Abstract

We report observations of two negative polarity gigantic jets sufficiently near very high‐frequency (VHF) lightning mapping networks that the associated lightning characteristics and charge transfer could be investigated. In both cases the gigantic jet‐producing flash began as ordinary intracloud lightning with upper level channels attempting to exit the cloud, and then produced the upward gigantic jet. Neither flash had developed channels to ground, confirming that the major charge transfer during gigantic jets occurred between the cloud and ionosphere. The leader progression of one event was detected at altitudes above 20 km, demonstrating the possibility of detecting and tracking the propagation of negative jets above the cloud with VHF techniques., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Abstract

This grant supported the initial development of a deployable system for determining the structure of lightning discharges in three spatial dimensions and time. The purpose of this was to utilize the system to characterize lightning discharges that initiate sprites in the upper atmosphere. The grant also supported observations of sprites themselves using low-light-level video cameras and studies which identified charge transfer occurring within the sprite itself. This work resulted in the first high-speed video observations of sprites and the first recognition that significant charge transfer was occurring in sprites. Finally, it provided partial support for improving dual-polarization radar techniques for observing storms.

Abstract

The radar has been upgraded through improvements to the receiver and addition of an inexpensive PC-based Digital Signal Processing system to allow real-time processing and display of radar parameters. A Sun Microsystems SPARCstation was added to the system for processed data archive as well as post analysis. The radar system was shipped to Kennedy Space Center for electrification studies during the summer of 1991.
