51. Calcium depletion toward moderately reddened stars

Abstract

Calcium depletions toward five moderately reddened (E/B - V/ greater than 0.35 and less than 0.45) stars and toward HD 147889, a heavily reddened (E/B - V/ = 1.08) member of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is reported. A developmental Multi-Anode Microchannel Array Detector was used to collect the data; its performance is characterized. Comparing the results for calcium from one line of sight to another and to those for other species, it is found that calcium exhibits a depletion pattern remarkably similar to that of silicon. The depletion of iron, on the other hand, has smaller variations and therefore does not correlate as well. Also, the depletion results for manganese and sulfur, both normally undepleted in diffuse clouds, have been included for comparison.

Abstract

Archival IUE data on the deeply embedded Rho Oph cloud star HD 147889 have been used to derive column densities for several species. The poor data quality and limited useful spectral coverage made unambiguous abundances very difficult to deduce, but firm limits could be set. Absolute depletions have been estimated, based on an assumed value of the total hydrogen column density, but they are uncertain due to uncertainty in N(H). The data appear to indicate that depletions are generally very large in this line of sight. There is also some indication that the relative depletions are enhanced in the densest portions of the cloud.

Abstract

Plans to combine the High Angular Resolution Imager/Spectrometer on the 4-meter Mayall telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the (256 x 1024)-pixel Multi-Anode Microchannel Array detector system to produce a unique instrument for speckle spectroscopy are described. The pulse-counting detector system will provide distortion-free imaging and will time tag each spatially-resolved photon event with an accuracy of 100 ns. The Imager/Spectrometer will provide a spatial resolution of 0.07 arcsec orthogonal to the plane of dispersion and 0.18 arcsec in the plane of dispersion.

Abstract

The results of a series of high-resolution spectroscopic observations undertaken with a linear (1 x 1024)-pixel visible-light Multi-Anode Microchannel Array (MAMA) detector on the Coudespectrograph of the 2.2-meter telescope at the Mauna Kea Observatory and on the vacuum spectrograph of the McMath Solar telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory are described. In addition, the two-dimensional MAMA detector systems with (16 x 1024)-pixel, (24 x 1024)-pixel, and (256 x 1024)-pixel formats which are now being readied for use in a series of ground-based, balloon, and sounding-rocket observing programs are briefly described.

Abstract

Surveys of abundances for species well suited to IUE's wavelength coverage and spectral resolution are undertaken to acquire interstellar line data for a large number of stars and column densities greater than those of previous instruments. A complex set of interactive computer programs has been developed for the efficient analysis of the IUE data, which is described along with results on Si II column densities toward two moderately reddened stars. Silicon depletions are inferred in the cases of the two stars, HD 42088 and HD 151804, and their H I column density determinations are used to estimate the total hydrogen column density.

56. Ultraviolet extinction curves derived from IUE data

Abstract

Data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) have been used to derive extinction curves for several stars chosen because of unusual diffuse band strength or location within dense clouds. Both the strength and position of the 2200 A extinction maximum were assessed, as well as the level of extinction in the far-ultraviolet. A variety of combinations of these features were found, ranging from near or complete absence of a 2200 A bump (HD 29647), to low far-ultraviolet extinction (Rho Oph), to unusually steep, far-ultraviolet extinction (HD 169454). Anomalous extinction apparently shows up frequently in stars associated with nebulosity or dense clouds. The apparent independence of 2200 A and far-ultraviolet extinction supports earlier suggestions that these two features are created by distinct populations of grains.

57. Interstellar abundance determination using IUE data

Abstract

Analysis of the silicon interstellar abundances was made for more heavily reddened lines of sight than were accessible to the Copernicus satellite. Silicon rarely had accurate column densities determined from Copernicus data because the available lines all lie on the flat portion of the curve of growth. With International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) it is possible to reach color excesses of E(B-V) approximately 0.5-0.7, and in addition obtain data on the weak SiII line at 1808 A, so that a wide range of oscillator strengths is available. The lower resolving power of the IUE causes difficulties in that several of the SiII lines are blended with strong lines of other species. Data on the lines of sight analyzed suggested that some of the absorption lines fall on the damped portion of the curve of growth, implying that silicon may not be as highly depleted as expected.

The Interactive Data Language (IDL) is used to analyze high resolution spectra from the IUE. Like other interactive languages, IDL is designed for use by the scientist rather than the professional programmer, allowing him to conceive of his data as simple entities and to operate on this data with minimal difficulty. A package of programs created to analyze interstellar absorption lines is presented as an example of the graphical power of IDL.

61. Study of an optical trigger to be used for beauty search in fixed target mode at the LHC

Abstract

We propose research and development of an "Optical trigger" to be used for B-meson selection in an LHC fixed target experiment. The optical trigger relies on Cherenkov light detection using a fast photodetector. The device is in principle sensitive to charged particles with large impact parameter, arising from secondary vertices belonging to the B-meson chain, but blind to minimum bias events originating in a small target. A rejection factor of 50 to 100 of the unwanted minimum bias events is expected, with a good detection efficiency for B-meson-originating decays. This should permit operation of LHC fixed target experiments at the forecast high rate.

Abstract

We propose an R&D program for the development of a Beauty trigger and innovative elements of the associated spectrometer. A series of short test runs is proposed at the SPS p-pbar Collider with the minimal spectrometer which will allow a credible B signal to be obtained in an invariant mass spectrum of reconstructed B mesons. The program builds on the success of the recent collider run of the P238 Collaboration, in which clean signals from beam-beam interactions were observed in a large silicon strip microvertex detector running 1.5 mm from the circulating beams. A continuing successful R&D program of the type proposed could ultimately lead to a collider experiment at the LHC to study CP Violation and rare B decays.

We propose to pursue the development of condensed photocathodes in gaseous parallel plate chambers with the following aims: - improvement of the photocathode formation technology on medium and large surfaces, with the requirement to resist in air for short term as is the case for CsI protected by exposure to TMAE; - study of gas mixtures transparent at VUV wavelenghts and allowing to obtain high gains in parallel plate chamber with condensed photocathode, in view of detection of photons for fast Cherenkov and RICH counters; - development of suitable electronics to exploit the intrinsic time resolution of the device, in the nanosecond region.

75. Black-Hole Results from STIS.

Abstract

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) has obtained high resolution (with $\Delta V \gtrsim 20$ km s-1 and $FWHM \sim 0.1-0.2$") spectra of the nuclei of about 15 nearby galaxies in a search for supermassive black holes. This talk concentrates on the data reduction process and the difficulties which have to be overcome to obtain reliable kinematic measurements from STIS observations. Our analysis is based on standard STIS-pipeline software (GSFC's IDL version of the CALSTIS package). We have added significant functionality to address the undersampling of the spatial part of the point-spread function and the presence of cosmic rays in the images. Typically $\sim 20$% of the total counts are cosmic-ray hits, in 5% of the pixels. We also present preliminary results of the nuclear kinematics for several galaxies for which Rutgers astronomers are lead investigators. In NGC 2841 we obtain a clear signature in the kinematics of a black hole with mass of several tens of million solar masses, the first black hole detection in this galaxy. In M 87 we measure the stellar velocity dispersion at a radius of 0.3", similar to ground-based data, but with far less contamination from adjacent parts of the image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Racial disparities in allergic disease outcomes have been reported with African Americans suffering disproportionately compared to White individuals. Objective To examine whether or not racial disparities are present as early as age 2 years in a racially diverse birth cohort in the Detroit metropolitan area. Methods All children who were participants in a birth cohort study in the Detroit metropolitan area were invited for a standardized physician exam with skin prick testing and parental interview at age 2 years. Physicians made inquiries regarding wheezing and allergy symptoms and inspected for and graded any atopic dermatitis (AD). Skin testing was performed for Alternaria, cat, cockroach, dog, Dermatophagoides farinae (Der F), Short Ragweed, Timothy grass, egg, milk and peanut. Specific IgE was measured for these same allergens and total IgE was determined. Results African American children (n = 466) were more likely than White children (n = 223) to have experienced any of the outcomes examined: at least 1 positive skin prick test from the panel of 10 allergens (21.7% vs. 11.0%, P = 0.001); at least one specific IgE ≥ 0.35 IU/mL (out of a panel of 10 allergens) (54.0% vs. 42.9%, P = 0.02); had AD (27.0% vs. 13.5%, Chi-square P < 0.001); and to ever have wheezed (44.9% vs. 36.0%, P = 0.03). African American children also tended to have higher total IgE (geometric means 23.4 IU/mL (95%CI 20.8, 27.6) vs. 16.7 IU/mL (95%CI 13.6, 20.6 IU/mL), Wilcoxon Rank Sum P = 0.004). With the exception of wheezing, the associations did not vary after adjusting for common social economic status variables (e.g. household income), environmental variables (endotoxin; dog, cat and cockroach allergen in house dust) or variables that differed between the racial groups (e.g. breastfeeding). After adjustment, the wheeze difference was ameliorated. Abstract

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope(HST) during the second servicing mission, in 1997 February. Four bands cover the wavelength range of 115-1000 nm, with spectral resolving powers between 26 and 200,000. Camera modes are used for target acquisition and deep imaging. Correction for HST's spherical aberration and astigmatism is included. The 115-170 nm range is covered by a CsI MAMA (Multianode Microchannel Array) detector and the 165-310 nm range by a Cs2Te MAMA, each with a format of 2048 × 2048 pixels, while the 305-555 and 550-1000 nm ranges are covered by a single CCD with a format of 1024 × 1024 pixels. The multiplexing advantage of using these two-dimensional detectors compared with the 1 × 512 pixel detectors of the first-generation spectrographs is 1 or 2 orders of magnitude, depending on the mode used. The relationship between the scientific goals and the instrument specifications and design is discussed.

81. Identification of factors associated with delayed antenatal care

Abstract

Research has shown that women who do not obtain adequate prenatal care significantly reduce their chances of a favorable pregnancy outcome. Because interventions aimed at circumventing unfavorable pregnancy outcomes, such as low birthweight, are most effective during prenatal care, the need to identify sociodemographic characteristics associated with a delay in the onset of such care is reinforced. In this study of 284 women seeking services at selected public clinics in Detroit, regression analysis was used to examine the simultaneous effects of change in income, insurance status, household members, age, and other variables on the prevalence of delayed prenatal care. Delayed care was found to be associated with a lack of insurance and an education of fewer than 12 years. Insurance status and household members (serving as an adjunct indicator of marital status) were found to be important predictors of late entry. Other variables such as age and race appeared to have no influence on the decision to delay care.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the polarization of $\alam$ hyperons produced in $\nu_\mu$ charged current interactions. The full data sample from the NOMAD experiment has been analyzed using the same $\vo$ identification procedure and analysis method reported in a previous paper~\cite{NOMAD-polar} for the case of $\lam$ hyperons. The $\alam$ polarization has been measured for the first time in a neutrino experiment. The polarization vector is found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract

Results from the $\nu_{\tau}$ appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic $\tau$ decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The ``blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90\% C.L. allowed region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane which includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\ \ 3.3\times10^{-4}$ at large $\Delta m^2$ and $\Delta m^2 0.7$ eV$^2$/$c^4$ at $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}=1$. The corresponding contour in the $\nuenutau$ oscillation hypothesis results in $\sin^22\theta_{e\tau}\ \ 1.5\times10^{-2}$ at large $\Delta m^2$ and $\Delta m^2 5.9$ eV$^2$/$c^4$ at $\sin^22\theta_{e \tau}=1$. 98. No supermassive black hole in M33?

Abstract

We observed the nucleus of M33, the third-brightest galaxy in the Local Group, with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at a resolution at least a factor of 10 higher than previously obtained. Rather than the steep rise expected within the radius of gravitational influence of a supermassive black hole, the random stellar velocities showed a decrease within a parsec of the center of the galaxy. The implied upper limit on the mass of the central black hole is only 3000 solar masses, about three orders of magnitude lower than the dynamically inferred mass of any other supermassive black hole. Detecting black holes of only a few thousand solar masses is observationally challenging, but it is critical to establish how supermassive black holes relate to their host galaxies, and which mechanisms influence the formation and evolution of both.

Abstract

Available data, although fragmentary, indicate that infections impose a large burden on long-term-care facilities (LTCFs) in the United States. Endemic infections occur with frequencies estimated to range between 1.64 and 3.83 million per year. These estimates rival or exceed the annual tally for nosocomial infections in acute-care settings. Infections associated with outbreaks caused by respiratory, gastrointestinal, and antimicrobial-resistant pathogens burden LTCFs even further. As judged by antimicrobial use, transfers to hospital, and mortality figures, infections in LTCFs are not trivial. Moreover, annual costs associated with these infections appear to exceed $1 billion. Recognition of the burden associated with infection in LTCFs helps to identify research priorities for this rapidly growing area of healthcare.

Abstract

Background: Asthma morbidity and mortality are higher in the United States for African-American (AA) children when compared to European-American (EA) children., Study Objectives: To explore racial differences in physiologic factors associated with pediatric asthma severity., Design: Cross-sectional., Methods: We analyzed data from two groups of children in suburban Detroit, one of which contains non-urban, middle-class AA children, a group not usually included in childhood asthma studies. All children were 6 to 8 years of age. Clinical evaluations included medical history, physical examination, skin testing, spirometry, and methacholine challenge., Results: The study population (n = 569) was 14% African American, 51% of the participants were male, and the mean age was 6.8 +/- 0.4 years. Socioeconomic status (parental education) was similar overall by race, although some strata-specific differences were observed. The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was 10% for both AA and EA groups. AA children were more reactive to methacholine than EA children (42% vs 22%, respectively; p = 0.001), and had significantly higher total IgE than EA children (geometric mean, 60. 6 vs 27.5 IU/mL; p = 0.001). Serum IgE was related to methacholine reactivity in EA children (p = 0.001), but not AA children (p = 0. 73). These differences remained after adjustment for gender, age, parental education, parental smoking, and maternal smoking during pregnancy., Conclusions: Our data support previous reports of racial differences in lung volume, airway responsiveness, and serum IgE concentrations. We found a racial difference in the relationship between total serum IgE and airway responsiveness that is unreported elsewhere. Overall, our results suggest that AA children may be predisposed to asthma.
