Abstract

The inhibition effect of Sn2+ on the anodic dissolution of Fe-0.05C steel was investigated electrochemically in a solution of 0.2 M HClO4. Anodic currents were suppressed in the presence of Sn2+, and the suppression behavior depended on the concentration of Sn2+ and the electrode potentials. The experimental condition for the current suppression is explained by the theory of underpotential deposition (UPD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth analysis revealed the deposition of metallic Sn on the steel, while inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis demonstrated that the Sn layer thickness was monolayer-level. This strongly suggests that the anodic dissolution of iron was suppressed by the UPD of Sn. The proposed mechanism for corrosion inhibition by Sn-UPD also explains the superior corrosion resistance of Sn-bearing steel under atmospheric environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have carried out ultrasonic measurements of a boron-doped silicon ingot grown by the Czochralski method in order to determine the quadrupole-strain interaction constant of a vacancy orbital. The low-temperature softening of the elastic constant C44 shows a remarkable variation depending on positions of the ingot, which reflects the distribution of vacancy concentration N in the ingot. An infrared laser scattering tomograph was employed to measure the density and size of voids in the silicon wafers by determining the vacancy concentration Ncons consumed in void formation. Using a combination of laser scattering tomography and low-temperature softening, we have found a sum rule in which the initially created vacancy concentration Ntotal corresponds to the sum of the residual vacancy concentration N and the consumed vacancy concentration Ncons as Ntotal = N + Ncons. Taking account of the sum rule, we deduce the interaction constant gΓ5 = (2.8±0.2)×105 K for the quadrupole-strain interaction HQS = -gΓ5Ozxεzx of the vacancy orbital. The huge deformation energy of 1.6×105 K per vacancy with the Γ8 ground state for unit strain εzx = 1 verified the strong electron–lattice interaction of the vacancy orbital. Employing the one-to-one correspondence between the softening of ΔC44/C44 = 1.0×10-4 down to 30 mK and the vacancy concentration of N = 1.5 ×1013 cm-3, we can determine the vacancy concentration by low-temperature ultrasonic measurements. The present work surely puts forward a novel semiconductor technology based on low-temperature ultrasonic measurements for evaluating vacancy concentration in silicon wafers.

Abstract

For the samples taken from the void region of the CZ silicon crystal grown with the same solidification condition and different thermal histories after the solidification, we measure the magnitude S of the elastic softening which is proportional to the concentration of the single vacancies [V], For these samples, we also measure the size distribution of the void density by using the infrared lightscattering tomography, to evaluate the concentration [Vc] of the vacancies consumed for the void formation. From these two experiments, we find a sum rale [Vc] + a S= C, where C depends only on the solidification condition and is independent of the thermal history after the solidification. This enables us to find the conservation rale of the vacancies [Vc] + [V] = C. The value of the proportionality constant a in the relation [V] = a S is determined. Demonstration of determining the absolute values of [V] from the measured S is given. An estimate is made for the value of the quadrupole-strain coupling constant.

Abstract

This paper proposes a singular perturbation approximation for semistable linear systems. In particular, we derive a novel expression of error systems in the Laplace domain. As a result, we obtain an h2-error bound in terms of the sum of eigenvalues of an index matrix, which coincides with a controllability gramian of the state-derivative. Furthermore, we show that the singular perturbation model appropriately preserves the semistability of the original system and also guarantees the stability of the error system. Abstract

This paper proposes a singular perturbation approximation that preserves system passivity and an interconnection topology among subsystems. In the first half of this paper, we develop a singular perturbation approximation valid for stable linear systems. Using the relation between the singular perturbation and the reciprocal transformation, we derive a tractable expression of the error system in the Laplace domain, which provides a novel insight to regulate the approximating quality of reduced models. Then in the second half, we develop a structured singular perturbation approximation that focuses on a class of interconnected systems. In this paper, we develop a dissipativity-preserving model reduction method based on a generalized singular perturbation approximation. This model reduction framework can deal with not only standard singular perturbation approximation but also projection-based model reduction as a special case. To develop such a model reduction method, we investigate a condition under which system dissipativity is appropriately preserved through the approximation. Moreover, deriving a novel factorization of the error system in the Laplace domain, we derive an a priori error bound in terms of the H2-norm.
