This tutorial describes the basic principles and performance analysis of optical intensity modulators using electrooptic and electroabsorption effects, for use in analog and digital communication systems. These include lithium niobate modulators, semiconductor electroabsorption modulators, semiconductor Mach-Zehnder modulators, and polymer modulators.
