51. Acute lead intoxication in a pregnant mare

Abstract: Lead (Pb) intoxication in horses is usually a chronic phenomenon with clinical signs associated with central nervous dysfunction. This report gives details of a case of acute Pb intoxication in a 9-year-old American Saddlebred mare with severe, progressive and ultimately fatal neurological deterioration. During the 4 days of hospitalisation, clinical signs progressed from intermittent headshaking and depression to severe, continuous, uncontrollable manic behaviour. At autopsy, three grey-coloured, hard metal particles were present in the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently found to contain 2614 ppm Pb. Lead concentrations in the brain, liver, stomach and kidney were 29, 4, 6 and 2 ppm wet weight, respectively.

Abstract: Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) A straw proportional counter is the basic element of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). Its detailed properties as well as the main properties of a few TRT operating gas mixtures are described. Abstract: Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) The ATLAS TRT barrel is a tracking drift chamber using 52,544 individual tubular drift tubes. It is one part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, which consists of three sub-systems: the pixel detector spanning the radius range 4 to 20 cm, the semiconductor tracker (SCT) from 30 to 52 cm, and the transition radiation tracker (TRT) from 56 to 108 cm. The TRT barrel covers the central pseudo-rapidity region |η| 1, and the TRT while endcaps cover the forward and backward eta regions. These TRT systems provide a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the recently-completed construction of the TRT Barrel detector, including the quality control procedures used in the fabrication of the detector.

Abstract: The ATLAS TRT end-cap is a tracking drift chamber using 245,760 individual tubular drift tubes. It is a part of the TRT tracker which consist of the barrel and two end-caps. The TRT end-caps cover the forward and backward pseudo-rapidity region 1.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.0, while the TRT barrel central eta region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.0. The TRT system provides a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes ( or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. Along with other two sub-systems, namely the Pixel detector and Semi Conductor Tracker (SCT), the TRT constitutes the ATLAS Inner Detector. This paper describes the recently completed and installed TRT end-cap detectors, their design, assembly, integration and the acceptance tests applied during the construction.

55. Derivation of Soil Surface Roughness Dynamics from Multi-temporal and Multi-parametric Air-borne PolSAR-data

Abstract: The dynamics of soil surface roughness is important to a number of land surface processes. The potential of multi-temporal and multi-parametric PolSAR-data for soil surface roughness estimation is investigated to determine its temporal development. The study is based on weekly quadpol L-Band E-SAR backscatter data, which was collected over the agri-phenological cycle in the course of the AgriSAR 2006 campaign. For ground truthing, the soil surface roughness was measured using photogrammetric imaging techniques. Two ground truth roughness inidces (rms-height s, tortuosity index TB) and three polarimetric roughness estimators (anisotropy A, circular polarization coherence gammaRRLL and the real part of the circular polarization coherence Re[RRLL]) were compared. While most of the comparison outlined weak correlations, best and sufficient results were obtained between s and Re[RRLL]. Multi-temporal roughness maps were derived from this relationship, which are further affected by the presence and development of particular plants.

Abstract: Summary This is a retrospective report on clinical features, laryngoscopic examinations, and follow-up markers of laryngeal manifestation described as bamboo nodes in three female patients with transverse cystic lesions of the vocal folds, treated with logopedic therapy. This study examines logopedic and phoniatric aspects in patients with submucosal "bamboo joint-like nodes" of both vocal folds, and reveals an improvement of different voice quality features after conservative traditional voice therapy. There still exists no standard treatment regimen in patients with rheumatoid disease of the larynx; a lack of consensus is most evident in the role of voice therapy. We would like to emphasize the favorable impact of logopedic therapy in benign laryngeal disorders with underlying autoimmune diseases.

Abstract: The transition radiation tracker (TRT) is one of three particle tracking detectors now under construction for the ATLAS experiment, whose goal is to exploit the highly exciting new physics potential at CERN's next accelerator, the so called Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The TRT consists of 370000 straw proportional tubes of 4 mm diameter with a 30 micron thick anode wire, which will be operated with a Xe/CO2 /O2 gas mixture at a high voltage of approximately 1.5 kV. While the construction of the TRT is now well under way, a number of interesting and challenging questions need to be solved with regard to wire aging phenomena, which are induced by pollution originating from very small amounts of silicon-based vacuum materials in some components of the gas system. Finally a guideline to avoid aging in wire chamber detectors in high luminosity experiments is given

Abstract: The H1 experiment at the electron-proton collider HERA has built a new fast track trigger to increase the selectivity for exclusive final states, especially those with heavy quarks, and to cope with the higher background rates after the HERA luminosity upgrade. Hits measured in the central jet chamber of H1 are combined to track segments by performing 5 middot 1012 mask comparisons per second using content addressable memories (CAMs). These segments are collected and transmitted via 5 Gbit/s LVDS links to custom made multipurpose processing boards, where they get linked and reconstructed to three dimensional tracks within 20 mus. On the third level resonances are identified in 100 mus by a farm of PowerPC boards. Since 2005 the FTT level one has replaced the existing drift chamber trigger and is the major track trigger of the H1 experiment. In order to further increase the selectivity the second level has started to operate. First analyses of the data show that also the second level fulfills the design specifications

Abstract: Anomalous quartic couplings between the electroweak gauge bosons may contribute to the nu(nu) over bar gammagamma and q (q) over bar gammagamma final states produced in e(+)e(-) collisions. This analysis uses the LEP2 OPAL data sample at center-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. Event selections identify nu(nu) over bar gammagamma and q (q) over bar gammagamma events in which the two photons are reconstructed within the detector acceptance. The cross section for the process e(+)e(-)-->q (q) over bar gammagamma is measured. Averaging over all energies, the ratio of the observed e(+)e(-)-->q (q) over bar gammagamma cross section to the standard model expectation is R(data/SM)=0.92+/-0.07+/-0.04, where the errors represent the statistical and systematic uncertainties respectively. The nu(nu) over bar gammagamma and q (q) over bar gammagamma data are used to constrain possible anomalous W(+)W(-)gammagamma and ZZgammagamma couplings. Combining with previous OPAL results from the W(+)W(-)gamma final state, the 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameters a(0)(Z), a(c)(Z), a(0)(W) and a(c)(W) are found to be -0.007 GeV-2

Abstract: Flavour inclusive, udsc and b fragmentation functions in unbiased jets, and flavour inclusive, udsc, b and gluon fragmentation functions in biased jets are measured in e+e- annihilations from data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 91.2, and 183-209 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The unbiased jets are defined by hemispheres of inclusive hadronic events, while the biased jet measurements are based on three-jet events selected with jet algorithms. Several methods are employed to extract the fragmentation functions over a wide range of scales. Possible biases are studied in the results are obtained. The fragmentation functions are compared to results from lower energy e+e- experiments and with earlier LEP measurements and are found to be consistent. Scaling violations are observed and are found to be stronger for the fragmentation functions of gluon jets than for those of quarks. The measured fragmentation functions are compared to three recent theoretical next-to-leading order calculations and to the predictions of three Monte Carlo event generators. While the Monte Carlo models are in good agreement with the data, the theoretical predictions fail to describe the full set of results, in particular the b and gluon jet measurements. Abstract: We present the first exptl. results based on the jet boost algorithm, a technique to select unbiased samples of gluon jets in e+e- annihilations, i.e. gluon jets free of biases introduced by event selection or jet finding criteria. Our results are derived from hadronic Z0 decays obsd. with the OPAL detector at the LEP e+e- collider at CERN. First, we test the boost algorithm through studies with HERWIG Monte Carlo events and find that it provides accurate measurements of the charged particle multiplicity distributions of unbiased gluon jets for jet energies larger than about 5 GeV, and of the jet particle energy spectra (fragmentation functions) for jet energies larger than about 14 GeV. Second, we apply the boost algorithm to our data to derive unbiased measurements of the gluon jet multiplicity distribution for energies between about 5 and 18 GeV, and of the gluon jet fragmentation function at 14 and 18 GeV. In conjunction with our earlier results at 40 GeV, we then test QCD calcns. for the energy evolution of the distributions, specifically the mean and first two nontrivial normalized factorial moments of the multiplicity distribution, and the fragmentation function. The theor. results are in global agreement with the data, although the factorial moments are not well described for jet energies below about 14 GeV. [on SciFinder (R)]

Abstract: Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18} MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. Abstract: The transition radiation tracker (TRT) is part of the inner detector of the ATLAS experiment. It contains 52000 150 cm long straws in the barrel, and 320000 radial straws of 39 to 55 cm height in the two end-cap parts. After 10 years of operation the most exposed straws will accumulate a radiation dose of about 10 Mrad, and up to a neutron fluence of 2 /spl times/ 10/sup 14/ n/cm/sup 2/. These doses result in unprecedented ionization currents and integrated charge (/spl sim/10 C/cm of wire) for a large-scale gaseous detector. The original operating gas was Xe-CF/sub 4/-CO/sub 2/ 70-20-10, a reasonable compromise between conflicting requirements. The use of CF/sub 4/ permits, in addition to obtaining a fast drift time, to achieve lifetimes of a few tenths of one C/cm for the straws. In the present baseline, reviewed in 2002, the TRT will operate with a Xe-CO/sub 2/ mixture with a small percentage of oxygen that adds a significant safety margin to a simpler binary mixture. This mixture is however less robust in terms of aging, particularly it is very sensitive to silicon pollution, and special measures will be required to reach the necessary level of purity for the gas systems components. It has been found that a small addition of CF/sub 4/ to the gas in the high luminosity LHC environment is efficient to clean up aged wires. Periodic cleaning runs of the TRT tracker are foreseen, if needed.

Abstract: Approximately 438 pb-1 of e+e- data from the OPAL detector, taken with the LEP collider running at centre-of-mass energies of 192-209 Gev, are analyzed to search for evidence of chargino pair production, e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1, or neutralino associated production, e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1. Limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross-section for the process e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1 and its branching ratios to topologies containing jets and missing energy, of jest with a lepton and missing energy, and on the product of the cross-section for e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1 and its branching ratio to jets. R-parity conservation is assumed throughout this paper. When these results are interpreted in the context of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, limits are also set on the masses of the tilde chi^+-_1, tilde chi^0_1 and tilde chi^0_2, and regions of the parameter space of the model are ruled out. Nearly model-independent limits are also set at the 95% confidence level on sigma(e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1) with the assumption that each chargino decays via a W boson, and on sigma(e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1) with the tilde chi^0_2 assumed to decay via a Z^0. Approximately 438 pb-1 of e+e- data from the OPAL detector, taken with the LEP collider running at centre-of-mass energies of 192-209 Gev, are analyzed to search for evidence of chargino pair production, e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1, or neutralino associated production, e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1. Limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross-section for the process e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1 and its branching ratios to topologies containing jets and missing energy, of jest with a lepton and missing energy, and on the product of the cross-section for e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1 and its branching ratio to jets. R-parity conservation is assumed throughout this paper. Abstract: This report summarizes the final results from the OPAL collaboration on searches for neutral Higgs bosons predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). CP-conserving and for the first time at LEP CP-violating scenarios are studied. New scenarios are also included, which aim to set the stage for Higgs searches at future colliders. The results are based on the data collected with the OPAL detector at e+e- centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. The data are consistent with the prediction of the Standard Model with no Higgs boson produced. Model-independent limits are derived for the cross-section of a number of events topologies motivated by prediction of the MSSM. Limits on Higgs boson masses and other MSSM parameters are obtained for a number of representative MSSM benchmark scenarios. For example, in the CP-conserving scenario mh-max where the MSSM parameters are adjusted to predict the largest range of values for mh at each tan beta, and for a top quark mass of 174.3 GeV, the domain 0.784.5 GeV and ma>85.0 GeV are obtained. For the CP-violating benchmark scenario CPX which, by construction, enhances the CP-violating effects in the Higgs sector, the domain tan beta84.5 GeV and ma>85.0 GeV are obtained. Abstract: Elements of the spin density matrix for W bosons in e+e- -> W+W- -> qqln events are measured from data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. This information is used calculate polarised differential cross-sections and to search for CP-violating effects. Results are presented for W bosons produced in e+e- collisions with centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV. The average fraction of W bosons that are longitudinally polarised is found to be (23.9 +- 2.1 +- 1.1)% compared to a Standard Model prediction of (23.9 +- 0.1)%. Abstract: Evidence suggests that statin therapy reduces the risk of stroke in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), but its benefit for patients with cerebrovascular disease and no history of CHD remains uncertain. The Stroke Prevention by Aggressive Reduction in Cholesterol Levels (SPARCL) Study is a prospective, multi-centre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial designed to evaluate the effects of atorvastatin 80 mg/day in patients who previously experienced a stroke or transient ischaemic attack, but who have no known CHD. A total of 4,732 patients have been enrolled, and the data collection phase of the study is expected to be completed by October 2004. SPARCL is the first study primarily designed to prospectively evaluate the effect of statin treatment in secondary stroke prevention.

Abstract: In future mobile broadband communication systems, optical fiber will be an attractive means of connecting the mobile switching centre (MSG) with the base stations. In the uplink configuration a downconversion of the microwave signal by mixing is required, which might be attractive to be done optically. We demonstrate experimentally the downconverter function of a mode-locked laser (MLL) with an optical intensity modulator and a photodetector (PD) in the uplink configuration.

75. Optimal control for fast boiler start-up based on a nonlinear model and considering the thermal stress on thick-walled components

Abstract: The basis for control optimization is a nonlinear model for a high-pressure bypass and a drum-type boiler consisting of furnace, economizer, evaporator, superheaters, attemperator, and thick-walled components such as boiler drum and superheater header. After the mathematical formulation of the boiler start-up optimization problem and the cost function, including the related hard constraints (e.g. control bounds and thermal stress limits), the optimal reference and input control is calculated using successive quadratic programming techniques. Results of the optimization process are optimal reference values for the boiler firing rate, steam pressure and steam temperature, and the positioning of the control valves for attemperator and high-pressure bypass during the start-up phase. The control structure applied minimizes both the fuel consumption and start-up time of the boiler and is similar to a model-following control application.

Abstract: Four-fermion final states qqbar e+e- and qqbar mu+mu- from neutral-current interactions in e+e- collisions are studied in the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 183 GeV to 209 GeV. The data analysed correspond to a total integrated luminosity of about 650 pb-1 recorded from 1997 to 2000. Corresponding to the acceptance of the OPAL detector, a signal definition is applied requiring both leptons to have a scattering angle satisfying cos0 qqbar e+e- and e+e- qqbar mu+mu- are consistent with the expectations from the Standard Model., 20 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract: For environmental as well as for economic reasons, large compressors with a power rating of 10 MW and more are increasingly fed by electric variable speed drives. The connection of such drives to the public medium or high voltage grid requires a thorough consideration of the entire system mainly in respect to voltage stability and harmonics to avoid any disturbances of adjacent loads. The paper summarizes the basic operational behaviour of such compressor drives with special consideration of system perturbations. Using examples from recently commissioned plants, possible mitigation measures as well as general experiences are presented. To ensure that everytime certain limits for system disturbances will be met, filters have to be coordinated with actual and future system conditions taking into account possible outage as well as loading conditions of the feeding grid. The consideration of transient disturbances such as starting or stopping the drive are important especially for the design of the auxiliaries. Examples from simulations show typical problems which have to be taken into account.

Abstract: Experiments on the optical generation and transmission of millimeter-wave radio signals are reported. The millimeter-wave signals are generated by heterodyning the optical spectral lines of a mode-locked laser (MLL) or of two or more semiconductor lasers at an optic/millimeter-wave converter (OMC). 70-, 140-, and 155-Mb/s data transmission experiments have been carried out successfully in optical single-channel and multichannel systems at radio frequencies of 12 GHz and 58-70 GHz. Bit-error-rate measurements yielded error-free transmission and no error floor was observed. A monolithically integrated tunable optical-signal source was developed and used for generating the millimeter-wave signals. This technology promises a high cost-saving potential for applications in radio-over-fiber systems.

The absolute frequency accuracy was measured to be better than ± 2.5 GHz between 1525 nm and 1565 nm.

Abstract: Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) The ATLAS inner detector consists of three sub-systems: the pixel detector spanning the radius range 4cm-20cm, the semiconductor tracker at radii from 30 to 52 cm, and the transition radiation tracker (TRT), tracking from 56 to 107 cm. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. Abstract: The 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra of dinaphtho[1,2-b:1′2′-d]thiophene (1), a sulfur-containing polynuclear heteroaromatic, have been totally assigned using a combination of two-dimensional NMR techniques. Techniques applied were standard proton-proton COSY, proton zero-quantum coherence (ZQCOSY, optimized to 7 Hz and to 1.75 Hz), proton double quantum coherence (DQCOSY, optimized to 7 Hz), broad-band decoupled (both dimensions) proton-carbon chemical shift correlation, long-range proton-carbon chemical shift correlation, and proton-carbon heteronuclear relayed coherence transfer. A comparison of these methods on 1 showed the most useful information concerning connectivities to be obtained from the zero-quantum coherence and long-range heteronuclear correlation experiments. A detailed critique of each type of experiment is given in the context of applications to polynuclear aromatics.

Abstract: Long range heteronuclear chemical shift correlation has become an extremely useful technique for complex spectral assignment and structure elucidation. The sensitivity is higher than that afforded by 13C-13C double quantum INADEQUATE experiment. The long range heteronuclear correlation provides the means of establishing connectivities across heteroatoms. Early attempts to use long range heteronuclear chemical shift correlation by simply optimizing the delays for long range couplings met with varied success. Long range coupling responses to protonated carbon resonances can be modulated by the one bond coupling of the protonated carbon. These modulations can lead to precipitous valleys in the response curve and a corresponding loss of connectivity information. A newly reported pulse sequence employing a BIRD pulse midway through the Δ2 refocusing delay “decouples” one bond modulation effects substantially increasing the likelihood of observing the desired connectivities. The application of this technique is reported for phenanthro[1,2-b]thiophene. Unequivocal assignment of the title compound is reported using heteronuclear chemical shift correlation and long range correlation with modulation decoupling. The assignment took a total of < 15 hours of spectrometer time.

Abstract: Crown gall tumors are induced in plants by infection with the soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Because the tumor induction involves transfer of a portion of the tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmid DNA from the bacterium to the plant cells, this system is of interest for the study of genetic exchange as well as tumor induction. The boundaries of the transferred DNA (T-DNA) have been cloned from transformed plant cells of tobacco. Detailed mapping with restriction enzymes and nucleotide sequence analysis of two independent clones were used to study the molecular structure of the ends of the T-DNA. One clone contains the two ends of the T-DNA joined together; the other contains one end of the T-DNA joined to repetitive plant DNA sequences. These studies provide direct evidence that the T-DNA can be integrated into the plant genome. In addition, the data suggest that in the plant, T-DNA can be tandemly repeated. Sequence analysis of the junction of crown gall clone 1 reveals several direct repeats as well as an inverted repeat; these structures may be involved in the transfer of the DNA from Agrobacterium to plant cells.

An analysis of the several methods employed is presented with particular emphasis on the intent of the choices which were made and the operating characteristics of the resulting procedures. One of the novel features is the three-cell selection method which insures that the product delivered has the kind of distribution that is wanted even while the process is in trouble distribution-wise.

Abstract: Measurement of total respiratory resistance by the method of forced oscillations is practical in children too young to cooperate in plethysmography or in placing an esophageal balloon. In normal children, results obtained by forced oscillations are similar to those obtained by more cumbersome techniques. This technique, done quickly and easily with a portable apparatus, is especially suitable for serial assessments of acute obstructive lung disease and for use outside the pulmonary function laboratory.

Abstract: For the purpose of stabilizing short-wave reception, experiments were made using quartz control in receivers. It was found that the use of a crystal which produces audible beats with the frequency of the transmitter quartz is practically impossible. In fact, the quartz-controlled oscillating detector caused too great a decrease in the tone volume, while in the case where a separate quartz-controlled heterodyne was used, the effect of temperature on the frequency of the crystals caused disturbances. In order to solve this problem, a method is described in which the superposition of the frequencies of the transmitter quartz and the receiver quartz produces an oscillation of high frequency. This intermediate frequency corresponds to a long wave and is made audible in a normal oscillating detector.

Abstract: A description is given of a series of experiments carried out between two ground stations, and between an airplane and a ground station, to determine whether it is possible to obtain with relatively low power reliable short-wave communication over distances of 500 km, or more. Continuous-wave transmitters supplying a constant power of two watts were employed throughout the experiments. Results at fixed distances are recorded and discussed, particularly with regard to fading in summer and winter. An airplane installation, operating into a fixed dipole antenna is described, and the results of a large number of observations at ground receiving stations, of the signals received from the airplane in flight are presented.

Abstract: This paper is a report on the experimental investigation of the, raidiation of a short-wave directive antenna at Nauen. Measurements were made on the ground and also in the air, using an airplane. The results, plotted in the form of radiation characteristic curves, were compared with calculated radiation characteristics. In the case of the horizontal radiation characteristic the agreement between measurement and calculation is comparatively good. For the vertical radiation characteristic curves calculations were made for the two limiting cases: a. Nonreflecting earth surface. b. Perfectly reflecting earth surface. The measured vertical characteristic agrees rather well with case b, from which it follows that the surface of the earth, under the conditions prevailing at Nauen, shows a very high reflecting power. This is also confirmed by the fact that the field strength increases very rapidly from 0 at the surface of the earth as the height increases. It is also found that the radiated energy is highly concentrated in the desired direction in the horizontal as well as in the vertical plane.

Abstract: Non-commutative QED would lead to deviations from the Standard Model depending on a new energy scale ΛNC and a unique direction in space defined by two angles η and ξ. In this analysis, η is defined as the angle between the unique direction and the rotation axis of the earth. The predictions of a tree level calculation for the process e+e−→γγ are evaluated for the specific orientation of the OPAL detector and compared to the measurements. Distributions of the polar and azimuthal photon angles are used to extract limits on the energy scale ΛNC depending on the model parameter η. It is shown that the time dependence of the total cross-section could be used to determine the model parameter ξ if there were a detectable signal. This is the first experimental study of non-commutative QED at an e+e− collider.
