Abstract

For flow visualization study of quantum turbulence in superfluid 4 He, He 2 ∗ excimers are unique tracers which follow only normal-fluid component flow above 1 K. To generate detectable small He 2 ∗ clouds (clusters) required for full-space velocity field measurements, we have adopted a new method based on neutron absorption reaction of 3 He impurities in 4 He and conducted proof-of-principle experiments. Generation of the He 2 ∗ excimers was detected by laser-induced fluorescence using photomultiplier tubes. The fluorescence was observed to increase proportionally to the neutron flux, suggesting that a sufficient amount of He 2 ∗ excimers were generated by neutrons. We also estimated the number of He 2 ∗ excimers possibly generated by γ -rays and found that the relevant contribution was less than 40%. Thus, the majority of the He 2 ∗ excimers was confirmed to be generated via n- 3 He absorption reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to investigate low-energy excitations below 10 meV, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements have been carried out on various organic amorphous polymers at 10 and 50 K and three inorganic glasses at 150 and 295 K. It was found that a broad excitation peak is observed for all amorphous materials in the ω range of 1.5–4.0 meV irrespective of different chemical structures. On the other hand, highly crystalline polyethylene with a degree of crystallinity 0.96 shows no such broad peak, indicating that the low-energy excitation is characteristic of amorphous materials. We have employed an asymmetric double-well potential as a common origin for the low-energy excitation in amorphous materials and analyzed the results of amorphous polyisobutylene to confirm validity of this model and alternatively to determine parameters of the potential. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the inelastic-scattering intensity of the low-energy excitation leads to a concept of phonon-assisted tunneling in the asymmetric double-well potential. Abstract

We studied the energy resolution of the pulsed neutron beam of the Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction Measurement Instrument (ANNRI) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex/Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (J-PARC/MLF). A simulation in the energy region from 0.7 meV to 1 MeV was performed and measurements were made at thermal (0.76-62 meV) and epithermal energies (4.8-410 eV). The neutron energy resolution of ANNRI determined by the time technique depends on the Lime structure of the neutron pulse. We obtained the neutron energy resolution as a function of the neutron energy by the simulation in the two operation modes of the neutron source: double- and single bunch modes in double bunch mode, the resolution deteriorates above about 10 eV because the time structure of the neutron pulse splits into two peaks. The time structures at 13 energy points from measurements in the thermal energy region agree with those of the simulation. In the epithermal energy region, the time structures at 17 energy points were obtained from measurements and agree with those of the simulation. The FWHM values of the time structures by the simulation and measurements were found to be almost consistent. In the single-bunch mode, the energy resolution is better than about 1% between 1 meV and 10 keV at a neutron source operation of 17.5 kW. Abstract

Methane hydrate has a unique structure that the host water framework forms two kinds of cages, which contain one methane molecule each. Therefore, it has been expected that there may exist three kinds of translational modes of a methane molecule and also the distortion of translational mode of host water molecules compared with normal ice. We need information of the host and guest molecular dynamics over the wide momentum and energy transfer region for studying such dynamics. In this study inelastic neutron measurements were carried under 40 K with MARI spectrometer at ISIS in UK, TAS at JRR-3 and CAT at KENS in Japan. For the methane molecular motion we could confirm its freelike rotation by complementary use of MARI and TAS spectra. After the subtraction of the scattering intensity of the rotation evaluated by the free rotation model from the experimental data, three kinds of translation modes were identified at first experimentally. On the experimental spectra there still remains the excess intensity which could not explain the single mode excitation. The libration mode of the water framework shows the different momentum and energy transfer dependence with those of normal ice. The feature of the libration mode is resemble to ice-IX, that could be considered as a proton ordering of the cage structure appeared in ice-II, VIII and IX.

Abstract

A high resolution imaging device for cold neutrons detection has been constructed for the neutron optics (nop) Group in RIKEN, and tested with thermal neutrons at the Laue-Langevin Institute in Grenoble. It consists of a thin plate of ZnS(Ag)+6LiF scintillator optically coupled with Y11(400) wave-length shifting (WLS) fibres. The space resolution was found to be ~ 0.45 mm in FWHM as expected from the pitch of WLS fibres with a crossection of 0.4 ´ 0.4 mm2. The detection efficiency for thermal neutrons (l = 2.5 ) was estimated with respect to 3He monitor, and found to be ~ 10 %, which ensured a reasonable efficiency for cold neutrons (l = 10 ).

Abstract

We have a plan to build an imaging beam line, ERNIS (Energy-Resolved Neutron Imaging System), at MLF (Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility) at J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). In pulsed neutron imaging, we use characteristic features of the neutron total cross section, depending on the neutron wavelength, to get sample information such as crystallographic structure and nuclide composition. One of the most important items to be determined for a beam line at J-PARC is the choice of moderator among coupled, decoupled, and poisoned moderators. From the wavelength resolution point of view, we decided to use the decoupled moderator, which could cover major experiments performed at a pulsed neutron source. Here, we discuss the structure of the imaging beam line at beam line 22 of the J-PARC neutron source as well as the arrangement of insertion devices and the experimental area.

Abstract

We are developing a fiber type two-dimentional (2-D) position-sensitive detector having a spatial resolution less than 0.5 mm in order to use it in the time-of-flight (TOF) measurements. The detector performance was examined, and some experiments on the TOF radiography were performed using this detector. The results indicated that the detector could be applied successfully to the TOF measurement and that the TOF radiography was very useful since it gave more informative data than those obtained by the conventional radiography using a broad energy band.
