Abstract

For the first time, spruce shoots (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) were fumigated in vivo with 13N-labelled NO2 with the aim of elucidating the mechanism of NO2− trapping in the apoplast of the substomatal cavity. Uptake by the needles could be monitored on-line, and a quantitative analysis of the activity records delivered a deposition velocity in agreement with the common dry deposition estimates and ruled out rapid export processes. A fast extraction procedure was applied which revealed that NO2 did not produce any detectable traces of nitrite. In needles in which the enzymes of nitrate reduction were not induced by prior fumigation with NO2, incorporation of NO2 was partially inhibited as compared to the fully induced shoots which took up and assimilated NO2 as expected from a constant influx. The only labelled inorganic species found in the extracts was nitrate (60%), whereas the rest of the label (40%) was assimilated organic nitrogen.A quantitative analysis of the data shows that the reaction of NO2 in the apoplast yields at least three times more nitrate than nitrite, so that the existing models about the apoplastic trapping reaction, disproportionation or antioxidant scavenging, which both postulate substantial production of nitrite, have to be reconsidered

Abstract

We study the interplay of fluctuations and superconductivity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (Ba-122) compounds with Ba and Fe substituted by K ($p$ doping) and Co ($n$ doping), respectively. To this end we measured electronic Raman spectra as a function of polarisation and temperature. We observe gap excitations and fluctuations for all doping levels studied. The response from fluctuations is much stronger for Co substitution and, according to the selection rules and the temperature dependence, originates from the exchange of two critical spin fluctuations with characteristic wave vectors $(\pm\pi, 0)$ and $(0,\pm\pi)$. At 22\% K doping ($p=0.22$), we find the same selection rules and spectral shape for the fluctuations but the intensity is smaller by a factor of 5. Since there exists no nematic region above the orthorhombic spin-density-wave (SDW) phase the identification of the fluctuations via the temperature dependence is not possible. The gap excitations in the superconducting state indicate strongly anisotropic near-nodal gaps for Co substitution which make the observation of collective modes difficult. The variation with doping of the spectral weights of the $A_{1g}$ and $B_{1g}$ gap features does not support the influence of fluctuations on Cooper pairing. Therefore, the observation of Bardasis-Schrieffer modes inside the nearly clean gaps on the K-doped side remains the only experimental evidence for the relevance of fluctuations for pairing., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Nematic fluctuations and order play a prominent role in material classes such as the cuprates, some ruthenates or the iron-based compounds and may be interrelated with superconductivity. In iron-based compounds signatures of nematicity have been observed in a variety of experiments. However, the fundamental question as to the relevance of the related spin, charge or orbital fluctuations remains open. Here, we use inelastic light (Raman) scattering and study Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2(0 ≤ x ≤ 0.085) for getting direct access to nematicity and the underlying critical fluctuations with finite characteristic wavelengths. We show that the response from fluctuations appears only in B 1g (x 2 - y 2) symmetry (1 Fe unit cell). The scattering amplitude increases towards the structural transition at T s but vanishes only below the magnetic ordering transition at T SDW < T s, suggesting a magnetic origin of the fluctuations. The theoretical analysis explains the selection rules and the temperature dependence of the fluctuation response. These results make magnetism the favourite candidate for driving the series of transitions.

Abstract

PURPOSE To examine patients with peripheral-arterial-occlusive-disease (PAOD) for systemic effects associated with atherosclerosis using a comprehensive state-of-the-art whole-body MR examination protocol. The protocol comprises the assessment of the complete arterial vasculature (except coronary arteries), the brain, and the heart. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multi-station whole-body 3D MR angiography was performed in sixty consecutive patients with clinical suspicion for PAOD at 1.5 T (Magnetom Avanto, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). Functional and delayed enhancement cardiac images were acquired, as well as FLAIR images of the brain and TOF angiography of intracranial vessels. MR and DSA images were assessed by independent observers for atherosclerotic manifestations and other pathology. Sensitivity and specificity for the detection of vascular pathology was calculated for MR data using conventional DSA of the symptomatic region as standard-of-reference. RESULTS Sensitivity and specificity for the detection of significant vascular stenosis (> 70 % luminal narrowing) was 94 % and 96 % (PPV 87 %, NPV 98 %). Significant microangiopathic tissue alterations (n = 7) and/or cerebral infarction (n = 18) were diagnosed in 23/60 patients. Thirty-eight of 60 patients presented with systolic left ventricular wall motion abnormalities. In 24 patients subendocardial or transmural delayed enhancement was detected in corresponding regions, indicating prior myocardial infarction. CONCLUSION For patients with PAOD and suspected systemic atherosclerotic disease a comprehensive diagnosis of accompanying cardiovascular pathology and therefore staging of systemic atherosclerotic disease is feasible within one MR examination.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Organ shortage limits the number of transplantations, and donor deterioration may precede and often prevent conventional organ preservation. This study evaluates in situ perfusion as a bedside method for cardiac allograft procurement in a large animal model. METHODS Thirty Landrace pigs (42 +/- 7 kg) were studied. The hearts in the conventional group underwent cardioplegic arrest with University of Wisconsin solution and sodium-hydrogen exchange inhibitor cariporide as an additive; they were explanted and stored on ice before transplantation. In the in situ group, one catheter was placed in the ascending aorta and another in the right atrium. After disconnection from the ventilator, hypoxia caused circulatory arrest. The aorta was endoclamped, and in situ perfusion of the aortic root was maintained with University of Wisconsin solution and cariporide. After explantation, hearts were stored on ice for 120 min. All hearts were implanted according to the Shumway technique. Ventricular pressure and cardiac output were monitored online, and troponin-I was measured intermittently. Two hours after weaning from extracorporal circulation, the animals were killed and histology was performed. RESULTS Catheters were placed through introducers within 5 min. Abstract

Reperfusion injury is a vital problem in non-heart-beating donor (NHBD) organs. The sodium-hydrogen inhibitor cariporide is thought to improve cellular integrity after ischemia and reperfusion. Recently, we demonstrated the possibility of preserving hearts with in situ perfusion after circulatory death. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cariporide improves in situ heart protection.We studied 20 pigs (18 +/- 2 kg). Hearts in the conventional group (CON, n = 6) underwent cardioplegic arrest with University of Wisconsin solution and then were explanted and stored for 150 minutes on ice. In the other groups, a catheter was placed in each ascending aorta and right atrium. After disconnecting the ventilator, hypoxia caused circulatory arrest within 7 +/- 2 minutes. The aorta was endoclamped, and continuous in situ perfusion of the aortic root was maintained for 60 minutes with University of Wisconsin solution (UW, n = 7) or with UW solution and cariporide (CAR, n = 7). After explantation, the hearts were stored on ice for 90 minutes. In all groups, hearts were reperfused with homologous, whole pig blood in an isolated working heart model for 45 minutes. We monitored stroke-work index on-line, intermittently measured troponin I and malondialdehyde, and compared light microscopic examinations among the groups.Stroke-work index was higher in the CAR group compared with the UW group during the last 20 minutes of reperfusion (10(3)dynes x cm x beats(-1)x gm(-1), 6.6 +/- 1.4 vs 4.5 +/- 2.0, p0.05), troponin I was lower in the CAR group compared with the UW group (161 +/- 32 ng/ml vs 277 +/- 35 ng/ml, p0.05). Results of malondialdehyde and light microscopic examinations were slightly better in the CAR group, without reaching statistical significance.Cariporide as an additive to UW solution improves functional recovery and decreases myocardial damage in hearts from NHBDs protected with an in situ perfusion technique.
