A toolbox for peat meadows weighs the different interests in the area. This study shows the opportunities for such a toolbox. Het doel van deze studie is het verkennen van de mogelijkheden van een toolbox voor de melkveehouderij in het veenweidegebied. De melkveehouderij is een belangrijke speler in het veenweidegebied. Een toolbox zou de effecten van peilbeheer en van bedrijfsvoering van melkveehouders op de diverse belangen in beeld moeten brengen. Bij de afweging worden niet alleen de belangen van melkveehouders, maar ook de belangen van andere stakeholders in het veenweidegebied meegewogen. Dit rapport is een voorstudie en rapporteert of een dergelijke toolbox zin heeft en zo ja, hoe deze valt in te richten. In de toelichting wordt het effect van maatregelen op de emissie van broeikasgassen uitgelicht.

Klimaatverandering werkt via hogere temperaturen, veranderingen in neerslagpatronen, veranderingen in frequentie en intensiteit van weersextremen en zeespiegelstijging door op het functioneren van het landgebruik en het watersysteem in het landelijk gebied. De doorwerking van de hierboven genoemde klimaateffecten is complex en verschilt tussen gebieden en verschillende vormen van landgebruik. Klimaatverandering bedreigt sommige functies maar biedt ook nieuwe kansen. Om deze kansen te benutten en de bedreigingen het hoofd te bieden is klimaatadaptatie nodig. Adaptatiemaatregelen in het landelijk gebied kunnen genomen worden binnen de verschillende sectoren en binnen het water-, natuur-, landbouw- en ruimtelijke ordeningsbeleid. Er is een samenhangend pakket van maatregelen nodig. Dit noemen we een integrale adaptatierichting. Deze studie onderzoekt mogelijke adaptatierichtingen voor verschillende landschapstypen; zeekleigebied, veenweide en de hoge zandgronden.

In het kader van het onderzoeksprogramma 'Klimaat voor ruimte' zijn op het melkveeproefbedrijf Zegveld in de periode 2005 – 2009 meer dan 6800 fluxmetingen uitgevoerd. De metingen hebben tot doel meer inzicht te verkrijgen in de ruimtelijke en temporele variabiliteit van de lachgasfluxen op perceelsniveau. De resultaten van de metingen op Zegveld tonen aan dat verhogen van de grondwaterstand waarschijnlijk leidt tot een lagere cumulatieve N2O-emissies. maar een stijging van de temporele en ruimtelijke variabiliteit. Voor kwantificering van de N2O-emissies moet daarom gebruik worden gemaakt van modelschattingen. Om de modellen te kunnen valideren en kalibreren zijn meer datasets nodig zoals met dit onderzoek is opgebouwd. De meetgegevens van dit onderzoek zijn vrij beschikbaar gesteld op internet

Fermentation is a promising development in agriculture and beyond and anticipates to the desired availability of (locally produced) renewable sources of energy to replace fossil sources of energy. Vergisten is een perspectiefvolle ontwikkeling in de landbouw en daarbuiten en speelt in op de gewenste beschikbaarheid van (lokaal geproduceerde) hernieuwbare bronnen van energie ter vervanging van fossiele bronnen van energie.

This report contains a complete description of the Dutch Greenhouse gas calculations and reporting of the LULUCF sector used for the 2011 submission

This report collects all background information that is used for the 2011 submission under the Kyoto Protocol (KP) for the Netherlands. It includes the full text of the National Inventory Report (NIR)-II for LULUCF, as well as a description of the table-bytable methodologies, choices and motivations. In 2009 afforestation and reforestation activities produced a sink of 546.68 Gg CO2 equivalents while deforestation caused an emission of 780,45 Gg CO2 equivalents. These values were based on changes in above- and belowground biomass, dead wood, litter and soil (mineral as well as organic), and agricultural lime application on deforested areas. The values for 2008 were recalculated from last year, and the recalculation included changes due to: (i) This was the first year emissions from mineral and organic soils were reported for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Deforestation (ARD). (ii) An error in harvested wood was corrected, and (iii) The calculation of dead wood was improved. Some minor gaps remain to be solved in the coming year(s), especially for the estimation of uncertainty of all reported values.

Land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) is an inventory sector defined by the Intergovern-mental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that covers anthropogenic emissions and removals of GHGs resulting from changes in terrestrial carbon stocks. The EU has committed unilaterally to reduce its overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 20 % be-low 1990 levels by 2020, and to 30 % below 1990 levels if conditions are right.

Co-digestion has attracted increased attention in The Netherlands as a result of a subsidy for electricity that is produced environmentally safe (MEP and SDE subsidy). Production of bio-energy by means of co-digestion turned financially profitable due to this financial support. Co-digestion is the simultaneous digestion of manure and a co-substrate and its conversion into biogas. We report on a methodology to assess the sustainability of bio-energy from co-digestion with emphasis on energy and green house gases (GHG) (Zwart et al., 2006). We have analyzed three cases, i.e. animal manure only or maize only and a mixture of 50% manure and 50% maize. On the basis of the gross ‘green gas’ and electricity production we calculated efficiencies according to the suggestions cf. Commission Cramer (Anon., 2007). We report that digestion of manure only is most efficient in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Digestion of maize without manure produces most energy. In terms of efficiency cf. Commission Cramer a mixture of manure and maize is most efficient. This is more efficient than digestion of maize alone as here emissions of greenhouse gases during crop production limits the efficiency cf. Commission Cramer.

Binnen het project Klimaat voor Ruimte is gekeken of de broeikasgasemissies in het landelijke gebied beïnvloed kunnen worden. Onderzocht is of mitigatie mogelijk is door emissies terug te dringen in de veenweidegebieden en door de vastlegging van koolstof in bossen te verhogen. Daarnaast is bepaald wat de effecten zijn van het Nederlandse landgebruik in de toekomst (scenario’s) op de broeikasgasemissies.

An important but little understood aspect of bioenergy production is its overall impact on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. Increased energy production from biomass will inevitably lead to higher input of its by-products to the soil as amendments or fertilizers. However, it is still unclear how these by-products will influence microbial transformation processes in soil, and thereby its greenhouse gas (GHG) balance and organic C stocks. In this study, we assess C and N dynamics and GHG emissions following application of different bioenergy by-products to soil. Ten by-products were selected from different bioenergy chains: anaerobic digestion (manure digestates), first generation biofuel by-products (rapeseed meal, distilled dried grains with solubles), second-generation biofuel by-products (nonfermentables from hydrolysis of different lignocellulosic materials) and pyrolysis (biochars). These by-products were added at a constant N rate (150 kg N ha-1) to a sandy soil and incubated at 20 °C. After 60 days, >80% of applied C had been emitted as CO2 in the first-generation biofuel residue treatments. For second-generation biofuel residues this was approximately 60%, and for digestates 40%. Biochars were the most stable residues with the lowest CO2 loss (between 0.5% and 5.8% of total added C). Regarding N2O emissions, addition of first-generation biofuel residues led to the highest total N2O emissions (between 2.5% and 6.0% of applied N). Second-generation biofuel residues emitted between 1.0% and 2.0% of applied N, with the original feedstock material resulting in similar N2O emissions and higher C mineralization rates. Wereldwijd wordt steeds sterker gepleit voor een verschuiving naar duurzame ontwikkeling. De bewustwording hiertoe werd al lang geleden ingezet door onder andere Rachel Carson in het boek Silent Spring (1962) en de Club van Rome in haar rapport Limits to Growth (1972). In het streven naar verduurzaming van onze activiteiten is recentelijk een nieuw concept naar voren gebracht: Cradle to Cradle (C2C). Vooral in Nederland heeft dit concept veel politici, wetenschappers, ondernemers en het publiek ertoe gebracht na te denken over de praktijk van C2C. Het gaat om vragen als: hoe we producten ontwerpen, produceren, gebruiken en vervolgens opnieuw gebruiken in plaats van ze te dumpen of te vernietigen. Met onder meer projecten rondom de stad Almere, de ontwikkeling van een Happy Shrimp Farm en de opzet van de Floriade door de gemeente Venlo heeft het concept snel ingang gevonden. Het blijkt echter niet gemakkelijk te zijn om in de praktijk de toepassing van C2C op industriële productieprocessen te realiseren.

Nederland wil klimaatbestendig worden. De discussie gaat vooral over waterbeheer en waterbeleid als instrumenten om onze samenleving aan te passen aan het veranderende klimaat. De voorgestelde maatregelen zijn daarmee sterk gericht op het watersysteem van Nederland. Maar ook de Nederlandse bodem biedt mogelijkheden voor het beheersen van de gevolgen van klimaatverandering. In dit artikel geven experts van relevante kennis- en onderzoeksinstituten enkele voorbeelden.

11 páginas, 3 figuras, 3 tablas., Central to the EU thematic strategy for soil protection is that areas affected by soil degradation through erosion, soil organic matter (SOM) decline, compaction, salinization and landslides should be identified in a clear and consistent way. However, the current methodologies to achieve this often differ and this can result in different perceptions of risks amongst EU Member States. The aims of this paper are to: (i) assess the current status of assessment methodologies in Europe (EU27) associated with erosion, SOM decline, compaction, salinization and landslides and (ii) discuss the issues associated with harmonization of these methodologies throughout the EU27. The need for harmonization is assessed using the relative share of common elements between different methodologies. The results demonstrate that the need for harmonization in methodology is greatest for erosion and compaction and least for SOM decline and landslides. However, many of the methodologies which were investigated are still incomplete and there are significant differences in terms of: (i) understanding the threats, (ii) methods of data collection, (iii) processing and interpretation and (iv) risk perception. We propose two options for the harmonized assessment of soil threats: (i) a two-tiered approach based on data availability and spatial scale and (ii) a combination of standardization and harmonization for each assessment methodology. Future assessments should focus on the advantages and disadvantages of these options as the current situation will result in endless discussions on differences and the merits of particular methodologies instead of taking appropriate measures to reduce or eliminate the actual threats., This study was part of the RAMSOIL project on harmonization of RAMs for soil threats. The global demand for agricultural products, including food, is rapidly increasing due to population growth and shifts in consumption patterns. The required increase in agricultural production is predominantly to be achieved in countries with relatively low agricultural production levels at present. These are mainly developing countries and countries in transition, the so-called non-Annex I countries of the UNFCCC. However, intensification of agricultural production systems is currently closely linked to high emissions of greenhouse gases notably nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4). In this paper the relations between population growth, agricultural development and emissions of N2O and CH4 were assessed for 10 non-Annex I countries, viz. China, India, Vietnam, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Mongolia, Nigeria, Tanzania and South Africa. We combined FAO data on agricultural production levels, CENSUS data on population statistics and EDGAR data on N2O and CH4 emissions. The projected trends in agricultural production indicate that emissions of N2O and CH4 are expected to increase rapidly in the coming years and will level off from 2040 onwards. The results confirm the positive relation between population increase and increased emissions from agricultural activities for most countries. However, for some countries (South Africa, China and Mexico) this relation was weak or absent. Although numerous factors (e.g. changes in international trade) may have scattered the relation and we were unable to explain this decoupling, it suggests that population growth can be possible without additional emissions. The variation between the different countries and farming systems is however large and mitigation measures at farm-level should be tailored to the wide diversity in environmental conditions, regional customs and farming systems. De mondiale emissies van CO2 zijn de afgelopen jaren substantieel gestegen. Een afbuiging van deze trend lijkt noodzakelijk, wil de concentratie in de atmosfeer niet te hoog oplopen. De internationale gemeenschap probeert die te realiseren door stevige reductiedoelstellingen vast te stellen voor de komende tien tot dertig jaar. De inspanningen zijn gericht op terugdringen van emissies, compensatie van de uitstoot door afvang en opslag van CO2 en de omschakeling naar een duurzame energievoorziening.

Fertiliser and manure applications on grassland are important sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. This paper assesses strategies to reduce N2O emissions from fertiliser and manure application on grassland, either by reducing the amounts of applied nitrogen and carbon, or by preventing the simultaneous availability of fertiliser nitrate and manure carbon to prevent detrimental interactions. Three mitigation options were tested in three consecutive years on a sandy soil in the Netherlands: (i) application of ammonium based fertilisers, (ii) split fertiliser applications and (iii) separate application of fertiliser and manure. The observed N2O emission factors for the calcium ammonium nitrate were rather low: 0.52%, 0.17% and 0.12% of applied N, in the three consecutive years. Application of ammonium sulphate and split application of calcium ammonium nitrate resulted in a significant reduction of emissions in the first year. In the second and third year however, none of the mitigation strategies resulted in a lower emission. It is concluded that choice of fertiliser type and timing can reduce N2O emissions, but solid recommendations on when to apply these strategies are still lacking.

Observations on trends in soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils is an important basis for mandatory reporting of emission of greenhouse gases from land use. A decrease indicates that these soils are a source of CO2, an increase that they are a sink. IPCC Good Practice Guidance generally assumes that the SOC content of agricultural soils decreases. We evaluated large datasets on trends in SOC in the Netherlands and compared them with datasets from Belgium, England and with literature in general. Also, the soil organic matter simulation model Century was used for a better understanding of soil processes related to manure application and SOC dynamics. The IPCC assumption of decreasing SOC contents was not confirmed for Dutch agricultural soils: on soils with SOC

The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report of 2007 (AR4), today, still offers a solid scientific base for climate policy-making. However, there are risks that climate change may happen faster - or may have more severe impacts – than expected. Therefore, it is recommended to increase climate monitoring efforts, and investigate policy response options addressing these risks.

Het doel van deze nulmeting is het kwantificeren en het ruimterlijk in beeld brengen van de broeikasgasemissie uit de Gelderse land- en tuinbouw en het landgebruik bos voor de jaren 1990 (referentiejaar voor Kyoto) en 2005. De informatie is uitgesplitst voor de verschillende agrosectoren (melkveehouderij, vleesveehouderij, vleeskalverhouderij, varkenshouderij, pluimveehouderij, overige veehouderij, akkerbouw en vollegrondstuinbouw en glastuinbouw). Op basis van deze uitkomsten wordt een trendanalyse gerapporteerd van de te verwachten emisies en er worden een aantal emissiebeperkende maatregelen doorberekend voor de drie agrosectoren met de hoogste broeikasgasemissie

This report contains a full description of revisions and updates of the Dutch Greenhouse gas calculations and reporting of the LULUCF sector used for the 2009 submission. Parts were earlier described in Nabuurs et al. (2003, 2005), De Groot et al (2005), Kuikman et al. (2003; 2005) and Van den Wyngaert et al. (2007, 2008). An overview of the history of this system since its development is given in chapter 2. This system has been reviewed by an external expert (Van den Wyngaert et al., 2007) and by several UNFCCC review teams. The outcomes of the 2007 in country review indicated several areas of possible improvement. This led to a series of proposed improvements in 2008, which were implemented for the 2009 submission. As some of the comments indicated a limited transparency of the system to the reviewers, this report does not limit itself to the changes but described the full system as it is now after the improvements. A comprehensive overview is given of how land use information was classified into the 6 IPCC land use categories (Forest Land, Cropland, Grassland, Wetland, Settlements and Other land) in chapter 3. The chapter concludes with a table indicating all Dutch land use classes and how they relate to the IPCC categories. For the 2009 submission, and updated land use matrix was calculated and motivated. In Kramer et al. (2009) the full process of the new land use matrix is described in detail, and this is summarized in chapter 4. Additionally, the overlay of the land use maps and a soil carbon map, as well as a peat soil map, is discussed in chapter 4. In chapters 5 and 6 the calculations related to Forest Land as well as land conversion to and from Forest land are described. Updates related to previous submissions include: • Use of the complete inventory cycle for the MFV dataset (2001-2005). • Synchronizing of harvest data with FAO statistics. • Update of the assumptions underlying the calculation of carbon emissions related to conversion of land to Forest Land (par 5.3.1, see also Annex D). • Carbon emissions from deforestation are based on annual simulated mean carbon stocks in biomass. • Carbon in litter is fully emitted when Forest land is converted to another land use category.

Dit rapport presenteert een beknopt overzicht van de stand van zaken (state-of-the-art) in het nationale en internationale onderzoek naar de relatie van klimaatverandering en bodem en van de mogelijkheden om de bodem te gebruiken voor slimme en effectieve adaptatie aan klimaatverandering in Nederland. De analyse is gericht op alle typen bodems die in Nederland voorkomen en omvat zowel natuurlijke en kunstmatig gevormde bodems, bodems in en onder bebouwd gebied en (onder)waterbodems

Veranderingen in klimaat zullen gevolgen hebben voor gewasopbrengsten en op termijn zal ook de veehouderij als geheel gevolgen ondervinden. In deze korte notitie worden mogelijke effecten geïnventariseerd en per sector aangegeven hoe hierop te reageren. Deze notitie maakt onderdeel uit van "Wegen naar een klimaatbestendiger Nederland" (studie van Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving)

Dit rapport beschrijft de gevolgen van een verminderde aanvoer van nutriënten voor de lange termijn bodemvruchtbaarheid als gevolg van aanscherping van normen. In dit rapport ligt de nadruk op eventuele gevolgen voor de fosfaattoestand en de organische stofvoorraad van de bodem. De studie maakt gebruik van inzichten, modellen en bestaande gegevens uit lange termijnproeven. Modellen gebaseerd op lange termijnproeven zijn nodig om effecten op de bodemvruchtbaarheid van verminderde aanvoer op lange termijn te voorspellen. Geconcludeerd wordt dat de huidige modellen in veel gevallen onvoldoende zijn om kwantitatief goede voorspellingen te doen. Studies om te komen tot betere modellen zijn geïnventariseerd. Gezien de hoge fosfaattoestand (hoge Pw) op het grootste deel (85%) van het Nederlandse landbouwareaal verwachten we geen negatieve effecten van de toepassing van evenwichtsbemesting voor fosfaat op de bodemvruchtbaarheid op middellange termijn tot 2015. Ondanks de verwachting dat aanscherping van de mestnormen zal leiden tot aanvoer van minder organische stof en mogelijk tot een geringe daling van organische stof in de bodem is er geen reden om te vrezen voor de bodemvruchtbaarheid.

Nederland heeft zich (in het kader van het Kyoto protocol) verplicht om de uitstoot van broeikasgassen te verminderen ten opzichte van het referentiejaar 1990. Wat betreft de veehouderij sector heeft de film 'Meat the Truth' van de Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD) het vraagstuk eind 2007 op de agenda geplaatst. In die film wordt de relatie tussen veehouderij en klimaat behandeld. De feitelijke basis voor de film wordt vooral gevormd door het rapport Livestock's Long Shadow (Steinfeld, FAO, 2006)

This report contains the overview of the process of updates and revisions after the 2007 review that has led to the current Dutch National System for Greenhouse gas reporting of the LULUCF (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forests) sector. It also gives a complete description LULUCF part of the system as in force for the submission of 2008.

The Routeplanner project aims to provide a ‘systematic assessment’ of potential adaptation options to respond to climate change in the Netherlands in connection to spatial planning. The study is the result of a policy oriented project that took place between May and September 2006. The aim of the current study is to provide a ‘qualitative assessment’ of the direct and indirect effects of adaptation options and to provide an assessment of some of the costs and benefits of adaptation options. The present report presents and summarizes the results of all phases of the study: an inventory of adaptation options, a qualitative assessment of the effects of the adaptation options for the Netherlands in the long run, a database which allows to rank the various options according to a set of criteria and a relative ranking on the basis of these criteria. Finally the report also contains the best available information on costs and benefits of various adaptation options

This report contains the updates and improvements that have been made in the Dutch National System for Greenhouse gas Reporting of the LULUCF (Land Use, Land Use Change and Forests) sector. These updates are incorporated in the submission of 2006.

Vergisting en co-vergisting van dierlijke mest staan sterk in de belangstelling van de agrarische sector en kunnen een bijdrage leveren aan het verminderen van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen en het halen van de Kyoto doelstelling van Nederland. In dit project zijn richtlijnen opgesteld voor de beoordeling van de milieueffecten van co-vergisting van mest. Op basis van deze richtlijnen is een transparante, eenvoudige en robuuste systematiek uitgewerkt. Deze beoordeling van de algemene milieuverdienste is breder dan alleen de emissie van broeikasgassen CO2 en CH4. Ook ruimtelijke en landschappelijke aspecten zijn van belang. Een dergelijke beoordeling is noodzakelijk om zinvolle keuzes in energie- en klimaatbeleid in relatie tot landbouw te maken. De belangrijkste conclusie over duurzaamheid van co ¿ vergisting: duurzamer dan vergisting van mest alleen, is energetisch duurzamer naarmate het aandeel co ¿ substraat groter wordt maar er zijn dan wel meer emissies van het lachgas (N2O) maar wel met een netto vermindering van broeikasgassen. Voor een bijdrage 10% aan de vraag naar elektriciteit in Nederland is bijna de helft van het huidige akkerland nodig

Het internationale klimaatverdrag van de Verenigde Naties en het Kyoto-protocol verplichten de Nederlandse overheid te rapporteren over de koolstofvoorraad in de bodem als functie van het landgebruik en over veranderingen hierin. Wij werken drie alternatieve strategieën voor monitoring van (veranderingen in) de C-voorraad uit, op basis van de verschillende internationale eisen en randvoorwaarden en de specifieke Nederlandse situatie ten aanzien van bodemgesteldheid, landgebruik en beschikbaarheid van gegevens.

Emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) in the Netherlands are reported to the UNFCCC on the basis of a country specific methodology. In this study we have identified and analysed the values for emission factors in measurement from in the Netherlands in the period 1993 – 2003. The overall averaged emission factor extracted from over 86 series of one year measurements on nitrous oxide emission from agricultural fields in the Netherlands is 1.1% and a weighed average for soil types is 1.01%. The average for mineral soils is 0.88%. The calculated emission factors are lower than the value suggested by the IPCC for EF1 for fertilizer and animal manure of 1.25%. We recommend to use a value of 1.0% for EF1 and to use corrections of EF1 in reporting the use of fertilizers without nitrate (0.5%), for subsurface application of manure (1.5%) and for fertilizer, manure and urine on organic soils (2.0%)

IPCC (2001) indicates that climate change will take place despite the mitigation strategies that are going to be implemented. This calls for adaptation strategies in order to reduce the vulnerability to climate change. The aim of this project was to make a policy assessment to contribute to a more thorough understanding of the adaptation options, their costs and benefits and the policy conclusions that could be attached to the results. The study is based on literature reviews, consultation of stakeholders and the design and implementation of a database with various options, and a first sketch of their incremental costs and benefits, either in quantitative of qualitative terms, and as far as current information allows. The study also pays attention to the institutional aspects by analyzing the role of the actors involved and the barriers and opportunities for implementing adaptation options.

Als gevolg van de MINAS ¿ wetgeving zijn de mestgiften in Nederland gedaald en hierdoor is ook de emissie van de overige broeikasgassen sterk verminderd in de periode 1995 - 2005. Gedwongen door de EU zal Nederland het mest- en mineralenbeleid en mestwetgeving aanpassen en daarbij gebruik maken van de onlangs onder voorwaarden toegekende derogatie. Deze quick ¿ scan geeft inzicht in de mogelijke en waarschijnlijke effecten van dat nieuwe mestbeleid op de emissies van methaan en lachgas bij toepassing van de gehonoreerde derogatie. Het nieuwe mestbeleid en de derogatie leidt tot een kortdurende toename van de emissie van lachgas doordat er ruimte ontstaat voor meer gebruik van stikstofkunstmest bij aanvang van het mestbeleid (2006). Verscherpte normering richting 2009 en aanpassingen in de landbouwsector kunnen tezijnertijd weer zorgen voor een daling van de emissie van methaan en lachgas. Het uiteindelijke effect van invoering van het nieuwe mestbeleid in 2006 is een daling van de emissie met 0 tot 0.3 Mton CO2-equivalenten ten opzichte van de situatie in 2003. Deze daling is aanmerkelijk minder sterk dan de daling die tot nu toe werd voorzien.

Deze studie inventariseert recente inzichten over organische stof in de bodem en inventariseert kennisvragen en -leemtes. De aandacht gaat uit naar mogelijke veranderingen en verlies van organische stof, daarmee samenhangende risico's , mogelijke reacties en waarnemingen van effecten van handelen. According to the international agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change the Netherlands has to report emissions of greenhouse gases periodically to the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn in a national inventory. Such an inventory should be based on internationally comparable methodologies, be public and transparent, include all sources and removals by sinks of all greenhouse gases. This report is on calculations for a specific source (management of organic soils) of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) that is not reported according to international standards and partly missing in the National Inventory Report for the Netherlands. The total area of organic soils is calculated at 223 000 ha in 2003 based on inventories. The area will continue to decrease further. The calculated annual emission of CO2 amounts to 4.246 Mton CO2 and for N2O to 0.508 Mton CO2 equivalents

Metingen van de landelijke steekproef kaarteenheden (LSK) in combinatie met de bodemkaart 1: 50.000 leveren de meest geschikte meetdata om de C voorraad nauwkeurig te berekenen. Om het aandeel van de C voorraad van elk landgebruik in een willekeurig jaar te berekenen heeft het Historisch Grondgebruik Nederland (HGN) de voorkeur boven de bestanden van LGN
