Abstract

We present a preliminary risk analysis for the LHCb vertex locator (VELO). The scope of this risk analysis is to identify possible failure scenarios at the LHCb VELO and estimate the ensuing damage to equipment and downtime for LHC. Further, on the basis of a (preliminary) risk level for acceptability, we formulate requirements and suggest a number of precautions for the design of the VELO system.

Abstract

The pre-compression rings (PCRs) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) represent one of the largest and most highly stressed composite structures ever designed for long term operation at 4K. Three rings, each 5m in diameter and 337 × 288 mm in cross-section, will be installed at the top and bottom of the eighteen "D" shaped Toroidal Field (TF) coils to apply a total centripetal load of 70 MN per TF coil. The interaction of the 68 kA conductor current circulating in the coil (for a total of 9.1MA) with the required magnetic field to confine the plasma during operation will result in Lorentz forces that build in-plane and out-of-plane loads. The PCRs are essential to keep the stresses below the acceptable level for the ITER magnets structural materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Fusion for energy (F4E), the European Domestic Agency for ITER, is involved in a relevant number of activities in the area of electromagnetic analysis in support of ITER general design, and of specific requirement of the EU in-kind procurement. In this context, its main activity is linked with the electromagnetic analysis of several ITER components (blanket shield modules and first wall panels, blanket cooling manifolds. TBM port plug, etc.) subjected to electro-dynamical loads. Another important activity is related to the ITER superconducting magnets, namely the quench detection of the ITER TF coils and the joule losses in the magnets cold structures. Abstract

Error fields in Tokamaks are small departures of the exact axisymmetry of the ideal magnetic field configuration. Their reduction beyond a threshold value by the error field correction coils is essential since sufficiently large static error fields lead to discharge disruption. The error fields are originated not only by coils fabrication and installation alignment tolerances, joints and busbars but also due to the presence of ferromagnetic elements. The start of plasma current flattop with relatively low plasma density is considered as a critical state of the 15 MA scenario for the onset of locked modes causing disruptions. A figure of merit, the ‘3-mode’ criterion, based on the lowest error field harmonics [(1,1); (2,1); (3,1)] was chosen to assess the error fields expected in ITER. Analysis performed last years in an independent way by CREATE (EU) and Efremov Inst. (RF) groups has allowed a deep understanding of the error fields induced by all the possible sources. Both groups were successfully benchmarked with the estimation of the error fields induced by a given deformed shape of a TF coil obtaining a perfect match of the results up to 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the defined threshold of B3-mode/Bto [1] ).

"The Toroidal Field Coils (TFC) are subject to mandatory geometrical tolerances constraints for acceptance by ITER Organization. As a consequence, pre-assembly tests are foreseen to verify if each single coil meets such criteria, including laser tracking, and possibly warm magnetic measurements on each of the finished winding packs. Possible performance limitations of the acceptance tests for the winding pack are assessed in this paper. Since construction details are not presently known, the paper proposes an assessment of the mathematical and numerical tools able to perform the final evaluation of the actual feasibility of magnetic testings and discusses their performance in terms of accuracy and reliability.. Abstract

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) linear IFMIF prototype accelerator injector dedicated to high intensity deuteron beam production has been designed, built, and tested at CEA/Saclay between 2008 and 2012. After the completion of the acceptance tests at Saclay, the injector has been fully sent to Japan. The re-assembly of the injector has been performed between March and May 2014. Then after the check-out phase, the production of the first proton beam occurred in November 2014. Hydrogen and deuteron beam commissioning is now in progress after having proceeded with the final tests on the entire injector equipment including high power diagnostics. This article reports the different phases of the injector installation pointing out the safety and security needs, as well as the first beam production results in Japan and chopper tests. Detailed operation and commissioning results (with H(+) and D(+) 100 keV beams) are reported in a second article.

Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated a quality improvement program with a pay-for-performance (P4P) incentive in a population-focused, integrated care program for safety-net patients in 29 community health clinics., Methods: We used a quasi-experimental design with 1673 depressed adults before and 6304 adults after the implementation of the P4P program. Survival analyses examined the time to improvement in depression before and after implementation of the P4P program, with adjustments for patient characteristics and clustering by health care organization., Results: Program participants had high levels of depression, other psychiatric and substance abuse problems, and social adversity. After implementation of the P4P incentive program, participants were more likely to experience timely follow-up, and the time to depression improvement was significantly reduced. The hazard ratio for achieving treatment response was 1.73 (95% confidence interval=1.39, 2.14) after the P4P program implementation compared with pre-program implementation., Conclusions: Although this quasi-experiment cannot prove that the P4P initiative directly caused improved patient outcomes, our analyses strongly suggest that when key quality indicators are tracked and a substantial portion of payment is tied to such quality indicators, the effectiveness of care for safety-net populations can be substantially improved.

Abstract

The author believes that many forms of tinnitus are caused by a functional alteration in the efferent fibers of Ramussen, Galambos and Portmann. Due to the fact of this functional alteration, the noise is not stopped by this filter and the patient has acoustic impressions caused by organic noises, probably vascular noises in the temporal bone. There is also reported an important improvement in subjective disturbances with personal auditory training.
