Abstract

The article discusses a study on the structure and properties of mixtures of phthalocyanine pigment (PCP) and di-para-methyldibenzylidene-sorbitol (MDBS) with isotactic polypropylene (PP). It refers to the isotactic polyppropylene as a polymorphic polymer that can crystallise in three crystalline forms namely monoclinic, hexagonal and orthorhombic. It suggests that the introduction of MDBS resulted to a more appreciable increase in modulus in bend yield point in elongation.

69. Work organisation and workforce vulnerability to non-employment: evidence from OECD's survey on adult skills (PIAAC)

Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between the different forms of work organisation in workplaces and the vulnerability of the workforce to non-employment within countries taking part in the Programme for the Assessment of Adults Competencies (PIAAC) – a cross-country survey carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It uses hierarchical cluster analysis to define five forms of work organisation based on the description given by employees of the tasks they perform. Then multilevel logistic regression is used to evaluate their impact on vulnerability to non-employment. The latter is defined as being currently non-employed while having been employed at some point during the last twelve months previous the PIAAC survey. The results show indeed a significant impact of work organisation on vulnerability to non-employment after controlling for relevant job and personal characteristics. In particular, employees in learning forms of work organisation, where they have a certain degree of discretion in the planning of their activities and time, are the least vulnerable. We also identify national policies which are likely to influence the individual probability of being vulnerable to non-employment in relation to the different forms of work organisation. Our first results suggest that active labour market policies amplify the protective effect of Discretionary Learning, while the characteristics of the industrial relations system, like centralisation of wage bargaining and employment protection legislation, favour the capacity of the Constrained Learning form of work organisation to secure employment.

Abstract

Nanotechnology is now recognized as a priority area of researches. Despite its rapid development, the literature contains a paucity of evidence for the effect of nanoparticles on the biochemical plasma parameters of experimental animals. This paper determines the biochemical parameters reflecting the functional state of the rat vital organs. Intravenous administration of a standardized Fe3O4 nanopowder solution has shown reversible changes in the biochemical parameter of plasma.

Abstract

Short episodes of electrical stimulation were applied to the right quadriceps muscle of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy subjects at different times during 60 sec sustained voluntary muscle contractions at 0 to 100% levels of maximal voluntarily generated joint torque. The amplitude of electrically induced increments of torque (delta T) has been shown to depend upon both the level of muscular contraction and time from the beginning of the contraction. The dependence of delta T upon the time from the beginning of contraction has been assumed to reflect muscle fatigue. Patients with MS demonstrated an apparent involvement of central neurogenic mechanisms in fatigue manifested as a drop in muscle torque during sustained contractions at 75 and 100% levels when electrical stimulation was able to induce considerable increments in muscle torque. These patients also demonstrated a dependence of delta T upon the contraction level suggesting that they did not produce maximal voluntary contraction torque in the pre-trial. Fatigue in MS is due to central, neurogenic factors and does not seem to involve any myogenic factors such as might be related to secondary muscle changes due to the long-standing disorder. The subjective feeling of tiredness ('fatigue') may be related to a dissociation between central motor commands ('effort') and their mechanical consequences.
