Search

The First G-APD Cherenkov telescope (FACT) is the first telescope using silicon photon detectors (G-APD aka. SiPM). It is built on the mount of the HEGRA CT3 telescope, still located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, and it is successfully in operation since Oct. 2011. The use of Silicon devices promises a higher photon detection efficiency, more robustness and higher precision than photo-multiplier tubes. The FACT collaboration is investigating with which precision these devices can be operated on the long-term. Currently, the telescope is successfully operated from remote and robotic operation is under development. During the past months of operation, the foreseen monitoring program of the brightest known TeV blazars has been carried out, and first physics results have been obtained including a strong flare of Mrk501. An instantaneous flare alert system is already in a testing phase. This presentation will give an overview of the project and summarize its goals, status and first results.

The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) became operational at La Palma in October 2011. Since summer 2012, due to very smooth and stable operation, it is the first telescope of its kind that is routinely operated from remote, without the need for a data-taking crew on site. In addition, many standard tasks of operation are executed automatically without the need for manual interaction. Based on the experience gained so far, some alterations to improve the safety of the system are under development to allow robotic operation in the future. The existence of an exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle, i.e., X-, during big bang nucleosynthesis can affect primordial light element abundances. Especially, the final abundance of 7Li, mainly originating from the electron capture of 7Be, has been suggested to reduce by the 7Be destruction via the radiative X- capture of 7Be followed by the radiative proton capture of the bound state of 7Be and X- (7BeX). We suggest a new route of 7BeX formation, that is the 7Be charge exchange at the reaction of 7Be3+ ion and X-. The formation rate depends on the number fraction of 7Be3+ ion, the charge exchange cross section of 7Be3+, and the probability that produced excited states 7BeX* are converted to the ground state. We estimate respective quantities affecting the 7BeX formation rate, and find that this reaction pathway can be more important than ordinary radiative recombination of 7Be and X-. The effect of the charge exchange reaction is then shown in a latest nuclear reaction network calculation. The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is designed to detect cosmic gamma-rays with energies from several hundred GeV up to about 10 TeV using the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique. In contrast to former or existing telescopes, the camera of the FACT telescope is comprised of solid-state Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) instead of photomultiplier tubes for photo detection. It is the first full-scale device of its kind employing this new technology. The telescope is operated at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain) since fall 2011. This paper describes in detail the design, construction and operation of the system, including hardware and software aspects. The nucleon form factors in free space are usually thought to be modified when a nucleon is bound in a nucleus or immersed in a nuclear medium. We investigate effects of the density-dependent axial and weak-vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($\nu_e$) and anti-electro-neutrino $({\bar \nu_e})$ reactions via neutral current (NC) for a nucleon in nuclear medium or $^{12}$C. For the density-dependent form factors, we exploit the quark-meson-coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $\nu_e$ and ${\bar \nu_e}$ induced reactions by NC. About 12% decrease of the total cross section by $\nu_e$ reaction on the nucleon is obtained at normal density, $\rho = \rho_0 \sim 0.15 {fm}^{-3} $, as well as about 18% reduction of total ${\nu}_e$ cross section on $^{12}$C, by the modification of the weak form factors of the bound nucleon. However, similarly to the charged current reaction, effects of the nucleon property change in the ${\bar \nu}_e$ reaction reduce significantly the cross sections about 30% for the nucleon in matter and $^{12}$C cases. Such a large asymmetry in the ${\bar \nu}_e$ cross sections is addressed to originate from the different helicities of ${\bar \nu}_e$ and ${\nu}_e$.

Oxygen vacancies created in anatase TiO2 by UV photons (80 - 130 eV) provide an effective electron-doping mechanism and induce a hitherto unobserved dispersive metallic state. Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) reveals that the quasiparticles are large polarons. These results indicate that anatase can be tuned from an insulator to a polaron gas to a weakly correlated metal as a function of doping and clarify the nature of conductivity in this material.

We report a comprehensive study of the paradigmatic quasi-1D compound (TaSe4)2I performed by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles electronic structure calculations. We find it to be a zero-gap semiconductor in the non-distorted structure, with non-negligible interchain coupling. Theory and experiment support a Peierls-like scenario for the CDW formation below T_CDW = 263 K, where the incommensurability is a direct consequence of the finite interchain coupling. The formation of small polarons, strongly suggested by the ARPES data, explains the puzzling semiconductor-to-semiconductor transition observed in transport at T_CDW., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study the effect of the density-dependent axial and vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($\nu_e$) and anti-neutrino $({\bar \nu}_e)$ reactions for a nucleon in nuclear matter or in $^{12}$C. The nucleon form factors in free space are presumed to be modified for a bound nucleon in a nuclear medium. We adopt the density-dependent form factors calculated by the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $\nu_e$ and ${\bar \nu}_e$ induced reactions with the initial energy $E = $ 8 $\sim$ 80 MeV. We find that the total ${\nu}_e$ cross sections on $^{12}$C as well as a nucleon in nuclear matter are reduced by about 5% at the nuclear saturation density, $\rho_0$. This reduction is caused by the modification of the nucleon structure in matter. Although the density effect for both cases is relatively small, it is comparable with the effect of Coulomb distortion on the outgoing lepton in the $\nu$-reaction. In contrast, the density effect on the ${\bar \nu}_e$ reaction reduces the cross section significantly in both nuclear matter and $^{12}$C cases, and the amount maximally becomes of about 35% around $\rho_0$. Such large asymmetry in the $\nu_e$ and ${\bar \nu}_e$ cross sections, which seems to be nearly independent of the target, is originated from the difference in the helicities of ${\bar \nu}_e$ and ${\nu}_e$. It is expected that the asymmetry influences the r-process and also the neutrino-process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

With the advent of high analysis technology in detecting the Gamow-Teller (GT) excited states beyond one nucleon emission threshold, the quenching of the GT strength to the Ikeda sum rule seems to be recovered by the high-lying GT states. Moreover, in some nuclei, the stronger GT peaks than any other peaks appear explicitly in the high-lying excited states. We address that these high-lying GT excited states stems from the smearing of the Fermi surface by the increase of the chemical potential owing to the deformation within a framework of the deformed quasi-particle random phase approximation (DQRPA). Detailed mechanism leading to the smearing is discussed, and comparisons to the available experimental data are shown to explain the strong peaks on the high-lying GT excited states in a satisfactory manner., Comment: 8 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1205.4561

Comparison of a Penning trap and a flat-crystal spectrometer experiments gives a direct test of $E=mc^2$. The result is $1-\Delta mc^2/E =(-1.4 \pm 4.4) \times 10^{-7}$ for $^{29}{\rm Si}$ and $^{33}{\rm S}$. The dominant uncertainty is on the $\gamma$-ray measurement in neutron capture reactions, and the secondary $\gamma$-ray has the uncertainty 4.0 eV for $^{29}{\rm Si}$. We calculated the Doppler effect of the secondary $\gamma$-ray as $-646.9 \cos \theta$ eV from the relativistic energy momentum relation of the $^{28}{\rm Si}(n,\gamma)^{29}{\rm Si}$ reaction. This corresponds to the full wave of half maximum of 431.3 eV. The error 4.0 eV comes mainly from the Bragg angle measurement between the centroids of the linewidths which means that only the most probable part of the whole data has been considered. It is necessary to confirm the assumption of the isotropy for the object to measure. We discussed a coincidence measurement as one of the methods to overcome the assumption., Comment: 12 pages

We developed the quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) for the neutrino scattering off even-even nuclei via neutral current (NC) and charged cur- rent (CC). The QRPA has been successfully applied for the \beta and \beta\beta decay of relevant nuclei. To describe neutrino scattering, general multipole transitions by weak interactions with a finite momentum transfer are calculated for NC and CC reaction with detailed formalism. Since we consider neutron-proton (np) pairing as well as neutron-neutron (nn) and proton-proton (pp) pairing correlations, the nn + pp QRPA and np QRPA are combined in a framework, which enables to describe both NC and CC reactions in a consistent way. Numerical results for \nu-^{12}C, -^{56}Fe and -^{56}Ni reactions are shown to comply with other theoretical calculations and reproduce well available experimental data.

We investigate medium effects due to density-dependent magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields. If we allow the variation of anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of baryons in dense matter under strong magnetic fields, AMMs of nucleons are enhanced to be larger than those of hyperons. The enhancement naturally affects the chemical potentials of baryons to be large and leads to the increase of a proton fraction. Consequently, it causes the suppression of hyperons, resulting in the stiffness of the equation of state. Under the presumed strong magnetic fields, we evaluate relevant particles' population, the equation of state and the maximum masses of neutron stars by including density-dependent AMMs and compare them with those obtained from AMMs in free space.

We propose that the thermoelectric power distinguishes two competing scenarios for quantum phase transitions in heavy fermions : the spin-density-wave (SDW) theory and breakdown of the Kondo effect. In the Kondo breakdown scenario, the Seebeck coefficient turns out to collapse from the temperature scale $E^{*}$, associated with quantum fluctuations of the Fermi surface reconfiguration. This feature differs radically from the physics of the SDW theory, where no reconstruction of the Fermi surface occurs, and can be considered as the hallmark of the Kondo breakdown theory. We test these ideas, upon experimental results for YbRh$_2$Si$_2$.

We develop the quantum Boltzman equation approach for the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point, involved with two bands for conduction electrons and localized fermions. Particularly, the role of vertex corrections in transport is addressed, crucial for non-Fermi liquid transport of temperature linear dependence. Only one band of spinons may be considered for scattering with gauge fluctuations, and their associated vertex corrections are introduced in the usual way, where divergence of self-energy corrections is cancelled by that of vertex corrections, giving rise to the physically meaningful result in the gauge invariant expression for conductivity. On the other hand, two bands should be taken into account for scattering with hybridization excitations, giving rise to coupled quantum Boltzman equations. We find that vertex corrections associated with hybridization fluctuations turn out to be irrelevant due to heavy mass of spinons in the so called decoupling limit, consistent with the diagrammatic approach showing the non-Fermi liquid transport.

Scaling expressions for the free energy are derived, using the Luttinger-Ward (LW) functional approach in the Eliashberg framework, for two different models of quantum critical point (QCP). First, we consider the spin-density-wave (SDW) model for which the effective theory is the Hertz-Moriya-Millis (HMM) theory, describing the interaction between itinerant electrons and collective spin fluctuations. The dynamic of the latter are described by a dynamical exponent $z$ depending on the nature of the transition. Second, we consider the Kondo breakdown model for QCP's, one possible scenario for heavy-fermion quantum transitions, for which the effective theory is given by a gauge theory in terms of conduction electrons, spinons for localized spins, holons for hybridization fluctuations, and gauge bosons for collective spin excitations. For both models, we construct the thermodynamic potential, in the whole phase diagram, including all kinds of self-energy corrections in a self-consistent way, at the one loop level. We show how Eliashberg framework emerges at this level and use the resulting Eliashberg equations to simplify the LW expression for free energy . it is found that collective boson excitations play a central role. The scaling expression for the singular part of the free energy near the Kondo breakdown QCP is characterized by two length scales : one is the correlation length for hybridization fluctuations, and the other is that for gauge fluctuations, analogous to the penetration depth in superconductors., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures + 1 added in final version as published in J. We study both the electrical and thermal transport near the heavy-fermion quantum critical point (QCP), identified with the breakdown of the Kondo effect as an orbital selective Mott transition. We show that the contribution to the electrical conductivity comes mainly from conduction electrons while the thermal conductivity is given by both conduction electrons and localized fermions (spinons), scattered with dynamical exponent $z = 3$. This scattering mechanism gives rise to a quasi-linear temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal resistivity. The characteristic feature of the Kondo breakdown scenario turns out to be emergence of additional entropy carriers, that is, spinon excitations. As a result, we find that the Wiedemann-Franz ratio should be larger than the standard value, a fact which enables to differentiate the Kondo breakdown scenario from the Hertz-Moriya-Millis framework.

The Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) observed Doppler shifted material of a partial Halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on December 13 2001. The observed ratio of [O V]/O V] is a reliable density diagnostic important for assessing the state of the plasma. Earlier UVCS observations of CMEs found evidence that the ejected plasma is heated long after the eruption. We have investigated the heating rates, which represent a significant fraction of the CME energy budget. The parameterized heating and radiative and adiabatic cooling have been used to evaluate the temperature evolution of the CME material with a time dependent ionization state model. The functional form of a flux rope model for interplanetary magnetic clouds was also used to parameterize the heating. We find that continuous heating is required to match the UVCS observations. To match the O VI-bright knots, a higher heating rate is required such that the heating energy is greater than the kinetic energy. The temperatures for the knots bright in Ly$\alpha$ and C III emission indicate that smaller heating rates are required for those regions. In the context of the flux rope model, about 75% of the magnetic energy must go into heat in order to match the O VI observations. Neutrino (antineutrino) scattering off $^{12}$C is one of various important key reactions for $\nu$-process in the nucleosysnthesis of light nuclei. Most of neutrino-nucleus scattering are considered through indirect processes within the energy range from a few to tens of MeV. Target nuclei are excited by incident neutrino (antineutrino) through various transitions, and subsequently decay into other nuclei with emitting particles. But, direct processes are also feasible, in which incident neutrino (antineutrino) strips directly one nucleon from target nuclei. Consequently, direct processes may affect abundances of $^{11}$C and $^{11}$B additionally to indirect processes. We investigate direct neutrino (antineutrino) quasi-elastic scattering off $^{12}$C around the energy region liberating one nucleon and discuss implications of direct processes in the nucleosynthesis. The direct processes might be comparable to the indirect processes if the final state interaction is taken into account., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We show that the scenario of multi-scale Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (QCP) gives rise to a divergent Gr\"uneisen ratio with an anomalous exponent 0.7. In particular, we fit the experimental data of $YbRh_{2}(Si_{0.95}Ge_{0.05})_{2}$ for specific heat, thermal expansion, and Gr\"uneisen ratio based on our simple analytic expressions. A reasonable agreement between the experiment and theory is found for the temperature range between 0.4 K and 10 K. We discuss how the Gr\"uneisen ratio is a key measurement to discriminate between the Kondo breakdown and spin-density wave theories.

Strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering are investigated on the elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and the neutrino-nucleus scattering for 12C target in the quasi-elastic region on the incident energy of 500 MeV, within the framework of a relativistic single particle model. For the neutrino-nucleus scattering, the effects of final state interaction for the knocked-out nucleon are included by a relativistic optical potential. In the cross sections we found some cancellations of the strange quark contributions between the knocked-out protons and neutrons. Consequently, the asymmetries between the incident neutrino and antineutrino which is the ratio of neutral current to charged current, and the difference between the asymmetries are shown to be able to yield more feasible quantities for the strangeness effects. In order to explicitly display importance of the cancellations, results of the exclusive reaction 16O(\nu, \nu' p) are additionally presented for detecting the strangeness effects., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Based on the extended optical model with the double folding potential, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $\chi^{2}$ analyses are performed of elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{28}$Si, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb systems at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. We find that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is systematically repulsive for all the targets considered, which is consistent with the results deduced from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations taking into account the polarization effects due to breakup. Using the Gaussian-03 for ab initio calculations, we have studied interaction of different acid molecules with a single water molecule. The molecular and supermolecular optimized structures were found with the Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP-hybrid potential) calculations of density-functional theory (DFT) methods as well as the Moeller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory, using the basis set of Aug-cc-pVDZ quality and the CRENBL ECP effective core potential for molecules containing heavy iodine atom. Possible isomers of studied acids and supermolecules, consisting of acid molecules coupled with a single water molecule, are shown. Energies, zero-point energies (ZPEs), thermal enthalpies and free energies, as well as the corresponding binding energies for the theoretical methods were calculated. It was found that optimized structures of supermolecular isomers with lowest energies corresponding to the global minimum on the potential energy surfaces can be different for both theories. The simplest structure acids H2S and H2Se, forming acid-water supermolecules, can give clear evidence of disagreement of the two theoretical methods concerning optimization of lowest energy structures, because the B3LYP-DFT method gives the lowest-energy structure for the first supermolecular isomer, but the MP2 method for the second possible isomer. A dramatic difference between potential energy surfaces for both theories applying to the optimized structure finding of the H2SO3-H2O supermolecular isomers was found, because MP2 supermolecular geometries cannot exist for the corresponding B3LYP-DFT ones, for which the frequency characteristics of the supermolecular isomers were also calculated. In general, the binding energies and ZPE ones for the MP2 method are 10-15% larger than those for the B3LYP-DFT method., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figs, 2 tables, 90 references

Strange quark contributions to neutrino(antineutrino) scattering are investigated on the nucleon level in the quasi-elastic region. The incident energy range between 500 MeV and 1.0 GeV is used for the scattering. All of the physical observable by the scattering are investigated within available experimental and theoretical results for the strangeness form factors of the nucleon. In specific, a newly combined data of parity violating electron scattering and neutrino scattering is exploited. Feasible quantities to be explored for the strangeness contents are discussed for the application to neutrino-nucleus scattering., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, submit to J. Phys. G

We found that the sensitivity of the strange quark contents could be salient on the asymmetry between neutrino and antineutrino scattering cross sections. In specific, $A (\nu ({\bar \nu}), \nu^{'} ({\bar \nu}^{'}) N)$ reaction is shown to be very sensitive test in the searches of the strangeness.

The neutral-current neutrino-nucleus scattering is calculated through the neutrino-induced knocked-out nucleon process in the quasielastic region by using a relativistic single particle model for the bound and continuum states. The incident energy range between 500 MeV and 1.0 GeV is used for the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering on ^{12}C target nucleus. The effects of the final state interaction of the knocked-out nucleon are studied not only on the cross section but also on the asymmetry due to the difference between neutrinos and antineutrinos, within a relativistic optical potential. Simultaneous $\chi^{2}$ analyses previously made for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system is extended to the $^{7}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies based on the extended optical model approach, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and that both the DR and fusion parts of the polarization potential determined from the $\chi^{2}$ analyses satisfy separately the dispersion relation. Further, we find that the real part of the fusion portion of the polarization potential is attractive while that of the DR part is repulsive except at energies far below the Coulomb barrier energy. A comparison is made of the present results with those obtained from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and a previous study based on the conventional optical model with a double folding potential. We also compare the present results for the $^7$Li+$^{208}$Pb system with the analysis previously made for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system., Comment: 7 figures, submitted to PRC

A relativistic single particle model is used to calculate the inclusive $(e,e')$ reaction from $A=$12, 40, 56, 197, and 208 nuclei in the quasielastic region. We have shown that this model provides a very good description of the available experimental cross sections when they are dominated by the quasielastic process. In this paper we use this model to investigate the dependence of $y$-scaling on electron kinematics, particularly the electron scattering angle, for a range of squared four momentum transfer $0.20-0.80$ (GeV/c)$^2$. In this kinematic domain, Coulomb distortion of the electron does not significantly affect scaling, but final state interactions of the knocked out nucleon do affect scaling particularly when the nucleons have lower energies. In general, we find that scaling works for this reaction, but at lower values of the four momentum transfer, the scaling function does have some dependence on the electron scattering angle. We also consider a modification of y-scaling to include small binding energy effects as a function of Z and A and show that there is some improvement in scaling., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Excitation functions for the production of the 181,182m,182g,183,184g,186Re and 183,184Ta radionuclides from proton bombardment on natural tungsten were measured using the stacked-foil activation technique for the proton energies up to 40 MeV. A new data set has been given for the formation of the investigated radionuclides. Results are in good agreement with the earlier reported experimental data and theoretical calculations based on the ALICE-IPPE code. The thick target integral yields were also deduced from the measured excitation functions. The deduced yield values were compared with the directly measured thick target yield (TTY), and found acceptable agreement. The investigated radionuclide 186Re has remarkable applications in the field of nuclear medicine, whereas the data of 183,184gRe and 183Ta have potential applications in thin layer activation analysis and biomedical tracer studies, respectively., Comment: 21papes, 14 figures

Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $\chi^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. A folding potential is used as the bare potential. It is found that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is repulsive, which is consistent with the results from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and the normalization factors needed for the folding potentials. Further, it is found that both DR and fusion parts of the polarization potential satisfy separately the dispersion relation., Comment: 6 figures

Within a relativistic single particle model, we calculate the Coulomb sum rule of inclusive electron scattering from $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb in quasielastic region. Theoretical longitudinal and transverse structure functions are extracted for three momentum transfers from 300 to 500 MeV/c and compared with the experimental data measured at Bates and Saclay. We find that there is no drastic suppression of the longitudinal structure function and that the Coulomb sum rule depends on nucleus in our theoretical model., Comment: 10page, 9figures

The pseudo scalar form factor, which represents the pseudo scalar quark density distribution due to finite quark masses on the nucleon, is shown to manifest itself with the induced pseudo scalar form factor in the $L_0^+$ amplitude for the charged pion electro-production. Both form factors show their own peculiar momentum dependence. Under the approximation on which the Goldberg-Treimann relation holds, a sum of both form factors' contributions accounts for the t-channel contribution in the charged pion electro-production near threshold., Comment: 10 pages

Using a relativistic mean-field single particle knock-out model for (e,e') reactions on nuclei, we investigate approximate treatments of Coulomb distortion effects and the extraction of longitudinal and transverse structure functions. We show that an effective momentum approximation (EMA) when coupled with a focusing factor provides a good description of the transverse contributions to the (e,e') cross sections for electron energies above 300 MeV on 208Pb. This approximation is not as good for the longitudinal contributions even for incident electron eneriges above 1 GeV and if one requires very precise extraction of longitudinal and transverse structure functions in the quasielastic region it is necessary to utilize distortion factors based on a nuclear model and a more accurate inclusion of Coulomb distortion effects., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. In this paper we address the adequacy of various approximate methods of including Coulomb distortion effects in (e,e') reactions by comparing to an exact treatment using Dirac-Coulomb distorted waves. In particular, we examine approximate methods and analyses of (e,e') reactions developed by Traini et al. using a high energy approximation of the distorted waves and phase shifts due to Lenz and Rosenfelder. This approximation has been used in the separation of longitudinal and transverse structure functions in a number of (e,e') experiments including the newly published 208Pb(e,e') data from Saclay. We find that the assumptions used by Traini and others are not valid for typical (e,e') experiments on medium and heavy nuclei, and hence the extracted structure functions based on this formalism are not reliable. We describe an improved approximation which is also based on the high energy approximation of Lenz and Rosenfelder and the analyses of Knoll and compare our results to the Saclay data. At each step of our analyses we compare our approximate results to the exact distorted wave results and can therefore quantify the errors made by our approximations. We find that for light nuclei, we can get an excellent treatment of Coulomb distortion effects on (e,e') reactions just by using a good approximation to the distorted waves, but for medium and heavy nuclei simple additional ad hoc factors need to be included. We describe an explicit procedure for using our approximate analyses to extract so-called longitudinal and transverse structure functions from (e,e') reactions in the quasielastic region., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 16 references

In this paper we apply a well-tested approximation of electron Coulomb distortion effects to the exclusive reaction (e,e'p) in the quasielastic region. We compare the approximate treatment of Coulomb distortion effects to the exact distorted wave Born approximation evaluated by means of partial wave analysis to gauge the quality of our approximate treatment. We show that the approximate M\"oller potential has a plane-wave-like structure and hence permits the separation of the cross section into five terms which depend on bilinear products of transforms of the transition four current elements. These transforms reduce to Fourier transforms when Coulomb distortion is not present, but become modified with the inclusion of Coulomb distortion. We investigate the application of the approximate formalism to a model of 208Pb(e,e'p) using Dirac-Hartree single particle wave functions for the ground state and relativistic optical model wave functions for the continuum proton. We show that it is still possible to extract, albeit with some approximation, the various structure functions from the experimentally measured data even for heavy nuclei., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 19 references

TiO$_2$ anatase doped with Co has been recently reported to exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism. $Ab$ $initio$ study on substitutional Co doping, however, yielded much larger magnetic moment for Co than experiment. Our calculations based on density-functional theory show that the substitutional Co ions incorporated into TiO$_2$ anatase tend to cluster and then the neighboring interstitial tetrahedral sites become energetically favorable for Co to reside, yielding a local environment more like Co$_3$O$_4$ than CoTiO$_3$. The interstitial Co destroys the spin-polarization of the surrounding substitutional Co but enhances the stability of the ferromagnetism significantly. Room-temperature ferromagnetism has been recently discovered in Co-doped TiO$_2$ rutile. Our $ab$ $initio$ density-functional theory investigations show that the substitutional Co ions incorporated into TiO$_2$ rutile tend to cluster and then the neighboring interstitial sites become energetically favorable for Co to reside. This suggests that a Co-doped rutile containing only substitutional Co is not an appropriate reference bulk system in derterming the local environment of Co in polycrystalline (Ti,Co)O$_2$ rutile. We also find that the interstitial Co is in the low spin state and destroys the spin-polarization of the surrounding substitutional Co, hence reduces the average magnetic moment of impurity atoms., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; submitted to PRB on February 17, 2003

Quasielastic electron scattering $(e,e')$ from $^{56}$Fe is calculated at large electron energies (2-4 GeV) and large three momentum transfer (0.5-1.5 GeV/c). We use a relativistic mean-field single particle model for the bound and continuum nucleon wavefunctions based on the $\sigma-\omega$ model and we include the effects of electron Coulomb distortion in the calculation. The calculations are compared to high energy data from SLAC and more recent data from Jefferson Laboratory, particularly for kinematics where the energy transfer is less than 500 to 600 MeV and the quasielastic process is expected to dominate the cross section. The effects of the predicted weakening of the strong scalar and vector potentials of the $\sigma-\omega$ model at high energy are investigated. Possible evidence for `longitudinal suppression' or modifications of nucleon form factors in the medium is considered, but neither is necessary to explain the quasielastic data for four momentum transfers less than 1 (GeV/c)$^2$., Comment: 10 pages, 4figures

A role of the axial vector mesons, such as $K_1$ and $a_1$, on the emitted photon spectrum in hot hadronic matter is studied through the channels $\pi \rho \to a_1 \to \pi \gamma$ and $K \rho \to K_1 \to K \gamma$. They are shown to be dominant channels in this spectrum. This study is carried out with an effective chiral lagrangian which includes vector and axial-vector mesons and explains well their relevant decays simultaneously., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Based on electronic structure calculations, we have found that noble metal diborides, AgB2 and AuB2, are potential candidates for conventional BCS-type high temperature superconductors. B 2p density of states dominates at the Fermi level in comparison with Ag 4d and Au 5d states. Furthermore, the electron-phonon coupling constant \lambda is much larger in AgB2 and AuB2 than in MgB2. Estimated transition temperatures for AgB2 and AuB2 are T_c = 59 K and 72 K, respectively. These are about 2 ~ 3 times higher than the estimated T_c = 27 K in MgB2 and almost comparable to those in cuprate superconductors., Comment: 4 pages including 4 figures

In response to recent experimental studies we investigate Coulomb distortion effects on $(e,e')$ reactions from medium and heavy nuclei for the case of electrons and positrons. We extend our previously reported full DWBA treatment of Coulomb distortions to the case of positrons for the $^{208}Pb(e,e')$ reaction in the quasielastic region for a particular nuclear model. In addition, we use previously reported successful approaches to treating Coulomb corrections in an approximate way to calculate the Coulomb distortion effects for $(e,e')$ reactions for both electrons and positrons for the case of a simple nuclear model for quasielastic knock-out of nucleons. With these results in hand we develop a simple {\em ad-hoc} approximation for use in analyzing experiments, and discuss methods of extracting the ``longitudinal structure function" which enters into evaluation of the Coulomb sum rule. These techniques are generally valid for lepton induced reactions on nuclei with momentum transfers greater than approximately 300 $MeV/c$., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

A SU(2) effective lagrangian is extended to a $SU_{L}(3)\otimes SU_{R}(3)$ by including the vector and axial vector meson. With this effective lagrangian, electromagnetic form factors of charged pion and kaon are calculated. The pseudoscalar meson loops are taken into account. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained for those form factors. Decay widths of $\rho\to \pi\pi$ and $\phi\to K^{+}K^{-}$ are also calculated and shown to agree with experimental data very well., Comment: 19pages, 7figures

The kaon photoproduction is analyzed up to $E_\gamma^{\rm Lab}$=2.0 GeV by using an isobaric model based on effective Lagrangians and by taking a cross symmetry into account. Both {\it pseudovector} and {\it pseudoscalar} couplings for kaon-baryon-baryon (baryon spin=1/2) interactions are considered with form factors. A vector meson($K^*(890)$), an axial vector meson($K_1(1270)$), nucleon resonances($J\le5/2$), and hyperon resonances($J\le3/2$) are treated as participating particles. By determining unknown coupling constants through a systematic fitting of the differential cross section, the total cross section, the single polarization observable, and the radiative kaon capture branching ratio to their experimental data, we find out a simple model which reproduces all the experimental data well., Comment: 48 pages, 7 figures

We report a significant improvement of an approximate method of including electron Coulomb distortion in electron induced reactions at momentum transfers greater than the inverse of the size of the target nucleus. In particular, we have found a new parametrization for the elastic electron scattering phase shifts that works well at all electron energies greater than 300 $MeV$. As an illustration, we apply the improved approximation to the $(e,e'p)$ reaction from medium and heavy nuclei. We use a relativistic ``single particle'' model for $(e,e'p)$ as as applied to $^{208}Pb(e,e'p)$ and to recently measured data at CEBAF on $^{16}O(e,e'p)$ to investigate Coulomb distortion effects while examining the physics of the reaction., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, PRC submitted

The recent TRIUMF experiment for $\mu^- p \to n \nu_{\mu} \gamma$ gave a surprising result that the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant $g_P$ was larger than the value obtained from $\mu^- p \to n \nu_{\mu}$ experiment as much as 44 %. Reexamining contribution of the axial vector current in electromagnetic interaction, we found an additional term to the matrix element which was used to extract the $g_P$ value from the measured photon energy spectrum. This additional term, which plays a key role to restore the reliability of $g_P (- 0.88 m_{\mu}^2) = 6.77 g_A (0)$, is shown to affect the $g_P$ quenching problems in nucleus., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures
