53. Best Practices to Support Student Behavior

Abstract

The "No Child Left Behind Act" mandates that teachers employ evidence-based practices (EBPs) in the classroom in order to improve student performance. For students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) to be successful, particularly in inclusive settings, the most salient practices would probably be those promoting classroom organization and sound behavior management. However, data suggest that many teachers feel that they are insufficiently prepared to handle challenging behaviors. While disciplines such as psychology and medicine have attempted to identify effective practices from scientific evidence, the field of special education is arguably more challenging. The complexities of special education and its research base include such factors as the often extreme variability of participants in research investigations, the overrepresentation of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals in special education, and the low prevalence of some disability types, to name only a few. All of these are barriers to setting specific evaluation criteria or benchmarks that can be used broadly to identify EBPs. Despite these challenges, a number of processes have been undertaken to identify EBPs in the field of special education in order to support teachers and their students in the classroom. While controversies and disagreements about what constitutes "evidence-based" continue, a number of organizations have developed lists of practices they promote as evidence-based. One result of this is a number of Web-based technical assistance networks or centers. The Federal Resource Center for Special Education (FRC) provides assistance to state education agencies in order to improve programs, practices, and policies affecting children and youth with disabilities. The FRC also supports six Regional Resource Centers throughout the country, and collaborates with the Technical Assistance and Dissemination (TA&D) Network, funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs. This article provides a sampling of the types of resources available, including a brief description of several relevant organizations and the practices they promote as evidence-based for students with challenging behaviors. 54. Improving the Way We Think about Students with Emotional and/or Behavioral Disorders

Abstract

Teacher preparation programs provide preservice teachers with evidence-based teaching strategies, skills of behavior management, and various field experiences. The greatest learning however, is acquired the very first year of instruction in the teacher's own classroom. Teaching students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD) may prove to be the most challenging for preservice teachers. However, when teachers begin to take a proactive role in shaping their perceptions and subsequent behaviors toward a student with EBD, looking closely for the student hiding underneath these behaviors, a positive learning environment and a positive student-teacher relationship ensues. One cannot exist without the other. In this article, the author discusses four considerations that may improve the way teachers think about students with EBD as members of the positive learning environment: (1) reflection; (2) relationships; (3) roles; and (4) resources. The author believes that when teachers consider reflection, relationships, roles, and resources, not only are students with EBD supported, but all students are given the opportunity for high achievement. 55. Promoting Expressive Writing among Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disturbance via Dialogue Journals

Abstract

Written dialogue journals are intended to improve writing and encourage positive social skills by promoting individualized written discussions between a teacher and students' emotional and behavioral needs. This study investigated expressive writing using dialogue journals with five elementary students with emotional and behavioral disturbance (EBD), using a multiple baseline design across baseline, intervention, maintenance, and generalization phases. Students were randomly assigned to treatment order to meet randomization test assumptions. Baseline data were collected from student responses to traditional writing prompts. Individualized dialogue journals, in which students and teachers communicated daily to observed social behavioral issues, were implemented for the duration of the intervention. Dependent measures included student attention to task, length and quality of student written entries, and a student satisfaction survey. Visual analysis indicated an increase in time on task for all participants, and an increase in length of writing and writing quality for four of the five participants. Randomization tests applied to these data yielded significant results for all writing measures. In addition, survey results suggested that participants regarded the dialogue journals with mild satisfaction overall. Implications for future research are discussed. 56. The In-Vitro Effect of Homeopathically Prepared Rubus idaeus and 680 nm Laser Irradiation on Cervical Cancer Cells.

Abstract

Background Cervical cancer (CC) is the second leading cancer in women and is the most common in those aged 15 to 44 years. Medicinal plant extracts have been used as homeopathic preparations for health benefits. Rubus idaeus (RI) is used to treat disorders of the female genital tract and produces cytotoxic effects. However, the use of homeopathically prepared RI in combination with low level laser therapy has not previously been explored. Aim The study aims to investigate the in-vitro effects of homeopathically prepared RI alone and in combination as a potential photosensitizer with Low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) at fluencies of 5, 10, and 15 J/cm 2. Methods HeLa CC cells were treated with RI (D3, D6, and 30cH homeopathic preparations). Cells were then treated with RI IC 50 and 680 nm laser diode at 5, 10, and 15 J/cm 2 fluencies, and the results compared with untreated control cells. Trypan blue viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) cytotoxicity, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) proliferation assays were used to analyze the cellular dose-responses along with inverted microscopy, Hoechst staining and Annexin-V/PI staining. Results RI D3 alone demonstrated an ability to reduce cellular viability to 59% and also to reduce ATP levels. The subsequent combined treatment protocol of RI D3 with all fluencies of laser demonstrated an increase in cellular ATP and increased LDH levels compared with the control. Conclusion The increased ATP and LDH levels observed in the combined treatment protocol of 680 nm laser and RI D3 at fluencies of 5, 10 and 15 J/cm 2 , show that the Warburg effect might have been induced in the CC cells – an increase in glucose uptake and the preferential production of lactate, even in the presence of oxygen. More research, including work on other cell lines, needs to be conducted to identify if RI and perhaps a different wavelength of laser irradiation could have potential in inducing cell death in cancer cells. Abstract

Background. A deficiency of D-chiro-inositol-inositolphosphoglycan mediator (DCI-IPG) may contribute to insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Whether the relationship between impaired DCI-IPG release and insulin resistance is specific to PCOS rather than obesity is unknown. We assessed insulin-released DCI-IPG and its relationship to insulin sensitivity at baseline and after weight loss in obese women with and without PCOS. Methods. Obese PCOS (n=16) and normal (n=15) women underwent 8 weeks of a hypocaloric diet. The Matsuda index, area under the curve DCI-IPG (AUCDCI-IPG), AUCinsulin, and AUCDCI-IPG/AUCinsulin were measured during a 2 hr OGTT at baseline and 8 weeks. Results. PCOS women had lower AUCDCI-IPG/AUCinsulin at baseline and a significant relationship between AUCDCI-IPG/AUCinsulin and Matsuda index (p=0.0003), which was not present in controls. Weight loss was similar between PCOS (−4.08 kg) and normal women (−4.29 kg, p=0.6281). Weight loss in PCOS women did not change the relationship between AUCDCI-IPG/AUCinsulin and Matsuda index (p=0.0100), and this relationship remained absent in control women. Conclusion. The association between AUCDCI-IPG/AUCinsulin and insulin sensitivity was only found in PCOS but not in normal women, and this relationship was unaffected by weight loss. DCI and its messenger may contribute to insulin resistance in PCOS independent of obesity.

61. The Policy Value of Manpower Planning in the United States.

Abstract

This paper discusses the limitations of manpower planning activity as a source of policy criteria and suggests some directions for improving the state of the art. Sections I and II of the paper begin with a general discussion of the conceptual and institutional requisites of manpower planning in policy analysis and formulation. Section III extends the discussion by examining the current state of the art in estimating future manpower requirements and the effects of conceptual and institutional factors on knowledge generation and policy analysis. It also examines the effects of these constraints on estimations of future manpower supplies and the interaction of supply and requirements. Section IV suggests some possible means for enhancing the policy value of manpower planning. (Author/WL)

62. Employment Projections in the Primary Metals Industry.

Abstract

This document contains five working papers featuring employment projections for five segments of industry in Ohio. The purpose of the studies described in the papers is to evaluate projections generated by the quantitative models used in the projections process and to elicit insights and qualitative information from industry practitioners that are not otherwise available to analysts. The methodology for these projections involves a projection of Ohio's share of national industry employment for each industrial sector. This share projection is then fitted to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' projection for each industry to estimate Ohio's employment in the sector in the target year. These sectoral employment projections are then fitted to industry-specific staffing patterns derived from periodic surveys of Ohio business establishments adjusted by a set of change factors to anticipate the effects of technical change on the occupational mix. These final estimates of future occupational requirements are then adjusted by a set of occupation-specific replacement rates to estimate total requirements. The more qualitative analysis represented by the working papers reflects a concern with the validity of long-term projection models in periods and in areas affected by extreme structural change and/or severe economic fluctuations. The employment projections in these five papers are for the primary metals industry; fabricated metal products; machinery industry (except electrical); electrical and electronic machinery, equipment, and supplies; and transportation equipment. Abstract

We model the fluids involved in the alteration processes recorded in the Sheep bed Member mudstones of Yellowknife Bay (YKB), Gale crater, Mars, as revealed by the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover investigations. We compare the Gale crater waters with fluids modeled for shergottites, nakhlites, and the ancient meteorite ALH 84001, as well as rocks analyzed by the Mars Exploration rovers, and with terrestrial ground and surface waters. The aqueous solution present during sediment alteration associated with phyllosilicate formation at Gale was high in Na, K, and Si; had low Mg, Fe, and Al concentrations relative to terrestrial ground waters such as the Deccan Traps and other modeled Mars fluids; and had near neutral to alkaline pH. Ca and S species were present in the 10(exp -3) to 10(exp -2) concentration range. A fluid local to Gale crater strata produced the alteration products observed by Curiosity and subsequent evaporation of this ground water- type fluid formed impure sulfate- and silica-rich deposits veins or horizons. In a second, separate stage of alteration, partial dissolution of this sulfate-rich layer in Yellowknife Bay,or beyond, led to the pure sulfate veins observed in YKB. This scenario is analogous to similar processes identified at a terrestrial site in Triassic sediments with gypsum veins of the Mercia Mudstone Group in Watchet Bay, UK.

Abstract

Yellowknife Bay (YKB; sol 124-198) is the second site that the Mars Science Laboratory Rover Curiosity investigated in detail on its mission in Gale Crater. YKB represents lake bed sediments from an overall neutral pH, low salinity environment, with a mineralogical composition which includes Ca-sulfates, Fe oxide/hydroxides, Fe-sulfides, amorphous material, and trioctahedral phyllosilicates. We investigate whether sulfide alteration could be associated with ancient habitable microenvironments in the Gale mudstones. Some textural evidence for such alteration may be pre-sent in the nodules present in the mudstone.

The Apollo virtual microscope is a means of viewing, over the Internet, polished thin sections of every rock in the Apollo lunar sample collections via software, duplicating many of the functions of a petrological microscope, is described. Images from the Apollo 11 and 12 missions may be viewed at: www.virtualmicroscope.org/content/apollo. Introduction: During the six NASA missions to the Moon from 1969-72 a total of 382 kilograms of rocks and soils, often referred to as "the legacy of Apollo", were collected and returned to Earth. A unique collection of polished thin sections (PTSs) was made from over 400 rocks by the Lunar Sample Curatorial Facility at the Johnson Spacecraft Center (JSC), Houston. These materials have been available for loan to approved PIs but of course they can't be simultaneously investigated by several researchers unless they are co-located or the sample is passed back and forward between them by mail/hand carrying which is inefficient and very risky for irreplaceable material. When The Open University (OU), the world's largest Distance Learning Higher Education Establishment found itself facing a comparable problem (how to supply thousands of undergraduate students with an interactive petrological microscope and a personal set of thin sections), it decided to develop a software tool called the Virtual Microscope (VM). As a result it is now able to make the unique and precious collection of Apollo specimens universally available as a resource for concurrent study by anybody in the world's Earth and Planetary Sciences community. Herein, we describe the first steps of a collaborative project between OU and the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Curatorial Facility to record a PTS for every lunar rock, beginning with those collected by the Apollo 11 and 12 missions. Method: Production of a virtual microscope dedicated to a particular theme divides into four main parts - photography, image processing, building and assembly of virtual microscope components, and publication on a website. Two large research quality microscopes are used to collect all the images required for a virtual microscope. The first is part of an integrated package that utilizes Leica PowerMosaic software and a motorised XYZ stage to generate large area mosaics. It includes a fast acquisition camera and depending on the PTS size normally is used to produce seamless mosaic images consisting of 100-500 individual photographs. If the sample is suitable, three mosaics of each sample are recorded - plane polarised light, between crossed polars and reflected light. In order for the VM to be a true petrological microscope it is necessary to recreate the features of a rotating stage and perform observations using filters to produce polarised light. Thus the petrological VM includes the capability of seeing changes in optical properties (pleochroism and birefringence) during rotation allowing mineral identification. The second microscope in the system provides the functions of the rotating stage. To this microscope we have added a robotically controlled motor to acquire seventy-two images (5 degree intervals) in plane polarised light and between crossed polars. To process the images acquired from the two microscopes involves a combination of proprietary software (Photoshop) and our own in-house code. The final stage involves assembling all the components in an HTML5 environment. Pathfinder investigations: We have undertaken a number of pilot studies to demonstrate the efficacy of the petrological microscope with lunar samples. The first was to make available on-line images collected from the Educational Package of Apollo samples provided by NASA to the UK STFC (Science and Technical Facilities Council) for loan as educational material e.g. for schools. The real PTSs of the samples are now no longer sent out to schools removing the risks associated with transport, accidental breakage and eliminating the possibility of loss. The availability of lunar sample VM-related material was further extended to include twenty-eight specimens from all of the Apollo missions. Some of these samples were made more generally available through an ibook entitled "Moon Rocks: an introduction to the Geology of the Moon," free from the Apple Bookstore. Research possibilities: Although the Virtual Microscope was originally conceived as a teaching aid and was later recognised as a means of public outreach and engagement, we now realize that it also has enormous potential as a high level research tool. Following discussions with the JSC Curators we have received Curation and Analysis Planning Team for Extraterrestrial Materials (CAPTEM) permission to embark on a programme of digitizing the entire lunar sample PTS collection for all three of the above purposes. By the time of the 47th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) we will have completed 81 rocks collected during the Apollo 11 and 12 missions and the data, with cross-links to the Lunar Sample Compendium will go live on the Web at the 47th LPSC. The VM images of the Apollo 11 (41 VM images) and 12 (40 VM images) missions can be viewed at: http:/www.virtualmicroscope.org/content/apollo. The lunar sample VM will enable large numbers of skilled/unskilled microscopists (professional and amateur researchers, educators and students, enthusiasts and the simply curious non-scientists) to share the information from a single sample. It will mean that all the PTSs already cut, even historical ones, could be available for new joint investigations or private study. The scientific return from the collection will increase exponentially as a result of further debate and discussion. Simultaneously the VM will remove the need for making unnecessary multiple samplings, avoid consignment of delicate/breakable specimens (all of which are priceless) to insecure mail/courier services and reduce direct labour and indirect costs, travel budgets and unproductive travelling time necessary for co-location of collaborating researchers. For the future we have already recognized further potential for virtual technology. There is nothing that a petrologist likes more than to see the original rock as a hand specimen. It is entirely possible to recreate virtual hand specimens with 3-D hard and software, already developed for viewing fossils, located within the Curatorial Facility, http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/lunar/lsc/index.cfm.

Abstract

While technology-based interventions enhance instruction and improve outcomes for students with disabilities, implementing and integrating technology in authentic learning environments continues to be a challenge. Based on the experiences of a variety of Stepping-Up Technology Implementation projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, this mixed-methods study explored the essential factors for the successful implementation of technology-based interventions in K-12 schools and early childhood programs. Based on the qualitative analysis of projects’ implementation reports and responses to the follow-up questionnaire, four major themes emerged. The barriers and facilitators to technology implementation were reported across such areas as (a) developing and sustaining buy-in, (b) ensuring implementation fidelity to support the intervention, (c) research-to-practice dilemmas, and (d) data serving multiple purposes. The discussion and practical implications for supporting technology implementation are provided.

Abstract

Iron deficiency and anemia are associated with impaired neurocognitive development and immune function in young children. Total body iron, calculated from serum ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor concentrations, and hemoglobin allow for monitoring of the iron and anemia status of children in the United States. The purpose of this analysis is to describe the prevalence of iron deficiency (ID), anemia, and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among children 1–5 years using data from the 2007–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Prevalence of ID, anemia, and IDA among children 1–5 years was 7.1% (5.5, 8.7), 3.2% (2.0, 4.3), and 1.1% (0.6, 1.7), respectively. The prevalence of both ID and anemia were higher among children 1–2 years (p < 0.05). In addition, 50% of anemic children 1–2 years were iron deficient. This analysis provides an update on the prevalence of ID, anemia, and IDA for a representative sample of US children. Our results suggest little change in these indicators over the past decade. Monitoring of ID and anemia is critical and prevention of ID in early childhood should remain a public health priority.

Abstract

A successful Mars exploration program has revealed chapters of Mars history, but in this book, the pages are ripped out of the binding and scattered across the surface. An examination of each page reveals interesting information, but there is no way to read the book in a logical order. Geochronology is the tool that puts page number onto the individual pages, and allows the book of Martian history to be read in its proper order. The KArLE experiment performs the first dedicated in situ geochronology investigation on Mars, bringing clarity to Mars 2020 samples and context to its landing site.

Abstract

The netrin family of secreted proteins provides migrational cues in the developing central nervous system. Recently, netrins have also been shown to regulate diverse processes beyond their functions in the brain, incluing the ochrestration of inflammatory events. Particularly netrin-1 has been implicated in dampening hypoxia-induced inflammation. Here, we hypothesized an anti-inflammatory role of endogenous netrin-1 in acute kidney injury (AKI). As homozygous deletion of netrin-1 is lethal, we studied mice with partial netrin-1 deletion (Ntn-1(+/-) mice) as a genetic model. In fact, Ntn-1(+/-) mice showed attenuated Ntn-1 levels at baseline and following ischemic AKI. Functional studies of AKI induced by 30 min of renal ischemia and reperfusion revealed enhanced kidney dysfunction in Ntn-1(+/-) mice as assessed by measurements of glomerular filtration, urine flow rate, urine electrolytes, serum creatinine and creatinine clearance. Consistent with these findings, histological studies indicated a more severe degree kidney injury. Similarly, elevations of renal and systemic inflammatory markers were enhanced in mice with partial netrin-1 deficiency. Finally, treatment of Ntn-1(+/-) mice with exogenous netrin-1 restored a normal phenotype during AKI. Taking together, these studies implicate endogenous netrin-1 in attenuating renal inflammation during AKI.

93. Low grade endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma: A review and update with emphasis on morphologic variants, mimics, immunohistochemical and molecular features

Abstract

Endometrioid adenocarcinoma (ECa) may feature a number of morphologic variations that can pose diagnostic challenge. The purpose of this review and update is to examine the spectrum of morphologic variants and mimics of low-grade (FIGO grades 1 and 2) ECa, with a focus on histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features that may inform diagnosis and treatment. In addition to ECa of usual type, variants with unique cytologic and/or architectural features presented include the following: 1) ECa with mucinous differentiation of conventional (Müllerian) type; 2) ECa with squamous differentiation; 3) ECa with morular metaplasia; 4) ECa with patterns resembling cervical transformation zone tissue and/or microglandular hyperplasia; 5) ECa with cytoplasmic clearing; 6) ECa with papillation, including villoglandular variant of ECa, ECa with small nonvillous papillae, and ECa with a “low-grade serous”-like component or surface changes mimicking ovarian serous borderline tumor; 7) corded and hyalinized variant of ECa; 8) ECa with spindled epithelial cells; 9) ECa with sex cord-like pattern; and 10) ECa with other unusual cytologic and associated features. For each variant, relevant differential diagnoses and diagnostic strategies are discussed. The most clinically significant distinctions come into play in the differential diagnosis between low-grade ECa and one of its high-grade mimics. In this setting, the most fundamental tool in the pathologist's diagnostic arsenal is recognition of the low-grade cytologic features typical of low-grade ECa. Circumspect evaluation of cytologic features, complemented by an awareness of the morphologic spectrum, an appropriate battery of immunohistochemical stains when needed, and mindfulness of the clinical scenario, should guide the pathologist to the correct histotype in even challenging cases.
