Abstract

How do changing states of relational dynamics affect the interpretation of things said and done by the parties in discourse ? By what conceptual model will the consultant be guided in making adjustment for the effect of relational dynamics on qualitative aspects of interpreting information about the client? This thesis describes a psycholinguistic approach to developing analytical, rather than explanatory theory for the correlation between subjective/power positioning in discourse and functionally specific usage of vocabularies in self-referential text, The aim is to show, how changing states of the self-concept may become operationalised through the formative precess of language behaviour. It involves the terms 'subjectivity' and 'power' conceptualised as complementary social constructs, The focus of linguistic analysis is en avoidance related text of episodic recall, Previous research (Stone et al, 1956) suggests, relative to any other mode of self-presentation, avoidance is least supportive of maintaining functionally effective object relations in the consultant-client discourse. This empirical study represents a qualitative-guantitative approach to content analysis, grounded in the verbal text of autobiographical accounts by consultants from different professions. Results are discussed, while critically reviewing the work of other researchers, inter alia McGuire (et al, 1986) and their methodology for analysing text of this category, Findings from inferential statistics of the present study provide the basis for a conceptual model of functionally differentiated states of the self in discourse, The proposed heuristics lead to a comparative discussion of that differentiation for a two-dimensional scale, active-passive and friendly-hostile, It describes relative levels of cognitive distortion in probabilistic terms, Subjectivity and power are viewed as state-specific, empirically guantifiable concepts, Concluding, this document addresses theoretical and methodological implications for a linguistically orientated approach to intervention.

Abstract

The validity of brain monitoring using electroencephalography (EEG), particularly to guide care in patients with acute or critical illness, requires that experts can reliably identify seizures and other potentially harmful rhythmic and periodic brain activity, collectively referred to as "ictal-interictal-injury continuum" (IIIC). 86. Depression Diagnoses and Fundamental Frequency-Based Acoustic Cues in Maternal Infant-Directed Speech

Abstract

F[subscript 0]-based acoustic measures were extracted from a brief, sentence-final target word spoken during structured play interactions between mothers and their 3- to 14-month-old infants and were analyzed based on demographic variables and DSM-IV Axis-I clinical diagnoses and their common modifiers. F[subscript 0] range (?F[subscript 0]) was negatively correlated with infant age and number of children. ?F[subscript 0] was significantly smaller in clinically depressed mothers and mothers diagnosed with depression in partial remission, relative to nondepressed mothers, mothers diagnosed with depression in full remission, and those diagnosed with depressive disorder not otherwise specified. ?F[subscript 0] was significantly lower in mothers experiencing their first major depressive episode relative to mothers with recurrent depression. Deficits in ?F[subscript 0] were specific to diagnosed clinical depression, and were not well predicted by elevated self-report scores only or by diagnosed anxiety disorders. Mothers with higher ?F[subscript 0] had infants with reportedly larger productive vocabularies, but depression was unrelated to vocabulary development. Implications for cognitive-linguistic development are discussed.

100. Despite Common Core, States Still Lack Common Standards

Abstract

Only 35 percent of U.S. 8th graders were identified as proficient in math by the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). According to the most recent calculations available, the United States stands at the 32nd rank in math among nations in the industrialized world. In reading, the U.S. ranks 17th in the world (see "Are U.S. Students Ready to Compete?" features, Fall 2011). The low performance of U.S. students has been attributed to low expectations set by states under the 2002 federal law, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), which expects all students to reach full proficiency by 2014. In this, the fifth in a series of "Education Next" reports, the authors compare the proficiency standards set by each state to those set by NAEP, which has established its proficiency bar at levels comparable to those of international student assessments. Despite the controversy, 45 states have officially adopted CCSS, pledging themselves to a high, common definition of expected student competencies, to be assessed by common tests starting in 2015. Whether or not that commitment is reflected in any lifting of standards in practice in the meantime is the question investigated in this report.
