During their asymptotic giant branch, evolution low-mass stars lose a significant fraction of their mass through an intense wind, enriching the interstellar medium with products of nucleosynthesis. We observed the nearby oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch star IK Tau using the high-resolution HIFI spectrometer onboard Herschel. We report on the first detection of H_2^{16}O and the rarer isotopologues H_2^{17}O and H_2^{18}O in both the ortho and para states. We deduce a total water content (relative to molecular hydrogen) of 6.6x10^{-5}, and an ortho-to-para ratio of 3:1. These results are consistent with the formation of H_2O in thermodynamical chemical equilibrium at photospheric temperatures, and does not require pulsationally induced non-equilibrium chemistry, vaporization of icy bodies or grain surface reactions. High-excitation lines of 12CO, 13CO, 28SiO, 29SiO, 30SiO, HCN, and SO have also been detected. CONTEXT: Water vapour maser emission from evolved oxygen-rich stars remains poorly understood. Additional observations, including polarisation studies and simultaneous observation of different maser transitions may ultimately lead to greater insight. AIMS: We have aimed to elucidate the nature and structure of the VY CMa water vapour masers in part by observationally testing a theoretical prediction of the relative strengths of the 620.701 GHz and the 22.235 GHz maser components of ortho water vapour. METHODS: In its high-resolution mode (HRS) the Herschel Heterodyne Instrument for the Infrared (HIFI) offers a frequency resolution of 0.125 MHz, corresponding to a line-of-sight velocity of 0.06 km/s, which we employed to obtain the strength and linear polarisation of maser spikes in the spectrum of VY CMa at 620.701 GHz. Simultaneous ground based observations of the 22.235 GHz maser with the Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur Radioastronomie 100-meter telescope at Effelsberg, provided a ratio of 620.701 GHz to 22.235 GHz emission. RESULTS:We report the first astronomical detection to date of water vapour maser emission at 620.701 GHz. In VY CMa both the 620.701 and the 22.235 GHz polarisation are weak. At 620.701 GHz the maser peaks are superposed on what appears to be a broad emission component, jointly ejected asymmetrically from the star. We observed the 620.701 GHz emission at two epochs 21 days apart, both to measure the potential direction of linearly polarised maser components and to obtain a measure of the longevity of these components. Although we do not detect significant polarisation levels in the core of the line, they rise up to approximately 6% in its wings.

During their evolution, Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars experience a high mass-loss which leads to the formation of a Circumstellar Envelope (CSE) of dust and gas. The mass-loss process is the most important phenomenon during this evolutionary stage. In order to understand it, it is important to study the physical parameters of the CSE. The emission of the CSE in the (sub)millimetre range is dominated by the dust continuum. This means that (sub)millimetre observations are a key tool in tracing the dust and improving our knowledge of the mass-loss process. In this paper we analyse new sub-millimetre observations of 9 evolved stars in order to constrain the CSE physical parameters. The data were taken by the new APEX bolometer LABoCa. The fluxes at 870 um are derived and the extended emission is investigated. We compute the spectral energy distribution (SEDs) using a 1D radiative transfer code, DUSTY which we compared to literature data. Grain properties are calculated using both spherical grains distribution and a Continuous Distribution of Ellipsoids (CDE) and a comparison between the two is drawn. Synthetic surface brightness maps have been derived from the modelling and were compared to the LABoCa brightness maps. We detected the presence of extended emission around four stars. Physical parameters of the circumstellar envelope are derived from SED modelling, such as the dust chemical composition, the dust condensation temperature and the total mass of the envelope. Observations of the (N_J=1_1-1_0) ground state transition of O_2 with the Odin satellite resulted in a about 5 sigma detection toward the dense core rho Oph A. At the frequency of the line, 119 GHz, the Odin telescope has a beam width of 10', larger than the size of the dense core, so that the precise nature of the emitting source and its exact location and extent are unknown. The current investigation is intended to remedy this. Telluric absorption makes ground based O_2 observations essentially impossible and observations had to be done from space. mm-wave telescopes on space platforms were necessarily small, which resulted in large, several arcminutes wide, beam patterns. Although the Earth's atmosphere is entirely opaque to low-lying O_2 transitions, it allows ground based observations of the much rarer O18O in favourable conditions and at much higher angular resolution with larger telescopes. In addition, rho Oph A exhibits both multiple radial velocity systems and considerable velocity gradients. Extensive mapping of the region in the proxy C18O (J=3-2) line can be expected to help identify the O_2 source on the basis of its line shape and Doppler velocity. Line opacities were determined from observations of optically thin 13C18O (J=3-2) at selected positions. During several observing periods, two C18O intensity maxima in rho Oph A were searched for in the 16O18O (2_1-0_1) line at 234 GHz with the 12m APEX telescope. Our observations resulted in an upper limit on the integrated O18O intensity of < 0.01 K km/s (3 sigma) into the 26.5" beam. We conclude that the source of observed O_2 emission is most likely confined to the central regions of the rho Oph A cloud. Aims: Spectrally resolved circumstellar H2O(1_10 - 1_01) lines have been obtained towards three M-type AGB stars using the Odin satellite. This provides additional strong constrains on the properties of circumstellar H2O and the circumstellar envelope. Methods: ISO and Odin satellite H2O line data are used as constraints for radiative transfer models. Special consideration is taken to the spectrally resolved Odin line profiles, and the effect of excitation to the first excited vibrational states of the stretching modes (nu1=1 and nu3=1) on the derived abundances is estimated. A non-local, radiative transfer code based on the ALI formalism is used. Results: The H2O abundance estimates are in agreement with previous estimates. The inclusion of the Odin data sets stronger constraints on the size of the H2O envelope. The H2O(1_10 - 1_01) line profiles require a significant reduction in expansion velocity compared to the terminal gas expansion velocity determined in models of CO radio line emission, indicating that the H2O emission lines probe a region where the wind is still being accelerated. Including the nu3=1 state significantly lowers the estimated abundances for the low-mass-loss-rate objects. This shows the importance of detailed modelling, in particular the details of the infrared spectrum in the range 3 to 6 micron, to estimate accurate circumstellar H2O abundances. Conclusions: Spectrally resolved circumstellar H2O emission lines are important probes of the physics and chemistry in the inner regions of circumstellar envelopes around asymptotic giant branch stars. Molecular oxygen, O2 has been expected historically to be an abundant component of the chemical species in molecular clouds and, as such, an important coolant of the dense interstellar medium. However, a number of attempts from both ground and from space have failed to detect O2 emission. The work described here uses heterodyne spectroscopy from space to search for molecular oxygen in the interstellar medium. The Odin satellite carries a 1.1 m sub-millimeter dish and a dedicated 119 GHz receiver for the ground state line of O2. Starting in 2002, the star forming molecular cloud core rho Oph A was observed with Odin for 34 days during several observing runs. We detect a spectral line at v(LSR) = 3.5 km/s with dv(FWHM) = 1.5 km/s, parameters which are also common to other species associated with rho Ohp A. This feature is identified as the O2 (N_J = 1_1 - 1_0) transition at 118 750.343 MHz. The abundance of molecular oxygen, relative to H2,, is 5E-8 averaged over the Odin beam. Context: Mass loss plays a dominant role in the evolution of low mass stars while they are on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). The gas and dust ejected during this phase are a major source in the mass budget of the interstellar medium. Recent studies have pointed towards the importance of variations in the mass-loss history of such objects. Aims: By modelling the full line profile of low excitation CO lines emitted in the circumstellar envelope, we can study the mass-loss history of AGB stars. Methods: We have developed a non-LTE radiative transfer code, which calculates the velocity structure and gas kinetic temperature of the envelope in a self-consistent way. The resulting structure of the envelope provides the input for the molecular line radiative calculations which are evaluated in the comoving frame. The code allows for the implementation of modulations in the mass-loss rate. This code has been benchmarked against other radiative transfer codes and is shown to perform well and efficiently. Results: We illustrate the effects of varying mass-loss rates in case of a superwind phase. The model is applied to the well-studied case of VY CMa. We show that both the observed integrated line strengths as the spectral structure present in the observed line profiles, unambiguously demonstrate that this source underwent a phase of high mass loss (~ 3.2E-4 Msun/yr) some 1000 yr ago. This phase took place for some 100 yr, and was preceded by a low mass-loss phase (~ 1E-6 Msun/yr) taking some 800 yr. The current mass-loss rate is estimated to be in the order of 8E-5 Msun/yr. Conclusions: In this paper, we demonstrate that both the relative strength of the CO rotational line profiles and the (non)-occurrence of spectral structure in the profile offer strong diagnostics to pinpoint the mass-loss history., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in "Astronomy & Astrophysics"

A search for the near-infrared water-ice absorption band was made in a number of very red OH/IR stars which are known to exhibit the 10um silicate absorption. As a by-product, accurate positions of these highly reddened objects are obtained. We derived a dust mass loss rate for each object by modelling the spectral energy distribution and the gas mass loss rate by solving the equation of motion for the dust drag wind. The derived mass loss rates show a strong correlation with the silicate optical depth as well as that of the water-ice. The stars have a high mass loss rate (> 1.0E-4 Msun/yr) with an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 110. In objects which show the 3.1um water-ice absorption, the near-IR slope is much steeper than those with no water-ice. Comparison between our calculated mass loss rates and those derived from OH and CO observations indicates that these stars have recently increased their mass loss rates., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures : accepted for publication in A&A

Far infrared fine structure line data from the ISO archive have been extracted for several hundred YSOs and their outflows, including molecular (CO) outflows, optical jets and Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. Given the importance of these lines to astrophysics, their excitation and transfer ought to be investigated in detail and, at this stage, the reliability of the diagnostic power of the fine structure transitions of O I and C II has been examined. Several issues, such as the extremely small intensity ratios of the oxygen 63 micron to 145 micron lines, are still awaiting an explanation. It is demonstrated that, in interstellar cloud conditions, the 145 micron line is prone to masing, but that this effect is likely an insufficient cause of the line ratio anomaly observed from cold dark clouds. Very optically thick emission could in principle also account for this, but would need similar, prohibitively high column densities and must therefore be abondoned as a viable explanation. One is left with [O I] 63 micron self absorption by cold and tenuous foreground gas, as has been advocated for distant luminous sources. Recent observations with the submillimeter observatory Odin support this scenario also in the case of nearby dark molecular clouds. On the basis of this large statistical material we are led to conclude that in star forming regions, the [O I] and [C II] lines generally have only limited diagnostic value., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures (in color), to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present Odin observations of the AGB star W Hya in the ground-state transition of ortho-H2O, 1(10)-1(01), at 557GHz. The line is clearly of circumstellar origin. Radiative transfer modelling of the water lines observed by Odin and ISO results in a mass-loss rate of (2.5 +/- 0.5)E-7 Msol/yr, and a circumstellar H2O abundance of (2.0 +/- 1.0)E-3. The inferred mass-loss rate is consistent with that obtained from modelling the circumstellar CO radio line emission, and also with that obtained from the dust emission modelling combined with a dynamical model for the outflow. The very high water abundance, higher than the cosmic oxygen abundance, can be explained by invoking an injection of excess water from evaporating icy bodies in the system. We present millimeter interferometry images of the CO J=1-0 line emission arising in the circumstellar envelope of HD 56126 (a.k.a. IRAS 07134+1005), which is one of the best studied 21-micron proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The CO emission extends from 1.2" to 7" in radius from the central star and appears consistent with a simple expanding envelope, as expected for a post-AGB star. We quantitatively model the molecular envelope using a radiative transfer code that we have modified for detached shells. Our best fit model reveals that two sequential winds created the circumstellar envelope of HD 56126: an AGB wind that lasted 6500 years with a mass-loss rate of 5.1x10^{-6} M_odot yr^{-1} and a more intense superwind that lasted 840 years with a mass-loss rate of 3x10^{-5} M_odot yr^{-1} and that ended the star's life on the AGB 1240 years ago. The total mass of this envelope is 0.059 M_odot which indicates a lower limit progenitor mass for the system of 0.66 M_odot, quite reasonable for this low-metallicity star which probably resides in the thick disk of the Galaxy. Comparison with images of the dust emission reveal a similar structure with the gas in the inner regions. Using 2-DUST, we model the dust emission of this source so that the model is consistent with the CO emission model and find an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 75., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in 10/2004 issue of ApJ

Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the inventory of solid state and molecular species in circumstellar ejecta. Here we analyse the infrared spectrum of the Asymptotic Giant Branch star W Hya, obtained by the Short and Long Wavelength Spectrometers on board of the Infrared Satellite Observatory. These spectra show evidence for the presence of amorphous silicates, aluminum oxide, and magnesium-iron oxide grains. We have modelled the spectral energy distribution using laboratory measured optical properties of these compounds and derive a total dust mass loss rate of 3E-10 Msol/yr. We find no satisfactory fit to the 13 micron dust emission feature and the identification of its carrier is still an open issue. We have also modelled the molecular absorption bands due to H2O, OH, CO, CO2, SiO, and SO2 and estimated the excitation temperatures for different bands which range from 300 to 3000K. It is clear that different molecules giving rise to these absorption bands originate from different gas layers. We present and analyse high resolution Fabry-Perot spectra of the three CO2 bands in the 15 micron region. In these data, the bands are resolved into individual Q-lines in emission, which allows the direct determination of the excitation temperature and column density of the emitting gas. This reveals the presence of a warm (about 450K) extended layer of CO2, somewhere between the photosphere and the dust formation zone. The gas in this layer is cooler than the 1000K CO2 gas responsible for the low-resolution absorption bands at 4.25 and 15 micron. The rotational and vibrational excitation temperatures derived from the individual Q-branch lines of CO2 are different (450K and 150K, respectively) so that the CO2 level population is not in LTE., Comment: To appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics A reference is added

We present submillimeter observations of rotational transitions of carbon monoxide from J = 2 -> 1 up to 7 -> 6 for a sample of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and red supergiants. It is the first time that the high transitions J = 6 -> 5 and 7 -> 6 are included in such a study. With line radiative transfer calculations, we aim to determine the mass-loss history of these stars by fitting the CO line intensities. We find that the observed line intensities of the high transitions, including the J = 4 -> 3 transition, are significantly lower than the predicted values. We conclude that the physical structure of the outflow of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars is more complex than previously thought. In order to understand the observed line intensities and profiles, a physical structure with a variable mass-loss rate and/or a gradient in stochastic gas velocity is required. A case study of the AGB star WX Psc is performed. We find that the CO line strengths may be explained by variations in mass-loss on time scales similar to those observed in the separated arc-like structures observed around post-AGB stars. In addition, a gradient in the stochastic velocity may play a role. Until this has been sorted out fully, any mass loss determinations based upon single CO lines will remain suspect., Comment: accepted for publication by A&A

We have observed the extreme OH/IR star, OH 26.5+0.6, in the infrared dust continuum and in the sub- millimeter rotational lines of CO. Mid-infrared images reveal the compact nature of the circumstellar shell (less than 0.5 sec). A deep 9.7 microns absorption feature and an absorption at 18 microns show that the dust mass-loss rate is very high. However, the low antenna temperatures of CO J = 1-0 and 2-1 lines suggest that the outer part of the circumstellar shell is much more tenuous. In order to resolve this discrepancy, we have observed the J = 3-2 and 4-3 CO rotational transitions. We have developed a model for the circumstellar shell for OH 26.5 + 0.6 which is consistent with the infrared and submillimeter observations. The dust and gas data are well fitted by a two-shell model, consisting of a dense shell surrounded by a more tenuous shell. The former we identify with the superwind (M = 5.5 x 10(exp -4) solar mass/ yr), and the latter we identify with mass loss on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) (M = 10(exp -6) solar mass/ yr). The transition between the two mass-loss phases is shown to be rather abrupt ((Delta)t less than 150 yr). Depending on the mass of the progenitor, this superwind phase may be the last thermal pulse (for M(sub *) less than 1.5 solar mass), or the first of a series of the superwind phases (for up to 8 solar mass), punctuated by a period of low mass-loss rates, before the star evolves off the AGB.

A significant fraction of a star's initial mass is lost while it is on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). Mass loss rates range from 10(exp -7) solar mass/yr for early AGB stars to a few 10(exp -4) solar mass/yr for stars at the tip of the AGB. Dust grains condense from the outflow as the gas expands and form a dust shell around the central star. A superwind (approximately 10(exp -4) to 10(exp -3) solar mass/yr) is thought to terminate the AGB phase. In the post-AGB phase, the star evolves to a higher effective temperature, the mass loss decreases (approximately 10(exp -8) solar mass/yr), but the wind velocity increases (approximately 1000 km/s). During this evolution, dust and gas are exposed to an increasingly harsher radiation field and when T(sub eff) reaches about 30,000 K, the nebula is ionized and becomes a planetary nebula (PN). Photons from the central star can create a photodissociation region (PDR) in the expanding superwind. Gas can be heated through the photoelectric effect working on small grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's). This gas can cool via the atomic fine structure lines of O I (63 microns and 145 microns) and C II (158 microns), as well as the rotational lines of CO. In the post-AGB phase, the fast wind from the central star will interact with the material ejected during the AGB phase. The shock caused by this interaction will dissociate and heat the gas. This warm gas will cool through atomic fine structure lines of O I and the rotational lines of (newly formed) CO.

We present KAO observations of the CO J=9-8 and 12-11 lines in the C-star IRC+10216; these are the highest rotational transitions so far observed in any AGB star. A model is developed for the CO emission by IRC+10216 in all the observed CO rotational transitions.

We have developed a radiative transfer model of the dust and gas envelopes around late-type stars. The gas kinetic temperature for each star is calculated by solving equations of motion and the energy balance simultaneously. The main processes include viscous heating and adiabatic and radiative cooling. Heating is dominated by viscosity as the grains stream outward through the gas, with some contribution in oxygen-rich stars by near-IR pumping of H2O followed by collisional de-excitation in the inner envelope. For O-rich stars, rotational H2O cooling is a dominant mechanism in the middle part of the envelope, with CO cooling being less significant. We have applied our model to three well-studied oxygen-rich red giant stars. The three stars cover a wide range of mass-loss rates, and hence they have different temperature structures. The derived temperature structures are used in calculating CO line profiles for these objects. Comparison of the dust and gas mass-loss rates suggests that mass-loss rates are not constant during the asymptotic giant branch phase. In particular, the results show that the low CO 1-0 antenna temperatures of OH/IR stars reflect an earlier phase of much lower mass-loss rate.

We present ground based observations of AGB stars for CO J=6-5; 4-3; 3-2; 2-1 and 1-0 lines. Radiative transfer modelling of these lines suggests that the stars do not lose mass continuously, but undergo discrete bursts of significant mass loss. Ratio of brightness of different fines show a wide range of behaviours in different stars, with higher transition lines probing deeper into the circumstellar envelope. We also obtained higher CO rotational transitions for post-AGB stars at J=22-21; 17-16 and 13-12. These lines can be used as probes for the warm medium at the inner part of the envelope. From these results, we can trace the history of mass loss in these stars.

We present ground-based spectra in the 10 and 20 micron atmospheric windows of the deeply embedded protostar GL 2136. These reveal narrow absorption features at 9.7 and 8.9 microns, which we ascribe to the CO-stretch and CH3 rock (respectively) of solid methanol in grain mantles. The peak position of the 9.7 micron band implies that methanol is an important ice mantle component. However, the CH3OH/H2O abundance ratio derived from the observed column densities is only 0.1. This discrepancy suggests that the solid methanol and water ice are located in independent grain components. These independent components may reflect chemical differentiation during grain mantle formation and/or partial outgassing close to the protostar.

Ground-based 7.4-24-micron spectra of two post-AGB objects, HD 161796 and HD 179821, are reported, and they are compared to those of other preplanetary nebulae. HD 161796 and HD 17982 show emission features at 10-12 microns and at 10 microns, and they exhibit a very rapid increase in flux between 13 and 15.5 microns. In view of the O-rich photosphere of HD 161796 and the presence of OH maser emission around all three objects, these features are ascribed to various oxides. The observed spectral features are quite different from the canonical silicate features observed in most O-rich giants. It is argued that HD 161796 and the bipolar nebulae Roberts 22 and NGC 6302 have all undergone the third dredge-up, with most of the dredged-up carbon having been converted to nitrogen by envelope-burning. It is concluded that carbon-rich grain material, produced during the interval between the end of the third dredge-up and the moment when envelope burning finally reduced the C/O ratio below unity again, could be responsible for the UIR bands now being excited in Roberts 22 and NGC 6302.

The IR emission of a sample of 24 OH/IR stars is modeled, and the properties of circumstellar dust and mass-loss rate of the central star are derived. It is shown that for some sources the observations of the far-IR emission is well fitted with a lambda exp -1 law, while some have a steeper index of 1.5. For a few sources, the presence of circumstellar ice grains is inferred from detailed studies of the observed 10-micron feature. Dust mass-loss rates are determined from detailed studies for all the stars in this sample. They range from 6.0 x 10 exp -10 solar mass/yr for an optically visible Mira to 2.2 x 10 exp -6 solar mass/yr for a heavily obscured OH/IR star. These dust mass-loss rates are compared to those calculated from IRAS photometry using 12-, 25-, and 60-micron fluxes. The dust mass-loss rates are also compared to gas mass-loss rates determined from OH and CO observations. For stars with tenuous shells, a dust-to-gas ratio of 0.001 is obtained.

The 10-micron spectrum of the K5V star SAO 179815 (= HD 98800) is presented, and conclusively demonstrates the presence of small silicate dust grains around this star. The 9.7-micron silicate dust feature is unusually broad and shallow in this system. This, together with the slow fall-off of flux at longer wavelengths, constrains the size and density distributions of dust grains in models of the disk. It is found that there must be a significant population of small grains, as well as a population of large grains in order to explain all the observed properties of the disk.
