Abstract

This paper describes a study of B meson decays to the pseudoscalar-vector final state \rho\pi using 31.9\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions B(B^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+) = (8.0^{+2.3+0.7}_{-2.0-0.7}) \times 10^{-6} and B(B^0 -> \rho^{+-} \pi^{-+}) = (20.8^{+6.0+2.8}_{-6.3-3.1}) \times 10^{-6} are obtained. In addition, a 90% confidence level upper limit of B(B^0 \to \rho^0\pi^0) < 5.3 \times 10^{-6}is reported.

Abstract

The production of the \chi_{c2} charmonium state in two-photon collisions has been measured with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. A clear signal for \chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi, J/\psi --> l^+l^- is observed in a 32.6fb^{-1} data sample accumulated at center-of-mass energies near 10.6GeV, and the product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction is determined to be \Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})B(\chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi) B(J/\psi --> l^+l^-)= 13.5 +/- 1.3(stat.) +/- 1.1(syst.)eV., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the semileptonic B decay B 0 →D + l − ν , where l− can be either an electron or a muon. We find Γ( B 0 →D + l − ν )=(13.79±0.76±2.51) ns −1 , and the resulting branching fraction B ( B 0 →D + l − ν )=(2.13±0.12±0.39)% , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also investigate the B 0 →D + l − ν form factor and the implications of the result for |Vcb|. From a fit to the differential decay distribution we obtain the rate normalization |Vcb|FD(1)=(4.11±0.44±0.52)×10−2. Using a theoretical calculation of FD(1), the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element |Vcb|=(4.19±0.45±0.53±0.30)×10−2 is obtained, where the last error comes from the theoretical uncertainty of FD(1). The results are based on a data sample of 10.2fb−1 recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− collider.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb−1 data sample recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν decay to the kinematic limit at which the D ∗+ is at rest with respect to the B 0 , we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb|F(1)=(3.54±0.19±0.18)×10−2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb|=(3.88±0.21±0.20±0.19)×10−2 is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B ( B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν ) is measured to be (4.59±0.23±0.40)×10−2.

Abstract

瀬戸内地域に位置する竜の口山森林理水試験地(E130°58′,N34°42′,以後竜の口山試験地と呼ぶ)の渓流水質の特徴と生成過程を明らかにするために,北谷流域と南谷流域で渓流水の調査を行った.2流域とも渓流水中の溶存成分濃度は我が国の他の渓流に比べて全般的に高かった.流出量の増加に伴いCa2+,Mg2+,Na+,HCO3-およびCl-濃度は大きく低下し,降雨イベント時にNO3-,全窒素および溶存有機炭素(DOC)濃度の上昇ピークが出現した.溶存成分の渓流水の溶存成分濃度が高い原因として,塩基含量の高い岩石の存在している可能性があることや,少雨のために蒸発散による溶存成分の濃縮率が高いことが考えられた.また竜の口山試験地は直接流出率が高く貯留水量が少ないことから,無降雨時には蒸発散によって高濃度の渓流水が形成され,降雨時には多量の直接流で多くの溶存成分濃度が急激に低下するが,NO3-やT-NおよびDOCは土壌表層からの洗脱によって濃度上昇が起きること考えられた.北谷流域ではCa2+,Mg2+,HCO3-,Cl-,SO2-4が高く,南谷流域ではpHとNa+,NO-3,SiO2濃度が高かった.地質や斜面傾斜の違いが2流域の濃度の違いに影響しているのではないかと推定した.

Abstract

We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20

Abstract

We report a determination of the ${B}_{d}^{0}\ensuremath{-}{\overline{B}}_{d}^{0}$ mixing parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays. The measurement is based on a $5.9{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.463\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016(\mathrm{syst}){\mathrm{ps}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This is the first determination of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ from time evolution measurements at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. We also place limits on possible $\mathrm{CPT}$ violations.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the standard model $\mathrm{CP}$ violation parameter $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$ (also known as $\mathrm{sin}2\ensuremath{\beta}$) based on a $10.5{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider. One neutral $B$ meson is reconstructed in the $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{S}$, $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S){K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}{K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{K}_{S}$, $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{L}$, or $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ $\mathrm{CP}$-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying $B$ meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two $B$-meson decay points, we determine $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.58}_{\ensuremath{-}0.34}^{+0.32}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.10}^{+0.09}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Abstract

The responses for a signal in various configurations of photodiodes (PDs) and preamplifiers are analyzed by Laplace transformation. The electronic noise in the configuration is derived using the Fourier transformation. The responses and noise are obtained by an analogical extension of the impedance from a single-PD configuration to the multi-PD configuration; however, the noise is not so simple when connected in series. Using the results, we evaluate the energy resolution of the configurations. A series PD connection realizes a better resolution than a parallel connection in the fast shaping.

Abstract

The results of a beam test of a prototype of the BELLE CsI(Tl) calorimeter are reported. The test used beams of photons with energies spanning the range from 20 MeV to 5.4 GeV, produced at ROKK-1M facility of the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The single-counter energy-equivalent noise was measured to be ∼200 keV. The design goals for the energy resolution, e.g. 4% at 20 MeV and 1.7% at 5.4 GeV, were achieved using the sum of energy deposits in a 5×5 crystal matrices with a single crystal energy threshold of 0.5 MeV; the summed energy deposit measured in the array corresponds to 97±2% of the incident photon energy over the entire energy range. The average position resolution for 470 MeV energy photons was measured to be 8 mm.

Abstract

Results of the test of the BELLE barrel calorimeter prototype using a tagged photon beam are presented. The prototype consisted of 36 CsI(Tl) counters with the same preamplifiers and shapers as in the BELLE calorimeter. The measurements were carried out at the VEPP-4M collider with the tagged photon beam provided by the ROKK-1M facility. The energy resolution for photons was measured in the energy range 40–800 MeV. The achieved energy resolution was 3% for 40 MeV and 1.5% for 800 MeV photons. The results are consistent with the Monte Carlo simulation taking into account effects of the electronics noise.

Abstract

The radiation hardness of prototype CsI(Tl) crystals has been tested for the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter for the BELLE detector of the KEK B factory. Although samples made by one of the producers were found to be soft under irradiation, the problem was quickly improved when this information was fed back. All the tested crystals were found to meet our requirement. The light output was found to be almost uniform along a crystal, even when the front part was damaged by radiation. The damage causes a degradation of the attenuation length due to the formation of color centers; this conclusion was confirmed by a Monte Carlo ray-tracing study.

Abstract

In general, experimentally measured fields such as moire-interferometry fringes contain various errors associated with the measurement and subsequent data analysis. Moreover, the measured displacement field does not necessarily satisfy the equilibrium equation in solid mechanics, especially when the measurement errors are involved. First, a variational principle minimizing the experimental measurement errors is derived to overcome such difficulties. Next, on the basis of this variational principle, a new hybrid moire-interferometry and finite-element method is developed. Concepts of restoration energy and restoration force are also presented in the context of the present hybrid method. The present hybrid method demonstrates automatic detection and elimination of the measurement errors and smooth visualization of stress contours. The present hybrid method automatically achieves the path independence of the J integral, restoring the path-dependence caused by the measurement errors.

Abstract

The photochemical formation of o-xylylene is studied by two-pulse fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. o-Xylylene is produced by photolysis of α,α‘-dichloro-o-xylene, α,α‘-dibromo-o-xylene, α,α‘-bis(trimethylstannyl)-o-xylene, and 2-indanone at 266 nm in room-temperature cyclohexane solution. On excitation at 308 nm, the fluorescence of o-xylylene is observed with a maximum at 460 nm and a lifetime of 9.3 ± 0.5 ns. The absorption of o-xylylene is obtained with a maximum at 370 nm. The formation of o-xylylene from α,α‘-dichloro-o-xylene occurs, by 266-nm two-photon excitation, with an apparent yield of 0.30 ± 0.08 at a fluence of 40 mJ cm-2. Its formation from 2-indanone proceeds, by 266-nm one-photon excitation, with a rate of (1.4 ± 0.1) × 107 s-1 and a yield of 0.90 ± 0.08.

Abstract

We investigated the nuclear counter effect of the silicon PIN photodiode mounted on a CsI(Tl) crystal array as a result of the leakage of electromagnetic shower through the rear end of the crystal. Using 1 and 2 GeV electron beams at KEK, we estimated its effect on the energy measurement by the CsI(Tl) calorimeter of BELLE experiment. The results are found to be in good agreement with that of GEANT simulation and the expected effect for the BELLE calorimeter is negligible.

Abstract

We studied the performance of a prototype electromagnetic calorimeter for the BELLE detector at the KEK proton synchrotron for an energy range of 0.25-3.5 GeV. The prototype consisted of an array of 6 x 5 CsI(Tl) crystals with 30 cm length (16.2 radiation lengths) and about 6 cm x 6 cm cross section. The scintillation light of each CsI(Tl) crystal was read out by two large-area PIN photodiodes and charge-sensitive preamplifiers attached at the rear face of the crystal. We measured the energy and position resolution for electrons and the e/pi separation for two sets of matrix configurations: one corresponded to the center and the other to the edge of the barrel calorimeter. The overall performance measured by the test proves that the prototype calorimeter is satisfactory for the use in the BELLE detector.

Abstract

To clarify the magnetic resonance (MR) features of the pure form of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia, MR images (MRIs) from five patients were retrospectively reviewed and compared with histological findings. The images showed a heterogeneous, iso- to slightly high signal intensity mass on T1-weighted images and a mass with a central heterogeneous, iso- to slightly high signal intensity area completely or incompletely surrounded by peripheral high signal intensity areas on T2-weighted images. Heterogeneous enhancement was observed after gadolinium administration. Histological studies indicated that the central heterogeneous area on T2-weighted images corresponded to thrombi (organized and/or hyalinized) and/or papillary endothelial proliferation, and also that the peripheral high signal intensity area corresponded to vascular blood space and/or papillary endothelial proliferation. The pure form of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia showed relatively characteristic features on MRIs.

73. Characteristics of CO2 flux over a forest on complex topography

Abstract

The CO2 flux over a mixed forest of evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved trees on complex topography was measured by using an eddy covariance method. To evaluate the CO2 flux over such a forest and to ascertain the effect of topography, the eddy covariance measurement was conducted at the top of each of two meteorological towers erected in a basin (1.6 ha). The CO2 flux measured by the eddy covariance method was also evaluated by comparing it with the CO2 flux from leaf photosynthesis and soil respiration as continuously measured by automatic chamber methods on the forest floor and in the foliage. The daily variations in the daytime CO2flux values measured at the two towers were each quite similar. However, for the night-time CO2 flux values, there was about 36% difference between the towers, even though the flux was measured in the same basin. The CO2 flux as measured by eddy covariance and including CO2 storage change (Fn) was 60% lower than that estimated by the chamber methods (Fchm). Abstract

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is an autosomal recessive skin disease caused by mutations in the type VII collagen gene (COL7A1), resulting in detachment of the entire epidermis due to loss or hypoplasticity of the anchoring fibrils that normally secure the basement membrane to the underlying dermis. Trauma-induced blistering is often complicated by chronic erosions and scarring. From that perspective, pregnancy in RDEB might be considered an indication for elective caesarean section in a bid to minimize perineal blistering. To date, only four cases of pregnancy and delivery in patients with RDEB have been reported.We report three more women, each with RDEB-generalized other (RDEB-GO), all of whom had successful vaginal deliveries without major cutaneous or mucosal complications. One woman also had a second child, by vaginal delivery, indicating a lack of vaginal stenosis after the first birth.These cases show that RDEB-GO is not an absolute primary indication for elective caesarean section and that, perhaps surprisingly, genital/perineal blistering and scarring are not inevitable consequences of childbirth. Moreover, breastfeeding is also feasible in women with RDEB-GO.

Abstract

Upconversion fluorescences have been observed in the UV (363 nm) and the blue region (451 and 476 nm) in Tm3+-doped fluoroaluminate glass by pumping with a DCM dye laser. The two-photon absorption process of upconversion fluorescences was confirmed by the quadratic dependence of the emission intensity on incident pumping power. The excitation spectra for upconversion fluorescences show that the mechanism of upconversion is a simple ESA (excited state absorption) process. In addition to ESA, it was found that the energy transfer by cross-relaxation (3H4, 3H6 → 3F4, 3F4) is also involved in the mechanism of the 476 nm blue upconversion fluorescence which differs from that of the UV and the 451 nm blue upconversion fluorescence. The difference was confirmed by measuring both the radiative and the non-radiative decay rate of the 3H4 level.

Abstract

A recombinant baculovirus containing the complete sequence for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA polymerase catalytic subunit, BALF5 gene product, under the control of the baculovirus polyhedrin promoter was constructed. Insect cells infected with the recombinant virus produced a protein of 110 kDa, recognized by anti-BALF5 protein-specific polyclonal antibody. The expressed EBV DNA polymerase catalytic polypeptide was purified from the cytosolic fraction of the recombinant virus-infected insect cells. The purified protein exhibited both DNA polymerase and 3'-to-5' exonuclease activities, which were neutralized by the anti-BALF5 protein-specific antibody. These results indicate that the 3'-to-5' exonuclease activity associated with the EBV DNA polymerase (T. Tsurumi, Virology 182:376-381, 1991) is an inherent feature of the polymerase catalytic polypeptide. The DNA polymerase and the exonuclease activities of the EBV DNA polymerase catalytic subunit were sensitive to ammonium sulfate in contrast to those of the polymerase complex purified from EBV-producing lymphoblastoid cells, which were stimulated by salt. Furthermore, the template-primer preference for the polymerase catalytic subunit was different from that for the polymerase complex. These observations strongly suggest that the presence of EBV DNA polymerase accessory protein, BMRF1 gene product, does influence the enzymatic properties of EBV DNA polymerase catalytic subunit.

The mechanism of red-pumped frequency-upconversion fluorescence observed in the uv and blue ranges of frequencies for a Tm 3+ -doped fluoroaluminate glass was investigated by single-wavelength pumping of a tunable 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethyl-amino-styryl)-4H-pyran dye laser. (100) oriented Platinum (Pt) thin films can be grown on MgO(100)/Fe buffer layers at a substrate temperature above 350 °C by using facing-targets sputtering (FTS) method. A diffusion of Fe atom from the Fe bottom layer to the top of the MgO layer was observed at a substrate temperature above 350 °C. Platinum layer with (100) preferred orientation can be grown above 250 °C by using a process which enhances the diffusion of Fe.

Abstract

To investigate the efficacy of long-term lamivudine (3TC) and adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) combination therapy in 3TC-resistant chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients, we analysed 28 3TC-resistant patients treated with the combination therapy during 47 months (range, 9-75). At 12, 24, 36, and 48 months, the rates of virological response with undetectable HBV DNA (≤ 2.6 log copies/mL) were 56, 80, 86, and 92%, respectively. Among 17 hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients, HBeAg disappeared in 24% at 12 months, 25% at 24 months, 62% at 36 months, and 88% at 48 months. When HBV genotypes were compared, patients with genotype B achieved virological response significantly more rapidly than those with genotype C (P=0.0496). One patient developed virological breakthrough after 54 months, and sequence analysis of HBV obtained from the patient was performed. An rtA200V mutation was present in the majority of HBV clones, in addition to the 3TC-resistant mutations of rtL180M+M204V. The rtN236T ADV-resistant mutation was observed in only 25% clones. In vitro analysis showed that the rtA200V mutation recovered the impaired replication capacity of the clone with the rtL180M+M204V mutations and induced resistance to ADV. Moreover, rtT184S and rtS202C, which are known entecavir-resistant mutations, emerged in some rtL180M+M204V clones without rtA200V or rtN236T. In conclusion, 3TC+ADV combination therapy was effective for most 3TC-resistant patients, especially with genotype B HBV, but the risk of emergence of multiple drug-resistant strains with long-term therapy should be considered. The mutation rtA200V with rtL180M+M204V may be sufficient for failure of 3TC+ADV therapy.

Abstract

The modifying effects of vanillin on the cytotoxicity and 6-thioguanine (6TG)-resistant mutations induced by two different types of chemical mutagens, ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), were examined using cultured Chinese hamster V79 cells. The effects of vanillin on H2O2-induced chromosome aberrations were also examined. Vanillin had a dose-dependent enhancing effect on EMS-induced cytotoxicity and 6TG-resistant mutations, when cells were simultaneously treated with vanillin. The post-treatment with vanillin during the mutation expression time of cells after treatment with EMS also showed an enhancement of the frequency of mutations induced by EMS. However, vanillin suppressed the cytotoxicity induced by H2O2 when cells were post-treated with vanillin after H2O2 treatment. Vanillin showed no change in the absence of activity of H2O2 to induce mutations. Post-treatment with vanillin also suppressed the chromosome aberrations induced by H2O2. The differential effects of vanillin were probably due to the quality of mutagen-induced DNA lesions and vanillin might influence at least two different kinds of cellular repair functions. The mechanisms by which vanillin enhances or suppresses chemical-induced cytotoxicity, mutations and chromosome aberrations are discussed.

Abstract

Soil respiration rates were measured along different parts of a slope in (a) an evergreen forest with common brown forest soil and (b) a deciduous forest with immature soil. The effects of soil temperature, soil moisture and soil properties were estimated individually, and the magnitudes of these effects in the deciduous and evergreen forests were compared. In the evergreen forest with common brown forest soil, soil properties had the greatest effect on soil respiration rates, followed by soil moisture and soil temperature. These results may be explained by the fact that different soil properties matured within different environments. It can be argued that the low soil respiration rates in the low parts of the slope in the evergreen forest resulted from soil properties and not from wet soil conditions. In the deciduous forest, soil respiration rates were more strongly affected by soil moisture and soil temperature than by soil properties. These effects were likely due to the immaturity of the forest soil.

Abstract

At 4 h after injection of carrageenan into the gingiva, the 12-lipoxygenase activity of the gingival homogenate was markedly increased. Activity in the cytosol and microsomal fractions was markedly increased when assessed as the specific activity based on nmol/min/mg of protein, and in the cytosol fraction as the percentage distribution of total activity. The 12-lipoxygenase activity in the homogenate from carrageenan-treated gingiva was not affected by either EDTA or calcium ion, or a combination of the two. 12-lipoxygenase activity in both carrageenan-treated and untreated gingiva was inhibited dose-dependently by AA861, a striking difference from its effect on platelet 12-lipoxygenase. There was a marked increase of 12-lipoxygenase activity in experimentally inflamed gingiva compared to the non-inflamed gingiva.

Abstract

Mutations in the a d isintegrin a nd m etalloprotease with t hrombo s pondin motifs (ADAMTS) family of secreted proteases cause diseases linked to ECM abnormalities. However, the mechanisms by which these enzymes modulate the ECM during development are mostly unexplored. The Caenorhabditis elegans MIG-17/ADAMTS protein is secreted from body wall muscle cells and localizes to the basement membrane (BM) of the developing gonad where it controls directional migration of gonadal leader cells. Here we show that specific amino acid changes in the ECM proteins fibulin-1C (FBL-1C) and type IV collagen (LET-2) result in bypass of the requirement for MIG-17 activity in gonadal leader cell migration in a nidogen (NID-1)-dependent and -independent manner, respectively. The MIG-17, FBL-1C and LET-2 activities are required for proper accumulation of NID-1 at the gonadal BM. However, mutant FBL-1C or LET-2 in the absence of MIG-17 promotes NID-1 localization. Furthermore, overexpression of NID-1 in mig-17 mutants substantially rescues leader cell migration defects. These results suggest that functional interactions among BM molecules are important for MIG-17 control of gonadal leader cell migration. We propose that FBL-1C and LET-2 act downstream of MIG-17-dependent proteolysis to recruit NID-1 and that LET-2 also activates a NID-1-independent pathway, thereby inducing the remodeling of the BM required for directional control of leader cell migration.

87. The estimation of temporal and spatial fluctuations in a forest fire hazard index – the case of a forested public area in Japan

Abstract

Few studies have estimated the risk of forest fire in individual forest stands using forest data, such as the leaf area index. Mapped estimates of the risk of forest fire would benefit forest management, and could be used to decide restrictions on the public use of forest areas. In this study, the litter moisture content ratio was predicted with this model and forest fire hazard was estimated in Tatsunokuchi-yama Green Shower Park, with around 40ha forested area for 2 litter drying periods as a trial. This park is located in central Japan. The model was adapted to the area of around 40ha in this park classified into 9 stands with tree height, tree species and slope direction. The solar radiation on the forest floor and surface soil moisture at 5cm depth was recorded in each stand. Precipitation above the canopy was measured with a rain gauge at a weather station in the base area of the Park. Litter moisture was simulated every 30minutes. Fuel moisture decreased with litter drying speed for each forest stand among simulated days depending on the solar radiation on the each stand floor. Firstly, the simulated result in the defoliate period (24 February–3 May, 2005) is discussed. Litter moisture was less than 0.2g g -1 and fire risk is judged to be highest in 7 out of the 9 forest stands on 2 May. On the other hand, spatial variation of litter moistue was widest at 0.198–0.811g g -1 on 27 February. This means that the litter drying speed and fire risk is different for each forest stand. Thus, it is significant to construct the forest fire warning system for each forest stand and to manage people’s activities in this public forested area to prevent forest fire.

We are interested in the userspsila level of understanding of an innovative Japanese portable phone (KEITAI) unit with multiple functions. This research focuses on userspsila knowledge of cellular phone usage and design and practice of the information transfer method for users who need more information. In this article, we conducted several surveys and their data analysis to determine the necessary knowledge about KEITAIpsilas potential and possible risks for the improvement of KEITAIpsilas usability as well as the operation of successful workshop. We further focus on how KEITAI users gain the knowledge of cellular phones (as information tool), and which functions they have concerns about by comparing the results of nationwide Internet survey and regional survey. Based on these results, we review the knowledge users need, as well as the appropriate area and scale of a trial experiment of the workshop for the effective provision of KEITAI knowledge for ldquonot advanced KEITAI userrdquo. We also found that users concerns are focused on security-related functions such as service suspension in case of theft and electric money, regardless of user type. As a solution to bridge such gap, we held a workshop for providing information on a cellular phone including a quiz game and one-on-one lecture, etc. The repetitive training effectively contributed to the userspsila satisfaction and the improvement of their understandings.

Abstract

We report a study of the processes e+e-→J/ψD(*)D(*). In J/ψD*D* we observe a significant enhancement in the D*D* invariant mass spectrum, which we interpret as a new charmoniumlike state and denote X(4160). The X(4160) parameters are M=(4156-20+25±15)MeV/c2 and Γ=(139-61+111±21)MeV. We also report a new measurement of the X(3940) mass and width: M=(3942-6+7±6) MeV/c2 and Γ=(37-15+26±8)MeV. The analysis is based on a 693fb-1 data sample recorded near the Υ(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report the observation of a new ${D}_{sJ}$ meson produced in ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{D}_{sJ}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{D}^{0}{K}^{+}$. This state has a mass of $M=2708\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{9}_{\ensuremath{-}10}^{+11}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$, a width $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=108\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{23}_{\ensuremath{-}31}^{+36}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^{2}$ and a ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ spin-parity. The statistical significance of this observation is $8.4\ensuremath{\sigma}$. The results are based on an analysis of $449\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events collected at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider.

Abstract

Using 462fb-1 of e+e- annihilation data recorded by the Belle detector, we report the first observation of the decay Ds1(2536)+→D+π-K+. The ratio of branching fractions B(Ds1(2536)+→D+π-K+)B(Ds1(2536) +→D*+K0) is measured to be (3.27±0.18±0.37)%. We also study the angular distributions in the Ds1(2536)+→D*+KS0 decay and measure the ratio of D- and S-wave amplitudes. Abstract

The process e+e-→K+K-J/ψ is observed for the first time via initial-state radiation. The cross section of e+e-→K+K-J/ψ for center-of-mass energies between threshold and 6.0 GeV is measured using 673fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector on and off the Υ(4S) resonance. No significant signal for Y(4260)→K+K-J/ψ is observed, and we determine B(Y(4260)→K+K-J/ψ)Γ(Y(4260)→e+e-)

We report measurements of the exclusive cross section for e+e-→DD, where D=D0 or D+, in the center-of-mass energy range from the DD threshold to 5 GeV with initial-state radiation. Abstract

The weak nucleon axial-vector ({ital F}{sub {ital A}}) and vector ({ital F}{sub {ital V}}) form factors are determined from the momentum-transfer-squared ({ital Q}{sup 2}) distributions using 2538 {mu}{sup {minus}} {ital p} and 1384 {mu}{sup {minus}}{Delta}{sup ++} events. The data were obtained from 1 800 000 pictures taken in the BNL 7-foot deuterium-filled bubble chamber exposed to a wide-band neutrino beam with a mean energy {ital E}{sub {nu}}=1.6 GeV. In the framework of the conventional {ital V}{minus}{ital A} theory with standard assumptions, the value obtained from the {mu}{sup {minus}}{ital p} events for the axial-vector mass {ital M}{sub {ital A}} in the pure dipole parameterization is 1.070{sub {minus}0.045}{sup +0.040} GeV and from the {mu}{sup {minus}}{Delta}{sup ++} events is 1.28{sub {minus}0.10}{sup +0.08} GeV. These results are in good agreement with an earlier measurement from this experiment and other recent results. The reaction mechanisms for both processes are compared and found to be very similar. A two-parameter fit for the quasielastic reaction, using dipole forms for {ital F}{sub {ital V}} and {ital F}{sub {ital A}}, yields {ital M}{sub {ital A}}=0.97{sub {minus}0.11}{sup +0.14} GeV and {ital M}{sub {ital V}}=0.89{sub {minus}0.07}{sup +0.04} GeV, which is in good agreement with the conserved-vector-current value of {ital M}{sub {italmore » V}}=0.84 GeV. Possible deviations from the standard assumptions are also discussed.« less
