73. Magnetic anisotropy and magnetic ordering of transition-metal phosphorus trisulfides

Abstract

Here, a magnetic model with an unprecedentedly large number of parameters was determined from first-principles calculations for transition-metal phosphorus trisulfides (TMPS$_3$'s), which reproduced the measured magnetic ground states of bulk TMPS$_3$'s. Our Monte Carlo simulations for the critical temperature, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat of bulk and few-layer TMPS$_3$'s agree well with available experimental data and show that the antiferromagnetic order of FePS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$ persists down to monolayers. Remarkably, the orbital polarization, which was neglected in recent first-principles studies, dramatically enhances the magnetic anisotropy of FePS$_3$ by almost two orders of magnitude. A recent Raman study [K. Kim et al., Nat. Commun. 10, 345 (2019)] claimed that magnetic ordering is absent in monolayer NiPS$_3$ but simultaneously reported a strong two-magnon continuum; we show that the criterion used to judge magnetic ordering there is invalid in monolayer NiPS$_3$, thus providing an understanding of the two seemingly contradictory experimental results. 88. Maintaining Score Scales over Time: A Comparison of Five Scoring Methods

Abstract

This study evaluates various scoring methods including number-correct scoring, IRT theta scoring, and hybrid scoring in terms of scale-score stability over time. A simulation study was conducted to examine the relative performance of five scoring methods in terms of preserving the first two moments of scale scores for a population in a chain of linking with multiple test forms. Simulation factors included 1) the number of forms linked back to the initial form, 2) the pattern in mean shift, and 3) the proportion of common items. Results showed that scoring methods that operate with number-correct scores generally outperform those that are based on IRT proficiency estimators ([theta]) in terms of reproducing the mean and standard deviation of scale scores. Scoring methods performed differently as a function of patterns in a group proficiency change.

Abstract

Methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) are major carriers of atmospheric bromine and chlorine, respectively, which can catalyze stratospheric ozone depletion. However, in our current understanding, there are missing sources associated with these two species. Here we investigate the effect of copper(II) on CH3Br and CH3Cl production from soil, seawater and model organic compounds: catechol (benzene-1,2-diol) and guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol). We show that copper sulfate (CuSO4) enhances CH3Br and CH3Cl production from soil and seawater, and it may be further amplified in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or solar radiation. This represents an abiotic production pathway of CH3Br and CH3Cl perturbed by anthropogenic application of copper(II)-based chemicals. Hence, we suggest that the widespread application of copper(II) pesticides in agriculture and the discharge of anthropogenic copper(II) to the oceans may account for part of the missing sources of CH3Br and CH3Cl, and thereby contribute to stratospheric halogen load.

99. Development and Application of a Novel Engineering-Based Maker Education Course for Pre-Service Teachers

Abstract

This study aimed to raise awareness of maker education for pre-service teachers and discuss maker education in their major subjects by developing and applying a maker education course for pre-service teachers with various majors based on novel engineering (NE), a teaching and learning method that combines humanities and engineering. Accordingly, the course was developed following the procedure of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model, and the educational effectiveness was investigated using test tools. The educational effect and difficulties were also examined through the analysis of reflective journals written by 20 pre-service teachers with various majors who participated in the course. To investigate the educational effectiveness of the developed course, the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) literacy of the participants--before and after the course--was measured, with the results demonstrating a statistically significant improvement. Analysis of the reflective journals identified a recognition of sharing effectiveness, the joy of making, and an in-depth understanding of maker education as education effects, and a lack of understanding of techniques, the burden of prototype fabrication, and the limitation of majoring subjects as difficulties experienced during the activities. This study verified that NE could be used as a significant maker education measure for pre-service teachers with various majors. Based on this verification, this study also proposes a strategy to develop more effective NE-based maker education.
