Abstract Accurate analysis of the maturity grade of the reference bone in the wrist is critical for bone age assessment. The main difference between the maturity grades of the reference bone in the wrist X‐ray image is the difference in the texture and morphological characteristics of the bone, and the difference in the characteristics between adjacent levels is small, which brings great challenges in bone age assessment. The hamate (the wrist bone in line with the 4th and 5th fingers) is one of the most important reference bones in the standards of skeletal maturity of the hand and wrist for the Chinese (CHN) method. Aiming at the problem of hamate maturity level evaluation, a method of hamate maturity level classification based on feature enhanced residual network and probability joint judgment is proposed. In this method, we propose the enhanced characteristic residual network (ECR‐Net) is proposed to enhance the feature extraction capability of the network and improve the loss function to reduce the impact of cross‐grade errors on the accuracy of bone age assessment. On this basis, multiple convolutional neural networks to make joint probabilistic judgments are relied on to obtain the final hamate maturity grade. The proposed ECR‐Net achieves a macro accuracy of 96.92% on the hamate maturity evaluation, and there are no errors across two levels. Also, this approach achieves a macro accuracy of 97.15% when the probabilistic joint judgment method is employed while avoiding errors that span more than two levels. The network model and method proposed in this paper have good accuracy and practicability for the automatic identification of the hamate maturity level, which is of great significance for the accurate assessment of bone age.

Abstract Background The role of preoperative serum tumor markers in HAS patients was vague, we designed the study to explore the effect of preoperative serum tumor markers on predicting the prognosis of HAS patients. Methods A total of 139 patients were included according to the different tumor makers. X-tile tool was employed to identify the optimal cut-off values of respective tumor makers. Multivariate analyses were conducted to determine independent risk factors. Results The optimal cut-off value of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for 3-years overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was 516 ng/mL. Patients with high-level AFP values assumed significantly worse OS and RFS than those with low-level AFP values (P = 0.028 and P = 0.011, respectively). The optimal cut-off value of Carbohydrate antigen (CA)19–9 for OS and RFS was 51.3 U/mL. And the survival results were similar with AFP in the aspects of OS and RFS (P = 0.009 and P

Abstract Background Numerous pre-clinical studies showed that Qingda granule (QDG) was effective in treating hypertension. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of QDG in reducing blood pressure among patients with grade 1 hypertension at low-medium risk. Methods The study is designed as a randomized, multi-center, double-blinded, non-inferiority clinical trial. Five hundred fifty-two patients with grade 1 hypertension at low-medium risk from 13 hospitals will be recruited and randomly assigned to the QDG group (n = 276, treated with valsartan capsule simulation agent and QDG) or control group (n = 276, treated with valsartan capsule and QDG simulation agent). The treatment period will be 4 weeks and the follow-up period will last 4 weeks after treatment. Primary outcome will be a decreased value of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure after treatment. And second outcome will include the decreased value of diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure at the end of follow-up, the percentage of participants achieving normal blood pressure at the end of treatment and follow-up, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and TCM syndrome scores at the end of treatment and follow-up, and levels of hypertensive hormones at end of treatment and follow-up. Discussion This study will provide initial evidence regarding the clinical efficacy and safety of QDG in treating grade 1 hypertension at low-medium risk. A solar absorber based on tungsten with an ultra-wide wavelength band is investigated numerically using the finite-difference time–domain method. The designed structure consists of a cross-shaped resonator on top of the absorber and a metal thin film on the bottom that are separated by an intermediate dielectric layer. The absorber demonstrates continuous high absorptivity (>90%) over the 514–1945 nm wavelength range, and the average absorptivity ranges up to 92.36% within the 200–2000 nm range. The excitation of propagating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR in combination with Fabry–Pérot resonance leads to the observed wideband absorption. We also demonstrate that the proposed absorber is insensitive to both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations and study its absorptive performance at larger angles of incidence. The effects of the structural parameters and of different dielectric layer materials on the absorption performance have also been investigated. Furthermore, we explain the absorption mechanism using a power flow plot and impedance matching. The proposed absorber has promising prospects for applications, including solar cells, solar energy harvesting, and thermal emitters.

While the physical interactions between the Golgi apparatus (Golgi) and lipid droplets (LDs) have been suggested through system-level imaging, the Golgi-LD membrane contact sites (MCSs) remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we show evidence to support the existence of Golgi-LD MCSs in HEK293 cells. We further suggest that vacuolar protein sorting-associated protein 13B (VPS13B) localizes to and promotes the formation of Golgi-LD contacts upon oleic acid (OA) stimulation using 3D high-resolution microscopy. Depletion of VPS13B moderately affects the formation of Golgi-LD contacts upon OA treatment in addition to the fragmentation of the Golgi. Although cellular functions of VPS13B-mediated contacts are still elusive, these findings may provide a new insight into related diseases caused by loss-of-function mutations of VPS13B.

Abstract We briefly review the recent progress of theories and experiments on spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM)-coupled quantum gases. The coupling between the intrinsic degree of freedom of particles and their external orbital motions widely exists in the universe and leads to a broad variety of fundamental phenomena in both classical physics and quantum mechanics. The recent realization of synthetic SOAM coupling in cold atoms has attracted a great deal of attention and stimulated a large amount of considerations on exotic quantum phases in both Bose and Fermi gases. In this review, we present a basic idea of engineering SOAM coupling in neutral atoms, starting from a semiclassical description of atom-light interaction. Unique features of single-particle physics in the presence of SOAM coupling are discussed. The intriguing ground-state quantum phases of weakly interacting Bose gases are introduced, with emphasis on a so-called angular stripe phase, which has not yet been observed at present. It is demonstrated how to generate a stable giant vortex in a SOAM-coupled Fermi superfluid. We also discuss the topological characters of a Fermi superfluid in the presence of SOAM coupling. We then introduce the experimental achievement of SOAM coupling in $$^{87}$$ 87 Rb Bose gases and its first observation of phase transitions. The most recent development of SOAM-coupled Bose gases in experiments is also summarized. Regarding the controllability of ultracold quantum gases, it opens a new era, from the quantum simulation point of view, to study the fundamental physics resulting from SOAM coupling as well as newly emergent quantum phases.

Abstract Background Clinical staging of gastric cancer (GC) before treatment is essential. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a recommended staging tool, but its efficacy remains controversial. Our previous prospective study evaluated the potential value of EUS for T staging and presented discrepancies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of EUS in T staging by comparing it with pathological staging. We analyze the factors that can potentially affect accuracy to identify suitable subgroups for EUS staging. Methods Data from a total of 1763 consecutive patients with GC from January 2015 to December 2017 were analyzed. Results from EUS and pathological T staging were compared. The factors that might affect EUS’s accuracy were analyzed. Results The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of EUS in patients with early GC were 62.08%, 96.13%, 90.94%, and 80.21%, respectively. The accuracy rates of uT1, uT2–uT4, and uT3–uT4 were 90.94%, 79.02%, and 78.39%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, underestimation was more likely to be observed in patients with tumors located in the middle or upper third of the stomach. Overestimation was more likely to be observed in patients with tumors located in the lower third or those without ulcer. Other factors affecting accuracy included ulcer, differentiation, larger size and undergoing surgery. Conclusion Our findings highlight the role of EUS in determining the T staging of GC. Overestimation and underestimation in T-staging were significantly associated with the tumor location in early GC, and a decision-making algorithm was proposed for clinical practice in early cancers based on these findings.

A field investigation of the indoor thermal environment and comfort in a typical office building in Qingdao was conducted. During the investigation, the indoor and outdoor environment physical parameters, such as air temperature and relative humidity (RH), were recorded in real-time. The occupants’ thermal responses, basic personal information, and adaptive behaviors were collected. The results showed that the indoor air temperature was from 18.8 °C to 21.6 °C, which was 2–3 °C lower than that during the heating season. Occupants employed heating personal comfort systems (HPCSs), such as electric heaters, air heaters, and leg radiators, to maintain thermal comfort. Based on their requirements for HPCSs, the occupants were divided into three groups-those without HPCS and did not prefer to use (Group A), those with HPCS (Group B), and those without HPCS but preferred to use (Group C). The results showed that the legs and feet thermal sensation of Group B was significantly higher than that of Group C, which made Group B more comfortable. The self-evaluated working efficiency of Group B was slightly higher than that of Group C. Notably, working efficiency was positively related to the overall thermal comfort vote (TCV).

Dietary supplementation is proposed as a strategy to reduce the side effects of conventional chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Chitosan oligosaccharides (COS), a functional carbohydrate, have been identified to potentially inhibit cancer cell proliferation. However, a detailed investigation is required to fully understand its exact influence, particularly in terms of COS composition. The antitumor activities of COS oligomers and its monomer of glucosamine, when combined with doxorubicin separately, were evaluated in MDA-MB-231 cells. Chitotriose was identified to have the most significant synergistic effect. Preincubation with chitotriose was observed to promote the entry of doxorubicin into the cell nuclei and induce morphological changes in the cells. Mechanism analysis at the transcriptional level revealed that the early growth response 1 (Egr1) gene was a key regulator in enhancing the suppressive effect. This gene was found to modulate the activity of its downstream gene, growth arrest, and DNA damage-inducible alpha (Gadd45a). The role of Egr1 was confirmed through a small interfering RNA test and function assay. These findings provide insight into the effect and underlying mechanism of chitotriose supplementation for TNBC therapy.

In recent years, with the continuous improvement of computer science and technology, artificial intelligence(AI)technology based on deep learning(DL)has developed rapidly and attracted wide attention all over the world. Great progress has been made in the research and application of AI in the medical field. In the field of optometry, AI can assist the diagnosis of myopia, strabismus, amblyopia and other diseases, and has achieved good results in the screening and early diagnosis of keratoconus as well as in the prevention and correction of myopia. Nevertheless, there are some limitations and great challenges in the application of AI in optometry, including clinical and technical challenges, interpretability of algorithmic results, medical legal issues and so on. This paper reviews the application, limitation and prospect of AI in the field of optometry.

Abstract Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the main causes of death in the world, and the incidence of AMI is increasing in the young population. Drug-coated balloon (DCB) has become an effective concept for the treatment of in-stent restenosis, small vessel disease, bifurcation lesions, high blood risk conditions, and even de novo large vessel disease. To ensure whether DCB can play an alternative role in AMI, we conducted a comprehensive meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of DCB in the treatment of AMI. Electronic databases were searched for RCTs that compared DCB with stent for AMI. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), the secondary outcome was late lumen loss (LLL). RevMan 5.3 software and RStudio software were used for data analysis. Five RCTs involving 528 patients with 6–12 months of follow-up were included. There was no significant difference in the incidence of MACEs between DCB group and stent group (RR, 0.85; 95% CI 0.42 to 1.74; P = 0.66). Camellia oleifera Abel. (C. oleifera), one of the four woody oil-producing plants in the world produces edible oils with high percentage of unsaturated fatty acid content in seeds. The mature C. oleifera seeds continue to undergo a series of physiological changes after harvest. To this end, the dynamic changes in nutrients, oil content, fatty acid composition, and endogenous hormone content in C. oleifera seeds under different natural drying times after harvest were investigated. The content of soluble sugar and soluble protein of C. oleifera seeds increased with the extension of natural drying, especially soluble sugar content increased nearly 2-fold at 30 d after post-harvest natural drying compared with that of the control group. The content of oil reached a peak (23.6%) at 30 d after post-harvest natural drying. During the post-harvest natural drying process, the relative content of palmitic acid and oleic acid increased, while the relative content of palmitic acid and linoleic acid decreased. Furthermore, the levels of unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid) increased significantly with increasing natural drying time. The overall trend of endogenous hormones SA, SL, and ACC concentrations increased with the post-harvest natural drying process. Furthermore, the concentration of SA, SL, and ACC were positively correlated with oil content. Altogether, post-harvest natural drying for 30 days significantly promoted the anabolism of oil and improved the quality of C. oleifera seeds. These findings provide a scientific basis for reasonable post-harvest treatment to improve Camellia oil yield.

As X80 pipelines are applied in large scale, the safety of long-term service of long-distance oil and gas pipelines has attracted much attention. In order to solve the problem of detecting the inner surface crack defects of pipelines, experimental research has been conducted for the laser ultrasonic nondestructive detection method characterized by noncontact and high precision, which was also applied to the inner surface crack defect detection of X80 pipelines. The laser ultrasonic signals in the areas of X80 pipeline specimen with/without cracks and the laser ultrasonic based B-scan detection and imaging were obtained through experimental measurement. Meanwhile, the influence of crack defects on laser ultrasonic signal were analyzed. The research results indicate that: the inner surface crack defects of pipelines can be detected and accurately located through the laser ultrasonic based B-scan. Hence, the laser ultrasonic based B-scan is valuable for promotion and application in the nondestructive detection of pipelines.(9 Figures, 21 References)

Abstract A 75-day rearing trial was designed to study the response of juvenile Megalobrama amblycephala to dietary methionine (Met) levels. Three practical diets with graded Met levels (0.40%, 0.84% and 1.28% dry matter) were prepared to feed the juvenile fish. The results showed that the 0.84% Met diet significantly improved the growth compared with 0.40% diets. Compared with 0.84% and 1.28% Met, 0.40% Met significantly increased the hepatic lipid content, while decreasing the muscular lipid and glycogen contents. 0.40% Met decreased the protein levels of phospho-Eukaryotic initiation factor 4E binding protein-1 (p-4e-bp1), 4e-bp1 and Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 in the liver, compared with 0.84% diet, while an increasing trend was observed in the muscle. Met supplementation tended to decrease and increase lipid synthesis in the liver and muscle, respectively, via changing mRNA levels of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1, fatty acid synthetase and acetyl-CoA carboxylase. 1.28% dietary Met promoted fatty acid β-oxidation and lipolysis in both the liver and muscle by increasing carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha, lipoprotein lipase and lipase mRNA levels. Compared with 0.40% and 0.84% dietary Met, 1.28% Met enhanced the mRNA levels of hepatic gluconeogenesis related genes phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pepck), and glucose-6-phosphatase, and muscular glycolysis related genes phosphofructokinase (pfk), and pyruvate kinase (pk). The mRNA levels of hepatic pfk, pk and glucokinase were markedly downregulated by 1.28% Met compared with 0.84% level. Muscular pepck, glycogen synthase, and hepatic glucose transporters 2 mRNA levels were induced by 1.28% Met. Generally, deficient Met level decreased the growth of juvenile Megalobrama amblycephala, and the different nutrient metabolism responses to dietary Met were revealed in the liver and muscle.

We provide a molecular phylogeny of Asian pit vipers (the genus Gloydius) based on four mitochondrial genes (12S, 16S, ND4, and cytb). Sequences of Gloydius himalayanus, the only member of the genus that occurs south of the Himalayan range, are included for the first time. In addition, two new species of the genus Gloydius are described based on specimens collected from Zayu, Tibet, west of the Nujiang River and Heishui, Sichuan, east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The new species, Gloydius lipipengi sp. nov., can be differentiated from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: the third supralabial not reaching the orbit (separated from it by a suborbital scale); wide, black-bordered greyish postorbital stripe extending from the posterior margin of the orbit (not separated by the postoculars, covering most of the anterior temporal scale) to the ventral surface of the neck; irregular black annular crossbands on the mid-body; 23-21-15 dorsal scales; 165 ventral scales, and 46 subcaudal scales. Gloydius swild sp. nov. can be differentiated from its congeners by the narrower postorbital stripe (only half the width of the anterior temporal scale, the lower edge is approximately straight and bordered with white); a pair of arched stripes on the occiput; lateral body lakes black spots; a pair of round spots on the parietal scales; 21 rows of mid-body dorsal scales; zigzag dark brown stripes on the dorsum; 168–170 ventral scales, and 43–46 subcaudal scales. The molecular phylogeny in this study supports the sister relationship between G. lipipengi sp. nov. and G. rubromaculatus, another recently described species from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, more than 500 km away, and indicate the basal position of G. himalayanus within the genus and relatively distant relationship to its congeners.

In this paper, we review the recent trends in parallel search and artificial intelligence (AI) applications using emerging non-volatile ternary content addressable memory (TCAM). Firstly, the principle and development of four typical emerging memory used to implement the non-volatile TCAM are discussed. Then, we analyze the principle and challenges of SRAM-based TCAM and non-volatile TCAM for the parallel search. Finally, the research trends and challenges of non-volatile TCAM used for AI application are presented, which include computer-science oriented and neuroscience oriented computing.

Abstract Diet analysis of potential small mammals pest species is important for understanding feeding ecology and evaluating their impact on crops and stored foods. Chinese mole shrew (Anourosorex squamipes), distributed in Southwest China, has previously been reported as a farmland pest. Effective population management of this species requires a better understanding of its diet, which can be difficult to determine with high taxonomic resolution using conventional microhistological methods. In this study, we used two DNA metabarcoding assays to identify 38 animal species and 65 plant genera from shrew stomach contents, which suggest that A. squamipes is an omnivorous generalist. Earthworms are the most prevalent (>90%) and abundant (>80%) food items in the diverse diet of A. squamipes. Species of the Fabaceae (frequency of occurrence [FO]: 88%; such as peanuts) and Poaceae (FO: 71%; such as rice) families were the most common plant foods identified in the diet of A. squamipes. Additionally, we found a seasonal decrease in the diversity and abundance of invertebrate foods from spring and summer to winter. Chinese mole shrew has a diverse and flexible diet throughout the year to adapt to seasonal variations in food availability, contributing to its survival even when food resources are limited. This study provides a higher resolution identification of the diet of A. squamipes than has been previously described and is valuable for understanding shrew feeding ecology as well as evaluating possible species impacts on crops.

Activated Leukocyte Cell Adhesion Molecule (ALCAM/CD166) is a cell–cell adhesion protein conferring heterotypic and homotypic interactions between cells of the same type and different types. It is aberrantly expressed in various cancer types and has been shown to be a regulator of cancer metastasis. In the present study, we investigated potential roles of ALCAM in the peritoneal transcoelomic metastasis in gastrointestinal cancers, a metastatic type commonly occurred in gastro-intestinal and gynaecological malignancies and resulting in poor clinical outcomes. Specifically, we studied whether ALCAM acts as both a ‘seed’ receptor in these tumour cells and a ‘soil’ receptor in peritoneal mesothelial cells during cancer metastasis. Gastric cancer and pancreatic cancer tissues with or without peritoneal metastasis were compared for their levels of ALCAM expression. The impact of ALCAM expression in these tumours was also correlated to the patients’ clinical outcomes, namely peritoneal metastasis-free survival. In addition, cancer cells of gastric and pancreatic origins were used to create cell models with decreased or increased levels of ALCAM expression by genetic knocking down or overexpression, respectively. Human peritoneal mesothelial cells were also genetically transfected to generate cell models with different profiles of ALCAM expression. These cell models were used in the tumour-mesothelial interaction assay to assess if and how the interaction was influenced by ALCAM. Both gastric and pancreatic tumour tissues from patients who developed peritoneal metastases had higher levels of ALCAM transcript than those without. Patients who had tumours with high levels of ALCAM had a much shorter peritoneal metastasis free survival compared with those who had low ALCAM expression (p = 0.006). ALCAM knockdown of the mesothelial cell line MET5A rendered the cells with reduced interaction with both gastric cancer cells and pancreatic cancer cells. Likewise, levels of ALCAM in both human gastric and pancreatic cancer cells were also a determining factor for their adhesiveness to mesothelial cells, a process that was likely to be triggered the phosphorylation of the SRC kinase. A soluble ALCAM (sALCAM) was found to be able to inhibit the adhesiveness between cancer cells and mesothelial cells, mechanistically behaving like a SRC kinase inhibitor. ALCAM is an indicator of peritoneal metastasis in both gastric and pancreatic cancer patients. It acts as not only a potential peritoneal ‘soil’ receptor of tumour seeding but also a ‘soil’ receptor in peritoneal mesothelial cells during cancer metastasis. These findings have an important therapeutic implication for treating peritoneal transcoelomic metastases.
