Abstract

Aims: Vegetation‐plot records provide information on the presence and cover or abundance of plants co‐occurring in the same community. Vegetation‐plot data are spread across research groups, environmental agencies and biodiversity research centers and, thus, are rarely accessible at continental or global scales. Here we present the sPlot database, which collates vegetation plots worldwide to allow for the exploration of global patterns in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity at the plant community level. Results: sPlot version 2.1 contains records from 1,121,244 vegetation plots, which comprise 23,586,216 records of plant species and their relative cover or abundance in plots collected worldwide between 1885 and 2015. We complemented the information for each plot by retrieving climate and soil conditions and the biogeographic context (e.g., biomes) from external sources, and by calculating community‐weighted means and variances of traits using gap‐filled data from the global plant trait database TRY. Moreover, we created a phylogenetic tree for 50,167 out of the 54,519 species identified in the plots. We present the first maps of global patterns of community richness and community‐weighted means of key traits. Conclusions: The availability of vegetation plot data in sPlot offers new avenues for vegetation analysis at the global scale.

Abstract

The European semi-dry grasslands belong to the most species-rich vegetation types of the northern hemisphere and form an important part of habitat mosaics of the forest-steppe zone. However, a comprehensive evaluation of compositional variation and phytosociological classification of these grasslands is still missing. For our syntaxonomic revision, we used a dataset of 34,173 vegetation plot records (relevés) from Central and Eastern Europe which were assigned to the class Festuco-Brometea using the diagnostic species listed in the EuroVegChecklist. To determine the diagnostic species of the orders, we used a TWINSPAN classification of the whole dataset. 15,449 relevés were assigned to the order Brachypodietalia pinnati, which corresponds to semi-dry grasslands. This subset was again classified with TWINSPAN. We established formal definitions for the following alliances: Mesobromion erecti, Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati (incl. Fragario-Trifolion montani, Agrostio-Avenulion schellianae, Scabioso ochroleucae-Poion angustifoliae and Adonido vernalis-Stipion tirsae), Scorzonerion villosae and Chrysopogono-Danthonion. Another alliance, Armerion elongatae (= Koelerio-Phleion phleoidis p.p.), is transitional towards the class Koelerio-Corynephoretea and its status needs further evaluation. We also established formal definitions of all associations of the Mesobromion and Cirsio-Brachypodion within the study area. Associations were identified using (i) the TWINSPAN classification of the whole order, (ii) TWINSPAN classifications of regionally restricted data sets (usually all Brachypodietalia plots of one country) and (iii) existing national classification schemes. All formal definitions were written in the expert system language of the JUICE program. Abstract

GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). Following a previous Long Database Report (Dengler et al. 2018, Phytocoenologia 48, 331–347), we provide here the first update on content and functionality of GrassPlot. The current version (GrassPlot v. 2.00) contains a total of 190,673 plots of different grain sizes across 28,171 independent plots, with 4,654 nested-plot series including at least four grain sizes. The database has improved its content as well as its functionality, including addition and harmonization of header data (land use, information on nestedness, structure and ecology) and preparation of species composition data. Currently, GrassPlot data are intensively used for broad-scale analyses of different aspects of alpha and beta diversity in grassland ecosystems.

Abstract

Aims: River gravel bars are endangered habitats in Europe. However, classification schemes of their vegetation and habitat types differ among European countries, and they are even ignored in some national schemes. This causes problems in conservation planning, monitoring and management. Hence we aimed at building the first unified vegetation classification for river gravel‐bar habitats across European mountain systems. Location: Europe. Methods: In total 4,769 vegetation plot records of river gravel‐bar plant communities were collected from national, regional or private databases, digitized from the literature and newly collected in the field. A hierarchical classification expert system with formal definitions of vegetation types was created. The definitions combined the criteria of presence or cover of groups of species with similar ecology or single species narrowly specialized to a particular gravel‐bar habitat. The TWINSPAN classification was applied to early‐successional vegetation types to check whether the classification based on formal definitions was supported by the results of unsupervised classification. Similarity patterns among vegetation types were visualized using the detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) ordination. Results: Early‐successional and scrub gravel‐bar vegetation types were respectively classified into two classes: Thlaspietea rotundifolii and Salicetea purpureae. Eleven associations and four alliances (Calamagrostion pseudophragmitae, Epilobion fleischeri, Salicion cantabricae and Salicion eleagno‐daphnoidis) were defined formally. Based on a critical revision, some associations or alliances defined in the previous literature were merged or discarded. The main gradient in variability within the gravel‐bar vegetation is connected with the altitudinal gradient, biogeographical variation, local hydromorphological processes and various successional changes. Conclusions: The first unified and formalized classification system of the European mountain river gravel‐bar vegetation was created, and species composition, ecology and distribution of these types were characterized. The syntaxonomical nomenclature of these types was checked and revised. This study provides a base for conservation planning of these threatened and rapidly disappearing habitats. Abstract

International audience; Background: Ecological indicator values (EIVs) have a long tradition in vegetation ecological research in Europe. EIVs characterise the ecological optimum of species along major environmental gradients using ordinal scales. Calculating mean indicator values per plot is an effective way of bioindication. Following first systems in Russia and Central Europe, about two dozen EIV systems have been published for various parts of Europe.Aims: As there was no EIV system available at European scale that could be used for broad- scale analyses, e.g. in the context of the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), we develop such a system for the first time for the vascular plants of Europe.Location: Europe.Methods: We compiled all national and major regional EIV systems and harmonized their plant nomenclature with a newly developed contemporary European taxonomic backbone (EuroSL 1.0). Using regression, we rescaled the individual EIV systems for the main parameters to continent-wide quasi-metric scales, ranging from 1 to 99. The data from each individual system were then translated into a probability curve approximated with a normal distribution, weighed with the logarithm of the area represented and summed up across the systems. From the European density curve we extracted then a mean and a variance, which characterise the distribution of this species along this particular ecological gradient.Results and conclusions: Our consensus approach of integrating the expert knowledge of all existing EIV systems allowed deriving the first consistent description of the ecological behaviour for a significant part of the European vascular flora. The resulting Ecological Indicator Values of Europe (EIVE) 1.0 will be published open access to allow bioindication beyond country borders. Future releases of EIVE might contain more parameters, non- vascular plants and regionalisation or could be re-adjusted and extended to hitherto non- covered species through co-occurrence data from EVA.

Abstract

Background & Aims: Steppe grasslands contribute a major part to the overall biodiversity of Central and Eastern Europe. However, the area of species-rich grasslands has strongly declined during the last century. A consistent supra-national classification of these habitats is urgently needed as a basis for their effective conservation and monitoring. Material & Methods: We studied main phytosociological patterns within the Pontic- Pannonian steppe grasslands using a large dataset of vegetation plots covering the whole Carpathian Basin (E Austria, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, N Croatia and N Serbia) as well as Ukraine and adjacent regions in S Poland and SW Russia (Bryansk region). Altogether 43 706 relevés from 11 countries were gathered. Species taxonomy and nomenclature was unified according to the Euro+Med Checklist (www.emplantbase. org). Critical species were merged to aggregates. From this initial data set, we selected all relevés with the presence of at least one (of 143 pre-defined) diagnostic species of the target vegetation types (steppe meadows, meadow steppes and grass steppes), of rocky steppes or of Pannonian sand steppes. Thus, we included all units traditionally included or closely related to the Festuco- Brometea class. Relevés with a plot size 100 m², and relevés with a shrub or tree layer covering >10% were excluded. To avoid bias due to oversampling of some areas, we applied a geographically stratified random resampling. The resampled data set (17 993 relevés) was classified using TWINSPAN. Main Results & Interpretations: The classes of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Nardetea, Festuco-Brometea and Koelerio-Corynephoretea were well separated in the classification. The position of the Festucetalia vaginatae (Pontic- Pannonian sandy steppes) within the Koelerio- Corynephoretea was confirmed. The Agrostion vinealis (steppic meadows on intermittently wet floodplains) was grouped together with the Deschampsion caespitosae, while the meadow steppes classified as the Trifolion montani were closely related to the Brometalia erecti. The delimitation between the Festucion valesiacae and the Stipion lessingianae was reproduced only partly and needs further evaluation. Outlook: As next step, a detailed classification of the Brometalia erecti (incl. the Trifolion montani) and the Festucetalia valesiacae at the association level will be elaborated.

Abstract

Vegetation-plot databases have enormous potential for biodiversity research and for developing systems of vegetation and/or habitat classification. In Europe there are about 2 million vegetation-plot records stored electronically. However, this information is mainly used on national or sub-national scales. It is an urgent task for vegetation scientists and biodiversity managers to develop international synergies addressing supra-national and continental scales. Here we present two projects that are being pursued by the IAVS Working Group European Vegetation Survey (EVS ; www.euroveg.org). As a key infrastructure for unifying the vegetation-plot data, the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) has been launched, aiming at establishment of a centralized European vegetation database and stimulating international feedbacks between database managers and potential users. EVA is conceived as a dynamic system for sharing data among national databases while they would continue their normal, country-focused activities. The EVA consortium has developed Data Property and Governance Rules that guarantee the rights of the data contributors are respected. Individual data contributors can decide on the mode of data availability from restricted to open access. At the moment the TURBOVEG version 3 program and the SynBioSys Europe information system are being developed as the management software for EVA. Parallel to the EVA development, the European Vegetation Survey is developing projects to benefit from this infrastructure but also to involve other collaborators beyond the EVA consortium. An example is the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´, the main aim of which is the compilation and analysis of floristic and geographical information related to European phytosociological alliances as defined in the new European syntaxonomical overview (EuroVegChecklist, Mucina et al. in preparation). This information will be summarized in the form of constancy-based synoptic tables for all alliances and related outputs. At the moment 22 extensive datasets from 18 European countries are involved in this project. The information collated by the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´ will be essential for offering a parameterized overview of European vegetation types for researchers and conservation managers. Parallel with these scientific projects, the European Vegetation Survey team is working with the European Environment Agency to supply real data and scientific background to the EUNIS habitat classification which is used as a crucial tool of nature conservation survey, planning and reporting in Europe. Both EVA and the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´ are open to new partners.

Abstract

Vegetation-plot databases have enormous potential for biodiversity research and for developing systems of vegetation and/or habitat classification. In Europe there are about 2 million vegetation-plot records stored electronically. However, this information is mainly used on national or sub-national scales. It is an urgent task for vegetation scientists and biodiversity managers to develop international synergies addressing supra-national and continental scales. Here we present two projects that are being pursued by the IAVS Working Group European Vegetation Survey (EVS ; www.euroveg.org). As a key infrastructure for unifying the vegetation-plot data, the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) has been launched, aiming at establishment of a centralized European vegetation database and stimulating international feedbacks between database managers and potential users. EVA is conceived as a dynamic system for sharing data among national databases while they would continue their normal, country-focused activities. The EVA consortium has developed Data Property and Governance Rules that guarantee the rights of the data contributors are respected. Individual data contributors can decide on the mode of data availability from restricted to open access. At the moment the TURBOVEG version 3 program and the SynBioSys Europe information system are being developed as the management software for EVA. Parallel to the EVA development, the European Vegetation Survey is developing projects to benefit from this infrastructure but also to involve other collaborators beyond the EVA consortium. An example is the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´, the main aim of which is the compilation and analysis of floristic and geographical information related to European phytosociological alliances as defined in the new European syntaxonomical overview (EuroVegChecklist, Mucina et al. in preparation). This information will be summarized in the form of constancy-based synoptic tables for all alliances and related outputs. At the moment 22 extensive datasets from 18 European countries are involved in this project. The information collated by the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´ will be essential for offering a parameterized overview of European vegetation types for researchers and conservation managers. Parallel with these scientific projects, the European Vegetation Survey team is working with the European Environment Agency to supply real data and scientific background to the EUNIS habitat classification which is used as a crucial tool of nature conservation survey, planning and reporting in Europe. Both EVA and the ´Braun-Blanquet Project´ are open to new partners.

86. Distribution, morphology and habitats of Elatine triandra(Elatinaceae) in Europe, with particular reference to the central part of the continent

Abstract

AbstractElatine triandraSchkuhr is the most variable and widespread species within the genus ElatineL.; it has been recorded in all continents, except Antarctica, but it is mainly located in Europe. The study is based on an extensive data set of European literature, herbaria and web data that covers the period 1828–2012. The range of the species in Europe is disjunctive, covering the southern and western parts of the Central European Plain and the southern part of the Fennoscandian Shield. At a smaller scale, the species can also be found along some river valleys. In Central Europe many localities, particularly isolated ones in the northern part of the range, are now only historical. From the data set we determined that E. triandramay be best observed between May and October. We found that species records show a near-significant shift since 1828. Depending on the environmental conditions, individuals of the taxon develop as one of two morphs: terrestrial or aquatic. The aquatic morph is characterized by stems, internodes, lamina and petiole that are twice as long as those of the terrestrial form. Elatine triandraseeds show consistent characteristics, both in terms of morphs and populations. Our studies show that the best diagnostic features, in addition to the construction of flowers, are the size, shape and surface structure of seeds. In Central Europe, E. triandraoccurs exclusively in communities classified as Isoëto-Nano-Juncetea.

Abstract

This paper presents a syntaxonomical revision and statistical determination of diagnostic, constant and dominant species of higher syntaxa of Poland based on relevés stored in the Polish Vegetation Database. All the analyses were performed on a data set consisting of 43,686 relevés containing 2,853 species of vascular plants, bryophytes, algae and lichenized fungi. The data set was subjected to formalized and hierarchical classification, which revealed 44 classes and 153 alliances. Abstract

Communities of purple moor-grass meadows are generally decreasing. Many important problems of classification and phytogeography are connected with them. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate changes in species diversity that took place after mowing of Molinion meadows in Kampinoski National Park was discontinued from 1993 to 2006. Selected Molinion meadows in the park were evaluated in terms of their biological diversity. The data collected represented meadows that were still maintained, as well as meadows that had been abandoned at different times in the past. Biodiversity was evaluated using standard ecological indices and Disturbance Index (Z). In general, the Disturbance Index showed an increase in plant community forms that were abandoned or invaded by alien species. An association that was most like the typical form was seen in well maintained meadows, which suggests that the Disturbance Index continually rises with time after a meadow is abandoned. Ecological strategies and mowing tolerance were determined with the help of the BIOLFLOR database. Numerical classification revealed a highly diverse pattern of variability in the meadows examined. Correlations between ecological indicators and phytocenotic variability in Molinion meadows were also evaluated. Lindernia procumbensin Poland: the relationship between weather conditions and the occurrence of the speciesNew data regarding the occurrence of Lindernia procumbens(prostrate false pimpernel) are discussed and its current geographical range in Poland is given. A comparison of its past and present distribution in Poland indicates an advancement of the distribution limit northwards, which may be caused by climate changes, mostly, by an increased number of heat waves in the warm half-year. The relationship between the occurrence of the species and specific meteorological conditions, especially, unusually hot and dry summer periods, is analysed using long-term meteorological surveys.

Abstract

Aim: The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation-plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation-plot database, and compile statistically-derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location: Europe. Methods: We developed the classification expert system EUNIS-ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set-theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species-to-habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results: Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man-made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Conclusions: EUNIS habitats were characterized for the first time in terms of their species composition and distribution, based on a classification of a European database of vegetation plots using the newly developed electronic expert system EUNISESy. The data provided and the expert system have considerable potential for future use in European nature conservation planning, monitoring and assessment.

Abstract

Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m2 and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/datab ases/Grass landD ivers ityEx plorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. While the amount of data in the underlying GrassPlot database and their spatial coverage are smaller than in other extensive vegetation-plot databases, species recordings in GrassPlot are on average more complete, making it a valuable complementary data source in macroecology.

Abstract

Motivation: Assessing biodiversity status and trends in plant communities is critical for understanding, quantifying and predicting the effects of global change on ecosystems. Vegetation plots record the occurrence or abundance of all plant species co-occurring within delimited local areas. This allows species absences to be inferred, information seldom provided by existing global plant datasets. Although many vegetation plots have been recorded, most are not available to the global research community. A recent initiative, called ‘sPlot’, compiled the first global vegetation plot database, and continues to grow and curate it. The sPlot database, however, is extremely unbalanced spatially and environmentally, and is not open-access. Here, we address both these issues by (a) resampling the vegetation plots using several environmental variables as sampling strata and (b) securing permission from data holders of 105 local-to-regional datasets to openly release data. We thus present sPlotOpen, the largest open-access dataset of vegetation plots ever released. sPlotOpen can be used to explore global diversity at the plant community level, as ground truth data in remote sensing applications, or as a baseline for biodiversity monitoring. Main types of variable contained: Vegetation plots (n = 95,104) recording cover or abundance of naturally co-occurring vascular plant species within delimited areas. sPlotOpen contains three partially overlapping resampled datasets (c. 50,000 plots each), to be used as replicates in global analyses. Besides geographical location, date, plot size, biome, elevation, slope, aspect, vegetation type, naturalness, coverage of various vegetation layers, and source dataset, plot-level data also include community-weighted means and variances of 18 plant functional traits from the TRY Plant Trait Database. Spatial location and grain: Global, 0.01–40,000 m². Time period and grain: 1888–2015, recording dates. Major taxa and level of measurement: 42,677 vascular plant taxa, plot-level records. Software format: Three main matrices (.csv), relationally linked.

Abstract

Aims: Vegetation‐plot records provide information on the presence and cover or abundance of plants co‐occurring in the same community. Vegetation‐plot data are spread across research groups, environmental agencies and biodiversity research centers and, thus, are rarely accessible at continental or global scales. Here we present the sPlot database, which collates vegetation plots worldwide to allow for the exploration of global patterns in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity at the plant community level. Results: sPlot version 2.1 contains records from 1,121,244 vegetation plots, which comprise 23,586,216 records of plant species and their relative cover or abundance in plots collected worldwide between 1885 and 2015. We complemented the information for each plot by retrieving climate and soil conditions and the biogeographic context (e.g., biomes) from external sources, and by calculating community‐weighted means and variances of traits using gap‐filled data from the global plant trait database TRY. Moreover, we created a phylogenetic tree for 50,167 out of the 54,519 species identified in the plots. We present the first maps of global patterns of community richness and community‐weighted means of key traits. Conclusions: The availability of vegetation plot data in sPlot offers new avenues for vegetation analysis at the global scale.

Abstract

This paper presents a syntaxonomical revision and statistical determination of diagnostic, constant and dominant species of higher syntaxa of Poland based on releves stored in the Polish Vegetation Database. All the analyses were performed on a data set consisting of 43,686 releves containing 2,853 species of vascular plants, bryophytes, algae and lichenized fungi. The data set was subjected to formalized and hierarchical classification, which revealed 44 classes and 153 alliances. Abstract

The species richness and structure of Spergulo-Chrysanthemetum segeti have been assessed on the basis of 25 phytosociological relevés made by the Braun-Blanquet method in the Drawsko Lakeland (Poland). Two variants have been distinguished, Spergulo-Chrysanthemetum segeti chamomilletosum typicum and Spergulo-Chrysanthemetum segeti chamomilletosum with Plantago intermedia. The paper presents the distribution and analytical characteristics of this subatlantic association against the background of habitat conditions.

© 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. Abstract

Nerio-Tamaricetea described by Braun-Blanquet and de Bolòs (1958) includes dwarf woodlands, scrubs and tall grass communities developing on initial soils of river beds, creeks and temporary pools of fresh, brackish or saline water, without running water during long periods of the year. According to Mucina et al. (2016), one order, Tamaricetalia africanae, and six alliances have been distinguished in the Mediterranean region: Tamaricion africanae, Tamaricion boveano-canariensis, Rubo ulmifolii- Nerion oleandri, Securinegion buxifoliae, Rubo sancti-Nerion oleandri and Tamaricion dalmaticae. The latter two belong to E Mediterranean group of alliances. The Tamaricion dalmaticae alliance was described for thermo- and meso-Mediterranean belts on the eastern Adriatic coast: in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania (Jasprica et al. 2016). Associations of this alliance mostly appear under the halophytic conditions. Along other characteristics, this makes the Tamaricion dalmaticae alliance analogous to the W Mediterranean Tamaricion africanae. The aim of this study is to classify and describe all plant communities of the Nerio- Tamaricetea covering the entire eastern Adriatic coast and islands from north Croatia to south Albania, and to relate their species composition, chorotypes and life forms to environmental factors using Pignatti ecological indicator values. For each association, a brief description of its syntaxonomic and nomenclatural vicissitudes, the holotypus, locus classicus, distribution range, diagnostic, frequent and dominant taxa were reported. The analysis are based on relevés already published in phytosociological literature and own relevés collected in the period between 2008 and 2018.

Abstract

Aims: Although many phytosociological studies have provided detailed local and regional descriptions of coastal dune vegetation, a unified classification of this vegetation in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin has been missing. Our aim is to produce a formalized classification of this vegetation and to identify the main factors driving its plant species composition at a continental scale. LocationAtlantic and Baltic coasts of Europe, Mediterranean Basin and the Black Sea region. - Methods: We compiled a database of 30,759 plots of coastal vegetation, which were resampled to reduce unbalanced sampling effort, obtaining a data set of 11,769 plots. We classified these plots with TWINSPAN, interpreted the resulting clusters and used them for developing formal definitions of phytosociological alliances of coastal dune vegetation, which were included in an expert system for automatic vegetation classification. We related the alliances to climatic factors and described their biogeographic features and their position in the coastal vegetation zonation. We examined and visualized the floristic relationships among these alliances by means of DCA ordination. - Results: We defined 18 alliances of coastal dune vegetation, including the newly described Centaureo cuneifoliae-Verbascion pinnatifidi from the Aegean region. The main factors underlying the differentiation of these alliances were biogeographic and macroclimatic contrasts between the Atlantic-Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, along with ecological differences between shifting and stable dunes. The main difference in species composition was between the Atlantic-Baltic and Mediterranean-Black Sea regions. Within the former region, the main difference was driven by the different ecological conditions between shifting and stable dunes, whereas within the latter, the main difference was biogeographic between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. - Conclusions: The first formal classification of the European coastal dune vegetation was established, accompanied by an expert system containing the formal definitions of alliances, which can be applied to new data sets. The new classification system critically revised the previous concepts and integrated them into a consistent framework, which reflects the main gradients in species composition driven by biogeographic influences, macroclimate and the position of the sites in the coast-inland zonation of the dune systems. A revision of the class concept used in EuroVegChecklist is also proposed.

Abstract

GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). GrassPlot collects plot records (relevés) from grasslands and other open habitats of the Palaearctic biogeographic realm. It focuses on precisely delimited plots of eight standard grain sizes (0.0001; 0.001; ... 1,000 m²) and on nested-plot series with at least four different grain sizes. The usage of GrassPlot is regulated through Bylaws that intend to balance the interests of data contributors and data users. The current version (v. 1.00) contains data for approximately 170,000 plots of different sizes and 2,800 nested-plot series. The key components are richness data and metadata. However, most included datasets also encompass compositional data. About 14,000 plots have near-complete records of terricolous bryophytes and lichens in addition to vascular plants. At present, GrassPlot contains data from 36 countries throughout the Palaearctic, spread across elevational gradients and major grassland types. GrassPlot with its multi-scale and multi-taxon focus complements the larger international vegetation-plot databases, such as the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and the global database “sPlot”. Its main aim is to facilitate studies on the scale- and taxon-dependency of biodiversity patterns and drivers along macroecological gradients. GrassPlot is a dynamic database and will expand through new data collection coordinated by the elected Governing Board. We invite researchers with suitable data to join GrassPlot. Researchers with project ideas addressable with GrassPlot data are welcome to submit proposals to the Governing Board.
