Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of caries and dental erosions in young competitive swimmers., Material and Methods: The study was done in 131 subjectively healthy persons. The study group consisted of 62 subjects--25 females and 37 males--who performed competitive swimming at the Szczecin House of Sports for a period 2-16 years. Each subject spent 16-25 hours per week in the swimming pool. The control group consisted of persons who attended randomly selected junior high schools in Szczecin and who performed recreational swimming or did not swim at all. The study and control groups were matched for gender, age, and educational level., Results: Statistical analysis disclosed that dental lesions in the form of erosions were more common in competitive swimmers than in the control group. Dental erosions were located mainly on the labial surfaces of maxillary incisors. The intensity of caries was similar in both groups.

Objective: To review the literature on dental pulp responses to self-etching adhesive systems used in indirect capping., Material and Methods: Many studies in vitro and in vivo focused on biocompatibility of the self-etching adhesive system used in deep defects. Clinical and radiographic findings from animal and human studies are compared and discussed., Results: Self-etching adhesive systems may be useful when applied to dentin. The results in animal studies cannot be extrapolated directly to humans. Many studies in vitro have shown that components of self-etching adhesive systems exhibit cytotoxic effects in contact with cell cultures., Conclusions: The reaction of dental pulp to self-etching bonding agents depends on the depth of defect, type of agent, and method of application.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are serious eating disorders on the mental background that affect a significant number of young people. They lead to many complications including the ones within the oral cavity. The most frequent effects concerning tooth hard tissue are dental erosions. Erosions are characterized by the irreversible process of demineralization of the external layers of tissues of the tooth. This paper reviews literature to assess the oral status and dental complications in patients with eating disorders.
