoNiMn2 exhibits a mixing enthalpy of -15.6 kJ/mol and an atomic radius mismatch of approximately 10.03%. HEA is derived from both hydride and non-hydride-producing elements. We study the stroboscopic non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of periodically kicked Hamiltonians involving homogeneous central-spin interactions. The system exhibits a strong fragmentation of Hilbert space into four-dimensional Floquet-Krylov subspaces, which oscillate between two disjointed two-dimensional subspaces and thus break the discrete time-translation symmetry of the system. Our analytical and numerical analyses reveal that fully polarized states of the satellite spins exhibit fragmentations that are stable against perturbations and have high overlap with Floquet eigenstates of atypically low bipartite entanglement entropy (scar states). We present evidence of robust time-crystalline behavior in the form of a period doubling of the total magnetization of fully polarized satellite spin states that persists over long time scales. We compute non-equilibrium phase diagrams with respect to a magnetic field, coupling terms, and pulse error for various interaction types, including Heisenberg, Ising, XXZ, and XX. This paper addresses intervention-based causal representation learning (CRL) under a general nonparametric latent causal model and an unknown transformation that maps the latent variables to the observed variables. Linear and general transformations are investigated. The paper addresses both the identifiability and achievability aspects. Identifiability refers to determining algorithm-agnostic conditions that ensure recovering the true latent causal variables and the latent causal graph underlying them. Achievability refers to the algorithmic aspects and addresses designing algorithms that achieve identifiability guarantees. By drawing novel connections between score functions (i.e., the gradients of the logarithm of density functions) and CRL, this paper designs a score-based class of algorithms that ensures both identifiability and achievability. First, the paper focuses on linear transformations and shows that one stochastic hard intervention per node suffices to guarantee identifiability. It also provides partial identifiability guarantees for soft interventions, including identifiability up to ancestors for general causal models and perfect latent graph recovery for sufficiently non-linear causal models. Secondly, it focuses on general transformations and shows that two stochastic hard interventions per node suffice for identifiability. Notably, one does not need to know which pair of interventional environments have the same node intervened. Electromagnetic wave coupling between photonic systems relies on the evanescent field typically confined within a single wavelength. Extending evanescent coupling distance requires low refractive index contrast and perfect momentum matching for achieving a large coupling ratio. Here, we report the discovery of photonic supercoupling in a topological valley Hall pair of waveguides, showing a substantial improvement in coupling efficiency across multiple wavelengths. Experimentally, we realize ultra-high coupling ratios between waveguides through valley-conserved vortex flow of electromagnetic energy, attaining 95% coupling efficiency for separations of up to three wavelengths. This demonstration of photonic supercoupling in topological systems significantly extends the coupling distance between on-chip waveguides and components, paving the path for the development of supercoupled photonic integrated devices, optical sensing, and telecommunications., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Ceramics based piezoelectric generators are known for their high energy density and poor flexibility. In this work, v_r-PMN-0.3PT/PDMS 2-2 composite with optimum PMN-0.3PT content (v_r) was designed that demonstrated enhanced output energy density and superior mechanical flexibility under dynamic mechanical excitation. v_r-PMN-0.3PT/PDMS 2-2 composite with different PMN-PT reinforcement content (v_r) and two different reinforcement configurations were fabricated and characterized for effective electro-elastic properties and energy harvesting response. Parallelly, using the finite element method and analytical models, effective electromechanical properties were calculated. Composites with parallel connectivity of the reinforcement phase demonstrated enhanced piezoelectric charge coefficient even with low PMN-0.3PT content whereas the relative permittivity and elastic modulus exhibited a linearly increasing trend with reinforcement volume fraction. At a compressive load of 50 N and 5 Hz frequency, a piezoelectric generator (PG) based on a v_r = 0.2, v_r- PMN-0.3PT/PDMS 2-2 composite with parallel connectivity produced a maximum short-circuit current density of 69 nA/cm2 and an open-circuit electric field of 189 V/cm, translating to a maximum output power density of ~13 {\mu}W/cm3 higher than that of pristine PMN-0.3 PT based piezoelectric generator. Estimated mechanical flexibility was found to be ~53 % higher than that of pristine PMN-0.3PT.

This paper presents a method to stabilise oscillations occurring in a mixed convective flow in a nearly hemispherical cavity, using an actuation modelled on the receptivity map of the unstable mode underpinning these oscillations. This configuration represents a simplified model inspired from the continuous casting of metallic alloys where hot liquid metal is poured at the top of a hot sump with cold walls pulled in a solid phase at the bottom. The model focuses on the underlying fundamental thermo-hydrodynamic processes without dealing with the complexity inherent to the real configuration (Flood & Davidson 1994). This flow exhibits three branches of instability (Kumar & Poth{\'e}rat 2020). By solving the adjoint eigenvalue problem for the convective flow equations, we find that the region of the highest receptivity for the unstable modes of each branch tends to concentrate near the inflow upper surface. Simulations of the linearised governing equations then reveal that a thermo-mechanical actuation modelled on the adjoint eigenmode suppresses the unstable mode over a finite time, after which it becomes destabilising. Based on this phenomenology, we apply the same actuation for the duration of the the stabilising phase only in the nonlinear evolution of the unstable mode. It turns out that the stabilisation persists, even when the unstable mode is left to evolve freely after the actuation period. Besides demonstrating the effectiveness of receptivity-informed actuation for the purpose of stabilising convective oscillations, these results potentially open the way to a simple strategy to control them during arbitrarily long periods of time.

We demonstrate the emergence of collective spin modes with hyperbolic dispersion in three-dimensional spin-orbit coupled polar metals magnetized by intrinsic ordering or applied fields. These particle-hole bound states exist for arbitrarily weak repulsive interactions; they are optically accessible and can be used to generate pure spin current when magnetization is tilted away from the polar axis. We suggest material hosts for these excitations and discuss their potential relevance to nanoscale spintronic and polaritonic applications., Comment: Main text: 7 pages, 2 figures. Fine-tuning language models~(LMs) on human-generated data remains a prevalent practice. However, the performance of such models is often limited by the quantity and diversity of high-quality human data. In this paper, we explore whether we can go beyond human data on tasks where we have access to scalar feedback, for example, on math problems where one can verify correctness. To do so, we investigate a simple self-training method based on expectation-maximization, which we call ReST$^{EM}$, where we (1) generate samples from the model and filter them using binary feedback, (2) fine-tune the model on these samples, and (3) repeat this process a few times. Testing on advanced MATH reasoning and APPS coding benchmarks using PaLM-2 models, we find that ReST$^{EM}$ scales favorably with model size and significantly surpasses fine-tuning only on human data. Sampling from the posterior distribution poses a major computational challenge in solving inverse problems using latent diffusion models. Common methods rely on Tweedie's first-order moments, which are known to induce a quality-limiting bias. Existing second-order approximations are impractical due to prohibitive computational costs, making standard reverse diffusion processes intractable for posterior sampling. This paper introduces Second-order Tweedie sampler from Surrogate Loss (STSL), a novel sampler that offers efficiency comparable to first-order Tweedie with a tractable reverse process using second-order approximation. Our theoretical results reveal that the second-order approximation is lower bounded by our surrogate loss that only requires $O(1)$ compute using the trace of the Hessian, and by the lower bound we derive a new drift term to make the reverse process tractable. Our method surpasses SoTA solvers PSLD and P2L, achieving 4X and 8X reduction in neural function evaluations, respectively, while notably enhancing sampling quality on FFHQ, ImageNet, and COCO benchmarks. In addition, we show STSL extends to text-guided image editing and addresses residual distortions present from corrupted images in leading text-guided image editing methods. Valley Hall photonic crystals (VPCs) offer the potential to create topological waveguides capable of guiding light through sharp bends on a chip. They can seamlessly integrate with functional components while occupying minimal space, making them a promising technology for terahertz (THz) topological photonic integrated circuits. However, a significant limitation for THz-scale integrated VPC-based devices has been the absence of arbitrary bend interconnects. Due to the crystalline symmetry, the traditional VPC designs restrict waveguides to the principal lattice axes (i.e., only 0-, 60- or 120- degree orientations). Here, we present an on-chip, all silicon implementation of deformed VPCs enabling topological waveguides with a variety of shapes and bends. Although the lattice is amorphous and lacks long-range periodicity, the topological protection of the waveguides is sustained by short-range order. We experimentally demonstrate the robust on-chip transmission of THz waves through waveguides of complicated shapes and arbitrary bends. We implement an amorphous lattice that serves as a frequency-dependent router capable of splitting the input signal into two perpendicular output ports, which cannot be achieved with an undeformed VPC. In addition, we showcase on-chip THz communication through 90 degree and P-shaped VPC waveguides, achieving data rates of 72 Gbit/s and 32 Gbit/s, respectively.
