Abstract

The time interval between the Emsian (Early Devonian) and the end of the Permian is characterized by the rapid evolution of the Ammonoidea, and this evolution is reflected by the establishment of a detailed biostratigraphical scheme. Ammonoids are, together with the conodonts, the most important stratigraphical tools for this interval. The present time resolution in terms of ammonoid biostratigraphy is highest in the Devonian (one zone has a mean of 0.9 Ma) and in the Carboniferous (about 1 Ma), while the subdivision of the Permian is much coarser (about 2.5 Ma per ammonoid zone on average).

Abstract

Research always requires the use of a common language and particularly of common technical terms. Thus, the definition of terms is fundamental for any scientific work, and this includes also the definition of species. In this chapter, we do not discuss species concepts but provide a guideline on how to describe ammonoids in a manner that is intelligible to the majority of the fellow cephalopod-workers. Accordingly, we list the most important terms and describe how to quantify and how to properly use them. We stress that the inclusion of morphological details throughout ontogeny as well as information on intraspecific variability can be important. This is essential, because species are the classical unit used in biodiversity and evolutionary studies and hence, a more or less uniform handling of this issue is desirable.

Abstract

The phragmocone with its more or less complexly folded septa characterize the ammonoid clade and contribute much to the aesthetic appearance of these fossils. However many contradicting opinions and models on septum formation and as explanation for the evolution and function of sutural complexity and septal frilling have been published. We review the main hypotheses namely the Viscous Fingering Model the Tie Point Model and the application of the Reaction Diffusion Model to the morphogenesis of ammonoid septa. In that context we discuss contradictions and present a compound model including a revised chamber formation cycle. Additionally the highly complex septa of lytoceratids are dis cussed in greater details with respect to septum formation and the evolutionary meaning of suture lines and septum morphology.
