58. Molecular Hydrogen in the Ring Nebula: Clumpy Photodissociation Regions

Abstract

We present a 0.?65 resolution H21-0 S(1) 2.122 ?m image of the Ring Nebula (NGC 6720), which was taken with the Near Infrared Imager at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope on Kitt Peak. The high resolution of the H2observation is sufficient to reveal the finer structure of the molecular material in this nebula. The morphology of the molecular emission is compared to that of the ionized emission from the Ring Nebula as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope(HST; Heii, [Oiii], and [Nii]), and it is clear that the dark clumps seen by HSTmatch the locations of clumpy H2emission, suggesting that these clumps are similar to the cometary knots seen in the Helix Nebula. As with the Helix, the clumpy H2emission from the main ring of the Ring Nebula is contained within the optically bright ionized nebula, implying that the molecular gas is shielded inside dense condensations. Comparison of the observed H2average surface brightnesses for the Ring Nebula [(1.5 ± 0.5) × 10-4ergs cm?2s?1sr?1] with time-dependent models of the expected H2emission from planetary nebulae (PNe) shows that it is consistent with H2excitation in photodissociation regions (PDRs), confirming previous suggestions. Comparison of the Ring Nebula H2emission with a younger PN, NGC 2346, and an older PN, the Helix Nebula, suggests an evolution in H2surface brightness consistent with the time-dependent PDR models. Moreover, the knots of molecular gas appear to become more isolated as the PN evolves, consistent with optical studies of knots in PNe.

59. Constraints on Cool Gas in Rich Clusters of Galaxies

Abstract

Cool gas should be present in galaxy clusters due to stripping of galactic gas, in-fall onto the cluster, and from cooling flows. We have searched for this gas through metal resonance absorption lines from low-ionization gas toward six background quasars. Both cooling-flow and non-cooling-flow clusters were observed, with lines of sight ranging from the inner to outer parts of the cluster (0.32 Mpc [?] rproj [?] 1.40 Mpc). The HST Faint Object Spectrograph observations failed to detect Fe II or Mg II absorption at the cluster redshift, with 1 s upper limits on the ion column densities of N [?] 1012-1013 cm-2. From existing X-ray data, we estimate that ram-pressure stripping of galactic gas by the intracluster medium should produce cool gas along these sight lines. The failure to detect absorption lines implies that any gas stripped in such a way has a low covering fraction, possibly due to a short lifetime in this low-ionization state.

60. Evolutionary Status of Dwarf "Transition" Galaxies

Abstract

We present deep B-band, R-band, and Ha imaging of three dwarf galaxies: NGC 3377A, NGC 4286, and IC 3475. Based on previous broadband imaging and H I studies, these mixed morphology galaxies have been proposed to be, respectively, a gas-rich low surface brightness Im dwarf, a nucleated dwarf that has lost most of its gas and is in transition from Im to dS0, N, and the prototypical example of a gas-poor "huge low surface brightness" early-type galaxy. From the combination of our broadband and Ha imaging with the published information on the neutral gas content of these three galaxies, we find that (1) NGC 3377A is a dwarf spiral, similar to those found by Schombert and coworkers and Matthews & Gallagher; (2) both NGC 3377A and NGC 4286 have comparable amounts of ongoing star formation, as indicated by their Ha emission, while IC 3475 has no detected H II regions to a very low limit; (3) the global star formation rates are at least a factor of 20 below those of 30 Doradus for NGC 3377A and NGC 4286; (4) while the amount of star formation is comparable, the distribution of star-forming regions is very different between NGC 3377A and NGC 4286, with Ha emission scattered over most of the optical face of NGC 3377A and all contained within the inner half of the optical disk of NGC 4286; (5) given their current star formation rates and gas contents, both NGC 3377A and NGC 4286 can continue to form stars for more than a Hubble time; (6) both NGC 3377A and NGC 4286 have integrated total B-R colors that are redder than the integrated total B-R color for IC 3475 and thus it is unlikely that either galaxy will ever evolve into an IC 3475 counterpart; and (7) IC 3475 is too blue to be a dE. We thus conclude that we have not identified potential precursors to galaxies such as IC 3475, and unless significant changes occur in the star formation rates, neither NGC 3377A nor NGC 4286 will evolve into a dwarf elliptical or dwarf spheroidal within a Hubble time. Furthermore, optical morphology, even when coupled with the knowledge of the neutral gas content of a dwarf galaxy, is not sufficient to determine its evolutionary phase. The evolutionary states of NGC 3377A and NGC 4286 are thus unclear and more complicated than might be inferred from either previous broadband imaging or H I content alone.
