Aim: To explore the profile of articles on traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in the primary dentition published in Dental Traumatology in the last 15 years using bibliometric analysis.Methods: Three researchers read all titles and abstracts of articles published in Dental Traumatology between 2000 and 2014 (excluding editorials and letters) and selected all articles on TDI in the primary dentition. The articles were categorized according to year of publication, country in which the study was conducted, study design, and topics addressed. Divergences were resolved by consensus between the researchers.Results: Among a total of 1257 articles published, 98 were initially excluded. Among the remaining 1159 articles, 152 (13.1%) focused on TDI in the primary dentition. The articles were conducted in 29 countries, with Brazil (38.8%) and Turkey (11.8%) accounting for the largest numbers. Cross-sectional studies (36.2%) and case report/case series (33.6%) were the most frequent study designs. Only two systematic reviews were published. The most commonly addressed topics were frequency/etiology/associated factors (36.8%), treatment (30.9%), and prognosis (19.7%). Among the articles addressing treatment, two-thirds were case reports or case series. The effects of TDI in primary teeth on their permanent successors were addressed in 20.4% of the articles (31/152).Conclusions: The number of articles on TDI in the primary dentition has increased, but remains low. The evaluation of study designs and topics addressed identified gaps that could contribute to the development of new studies on TDI in the primary dentition, especially cohort studies that evaluate risk factors, prognosis, and treatment. Oligodontia, or the congenital absence of teeth, can occur in isolation or as part of a syndrome. This study describes a case of isolated oligodontia associated with conical teeth and large diastemas in the anterior region. The patient was treated using direct composite resin restorations. Recent improvements in adhesive restorative materials allow practitioners to offer this low-cost, conservative esthetic treatment, which has the advantage of preserving sound dental structures, to patients with missing teeth. Objective: To test the hypothesis that malocclusion does not have an independent and negative effect on quality of life of adolescents. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional design study comprised a sample of 519 children, aged 11 to 14 years, attending public schools in Osorio, a city in southern Brazil. One calibrated examiner carried out clinical examinations and recorded dental caries (decayed/missing/filled teeth), malocclusion (Dental Aesthetic Index), and dental trauma. Participants completed the Brazilian version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14), Impact Short Form, and their parents or guardians answered questions about socioeconomic status. Simple and multivariate linear regressions were performed to assess covariates for the overall CPQ11-14 scores. Results: Greater impacts on oral health-related quality of life were observed for girls (P = .007), children with a lower household income (P = .016), those living in nonnuclear families (P < .001), and those with more decayed/missing/filled teeth (P = .001). Malocclusion was also associated with oral health-related quality of life: the severity of malocclusion was significantly related to higher scores of CPQ11-14 even after scores were adjusted for control variables. CPQ11-14 increased by approximately 1 point for each increase in the severity of malocclusion. Conclusions: Malocclusion has a negative effect on adolescents' quality of life, independent of dental caries or traumatic dental injuries. Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is one of the most significant disorders of the stomatognathic system because it causes pain associated with severe functional limitations, such as difficulty in chewing and psychological and clinical problems due to poor oral hygiene. These disorders are quite significant in children, since the treatment is even more complex due to the fact that the condylar region is a site of active growth. The earlier the diagnosis is established, the better the treatment prognosis. Ankylosis can be treated by interposition arthroplasty of the temporalis muscle fascia in conjunction with ipsilateral coronoidectomy. The purpose of the present study was to report a clinical case of temporomandibular joint ankylosis in a pediatric patient treated by interposition arthroplasty of the temporalis muscle fascia associated with coronoidectomy. Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome (SMMCIS) is a rare anomaly that affects 1 in 50,000 live births. Of unknown etiology, SMMCIS is characterized by the presence of a single central incisor located on the maxillary midline and may be associated with developmental defects and systemic alterations. SMMCIS also is associated with short stature, mild forms of deviation in craniofacial morphology, and intellectual disability. The purposes of this paper were to: describe the clinical case of an 8-year-old boy with a permanent central incisor located at the midline in association with holoprosencephaly; and highlight the most important aspects related to diagnosis and treatment of solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and anatomic characteristics of accessory foramina in the external and internal furcation areas of primary molars. Sixty human primary molars were divided into two equal groups. The teeth of the experimental group showed in previous radiographic examination the presence of a radiolucency area confined to the inter-radicular region, while the teeth of the control group had no sign of pulpal inflammation in the clinical and/or radiographic examination. The specimens were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The external furcation area (EFA) showed a higher prevalence of accessory foramina than the internal furcation area (IFA) (P<0.05). However, the comparison between the two groups did not show statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The presence of accessory canals should not be considered the only reason for inter-radicular pathological bone resorption following pulpal necrosis in deciduous molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present in vitro study assessed the correlation between clinical and interproximal radiographic examinations in diagnosing proximal caries of primary molars. A total of 223 mesial and distal surfaces, from 125 primary teeth, were evaluated clinically and radiographically. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between the increase of depth of radiolucency in radiographic examination and the clinical stage of lesions. The interproximal radiographic examination presented an excellent capability for discriminating surfaces with and without cavities in primary molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A nine-year-old boy suffered a severe facial trauma in a bicycle crash, which resulted in the avulsion and subluxation of upper central incisors. Teeth were repositioned and stabilized, attempting to achieve a successful replantation. Root resorption occurred, teeth were extracted, followed by orthodontic treatment, and esthetic procedures, modifying laterals and canines. This article reports an attempt and failure of replantation, providing alternatives for achieving patient's satisfaction, applying a variety of techniques and areas of dental profession. \nIntroduction: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a nutritional counseling program for mothers of newborns to prevent sugar consumption in the first year of life on the occurrence of early childhood caries (ECC). Methods: A multicentric randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov – NCT03841123) was conducted in three state capitals of Brazil (n = 516). Mothers were randomly assigned to the intervention group (IG) or control group (CG) after delivery. The IG received face-to-face nutritional counseling based on UNICEF dietary guidelines after delivery, followed by monthly phone calls. The CG received standard counseling. Dietary intake was measured through structured questionnaires and 24-h recalls at 6 and 12 months. Dental clinical examination for ECC diagnosis was performed by calibrated dentists after the children completed the first year of life. Results: The prevalence of ECC was 17.4% in the overall sample (49/290). The number of affected teeth ranged from 0 to 6 (mean 0.43). The IG had a 2.4 times probability of not consuming sugar in the first 6 months of life (RR 2.44; 95% CI: 1.18–5.00) and a significantly lower mean number of sweet items consumed at 12 months (p = 0.016). However, no significant differences between groups were found with regard to the occurrence of ECC (RR 1.33; 95% CI: 0.79–2.25) or the number of teeth affected by caries (p = 0.273). Conclusion: The intervention to prevent and reduce sugar intake in the first year of life was not effective at reducing the occurrence of ECC or the number of teeth with carious lesions. Teeth with cavities, known as dental caries, are widespread, affecting more than half of children in most countries. These cavities can cause significant discomfort, disrupting the routine of children and their parents’ lives, leading to sleep problems and work absences. The primary cause of these cavities is the frequent consumption of foods and drinks with added sugar, a practice that is not recommended before the child reaches 2 years of age. To address this issue, our study investigated the effect of advising mothers about healthy feeding practices during the first year of the child’s life on preventing caries and reducing sugar consumption at 6 and 12 months. Our findings showed that the nutritional guidance reduced sugar consumption significantly after comparing groups of mothers who received nutritional advice with those who did not. This cross-sectional study investigated the distribution of plaque and gingivitis and its association with demographic, socioeconomic, and orthodontic variables (spacing in anterior teeth, anterior open bite, and crossbite), and visible plaque level (low, medium, high) in Brazilian preschoolers. The sample comprised 490 3- to 5-year-old children from nursery schools in Canoas, a city in southern Brazil. One single, trained observer examined children's oral cavities and determined visible plaque index (VPI) and gingival bleeding index (GBI). Results showed that 99% of the children had visible plaque and 77% had gingivitis (GBI>0). A positive (rS=0.32) and significant correlation was found between VPI and GBI. VPI and GBI were significantly higher in posterior teeth and buccal and lingual surfaces. VPI was significantly higher in boys, children of low-income families, and without spacing in maxillary anterior teeth. Gingivitis was associated with absence of spacing in maxillary anterior teeth and plaque level. The most prevalent areas of plaque and gingivitis identified in this study should be taken in consideration during oral hygiene instructions, which should be given to children and mothers—particularly those with a low socioeconomic status—to motivate self-care and prevent gingivitis. Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was to assess bond strength of three self-etching and two total-etch adhesive systems bonded to primary tooth enamel and dentin., Materials and Methods: Forty extracted primary human molars were selected and abraded in order to create flat buccal enamel and occlusal dentin surfaces. Teeth were assigned to one of the adhesive systems: Adper Scotch Bond Multi Purpose, Adper Single Bond 2, Adper Prompt L-Pop, Clearfil SE Bond and AdheSE. Immediately to adhesive application, a composite resin (Filtek Z250) block was built up. After 3 months of water storage, each sample was sequentially sectioned in order to obtain sticks with a square cross-sectional area of about 0.72 mm2. The specimens were fixed lengthways to a microtensile device and tested using a universal testing machine with a 50-N load cell at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Microtensile bond strength values were recorded in MPa and compared by Analysis of Variance and the post hoc Tukey test (a = 0.05)., Results: In enamel, Clearfil SE Bond presented the highest values, followed by Adper Single Bond 2, AdheSE and Adper Scotch Bond Multi Purpose, without significant difference. The highest values in dentin were obtained with Adper Scotch Bond Multi Purpose and all other adhesives did not present significant different values from that, except Adper Prompt L-Pop that achieved the lowest bond strength in both substrates. Adper Scotch Bond Multi Purpose and Adper Single Bond 2 presented significantly lower values in enamel than in dentin although all other adhesives presented similar results in both substrates., Conclusions: contemporary adhesive systems present similar behaviors when bonded to primary teeth, with the exception of the one-step self-etching system; and self-etching systems can achieve bond strength values as good in enamel as in dentin of primary teeth.

Green pigmentation in teeth is an uncommon condition that is associated with bilirubin deposits in dental hard tissues. This article presents a case involving an 8-year-old girl with green teeth associated with intrinsic pigmentation by bilirubin. The reported case confirms the relevance of a medical history in establishing a diagnosis of green pigmentation.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disorder of the gastrointestinal tract in children and adults. The purpose of this report is to describe the case of a patient with GERD and the effects of the disease on the oral cavity, as well as to discuss functional and esthetic rehabilitation using composite resin. The authors also conducted a review of the literature on GERD etiopathogenesis, clinical signs and symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment.

The aim of this study was to assess the use of dental services and age at first dental visit in preschool children in Canela, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. A representative sample of under-five children was surveyed on National Children's Vaccination Day. Children's parents completed questionnaires containing socio-demographic data and age at first dental visit. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. 192 children were examined. 13.3% of the sample had already visited the dentist at least once, but only 4.3% had their first dental visit by one year of age. The number of children who had already visited a dentist increased with age. Girls showed higher odds of having visited a dentist (OR = 1.46; 95%CI: 1.01-2.1). Public health strategies are needed to determine the effectiveness of health promotion and improve the use of dental services by preschool children.

The present research has made a comparison between three distinct methods to evaluate carious activity in a community basis. The studied method was based in a modified DMFS/dmfs index including non-cavitated lesions. Two factors were analyzed: the possible reproduction of the inclusion of carious activity criteria and the presence of bacterial plaque. Thus, the three study groups presented with plaque, after supervised self-performed plaque removal with dental toothbrush and without plaque after professional prophylaxis, which corresponded to three diagnostic methods. The three exams took place one week apart from each other. For this analysis, a modified DMFS/dmfs index was proposed with alterations in diagnostic criteria due to the inclusion of carious activity parameters. The study was performed in a group of 30 children aged 11 years old. According to the results, the diagnostic method for carious activity in the three situations was reproducible and can be considered a proper approach to perform caries diagnosis in a community basis.

This study evaluate the marginal microleakage in deciduous molars cavities restored with ionomer cement modified by resin (Vitremer, 3 M) comparing two different techniques: the conventional (according to manufacturer instructions) and with the hybridization technique (acid phosphoric 37% and adhesive system Scotchbond Multi Pourpose , 3M). Proximal cavities were prepared in 20 sound deciduous molars, right after extraction. The samples were randomly divided in two groups. Group 1 consisted in teeth prepared with the conventional technique and in the group 2 teeth with etching by phosphoric acid and adhesive system. The teeth were submitted to termical cycle process (100 cycles, each one of 3 sub cycles of 5o C, 37o C and 55o C - by 60 Sec of bath immersion each one), after restorations. After that, the teeth were impermeable with nail polish and wax #7 keeping 2mm of area in the junction of the cervical restoration margin, and them immersed in methylen blue solution to 0,5% , seccionated and evaluated by one examiner, who established the microleakage degree. The data reveal the both techniques show the micro infiltration in different degree, but it has no statistical difference between techniques.
