Abstract

Background: In 2017, Korea implemented a nationwide project to screen and treat latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in high-risk for transmission public congregate settings. We aimed to assess programme success using a cascade of care framework.Materials and methods: We undertook a cohort study of people from three congregate settings screened between March 2017 and December 2018: (1) first-grade high school students, (2) employees of educational institutions, (3) employees of social welfare facilities. We report percentages of participants with LTBI completing each step in the cascade of care model. Poisson regression models were used to determine factors associated with not visiting clinics, not initiating treatment, and not completing treatment.Results: Among the 96,439 participants who had a positive interferon-gamma release assay result, the percentage visiting clinics for further assessment, to initiate treatment, and who then completed treatment were 50.7, 34.7, and 28.9%, respectively. Compared to those aged 20–34 years, individuals aged < 20 years and aged ≥ 65 years were less likely to visit clinics, though more likely to complete treatment once initiated. Using public health centres rather than private hospitals was associated with people “not initiating treatment” (adjusted risk ratio [aRR], 3.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.95–3.86). Nine-month isoniazid monotherapy therapy was associated with “not completing treatment,” compared to 3-month isoniazid and rifampin therapy (aRR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.16–1.41).Conclusion: Among participants with LTBI from three congregate settings, less than one third completed treatment. Age, treatment centre, and initial regimen were important determinants of losses to care through the cascade.

Abstract

This study examines how and to what extent a couple's education is associated with married women's employment and the motherhood penalty in 10 countries. We use data from the Luxembourg Income Study and the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (2013). Overall, Denmark and Norway show the highest level of married women's employment and no motherhood penalty. Our findings support the opportunity cost perspective, in general, that highly educated women are more likely to participate in work than less educated women, except in Germany, Korea, and Japan. The social capital and gender-egalitarian perspectives hold for the United States and Italy. We also find significant variation in married women's employment in East Asian countries. Married Korean women are less likely to be employed than in China and Taiwan, while Japanese women are the least employed among husband high - wife high education couples.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the language ability of Korean people in various fields of their lives and formulate future language policy based on this knowledge. To achieve this goal, we must first prepare research tools with a sufficient degree of validity and reliability. In this study, research tools were designed based on the results of a 2017 study, and the questions were formulated to reflect the reality with increased accuracy because the previous study was criticized for its inaccurate depiction of reality. In the grammar section, the evaluation framework was significantly revised, and questions were supplemented to determine the language ability of the test-taker during day-to-day conversations. In addition, in the reading section, a digital literacy item was included by establishing its concept and component parts, with the corresponding analysis tools. The stratified sampling method using population distribution statistics was applied to secure the representativeness of the survey respondents. In addition, five variables-sex, age, regional scale, education, and occupational-were set, and samples were extracted to ensure that the survey respondents can be sampled in proportion to the actual population distribution by each variable. The analysis result of the integrated type, which includes both the 가 and 나 types, shows that the average score of respondents'' Korean language ability was 635.7 out of 1,030 in 2018. For specific grade ratings, Level 4 is 13.4%, Level 3 is 44.7%, Level 2 is 34.2%, and Level 1 is 7.6%. Based on the survey results, specific discussions were conducted regarding the preparation and implementation of future surveys and the regularization of the five-year Korean language ability investigation.
