Predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of a battery is critical to ensure the safe management of its manufacture and operation. In this study, a comprehensive investigation of the effect of data partitioning methods on RUL prediction was performed. To confirm the generality and transferability, the charge–discharge information of cathode materials with different chemical elements was adopted from previous research, including lithium iron phosphate, lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide, and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide cells. Among the partitioning procedures, the method of adding predicted data from the surrogate model to the training set exhibited the best accuracy, with an average mean absolute error (MAE) of 47 cycles. In contrast, the slide BOX method, which only used certain cycles before the test set as the training set, exhibited the worst MAE value of 60 cycles. In conclusion, the proposed data partitioning method could be implemented to predict the RUL of batteries to develop next-generation cathode materials with improved performance and stability, shorten the quality assessment time, and achieve stable predictive maintenance.

This study aimed to evaluate the oncological outcomes and surgical completeness of transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) compared with conventional transcervical thyroidectomy.We analyzed 489 patients with PTC who underwent thyroidectomy with or without central neck dissection (CND; 311 conventional thyroidectomy and 178 TORT) between January 2017 and December 2021. Patients with gross invasion of the surrounding structures, revision or completion thyroidectomy, and lateral neck dissection were excluded. Propensity score-matched analysis was performed using eight covariates, including age, sex, extent of thyroidectomy, tumor size, extrathyroidal extension (ETE), radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation, lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and CND.Before propensity score matching (PSM), age, male-to-female ratio, and body mass index were lower in the TORT group. The ratio of total thyroidectomy and CND, tumor size and bilaterality, LVI, and RAI ablation were higher in the conventional group. PSM generated two matched groups of 100 patients each. After PSM, significant differences between the two groups in the baseline analysis disappeared. In the matched samples, the recurrence rate (2% and 0% in the conventional and TORT groups, respectively) and recurrence-free survival curves did not differ between the two groups. The mean thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)-stimulated thyroglobulin level in the RAI group and TSH-suppressed thyroglobulin level in the non-RAI group were not different between the two groups.The 5-year oncologic outcomes and surgical completeness of TORT were comparable with those of conventional thyroidectomy in patients with small, localized, low-risk PTC when performed by experienced surgeons.

Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PMN-PZT) single crystals were doped with hardener Mn at variable concentrations to fabricate a high-output magneto-mechano-electric generator, which was then used to prepare a self-powered light dimming system with ambient light sensor.

Various methods based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been applied to enhance the photothermal effect. Among these methods, combining gold nanoparticles and stem cells has been suggested as a new technique for elevating the efficiency of photothermal therapy (PT) in terms of enhancing tumor targeting effect. However, to elicit the efficiency of PT using gold nanoparticles and stem cells, delivering large amounts of AuNPs into stem cells without loss should be considered.AuNPs, AuNPs-decorated silica nanoparticles, and silica-capped and AuNPs-decorated silica nanoparticles (SGSs) were synthesized and used to treat human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). After evaluating physical properties of each nanoparticle, the concentration of each nanoparticle was estimated based on its cytotoxicity to hMSCs. The amount of AuNPs loss from each nanoparticle by exogenous physical stress was evaluated after exposing particles to a gentle shaking. After these experiments, in vitro and in vivo photothermal effects were then evaluated.SGS showed no cytotoxicity when it was used to treat hMSCs at concentration up to 20 μg/mL. After intravenous injection to tumor-bearing mice, SGS-laden hMSCs group showed significantly higher heat generation than other groups following laser irradiation. Furthermore, in vivo photothermal effect in the hMSC-SGS group was significantly enhanced than those in other groups in terms of tumor volume decrement and histological outcome.Our results suggest that additional silica layer in SGSs could protect AuNPs from physical stress induced AuNPs loss. The strategy applied in SGS may offer a prospective method to improve PT.

Background Deep learning-based technologies are widely used in gastroenterology, especially for the lesion detections during endoscopic examination. However, there have been limited studies on the localization of wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). We propose an algorithm for classifying organs and predicting gastric and small bowel transit time during WCE examination.Methods We collected WCE data from 126 patients, using PillCam™ SB3 (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) at two university-affiliated hospitals. The dataset consisted of 2,395,932 images. We developed a deep learning model that accurately classified organs (i.e., stomach, small bowel, and colon) from 44 train and 10 validation cases. Then we applied calibration using a Gaussian filter to enhance the accuracy of detecting organ boundaries. Lastly, we estimated the transit time of the capsule in the gastric and small bowel regions using a combination of a convolutional neural network and a long short-term memory designed to be aware of the sequence information of continuous videos. We evaluated our model’s performance with WCE videos from 72 patients.Results Our model demonstrated an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of over 95% for classifying each organ (stomach, small intestine, and colon) and 97.1% of overall accuracy and F1-score. In the estimation of gastric and small bowel transit time, the mean time difference between the ground truth and model prediction was 4.3 ± 9.7 minutes and 24.7 ± 33.8 minutes, respectively. The model’s gastric transit time predictions were within 15 minutes for 95.8% of the test data set (69/72).Conclusions Our proposed algorithm shows promising results in classifying the organs and estimating the gastric transit time for WCE, which has significant clinical implications.

In the present study, Cu2O films were deposited on a glass substrate via RF (radio frequency) magnetron sputtering under substrate temperature conditions that ranged from room temperature (RT, 25 °C) to 400 °C. The structural, compositional, and optical properties of the Cu2O films were analyzed in relation to the experimental variables by applying various measurement methods. The substrate temperature was a crucial factor in shaping the structural, compositional, and optical properties of the Cu2O films that were synthesized via RF-magnetron sputtering. Our findings revealed that the Cu2O films exhibited a cubic structure, which was confirmed by XRD analysis. Specifically, the (111) and (200) planes showed different trends with respect to the substrate temperature. The intensity of the (111) peak increased at 250 °C, and above 300 °C, the preferred orientation of the (111) plane was maintained. The grain size, which was determined via FE-SEM, displayed a positive correlation with the substrate temperature. Additionally, XPS analysis revealed that the binding energy (BE) of the Cu2O film sputtered at 400 °C was similar to that which was previously reported. Notably, the as-grown Cu2O film demonstrated the highest transmittance (15.9%) in the visible region, which decreased with increasing substrate temperature. Furthermore, the energy band gap (Eg) of the Cu2O films remained constant (2.51 eV) at low substrate temperatures (25 °C to 200 °C) but exhibited a slight increase at higher temperatures, reaching 2.57 eV at 400 °C.

Teriparatide is an effective drug for the treatment of osteoporosis. This study examines the relationship between the drug delivery properties of the solid formulation with teriparatide and the pharmacokinetic properties of teriparatide in vivo.Teriparatide microneedles with different dissolution rates were prepared using sucrose and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). There were three aspects of this study: (1) The dissolution rate of teriparatide from both formulations (sucrose and CMC) was measured in vitro. (2) After administration into porcine skin ex vivo, the diffusion rate of FITC-dextran was observed using a confocal microscope. (3) Pharmacokinetic studies were performed in rats and pharmacokinetic data compared with the release rate and the diffusion pattern.In the in vitro dissolution experiment, 80% of teriparatide was released within 30 min from the CMC MNs, whereas 80% of teriparatide was released within 10 min from the sucrose MNs. After 30 min, the fluorescence intensity on the surface of the MNs was 40% of the initial intensity for sucrose MNs and 90% for CMC MNs. In the pharmacokinetic study, the CWhen teriparatide is delivered into the skin using microneedles, the release rate from the solid formulation determines the drug's pharmacokinetic properties. The diffusion pattern of fluorescence into the skin can be used to anticipate the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug.

Background/Aims Integrated relaxation pressure (IRP) is an important metric for functional evaluation of the lower esophageal sphincter. However, the effectiveness of IRP for evaluation of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) function has not yet been clarified. Methods High-resolution manometry (HRM) was performed in 180 patients with dysphagia. For comparison, 26 asymptomatic subjects were also recruited. IRP of the UES was defined as means of 0.2, 0.25, or 0.3 seconds (sIRPs) of maximal deglutitive relaxation in a 0.4-second window (a new equation for IRP calculation was developed using MATLAB). Also, the relaxation time interval of the UES, and mesopharyngeal and hypopharyngeal contractility (as a contractile integral) were evaluated using HRM. Results In normal subjects, mean values of 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3 sIRPs differed significantly from each other (P < 0.05). They were not associated with the relaxation time interval of the UES. In contrast, in patients with dysphagia, mean values of 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3 sIRPs were strongly related to relaxation time intervals of the UES (P < 0.05), and mean values of 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3 sIRPs in patients with aspiration were significantly higher than those of patients without aspiration (P < 0.01). However, in multivariate regression analyses, the main risk factor for aspiration was only a shorter relaxation time interval. Conclusions IRP values were significantly higher in patients with dysphagia and aspiration. However, its usefulness as a predictive factor for aspiration was less than the relaxation time interval of the UES.

We provide the material synthesis method, crystal structure information, and characterization of a novel mixed-valent metal oxide KIn0.33IIITe0.67VITe2IVO7, closely related to zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7), a radioactive waste immobilized material, having a 3D framework. The reported metal oxide containing an alkali-metal cation (K+), main-group cation (In3+), tellurate, and tellurite has been synthesized as both single crystals and a pure polycrystalline phase through a hydrothermal synthesis method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that KIn0.33Te2.67O7 crystallizing in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm (No. 63) reveals a 3D framework structure with a 1D channel consisting of Te/InO6 octahedra and TeO4 polyhedra. An interesting transition reaction from KIn0.33Te2.67O7 to KIn(TeO3)2 under hydrothermal conditions at 230 °C is discussed.

Microneedles (MNs), one of the transdermal drug delivery systems, have received extensive interest as an alternative to parenteral or parenteral administrations. For the successful drug delivery of coated MNs, the coated drug or chemical of MNs should be dissolved by skin's interstitial fluid and completely released from the MNs. Thus, the rapid disintegration of the drug from MNs plays a crucial role in ideal drug delivery of MNs. In this study, we developed the rapid disintegration coating formulation to reduce the application time of MN. The rapid disintegration MN was developed using polymers (PVA or HPMC), glycerol, croscarmellose sodium, tween 80, and Brij, as thickener, plasticizer, disintegrating agent, and surfactants, respectively. HPMC MN showed the burst release and rapid disintegration. Moreover, the drug from HPMC MN was successfully delivered into porcine skin within 1 min. In toxicological evaluation, the HPMC MN did not alter the liver and kidney function. Besides, HPMC MN did not induce the acute inflammation and change of skin structure after the application on rat skin. Thus, the coating formulation in this study could be one of the options for the development of safe and rapid disintegration MN.

The standard process for manufacturing microneedles containing API requires a way to process the API, including dissolving the API in a co-solvent and a drying process. In this study, the authors introduce a novel microneedle system that involves physically attaching API particles to the biocompatible adhesive surface of the microneedles. To manufacture particle-attached microneedles, an adhesive surface was prepared by coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed with an elastomer base and a curing agent at a ratio of 40:1 (PDMS40) onto polylactic acid microneedles (PLA), and then attaching ovalbumin (OVA) particles with a mean diameter of 10 μm to the PDMS adhesive layer. The OVA particles were delivered for 5 min into porcine skin with a delivery efficiency of 93% ex vivo and into mouse skin with a delivery efficiency of over 90% in vivo. Finally, mouse experiments with OVA particle-attached microneedles showed a value of OVA antibody titer similar to that produced by intramuscular administration. Particle-attached microneedles are a novel microneedle system with a dry coating process and rapid API delivery into the skin. Particle-attached microneedles can provide a wide range of applications for administering drugs and vaccines.

Due to the continuously mutating nature of the H3N2 virus, two aspects were considered when preparing the H3N2 microneedle vaccines: (1) rapid preparation and (2) cross-protection against multiple antigenic variants. Previous methods of measuring hemagglutinin (HA) content required the standard antibody, thus rapid preparation of H3N2 microneedle vaccines targeting the mutant H3N2 was delayed as a result of lacking a standard antibody. In this study, H3N2 microneedle vaccines were prepared by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) without the use of an antibody, and the cross-protection of the vaccines against several antigenic variants was observed. The HA content measured by HPLC was compared with that measured by ELISA to observe the accuracy of the HPLC analysis of HA content. The cross-protection afforded by the H3N2 microneedle vaccines was evaluated against several antigenic variants in mice. Microneedle vaccines for the 2019–20 seasonal H3N2 influenza virus (19–20 A/KS/17) were prepared using a dip-coating process. The cross-protection of 19–20 A/KS/17 H3N2 microneedle vaccines against the 2015–16 seasonal H3N2 influenza virus in mice was investigated by monitoring body weight changes and survival rate. The neutralizing antibody against several H3N2 antigenic variants was evaluated using the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). HA content in the solid microneedle vaccine formulation with trehalose post-exposure at 40℃ for 24 h was 48% and 43% from the initial HA content by HPLC and ELISA, respectively. The vaccine was administered to two groups of mice, one by microneedles and the other by intramuscular injection (IM). In vivo efficacies in the two groups were found to be similar, and cross-protection efficacy was also similar in both groups. HPLC exhibited good diagnostic performance with H3N2 microneedle vaccines and good agreement with ELISA. The H3N2 microneedle vaccines elicited a cross-protective immune response against the H3N2 antigenic variants. Here, we propose the use of HPLC for a more rapid approach in preparing H3N2 microneedle vaccines targeting H3N2 virus variants.
