Search

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

We present an approach enabling generation of narrow spin wave beams in thin homogeneous ferromagnetic films. The main idea is to match the wave vector of the spin wave with that corresponding to the spectral maximum of the exciting microwave magnetic field only locally, in the region of space from which the beam should be launched. We show that this can be achieved with the aid of a properly designed coplanar waveguide transducer generating a nonuniform microwave magnetic field. The resulting two-dimensional spin wave beams obtained in micromagnetic simulations propagate over distances of several micrometers. The proposed approach requires neither inhomogeneity of the ferromagnetic film nor nonuniformity of the biasing magnetic field, and it can be generalized to yield multiple spin wave beams of different width at the same frequency. Other possible excitation scenarios and applications of spin wave beam magnonics are also discussed.

We study propagation of the Gaussian beam of spin waves and its reflection from the edge of thin yttrium-iron-garnet film with in-plane magnetization perpendicular to this edge. We have performed micromagnetic simulations supported by analytical calculations to investigate influence of the surface magnetic anisotropy present at the film edge on the reflection, especially in the context of the Goos-Hanchen effect. We have shown the appearance of a negative lateral shift between reflected and incident spin wave beams' spots. This shift is particularly sensitive to the surface magnetic anisotropy value and is a result of the Goos-Hanchen shift which is sensitive to the magnitude of the anisotropy and of the bending of spin wave beam. We have demonstrated that the demagnetizing field provide graded increase of the refractive index for spin waves, which is responsible for the bending.

A comprehensive review of physics at an e+e- Linear Collider in the energy range of sqrt{s}=92 GeV--3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low energy as well as astroparticle physics.The report focuses in particular on Higgs boson, Top quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the Standard Model physics such as Supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. We investigate theoretically skyrmion magnonic crystal, i.e., the dynamics of the magnetization in a chain of the ferromagnetic nanodots being in skyrmion magnetic configuration. We show that collective excitations are possible to be observed in the structure. We present the dispersion relation of the coupled skyrmions. It exhibit a periodical property in dependence on wave vector, characteristic feature of the band structure in magnonic crystals. Spatial analysis of the magnetization amplitude associated with the magnonic bands confirms type of the excited modes, as breathing and clockwise gyrotropic dynamical skyrmions. An attempt is made to simulate the disclosure of underground soldiers in terms of theory of networks. The coupling mechanism between the network nodes is the possibility that a disclosed soldier is going to disclose also his acquaintances. We calculate the fraction of disclosed soldiers as dependent on the fraction of those who, once disclosed, reveal also their colleagues. We studied finite Fibonacci sequence of Co and Py stripes aligned side-by-side and in direct contact with each other. Calculations based on continuous model including exchange and dipole interactions were performed for structures feasible for fabrication and characterization of main properties of magnonic quasicrystals. We have shown the fractal structure of the magnonic spectrum with a number of magnonics gaps of different width. Also localization of spin waves in quasicrystals and existence of surface spin waves in finite quaiscrystal structure is demonstrated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The magnonic band gaps of the two types of planar one-dimensional magnonic crystals comprised of the periodic array of the metallic stripes on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film and YIG film with an array of grooves was analyzed experimentally and theoretically. In such periodic magnetic structures the propagating magnetostatic surface spin waves were excited and detected by microstripe transducers with vector network analyzer and by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Properties of the magnonic band gaps were explained with the help of the finite element calculations. The important influence of the nonreciprocal properties of the spin wave dispersion induced by metallic stripes on the magnonic band gap width and its dependence on the external magnetic field has been shown. The usefulness of both types of the magnonic crystals for potential applications and possibility for miniaturization are discussed.

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. An effect of metallization of the magnonic crystal surface on the band gaps formation in the spectra of the surface spin wave (SSW) is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The structures under consideration are one-dimensional magnonic crystals based on yttrium iron garnet with an array of etched grooves with metal screen on the top of the corrugated surface and without it. Due to nonreciprocity of propagation of the SSW the shift of band gap to higher frequency and from the border of the Brillouin zone in presence of conducting overlayer was measured in transmission line experiment. Results of numerical calculations and model analysis are in agreement with experimental data and give further insight into origin of the band gap and properties of the nonreciprocal SSW in metallized magnonic crystals. This gives positive answer to the outstanding question about possibility of detection of magnonic band gaps in the spectra of the spin waves with nonreciprocal dispersion in magnonic crystals and creates potential for new applications and improvements of already existing prototype magnonic devices.

Two models of a queue are proposed: a human queue and two lines of vehicles before a narrowing. In both models, a queuer tries to evaluate his waiting time, taking into account the delay caused by intruders who jump to the queue front. As the collected statistics of such events is very limited, the evaluation can give very long times. Two aspects of fractal networks are considered: the community structure and the class structure, where classes of nodes appear as a consequence of a local symmetry of nodes. The analysed systems are the networks constructed for two selected symmetric fractals: the Sierpinski triangle and the Koch curve. Communities are searched for by means of a set of differential equations. Overlapping nodes which belong to two different communities are identified by adding some noise to the initial connectivity matrix. Then, a node can be characterized by a spectrum of probabilities of belonging to different communities. Our main goal is that the overlapping nodes with the same spectra belong to the same class.

We study the effect of one-side metallization of a uniform ferromagnetic thin film on its spin-wave dispersion relation in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. Due to the finite conductivity of the metallic cover layer on the ferromagnetic film the spin-wave dispersion relation may be nonreciprocal only in a limited wave-vector range. We provide an approximate analytical solution for the spin-wave frequency, discuss its validity and compare it with numerical results. The dispersion is analyzed systematically by varying the parameters of the ferromagnetic film, the metal cover layer and the value of the external magnetic field. The conclusions drawn from this analysis allow us to define a structure based on a 30 nm thick CoFeB film with an experimentally accessible nonreciprocal dispersion relation in a relatively wide wave-vector range., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present the observation of a complete bandgap and collective spin wave excitation in two-dimensional magnonic crystals comprised of arrays of nanoscale antidots and nanodots, respectively. Considering that the frequencies dealt with here fall in the microwave band, these findings can be used for the development of suitable magnonic metamaterials and spin wave based signal processing. We also present the application of a numerical procedure, to compute the dispersion relations of spin waves for any high symmetry direction in the first Brillouin zone. The results obtained from this procedure has been reproduced and verified by the well established plane wave method for an antidot lattice, when magnetization dynamics at antidot boundaries is pinned. The micromagnetic simulation based method can also be used to obtain iso--frequency countours of spin waves. Iso--frequency contours are analougous of the Fermi surfaces and hence, they have the potential to radicalize our understanding of spin wave dynamics. The physical origin of bands, partial and full magnonic bandgaps has been explained by plotting the spatial distribution of spin wave energy spectral density. Although, unfettered by rigid assumptions and approximations, which afflict most analytical methods used in the study of spin wave dynamics, micromagnetic simulations tend to be computationally demanding. Thus, the observation of collective spin wave excitation in the case of nanodot arrays, which can obviate the need to perform simulations may also prove to be valuable.

An order--disorder phase transition is observed for Ising-like systems even for arbitrarily chosen probabilities of spins flips [K. Malarz et al, Int. J. Mod. Phys. C 22, 719 (2011)]. For such athermal dynamics one must define $(z+1)$ spin flips probabilities $w(n)$, where $z$ is a number of the nearest-neighbours for given regular lattice and $n=0,\cdots,z$ indicates the number of nearest spins with the same value as the considered spin. Recently, such dynamics has been successfully applied for the simulation of a cooperative and competitive strategy selection by pedestrians in crowd [P. Gawro\'nski et al, Acta Phys. Pol. A 123, 522 (2013)]. For the triangular lattice ($z=6$) and flips probabilities dependence on a single control parameter $x$ chosen as $w(0)=1$, $w(1)=3x$, $w(2)=2x$, $w(3)=x$, $w(4)=x/2$, $w(5)=x/4$, $w(6)=x/6$ the ordered phase (where most of pedestrians adopt the same strategy) vanishes for $x>x_C\approx 0.429$. In order to introduce long-range interactions between pedestrians the bonds of triangular lattice are randomly rewired with the probability $p$. The amount of rewired bonds can be interpreted as the probability of communicating by mobile phones. The paper presents results for zinc oxide films grown at low temperature regime by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). We discuss electrical properties of such films and show that low temperature deposition results in oxygen-rich ZnO layers in which free carrier concentration is very low. For optimized ALD process it can reach the level of 10^15 cm-3, while mobility of electrons is between 20 and 50 cm2/Vs. Electrical parameters of ZnO films deposited by ALD at low temperature regime are appropriate for constructing of the ZnO-based p-n and Schottky junctions. Despite many efforts the origin of a ferromagnetic (FM) response in ZnMnO and ZnCoO is still not clear. Magnetic investigations of our samples, not discussed here, show that the room temperature FM response is observed only in alloys with a non-uniform Mn or Co distribution. Thus, the control of their distribution is crucial for explanation of contradicted magnetic properties of ZnCoO and ZnMnO reported till now. In the present review we discuss advantages of the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) growth method, which enables us to control uniformity of ZnMnO and ZnCoO alloys. We theoretically study the spin-wave spectra in magnonic waveguides periodically patterned with square anti-dots in nanoscale with pinned magnetization at the edges. We show that the breaking of the mirror symmetry of the waveguide by the structural changes can result in a magnonic band gap closing. These intrinsic symmetry breaking can be compensated by properly chosen asymmetric external bias magnetic field, i.e. in an extrinsic way. As a result the magnonic gaps existing in the ideal symmetric structure can be recovered. The model used for the explanation also suggests that this idea could be generic both for exchange and dipolar interaction regimes of spin-waves and also for other types of waves, e.g., electrons in the graphene ribbons., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In an emergency situation, imitation of strategies of neighbours can lead to an order-disorder phase transition, where spatial clusters of pedestrians adopt the same strategy. We assume that there are two strategies, cooperating and competitive, which correspond to a smaller or larger desired velocity. Simulations of the Simmel effect are performed for agents in a scale-free social network. The social hierarchy of an agent is determined by the degree of her node. Particular features, once selected by a highly connected agent, became common in lower class but soon fall out of fashion and extinct. Simulations are performed according to the Axelrod model of culture dissemination, with modified mechanism of repulsion. Previously, repulsion was considered by Radillo-Diaz et al (Phys. Rev. E 80 (2009) 066107) as dependent on a predefined threshold. Here the probabilities of attraction and repulsion are calculated from the number of cells in the same states. We also investigate the influence of some homogeneity, introduced to the initial state. As the result of the probabilistic definition of repulsion, the ordered state vanishes. A small cluster of a few percent of population is retained only if in the initial state a set of agents is prepared in the same state. We conclude that the modelled imitation is successful only with respect to agents, and not only their features.

A series of (ZnO)m(CoO)n digital alloys and superlattices grown by atomic layer deposition has been investigated by a range of experimental methods. The data provide evidences that the Co interdiffusion in the digital alloy structures is sufficient to produce truly random Zn1-xCoxO mixed crystals with x up to 40%. Conversely, in the superlattice structures the interdiffusion is not strong enough to homogenize the Co content along the growth direction results in the formation of (Zn,Co)O films with spatially modulated Co concentrations. All structures deposited at 160\circC show magnetic properties specific to dilute magnetic semiconductors with localized spins S = 3/2 coupled by strong but short range antiferromagnetic interactions that lead to low temperature spin-glass freezing. It is demonstrated that ferromagnetic-like features, visible exclusively in layers grown at 200\circC and above, are associated with an interfacial mesh of metallic Co granules residing between the substrate and the (Zn,Co)O layer. This explains why the magnitude of ferromagnetic signal is virtually independent of the film thickness as well as elucidates the origin of magnetic anisotropy. Our conclusions have been derived for layers in which the Co concentration, distribution, and aggregation have been determined by: secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with capabilities allowing for chemical analysis; x-ray absorption near-edge structure; extended x-ray absorption fine-structure; x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and x-ray circular magnetic dichroism. Macroscopic properties of these layers have been investigated by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometery and microwave dielectric losses allowing to confirm the important role of metallic inclusions., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures

We demonstrate that room temperature ferromagnetic response (RT FR) of ZnCoO films grown at low temperature by the Atomic layer Deposition (ALD) method is due to Co metal accumulations at the ZnCoO/substrate interface region. Spatio-temporal correlations of intensity of traffic are analysed for one week data collected in the motorway M-30 around Madrid in January 2009. We assume that current state of the Universe can be described by the Inert Doublet Model, containing two scalar doublets, one of which is responsible for EWSB and masses of particles and the second one having no couplings to fermions and being responsible for dark matter. We consider possible evolutions of the Universe to this state during cooling down of the Universe after inflation. We found that in the past Universe could pass through phase states having no DM candidate. In the evolution via such states in addition to a possible EWSB phase transition (2-nd order) the Universe sustained one 1-st order phase transition or two phase transitions of the 2-nd order., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

The communication process in a situation of emergency is discussed within the Scheff theory of shame and pride. The communication involves messages from media and from other persons. Three strategies are considered: selfish (to contact friends), collective (to join other people) and passive (to do nothing). We show that the pure selfish strategy cannot be evolutionarily stable. We have computed the electronic and hole spectra of a 3D superlattice consisting of layers of GaAs rods of finite height arranged in a hexagonal lattice and embedded in an AlGaAs matrix, alternating with spacer layers of homogeneous AlAs. The spectra are calculated in the envelope function approximation, with both light-hole and heavy-hole subbands and hole spin degeneracy taken into account. The application of thick spacers allows to investigate the band structure of isolated layers of cylindrical rods. We estimate the ultimate efficiency of solar energy conversion in a solar cell based on an array of cylindrical quantum dots versus the dot height, and determine the optimal value of this parameter., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Discoveries at the LHC will soon set the physics agenda for future colliders. This report of a CERN Theory Institute includes the summaries of Working Groups that reviewed the physics goals and prospects of LHC running with 10 to 300/fb of integrated luminosity, of the proposed sLHC luminosity upgrade, of the ILC, of CLIC, of the LHeC and of a muon collider. The four Working Groups considered possible scenarios for the first 10/fb of data at the LHC in which (i) a state with properties that are compatible with a Higgs boson is discovered, (ii) no such state is discovered either because the Higgs properties are such that it is difficult to detect or because no Higgs boson exists, (iii) a missing-energy signal beyond the Standard Model is discovered as in some supersymmetric models, and (iv) some other exotic signature of new physics is discovered. In the contexts of these scenarios, the Working Groups reviewed the capabilities of the future colliders to study in more detail whatever new physics may be discovered by the LHC. We consider quantum wire arrays consisting of GaAs rods embedded in Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As and disposed in sites of a square or triangular lattice. The electronic and hole spectra around the conduction band bottom and the valence band top are examined versus geometry of the lattice formed by the rods, concentration of Al in the matrix material, and structural parameters including the filling fraction and the lattice constant. Our calculations use the envelope function and are based on the effective-mass approximation. We show that the electronic and hole spectra resulting from the periodicity of the heterostructure, depend on the factors considered and that the effect of lattice geometry varies substantially with lattice constant. For low lattice constant values the minigaps are significantly wider in the case of triangular lattice, while for high lattice constant values wider minigaps occur in the square lattice-based arrays. In our recent model, the cooperation emerges as a positive feedback between a not-too-bad reputation and an altruistic attitude. Here we introduce a bias of altruism as to favorize members of the same group. The matrix F(i,j) of frequency of cooperation between agents i and j reveals the structure of communities. The Newman algorithm reproduces the initial bias. First realistic estimate of the usefulness of the Photon Linear Collider with linearly polarized photons as analyzer of the CP-parity of Higgs bosons is presented. MSSM Higgs bosons H and A with 300 GeV mass, for the model parameters corresponding to the so called "LHC wedge" region, are considered. When switching from circular to linear photon polarization a significant increase in heavy quark production background, which is no longer suppressed by helicity conservation, and decrease of the Higgs boson production cross sections by a factor of two is expected. Measurement of the heavy neutral MSSM Higgs bosons H and A production in the process gamma gamma --> A, H --> b anti-b at the Photon Linear Collider has been considered in two independent analyses for the parameter range corresponding to the so-called "LHC wedge". Significantly different conclusions were obtained; signal to background ratio 36 vs 2. Here assumptions and results of these two analyses are compared. There are many possibilities for new physics beyond the Standard Model that feature non-standard Higgs sectors. These may introduce new sources of CP violation, and there may be mixing between multiple Higgs bosons or other new scalar bosons. Alternatively, the Higgs may be a composite state, or there may even be no Higgs at all. These non-standard Higgs scenarios have important implications for collider physics as well as for cosmology, and understanding their phenomenology is essential for a full comprehension of electroweak symmetry breaking. This report discusses the most relevant theories which go beyond the Standard Model and its minimal, CP-conserving supersymmetric extension: two-Higgs-doublet models and minimal supersymmetric models with CP violation, supersymmetric models with an extra singlet, models with extra gauge groups or Higgs triplets, Little Higgs models, models in extra dimensions, and models with technicolour or other new strong dynamics. Magnetostatic normal modes are investigated here in elongated rods. The dipolar field resulting from the dipole-dipole interactions is calculated numerically in points of the axis connecting opposite rod face centers (\emph{central axis}) by collecting individual contributions to this field coming from each of the atomic planes perpendicular to the central axis. The applied magnetic field is assumed to be oriented along the central axis, and the magnetization to be uniform throughout the sample. The \emph{frequency} spectrum of magnetostatic waves propagating in the direction of the applied field is found numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshith equation of motion with the spatially \emph{nonhomogeneous} dipolar field taken into account; the mode amplitude \emph{profiles} are depicted as well. While energetically highest modes have \emph{bulk-extended} character, the modes forming the lower part of the spectrum are localized in the subsurface region (\emph{bulk-dead modes}). Between these two mode types, magnetostatic modes of a new type (\emph{comb modes}) are found to occur, characterized by two clearly discernible regions: a zone of fast amplitude oscillations inside the rod, and narrow slow-oscillation regions at the borders. This study deals with the spin wave spectrum in magnetic macrostructure (composed of two ferromagnetic materials) showing a 3D periodicity: spherical ferromagnetic grains disposed in the nodes of a simple cubic crystal lattice are embedded in a matrix with different ferromagnetic properties. It is shown that the \textit{magnonic spectrum} of this composite structure exhibits frequency regions \textit{forbidden} for magnon propagation, and the energy gaps are found to be sensitive to the exchange contrast between the constituent materials as well as to the magnetization contrast. A theory of three-dimensional (3D) hypothetical magnonic crystal (conceived as the magnetic counterpart of the well-known photonic crystal) is developed and applied to explain the existence of a spin-wave frequency gap recently revealed in low-doped manganites $La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3}$ by neutron scattering. A successful confrontation with the experimental results allows us to formulate a working hypothesis that certain manganites could be regarded as 3D magnonic crystals existing in nature., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

New analysis of the heavy, neutral MSSM Higgs bosons H and A production at the Photon Collider is presented for M_A = 200, 250, 300 and 350 GeV in the parameter range corresponding to the so called "LHC wedge" and beyond. The expected precision of the cross section measurement for the process gamma+gamma->A,H->b+bbar and the "discovery reach" of the Photon Collider are compared for different MSSM scenarios. The analysis takes into account all relevant theoretical and experimental issues which could affect the measurement. For MSSM Higgs bosons A and H, for M_A = 200-350 GeV and tan(beta)=7, the statistical precision of the cross-section determination is estimated to be 8-34%, after one year of Photon Collider running, for four considered MSSM parameters sets. As heavy neutral Higgs bosons in this scenario may not be discovered at LHC or at the first stage of the e+e- collider, an opportunity of being a discovery machine is also studied for the Photon Collider., Comment: Presented at the International Linear Collider Workshop LCWS05, Stanford, USA

Hennion {\em et al.}, we obtained a good (though approximate) quantitative agreement with the experimental results. The phononic band structures of two-dimensional solid phononic crystals with different lattice and scatterer symmetry are studied numerically, with three types of lattice (square, triangular and rectangular) and four different scatterer shapes (circle, hexagon, square and rectangle) considered. XY and $Z$ vibration modes are investigated separately. Two types of phononic crystal are considered: one composed of high-density rods embedded in a low-density matrix, the other of low-density rods in a high-density matrix. In the former case, lattice type and polarization being fixed, the broadest gaps are obtained when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice (the shape of a rod is identical with that of the first Brillouin zone); the largest gap width values are observed in triangular lattice-based crystals (compared to those based on square and rectangular lattices), the shape of the corresponding first Brillouin zone being closest to a circle. These rules do not apply to structures in which the density of the rod material is lower than that of the matrix. In this case, when the symmetry of the rods corresponds to that of the lattice, gaps either fail to appear at all, or are much narrower than in other configurations. The effect of other material parameter values (such as the longitudinal and transversal velocity values) on the considered relation proves much lesser., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures
