- Abstract
We propose an open layered framework, which might be adapted to fulfill sophisticated demands in forensic handwriting analysis. Due to the contradicting requirements of processing a huge amount of different document types as well as providing high quality processed images of singular document classes, neither a standardized queue of processing stages and fixed parameter sets nor fixed image operations are qualified for such a framework concept. The open layered framework, proposed in this paper, provides adaptation abilities at the parameter level, the operator level and the algorithm level. Moreover, an embedded module that uses genetic programming might generate specific filters for background removal on the fly. In this paper the layered framework will be presented, aspects of the implementation and results of its application will be given.

A biometric system testifies the authenticity of a specific physiological or behavioral characteristic possessed by a user. New requirements for biometric systems such as robustness, higher recognition rates, tolerance for imprecision and uncertainty, and flexibility call for the use of new computing technologies. Soft- computing is increasingly being used in the development of biometric applications. Soft-biometrics corresponds to a new emerging paradigm that consists in the use of soft-computing technologies for the development of biometric applications. The aim of this paper is to motivate discussion on the application of soft-computing approaches to specific biometric measurements. The feasibility of soft-computing as a tool-set to biometric applications should be investigated. Finally, an application example on static signature verification is presented, providing evidence of the impact of soft-computing in biometrics.

- Abstract
This letter discusses the recent paper "Some technical remarks on the proof of the 'No Free Lunch' theorem," In that paper, some technical issues related to the formal proof of the no free lunch (NFL) theorem for search were given by Wolpert and Macready (1995 and 1997). As a result of a discussion among the authors, this letter explores the issues raised in that paper more thoroughly. This includes the presentation of a simpler version of the NFL proof in accord with a suggestion made explicitly by Koppen (2000) and implicitly by Wolpert and Macready (1997). It also includes the correction of an incorrect claim made by Koppen (2000) of a limitation of the NFL theorem. Finally, some thoughts on future research directions for research into algorithm performance are given.

- Abstract
The stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is presently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The plasma density profile will be measured by two-colour interferometry where for each line of sight through the plasma the phase shifts of two far-infrared laser beams are compared. Due to the 3D shape of the superconducting coils in W7-X, opposite ports are not available. Instead, corner cube retro-reflectors (CCR) will be incorporated in the plasma vessel heat shield that reflect the beams back to the entrance window and diagnostic. This requires high accuracy of the reflecting surfaces which will be subjected to thermal loads from plasma radiation and therefore be heated up, displaced and deformed during operation. ANSYS is used to perform coupled thermo-mechanical analyses of the CCR, including plasma radiation, thermal conduction, and radiation between all parts. The resulting displacements provide the inputs to MATLAB routines which then yield local deformations, curvature radii, and tilting of the reflecting surfaces. This information is used to optimize the design of the CCR and their fixations. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All Rights Reserved.

- Abstract
The internal load in humans caused by an external exposure is different in each person and mainly depends on metabolism. Using the recently proposed method of mnSOM we are able to describe the human metabolism using a functional module (linear or nonlinear) for each individual.mnSOM enables us to subdivide individuals into classes based on the functional description of each individuals metabolism. Furthermore the shown approach is able to show dependencies between external exposure and internal load in humans. In environmental epidemiology this will be used to establish links between external exposure and internal load patterns to gather clinical relevant information for practitioners.

Microwave stray radiation resulting from unabsorbed multiple reflected ECRH / ECCD beams may cause severe heating of microwave absorbing in-vessel components such as gaskets, bellows, windows, ceramics and cable insulations. In view of long-pulse operation of WENDELSTEIN-7X the Microwave STray RAdiation Launch facility, MISTRAL, allows to test in-vessel components in the environment of isotropic 140 GHz microwave radiation at power load of up to 50 kW/m2 over 30 min. The results show that both, sufficient microwave shielding measures and cooling of all components are mandatory. If shielding/cooling measures of in-vessel diagnostic components are not efficient enough, the level of stray radiation may be (locally) reduced by dedicated absorbing ceramic coatings on cooled structures. The following article concerns with some considerations and results in using neural networks for classification of textile materials. Advantages and disadvantages of using a backpropagation-classifier will be described by the help of an easy modelling of its functionality. In a practical example - surface inspection in textile materials - feature sets calculated from the co-occurrence-matrix are to be classified by a neural network. This proofs the possibility of using neural network in detection of distortions in industrial surfaces.

The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator fusion experiment is presently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald Germany. The W7-X machine has a superconducting magnet system with 50 non-planar and 20 planar coils grouped in five equal modules. The operation of the W7-X machine requires a reliable insulation system of the superconducting magnets. Starting in the design phase the components have to consider the insulation system, weak points of the insulation must be identified and countermeasures must be taken, e.g. for the crossings of conductors inside the windings, the shape of handmade insulated areas and the quench detection cable design. The manufacturing has to be based on qualified procedures and materials, e.g. the vacuum pressure impregnation of the glass epoxy insulation as well as the hand-made glass epoxy wrappings must be thoroughly qualified and tested during the whole manufacturing process. A set of accompanying tests, especially high voltage tests, during the manufacturing and assembly process helps to assure the quality of the insulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a new technique for the efficient generation of high-energy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in multi-ion plasmas. The discussed ‘three-ion’ scenarios are especially suited for strong wave absorption by a very low number of resonant ions. To observe this effect, the plasma composition has to be properly adjusted, as prescribed by theory. We demonstrate the potential of the method on the world-largest plasma magnetic confinement device, JET (Joint European Torus, Culham, UK), and the high-magnetic-field tokamak Alcator C-Mod (Cambridge, USA). The obtained results demonstrate efficient acceleration of 3He ions to high energies in dedicated hydrogen–deuterium mixtures. Simultaneously, effective plasma heating is observed, as a result of the slowing-down of the fast 3He ions. The developed technique is not only limited to laboratory plasmas, but can also be applied to explain observations of energetic ions in space-plasma environments, in particular, 3He-rich solar flares. The provision of a particle and power exhaust solution which is compatible with first-wall components and edge-plasma conditions is a key area of present-day fusion research and mandatory for a successful operation of ITER and DEMO. The work package plasma-facing components (WP PFC) within the European fusion programme complements with laboratory experiments, i.e. in linear plasma devices, electron and ion beam loading facilities, the studies performed in toroidally confined magnetic devices, such as JET, ASDEX Upgrade, WEST etc. The connection of both groups is done via common physics and engineering studies, including the qualification and specification of plasma-facing components, and by modelling codes that simulate edge-plasma conditions and the plasma-material interaction as well as the study of fundamental processes. WP PFC addresses these critical points in order to ensure reliable and efficient use of conventional, solid PFCs in ITER (Be and W) and DEMO (W and steel) with respect to heat-load capabilities (transient and steady-state heat and particle loads), lifetime estimates (erosion, material mixing and surface morphology), and safety aspects (fuel retention, fuel removal, material migration and dust formation) particularly for quasi-steady-state conditions. Alternative scenarios and concepts (liquid Sn or Li as PFCs) for DEMO are developed and tested in the event that the conventional solution turns out to not be functional. Here, we present an overview of the activities with an emphasis on a few key results: (i) the observed synergistic effects in particle and heat loading of ITER-grade W with the available set of exposition devices on material properties such as roughness, ductility and microstructure; (ii) the progress in understanding of fuel retention, diffusion and outgassing in different W-based materials, including the impact of damage and impurities like N; and (iii), the preferential sputtering of Fe in EUROFER steel providing an in situ W surface and a potential first-wall solution for DEMO.

For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the threeions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.
