ResultsThe oral administration of rebamipide decreased plaque formation in atherosclerotic lesions as well as the markers of metabolic disorder in ApoE-deficient mice with atherosclerosis. Pro-inflammatory cytokines were also suppressed by rebamapide. In addition, the population of Th17 was decreased, whereas Treg was increased in the spleen of rebamipide-treated ApoE deficient mice. Rebamipide also ameliorated the severity of obese arthritis and has the capability to reduce the development of atherosclerosis by controlling the balance between Th17 and Treg cells. Thus, rebamipide could be a therapeutic agent to improve the progression of inflammation in metabolic diseases.

BackgroundTo correlate parameters of Ultrasonography-guided Diffuse optical tomography (US-DOT) with pharmacokinetic features of Dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI and pathologic markers of breast cancer.MethodsOur institutional review board approved this retrospective study and waived the requirement for informed consent. Thirty seven breast cancer patients received US-DOT and DCE-MRI with less than two weeks in between imaging sessions. The maximal total hemoglobin concentration (THC) measured by US-DOT was correlated with DCE-MRI pharmacokinetic parameters, which included K(trans), k ep and signal enhancement ratio (SER). These imaging parameters were also correlated with the pathologic biomarkers of breast cancer.ResultsThe parameters THC and SER showed marginal positive correlation (r = 0.303, p = 0.058). Tumors with high histological grade, negative ER, and higher Ki-67 expression ≥ 20% showed statistically higher THC values compared to their counterparts (p = 0.019, 0.041, and 0.023 respectively). Triple-negative (TN) breast cancers showed statistically higher K(trans) values than non-TN cancers (p = 0.048).ConclusionTHC obtained from US-DOT and K(trans) obtained from DCE-MRI were associated with biomarkers indicative of a higher aggressiveness in breast cancer. Although US-DOT and DCE-MRI both measured the vascular properties of breast cancer, parameters from the two imaging modalities showed a weak association presumably due to their different contrast mechanisms and depth sensitivities.

This study examines an extra-curricular English course that gives a chance for the low-proficient seniors who have not yet met the graduation qualification to graduate upon completion of 90 hours of English program. The subjects were 14 seniors who failed to obtain the minimum requirement scores and had to complete the course in summer of 2014. A total of 5 sets of the TOEIC mock-tests were administered to see if the subjects made any progress in each test after providing lectures on the tips to improve listening skills and test scores. The study analyzed the results of the TOEIC L/C, subjects' translation sheets and the questionnaire at the end of the course. Subjects' personality factors were mainly focused for the study. The affective domain by Krathwohl, Bloom, and Masia (1964) was adopted to investigate the subjects' learning factors along with their motivation. Based on the results of the study, the extra-curricular English course seemed ineffective as the subjects' perception of the course was extremely nonchalant without any desire and motivation to learn. Their willingness to learn English was practically non-existent in each class presumably partly due to the lenient nature of the course and pressure to focus on their national qualification exam. It is recommended to provide a more practical course that includes testing the students and that reinforces a learning environment. The course is advised to be offered in the 3rd year so during the senior year, students can put in their effort on more urgent priority such as national nursing test and/or national biomedical laboratory science test.

This study examines 29 journal abstracts that were completed reviews for publication in the year 2012. It was done to investigate the number (percentage) of abstracts that involved with errors, the most erroneous part of the abstract, and the types and frequency of errors. Also the purpose expanded to compare the results with those of the previous study done on error analysis of abstracts in 2007. This comparison was to check if the corrective feedback on the abstract in the past several years played any role in reducing errors. The parts which had most errors were methods (79%) and results (76%), respectively. Throughout all four parts, purpose, methods, results, and conclusion, using the wrong words (expressions) was the most troublesome type of errors. Preposition errors, omission and addition of words along with some miscellaneous errors decreased compared to the results of 2007 study. Giving corrective feedback on the abstract during the past years might have helped the researchers in nursing profession reduce errors since some of them continuously submitted research papers to the same journal and some others may have referenced the previously published abstract prior to their submission. It is advised to provide L2 learners with corrective feedback so that they can notice, understand errors and build cognitive error correction processes. (Contains 4 tables.)

Recent research on African legislatures, once considered rarely autonomous, has found that some broad-scale mass movements, including pro-poor campaigns, hold legislators accountable. This article meanwhile examines the conditions under which narrow local constituency issues, shaping partisan differences, can hold relevant representatives and parties accountable while prioritizing over executive pressures and clientelist personal gains. I argue that this sort of political accountability in legislatures can be observed concerning sectoral policy interests, which, in Africa, are often geographically concentrated along ethnicity and party support lines. Drawing on a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches including interviews, news coverage reviews, and a statistical analysis of legislative debates on the 2019 Sugar Bill in Kenya, I show that the growing and collective efforts of sugar farmers to influence their local representatives and parties to support the legislation, tying them to the same electoral fate, prompt legislators to speak in favor of their local interests. This implies that sector-based policy concerns, when addressed by organized policy backers, are used as an effective mechanism for maintaining party unity and accountability in the legislature. Research on violent extremism in Africa argues that jihadi insurgents exploit inter-ethnic cleavages and local grievances in order to recruit and gain support from the region because such political mobilisation leads to an escalation of clashes and violence among communal groups. On the other hand, local militias, especially those aided by governments, incite acts of anti-government terrorists. Using the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) data set, we explore at which duration-area level the jihadist and militia attacks affect each other's atrocities and how the effects vary in three Francophone Sahelian countries—Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. We find that violent acts by militias (or jihadists) tend to be reactive to terrorist attacks (or militia movements) rather than happening concurrently or against one another. More specifically, violent incidents by jihadi insurgents and local militias have an aggravating effect on each other's violent acts in sub-regional administrative units over a week at the highest rate in Mali and Burkina Faso. Further, results from a cross-country analysis suggest that homegrown factors, including terrorist group rivalry, government responses to terrorism and self-defence militias' intentions and determination, might affect how the jihadists' exploitation of the cleavages and the growing challenges posed by ethnic militias to the extremists exacerbate the situation.
