62. Association between buccal mucosa ridging and oral feature/symptom and its effects on occlusal function among dentate young adults in a cross-sectional study of Japan.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the distinction in oral features/symptoms and occlusal function between young dentate individuals with and without buccal mucosa ridging (BMR). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 200 young adults. The outcome variable was BMR state. The predictor variables were oral features/symptoms (torus palatinus, torus mandibularis, temporomandibular joint noise, bruxism, tongue thrusting habit, number of teeth present, and occlusal vertical dimension) and oral function (occlusal force, occlusal contact area, occlusal pressure, tongue pressure). These variables were compared among participants with and without BMR using univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: There were 119 participants with BMR and 81 without BMR. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that BMR was closely associated with bruxism, occlusal vertical dimension, and occlusal pressure. Discussion: Oral/occlusal changes of increased bruxism, lower occlusal vertical dimension, and lower occlusal pressure constitute the major causes of BMR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

71. Role of Researcher/Academia in making low carbon policy: UK

Abstract

Fukushima accident in Japan triggered the discussion worldwide on the role of science and its relation with policy. Based on their experience of BSE, UK has developed the institutional mechanism to solve this problem for the past couple of decades. This study focuses on the role of Researcher/Academia in making low carbon policy in the UK. UK researchers and universities can enjoy high a relatively high degree of independence of their research from the government due to its stature that guarantees its independence. One of the reasons is that ”the Halden Principle” requires higher research education to be independent from the government in the UK. In addition to this robust institutional support, there was a recent movement for evidence-based policy in the UK, which requires more economic and scientific robustness, therefore role of engineers and social scientists are increasingly important. Social science has not been focused that much, but it will have a greater role in changing people’s behavior with high level of uncertainty. UK businesses have played a leading role to move forward the climate policy such as UKETS as well as low carbon policy. The regular communication and consultation is a crucial basis for making integrated policy, which involves wide range of stakeholders. Involvement of citizens, on the other hand, is rather limited and their role should be considered further as the focus of low carbon policy moves to change of behavior. Climate Change Act 2008 sets out a framework that will put UK on the path to become a low-carbon economy, with clear, legally binding targets to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 60% (later increased to 80%) by 2050, and 26% (later increased to 34%) by 2020 below 1990. These legally binding targets required structural change of the government to implement the necessary policies and measures especially by the integrating climate and energy policy.

72. Two cases of traumatic bladder rupture with multiple organ failure

Abstract

We report two cases of traumatic bladder rupture complicated by multiple organ failure (MOF). The first patient had an extraperitoneal bladder rupture and right femoral bone fracture, which were treated conservatively. However, intrapelvic abscess and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which was caused by fat embolism resulted in MOF. The second patient who had been under treatment for malignant lymphoma for three years had an intraperitoneal bladder rupture with ruptures of spleen, intestine and diaphragm. We closed the defects in the bladder, intestine, diaphragm and performed splenectomy. We also provided suprapubic cystostomy and a urethral catheter. However, wound abscess and hepatic failure occurred postoperatively. She died of MOF 20 days after the operation. We stress that in the treatment of bladder rupture, intensive chemotherapy for infection must be done when there are complications of other visceral injuries.
